    In 2006 when BMW dropped the N54 it was their first mass produced turbocharged engine. Previously BMW had produced a turbocharged engines in the past such as the M102 and M106, but those engines were limited production and never had successors. BMW had a long history of producing excellent naturally aspirated engines, so the N54 was a huge change for BMW.
    Not too long after the N54 was released in 2006, BMW began implementing the N55 in 2010 in the 5-Series Gran Turismo. Compared the N54, the N55 had a significant amount of changes that were desgined to make it more reliable, because the N54 did have a substantial amount of problems. While the N54 was BMW's first mass produced turbocharged engine, the N55 was their first engine to use a twin-scroll turbocharger.

    I'm not a big gearhead but I have this engine inside a BMW X1 2013 it's incredible, I love it more than enough power for me this thing can go 130 mph all day on a highway it's smooth clean not too loud, daily driver so good!!!! Thank you for sharing this video it's good info

    I’ve got an N55 M135i my first BMW coming from a VR6 Golf. It’s always crazy to me how this thing looks so understated but is a very quick car even in stock form.

      Don't make it better.
      I pull +600hp in my N54 and it's not loud at all. That's the best part of it all. I pull up to a 5.slow or a 392 with all there cutoff mufflers and I just walk them every time.
      Sleeper is the way 🤫

    Thank you very much super helpful information, I'm picking up an X1 with this engine and will leave it stock have no interest in tuning it I just want reliability out of it, I was worried about the timing chain issue i'v hear on the n-20s 2.0 engines but you mentioned none of that thank you again

    Got a lot of love for the N55. IMHO it's smoother and sounds better than the B58. Definitely is a lot more smooth and easier to drive on the limit paired with the zf8 compared to the S55 and DCT.

    Huh, didn’t mention anything about the M2’s N55 variant? That is a big bummer I got really excited for this video. Not only is it the most revised version of the N55, but they also insert many of the forged internals from the S55. Not to mention the lightened flywheel and extra oil circulation systems they added. It really is the last hurrah of the N55 and it sounds amazing to boot!

      +1, unlike n54, n55 is not one single engine, it’s a group of engines. While these are mostly identical, some variants can have different specs for internals and different power potential

    N55 in the M235i (N55B30O0) has a forged crank vs cast and the (N55B30T0) in the M2 has upgraded internals and a semi-closed deck design. There are people pushing 600+ WHP on stock bottom ends on these.

      Have a 2016 M235i with auto tranny that I bought new. Don't track it but do some street racing from time to time. Been sending the oil out to Blackstone Labs for analysis with every oil change. Last analysis (53,000 miles) showed a bump the iron content. Blackstone says it's still within limits, but I don't like it and obviously that has to be coming from internal parts. Average for iron in the oil should be 24 ppm (parts per million), lab reports 34ppm. Any reports of the N55B30 engine eating itself? All the other metals are at or below the universal average level.

      @@markburkey6371 The oil analysis with the next oil change -(10/7/21- 64,225 miles), iron was down to 27 ppm with the average for that engine reported by Blackstone to be 25 ppm. Blackstone's report stated "Your BMW is bringing home another stellar report. Aluminum and iron went down after a longer run, [aluminum went from 8 ppm to 6 ppm average is 9 ppm]and that's a very welcome result. Iron tends to fluctuate a bit between samples, but there are probably operational reasons for that. Your N55 still produces a lot less iron on a per-mile basis than most we test. The universal averages show this level of iron is normal for most other N55s after only ~5,800
      miles. Nice trends for a nice engine."
      I have had NO maintenance issues with any part of the car since its purchase. Total brake job at 49,999 miles-(pads, rotors, hardware, etc) under warranty. Cost to me was $0. I do the factory (NOT DEALER) recommended maintenance as per the manual, either myself or let BMW do it depending on the operation.

    I have an 2016 built N55 inside an X5 xDrive35i that's been tuned to the M Performance power kit. Apparently late production N55 share the rod bearings from the S55.

    There are at least three versions of the N55. The "base" which is used in most regular BMWs, the M135i/M235i which has forged internals except pistons, and the M2 spec N55 which is even stronger. Also, the early models until the middle of 2013 had the pneumatic wastegate and will have a lower tuning potential.

