Dude you are so 100% right on how to draw a bow correctly. You do the best example of how to draw your bow the wrong way and the right way. You should show the guy from Bow Disciples. I keep telling him that he is sky drawing and pulling too much draw weight on his bow. He tells me that I have no clue what I'm talking about but look at it. Keep up the great vlogs!!!
lmao good luck. That James dude is a clown... I never seen someone with such bad form and punches the hell out of the trigger. And he really thinks he's good too. It's actually quite hilarious.
I tore my rotator cuff a few years ago because I was pulling my bow back incorrectly. I rehabbed my shoulder with the Archery Strong program and that is the only reason I can still shoot today. Good information in this video.
Man you mentioned every mistake that i made , i just bought my fist bow and I was so disappointed that I was going to return it. But with help like this I will try again and again, thank you. Muchas gracias por su ayuda.
Great point for all archers. I’m older now and wish that someone had told me this when I was younger. You can cause scarring in your shoulders and not know this until you tear something or later in life feel the effects of your injuries you have sustained in your youth. So take this in consideration when choosing a poundage that’s right for the individual. Start with an easily handled poundage and work your way up, but always use good form and hopefully you’ll have a long career shooting and hunting with your bow .😊
I generally think 7/10 people try and pull too much weight. The vast majority of Midwest whitetail hunters should be at 50-60 lbs in my view. Sure in the middle of summer with a T-shirt on shooting 3D 70 lbs is no problem. But when the moment of truth comes in mid-November with 4 layers of gear on, nerves, etc 60 is soooo much better.
Ya I never understood that people at the shop will say are you going to be able to pull that on a cold day ect lol if that's a thought in your mind either workout or drop your weight
Agree. I ran into a problem this past year pulling 60lbs.. got a little buck fever and had just a heck of a time pulling my bow back. Which led to bad form and not the greatest shot. We did end up finding it but it definitely made me rethink my drawing weight and form
I bought a new bow. Went 70# because that was what old one was. Since not practicing over winter I couldn’t get new bow back easily. Ended up dropping weight to 62 and am super happy with it. Plus body doesn’t hurt.
This is a very knowledgeable person. Spending the majority of the video on what NOT to do, is only helpful for some. It will also confuse beginners, showing many incorrect ways to do things, when they have a clean slate.
Definitely doing to sky draw. I hurt my rotator cuff outside of archery and and haven't been able to shoot for a few months. Now that hunting season is coming I am getting back to the range. Sometimes I draw back fine but other times my shoulder completely gives out. I'll have to go and see what the issue is in my draw.
Same here. Hurt my shoulder at work and I can’t draw my 70 pound bow. Gunna have to swallow the pride and lower it. Although what made me buy my current bow was the draw cycle and the bow wasn’t maxed out when I test shot it. At the time I test shot it I knew it was the smoothest cycle I’ve drawn. Either way, I’ll lower a bow poundage before going to a xbow
That’s great info. When I was working in a shop it was amazing how many folks wanted the higher draw weight. Especially young bucks…the macho thing! Additionally when hunting try to stay within your body frame when drawing. Keeping within your silhouette hides lots of movement. Keep up the good info.
Can you talk about the difference between sky drawing and how some people start with a high bow arm to keep the front shoulder from rolling forward and levering the bow downward as they draw directly to the face. I see lots of people saying this is sky drawing bit it is a technique taught by Some too end coaches. Think Chris Bee style of drawing. Good video 👍
Any suggestions for exercises that can build up my strength to get a good draw with more poundage? I'm tall and skinny, and I'm struggling to pull 55 lbs. smoothly. Should I just keep doing the most I can draw smoothly and ratchet it up over time?
I shoot a 70# longbow. Do you know if that means i can start with a 60# compound? I just bought my first compound. Your form looks perfect. Thanks for the awesome video.
Had a 7 by7 elk at 5 yds and couldn’t draw my bow had been sitting to long and pulling to much poundage. Went home sold that bow bought a 60 lb bow and shoot 54 pounds now. Hard lesson but a life changer. Leave your ego at home.
Way to look out for new and older archers alike. I have been telling people who will listen to draw consistently straight back with the right muscles 💪🏻. I have seen some athletic looking guys sky draw because no one showed them any different. Since I am not built like Thor 🔨 I have my bow set at 65 lbs with a 29.5 in draw with about a 470 grain arrow. I know that I can’t get 75-90 lb limbs back so I am happy where I’m at. Could I pull 70? Yes I am sure, but I don’t have to worry about backing it down for colder weather etc.,.
I am trying to get into archery this season. I bought a 2014 Carbon Knight with a 70lb draw. I've lowered it to 60lb and have been shooting it pretty accurately for about three weeks, but now my draw shoulder is hurting. I've not been able to find too much in the way of somewhere to post it for trade on a 60lb bow. Anywhere I can look? I don't have the option of buying another bow at the moment so it's find a trade or give up on this season.
We see the same things you went over at our range too And the sky jack is also NOT COOL We had a recurve guy sky jack and his arrow went well over 120 yds due to a slip off of his fingers you and Average Jack where one's I watched on rawing I draw 80+ lbs (short man sindrum) but I can with out alot of efort DUE TO the way you draw your bow I also use both arms (like you do with out knowing it) A small push from the front arm not quite 1/2 bent, and a pull with the rear arm elbow up high and both shoulder's stay up high as you drop into your archer point THAK YOU for doing this video I'm going to pass it along to other's who need help
Wished so many could see this video. Watch any 3-d video of a TAC event or just at the local club and I’m betting 9 of 10 draw improperly? I had to lower my poundage a lot several years ago and work my way up so as to learn this. If someone is using a hinge this is the easiest and best way for safety and to get all the muscles set up. And I also believe there’s too many that draw way too much for no reason. But that’s a choice thing.
Your right, I think modern bows draw cycle are to abrupt like a square, all effert to hard vally. Modern bows are geared for speed, not human machinical usage. I have gone back to my 2008 mathews switchback, not as much let off and dont care, but a much smother draw cycle!
Over the years at many local 3-d shoots I’ve talked people that are decent shots into shooting 15 yards sitting on a chair or whatever. After the shot I asked them to tell exactly what spot they were trying/ aiming to hit. Nearly everyone hit high. Sometimes it was only an inch+ and some were 3-4” high . Because of different posturing in your back is my thoughts. So if you’re target is 30+ yards are you going to hit high or high miss?
My shoulder is wrecked from work so I can't draw my bow with my elbow up I had to work with my son because he couldn't understand why he wasn't pulling a lot of poundage. I realized he was trying to copy the way I draw. He started pulling the correct way and now he can pull more poundage at 15 than most of my buddies.
You actually have to use your lats. To much strain on rhomboid and trapezius muscles can result in injury. Picture putting your scapula in your left back pocket if you are a RH shooter.
Lol, I see a ton of YT folks out there who sky draw like crazy, and the fun bit is they are inevitably the sort that try to tell everyone else that their way is the best/proper way, and inevitably mock others for shooting lower draw weights.
I’m pulling too much weight for my age, size and strength. So I will sky draw until I don’t hunt anymore I guess. It’s actually how I’ve avoided injury all this time - in my mind anyway. I don’t see all these anchor and form problems you’re talking about. I just settle in to my anchor and shoot.
Can you dry draw a bow I know you can’t release it without a arrow Bu I tried to draw without an arrow and the think that grabs the bow won’t hold the string ?
Thank you for this video! As a hopeful new archer waiting for my bow to come in, I'm trying to learn as much as i can to be ready. Also, I'm not gay, but if this guy asked nicely.....😂😂😂

