    One thing I liked about the scene is how Rocky never says that he "beat" Apollo, he just says time caught up with his friend. I think that's really gracious, but it also shows how much he loved and respected Apollo. And for the record, I always thought Apollo won their private fight, which sets up a much stronger reason why Apollo would jump at the chance to fight Drago in the fourth film.

    • @Enigma1788

      @JR_LeMar Рік тому +230

      Y'know, I never liked that Rocky revealed who won the fight, I always thought that should have been left to the fan's imaginations. I would have written this scene to be more ambiguous, have Rocky just answer with something like "Who do you think?" and have Adonis grin as Rocky walks away. And my headcanon always said Rocky *could have* been lying, saying Apollo won just to make his son happy. But your comment is the first one to make me rethink that. You're right, in hindsight this makes sense. Apollo was retired, but now he knew he could still beat Rocky, the champion. So that does explain his motivation to get back in the ring in Rocky IV, to prove to the world that he still had it..

    • @Brettwbeyer14
      @Brettwbeyer14 Рік тому +79

      @@JR_LeMar Well another thing is appollo always dominated their fights. Appollo won 13 rounds in their 2nd fight and was up by probably 15 or more points because of knocking down Rocky multiple times but was way too hung up on trying to knock Rocky out and completely wipe him out which was completely unecessary.

    • @ZakEmber
      @ZakEmber Рік тому +45

      @@JR_LeMar I think, (to be fair), it _was_ written ambiguously at the end of the third movie, but with the addition of the fourth film and since Stallone wrote both films, I got the impression in the fourth film that Apollo had won. All through Rocky two and three, Apollo had that unresolved point of pride about fighting Rocky, but at the start of the fourth film, he's totally at ease regarding his friend, and is instead lamenting his age. I feel like that sort of peace regarding Rocky came from a solid win. Rocky was likely fighting Apollo for fun, (not for all the reasons of the first two films), and he was fighting in Apollo's style, which Apollo was still the master of.
      I think that definitely would set up Apollo to feel like age is just a number, and leave that tiny itch of wanting to fight again, because he really was an amazing fighter! That's hard to let go!

    I'm sure others have mentioned it, but the line about Apollo winning the third fight is probably what set him on the road to his death. If indeed he did beat Rocky, even in a sparing match, it might have been the catalyst to thinking he's still got it, and maybe he's got one more fight in him. It could be what gave him the confidence to take on Drago, which of course, lead to him dying in the ring.

    • @giantrobby5050
      @giantrobby5050 Рік тому +6

      The third fight may have been a catalyst. Maybe. But I think Apollo was chasing the high of his prime days ever since he hung up the gloves professionally. While Rocky was having his second fight with Clubber Lang, Apollo was ringside simulating Rocky’s jabs like he was in the ring too.
      That’s why I personally think the third fight was irrelevant to his decision to fight Drago. He still had the passion to fight, he wasn’t under some impression that he could still be the Champ, he just missed boxing. And that’s what got him killed, the fact that he trusted Drago would just play along and fight at Apollo’s level rather than beat him to death to make a point.

      @@giantrobby5050 I never thought Drago killed him on purpose. An exhibition meant two different things to each of their cultures. For Apollo it was just a friendly, glorified sparring session. Why Rocky is the greatest character in cinema, is because there is no other character in all of cinema that we have seen his entire life. We have seen him lose in the ring, win in the ring, suffer personal loss (Mickey), lose it all, win it back, lose his wife to cancer, lose his son, lost his entire fortune, battle cancer himself, struggle with becoming the role model to help the next generation....we have watched Rocky truly mature with age.

    Love this movie and scene. My only issue is that it's not in Rocky's character to have not talked to Apollo's wife since the funeral. No way. You gotta' write the script based on the character's history and Rocky would've definitely have had some contact. Of course Rocky blames himself for Apollo's death, and would be ashamed to stay in touch consistently but since the funeral??? That's how many years??? And also, Adrian would've been sure to stay in touch some, too. Plus Rocky stayed close with Duke who had the deep ties to the Creed family. But that's just me, a huge Rocky/Creed fan complaining a bit.

I mean being Apollo's best friend and all. But again, makes for a better story and scene that Rocky didn't know anything. But I love this movie man and can't wait to see Creed 3.

    The interaction between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed's son is masterfully crafted to establish a profound sense of pathos and guilt on Rocky's side. The dialogue subtly delves into Rocky's emotional turmoil and lingering guilt over Apollo's death, as well as his conflicted feelings about returning to the world of boxing. When Apollo's son seeks Rocky's guidance, it evokes a deep sense of responsibility and obligation within Rocky, highlighting the weight of his past decisions and the legacy he carries.
    The line, "I was in the ring. I saw how it went down. That fight should have been stopped. I should have stopped it," encapsulates Rocky's internal struggle and the burden of guilt he carries for not preventing Apollo's tragic fate. This admission not only humanizes Rocky but also amplifies the emotional stakes of the scene, making his eventual agreement to train Apollo's son all the more poignant.
    Moreover, the scene's use of dialogue and subtext effectively conveys the complex dynamics between the characters, drawing viewers into the emotional core of the story. Rocky's reluctance to train Apollo's son initially reflects his desire to distance himself from his past, but ultimately, his sense of duty and connection to Apollo compel him to take on the role of mentor.

    I always suspected that Apollo won that 3rd fight behind closed doors...
    It makes perfect sense as Rocky could only ever go the distance when he had the proper motivation. When he has to fight for something that he deems greater than himself then he is basically impossible to defeat. Nobody has more heart than Rocky! But at that particular point in time he and Apollo were basically brothers and there's no incentive to push that far against family. Which absolutely ensures the victory for Apollo! Because when it comes down to it Apollo was always far more athletically gifted, skilled and technically sound...
    I'd bet that Round 1 was probably exciting and evenly matched. Round 2 was where Apollo began to land some big shots. Round 3 was where Rocky probably tried to push himself a little more out of respect for Apollo. But Round 4 is where he likely throws in the towel and with full humility acknowledges Apollo as the better fighter. Then they shake hands, hug, express thanks & praises, bust each others balls a bit more and call it a day.