    Actually the late 2014 N55s came with forged crank and rods, just the fuel system in the N54 gives it that advantage of them

      @@a9653192 depends if your car has the N55B30 series engine, this version does not have all the forged bits of the N55B30O0 (M235/M135i engine code).

      @@a9653192 All N55s have forged rods. Higher performance variants have forged cranks. M2 variant has forged pistons, upgraded bearing shells, upgraded oil pump, lots of other minor modifications.

    Their weak spot is this valvetronic motor, which is made from plastic (Lol at BMW for this decision). The eccentric, intake and exhaust camshafts often have issues as well. This is weak engine. Had to open it and replace the valvetronic motor and the eccentric camshaft. Now I have to replace the intake camshaft as well - it's scored. This is weak for an engine for me especially that I still haven't replaced the brake pads (at 110k km's) but had to replace the valvetronic already...

      All n55's and n54's have forged rods and hypereutectic pistons. But only some of the n55's have forged cranks. The lesser cast crank hasn't been known to be a failure point anyways though.

      @@evanwalsh8808 Incorrect. The O0 variant has a forged crank and rods. The T0 in the M2 adds the pistons and oiling system from the S55 as well as cast iron sleeves for the bores.

    Not sure about n55 only making 500s dude just posted n55 f10 with 700. I got quoted 580 with stock turbo and stage 3 fuel pumps with my bolt ons from someone with same car and parts!!

    u told a lot of stuff here thats not true. First of all, stock turbo is capable of making 450hp with all bolt on stuff (cooler, piping, etc etc). Internals can handle 600hp in daily use. Ofcourse everything will break someday, but you got the point. Been there done that.

    Got 125i with N20 and looking at m135i upgrade with N55. Lot of upgrades (brakes, engine are the main ones) but the possibility of some of the issues scare me a bit tbh

    Who knows what exact transmission is in the 2016 F36 x drive (435xi) grand coupe ? Is it the first or second gen ZF 8 trans? Because I know instead on doing the LCi in 2016 they just went to the 440i in mid 2016 which was really stupid on their part, granted I just traded in my 2020 M5 comp for a brand new G82 M4 comp, I had the 07 e92 n54 with fbo and tune making great power but I use the 435 as my daily but I want a tasteful tune on this car I’m thinking JB4 I’ve already went with dinan and bootmod3 as we’ll as a jb4 G5 back in the day of my N54 ,and I cannot seem to find info on the GC I know it’s loaded 8 speed m sport package but not performance pack that’s the only option I left out . Literally costed me as much as a base M4, it’s like a mystery to everyone . Lol even wiki/forums/other F30+ guys dont seem to know. Thanks in advance !!!!

      All of the variants of zf8 speeds will be fine with tuned n55s I would recommend tuning the transmission of course

    spot on intelligence thank you for that ! with that said i have a 2011 335xi sedan stage 2 single twin scroll turbo upgrade , ghassan remanufactured n55 engine , stage 2 dme flash, all new valve cover , valvetronics motor , dme , delphie coils , plugs 1 step cooler, new oem bmw 6 injectors , and after about 1500 miles driven now, I'm noticing a ticking noise almost like a baseball card in a bicycles spokes upon acceleration when car is in gear driving only ! when in park or neutral and revving car , no noise ! only when in drive under medium or higher acceleration around 1500-3500 rpms then goes away in higher rpm,s ,doesn't happen at all under normal acceleration ? no one can figure out this issue ! please help !

      most likely wastegate rattle, pretty common on n55 and n54, could be a faulty turbo or just nothing to worry about depending on how bad it is

      Depends on whether its e series or f series. E series has n54 problems, f series n55 is pretty minimal on issues

    I got a 2011 E88 FBO was able to achieve a 475 torque but only 335 hp to the wheels. Stock turbo and stock high pressure fuel pump. With a costume tune by mhd and tuning dynamics and a xhp transmission flash on the DCT transmission. Those numbers where done with a 93 degree weather and 52% humidity. I forgot to mention that was done on pump 93 octane. Debating on upgrading the turbo because I want at lease 450 whp but idk how reliable that will be. I forgot to mention that I also got a remanufacture engine with forge crankshaft and kings bearings. Anyone here with a n55 with 450 or more whp? if yes what you got done to it?