The "flagship" or even decent mid-end bows come as 60-70#. It's very difficult to find a decent bow that comes in 40-50, or can be adjusted with a range of 40-70. It really be hugely helpful if manufacturers didn't play to the speed game, and opened up the flagship market to more people. l don't want to spend on a lesser bow, then have to sell it. I'd like to have one bow that can handle a wider range. Also, there are times when it's cold or I'm just tired and more adjustability would be welcomed.

IMO your draw shoulder looks wonky. You are kind of rotating it up and forward pre-draw, and pulling your shoulder back and down to draw. Any coach I have seen has you rotate your shoulder around your body. And coil/uncoil the torso simultaneously to help take some load off the shoulder. I'm guessing you are injury free because you are a healthy beast man. Not because you have proper drawing technique.
A wise man once told me. That if you can't draw your bow sitting in a chair with your feet lifted off the floor your draw weight is to high. Using proper form as you've described.
Its weird, when i draw i need to lean back my upper body otherwise i cant draw. So i can draw sitting no problem BUT if i can lean back while drawing, which ofcourse is not good for hunting situations

I’m glad that a lot of the UA-cam archers and good archers are finally addressing this. High poundage doesn’t matter it’s form and technique!
High poundage does matter. It lets you shoot heavier arrows and creates more energy. Making the animal expire quicker
Great point for all archers. I’m older now and wish that someone had told me this when I was younger. I’m drawing 68# no problem feels the same to me in all conditions
Great example on how to do it the RIGHT WAY!!!!
Keep up the great videos !!

Oof now seeing this I’m pretty sure I do one of these. I’m shooting in the morning. I’ll be on the lookout for it. Thanks for this.

That slight lean toward the bow makes it a lot more back and less arm 👍
Well done. Agree with David said below. Don't over bow, poundage, and good form scares less deer imho.
Thanks!!!
Thank you
Thank you for the tips. Definitely have some things to work on! Any recommendations for what to work out to help build strength for shooting
Good video, the number of sky draws and people that look like they are overbowed is insane...
Thank you! I just want to try an help archers with longevity and consistency! 👍🏼
Your draw still looks like an attenuated sky draw. I keep looking for videos with slow motion proper draw technique.
It’s all about not over weight your bow, just pull the correct weight