    I have 2015 435i xDrive gc (n55) with 70k on it. Engine seized, battery died and starter went all at the same time about a week ago. Connecting rods and bearings are done. Car has MHD stage 2+ with FBO. Never abused the car, always drove it and treated it very well. Shit luck!

      Just got mine back from BMW. New engine from Germany, Dealership found metal in oil filter during trip for drivetrain malfunction. Thank goodness for engine and drive train warranty. 49K on the motor. Initial issue was a wiring harness. That replaced and issue resolved.

      Nah the engine seized up and you killed the battery and burned the starter from all the attempts trying to start it. 🤣

    My wife got a 2007 n52 and it not running to good. Been hearing alot of good things about n54 and n55 swap. Which is the better engine if it going to be for a toy. My daily is an f150 and my wife drives a Toyota Corolla. The BMW is strictly going to be for play and riding around town and showing off. It will be long term project.
    Open to all suggestions just give your reasoning for what you would choose.

      If you can find an M2 or M235i N55 - code is N55B30TO - that will be the one to have. Some internals from the S55, better oil circulation, and RK Tunes will get you to near on 700 wheel horsepower on stock block, while offering better reliability than the N54.

      Are you talking a specific n55. I only ask cause I plan on turning it bottom up and putting all forged internals. That said everywhere I'm looking for reliable transportation go n55 for street and strip go n54.
      I promise I'm not disputing what you say I'm just looking to get as much info as possible

    Not all N55 are created equal. For example, the M235 n55 is good for up to 700hp

      Yeah because it has some forged internals . The N55 is great regardless if your going to put that much power down build your engine anyways .

    These engines aren't even in the same ballpark as the 2JZ or RB26 and built a decade later.

      The engines were created in different time periods and conditions, so off comparison. Besides the b58 has proven itself more than capable and just as good as the 2JZ so there’s that.

    People crap on the N55 when it comes to the B58. B58 isn't better. N55 can produce the same big hp numbers reliably that the B58 can. People are always infatuated with the latest thing. Building my F30 335i for reliable high hp.

      @@sekouchill not that straight forward - there was a change from pwg to ewg, sometimes i see 315bhp quoted, sometimes 320bhp. and i think its the b30O engine after checking with ISTA.

    Am i the only one having problems with the oil pan leaking oil from the oil pan plug on the 2014 x5 n55 35i???😔 oil pan costs $1,000.00😩

      That's from somebody over torquing the drain bolt I have a couple e90s like that. All you need to do is read tap the hole re threaded. And oil pan does not cost $1,000 it's very cheap and easy to do just time-consuming dropping all the suspension connections. People say about cover gasket is $1,000 job too but I just took off my valve cover in an hour and a half time and putting one on in 30 minutes and I've never done it before just goes to show that if you mess with suspension and bolts then you can mess with some motor components do your own work. But as for your oil pan issue you can go to any shop and they will re drill and tap that for probably seventy-five bucks but then you want to make sure you get all the metal shavings out by changing the oil and flushing oil through to push out shavings good luck

      BMW 335I i bought the oil pan from bmw near me, and it did cost me Over $1000, i tried looking for cheaper one but had no luck, used cost $600 and brand new did come with a 2 year warranty, “2014 bmw x5 xdrive35i n55” and about the retapping for the plug, i am very Very concerned about the shaving of the reedrilling, last thing i dont want to do is buy a new engine that costs over $4grand and am not even done paying for the vehicle.😩😔but thanks, am reconsidering replacing it my self.🤷🏻‍♂️ its a $2400 charge just to get it replaced🙁

      @@fivestarhemi2877 you shouldn't have bought that obviously, for a rack. As for the shavings that's why there is many tools that you can use they're are drills with vacuums on them you use oil to push more drilling out of the whole many different ways to do it they even make a cool set that makes it impossible for shavings to get in there and many ways to do it I've done it many times

      @@fivestarhemi2877 LOL I have gotten my oil pan change before I even knew how to do it for 450 man they're fucking crazy and that wasn't from a dealership I went to the dealership and they quoted me 850 I never go to the dealership ever you do your own work so far I've changed oil pan & valve cover for under 650 myself
