I remember Jensen Ackles as Jason Teague but had no idea he'd auditioned for Clark Kent. It worked out for him getting the lead in Supernatural and he got to play a superhero after all in The Boys.
Also don't forget, Jensen also voiced Jason Todd/Red Hood in Batman: Under The Red Hood and later Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman: The Long Halloween Parts 1 and 2.

Michael Rosenbaum was by far the best Lex Luther ever. Best actor on the show by far, and the dynamic between Clark and Lex was amazing. I didn't want to see their friendship end, but we all knew it was inevitable. It made for a certain uneasiness. Smallville was amazing!

@@steverobertson1729 Gene Hackman is a legend, but his version of Lex we didn't get to see develop. So, it's hard to compare the two, but Michael's version we got to know better and he had so much more depth.
For sure. I remember being really sad when I heard he was leaving Smallville. For me, the first few seasons were amazing. Then I fell out of love with it as it continued.
@@steverobertson1729 Yeah, but it was a semi-comical version, with a diabolical, genocidal edge to it. The Smallville version was more post-Crisis scheming Lex. What I wanted was neither-- I prefer Lex the Evil Scientist -- basically Tony Stark as a sociopath.
Smallville was built different.
You can see even now 10 years after the show ended the cast still care about the show and have discussions about it 🔥

It's nice to see that Jensen Ackles and Zack Levi were able to make good career choices after their rejection from Smallville.
Jensen Ackles did play on Smallville, too, just not the lead role.
Jensen Ackles and Zack Levi don't look like Clark Kenk from the comics. Tom Welling looks much more like a Clark Ken than they do. So it was a wise choice by Smallville that they picked him as the lead.
I loved watching Smallville and Supernatural back to back when they first came out.
yea that was awesome having 2 hours of good shows back to back as a teen. always looked forward to that day of the week.
As much as I love Jensen, Tom was by far the right choice. And thank God Jensen didn't get the part, as if he did, we wouldn't have the Dean Winchester we all love. Jensen was perfect as Dean, just as Tom was perfect as Clark. It all worked out for the best.
Smallville really had very awesome guest stars.
Some people are just born to play a role, you just can’t picture anyone else playing it

I think both Clark and Lex were perfectly cast. I loved that show. You guys really got the characters.
Oh yea for sure. Especially when they both settled into the role. The acting from the first season from Tom doesn’t hold up lol.

Superman is a comic book character from the 30s that was an antidote to the rise of fascism and the victimisation of the jews, in particular. The character was written as the epitome of good. He also had to have what were core American values. In modern comic book writing, the character would be considered "one dimensional". It is challenging for the writers and actors who have to portray him. In fact modern iterations of the iconic character try to make him more flawed so that you can get a "better" script or movie. The core purpose of the character is that he is an alien who values humanity. This makes him naive. His powers make him invincible and yet the issue of corruption doesn't arise because his character is also perfect. This kind of pro war propaganda would never be written today.
Tom was able to add depth to Superman without breaking any of the constrictive parameters. This wasn't achieved in the movies made after Smallville in that the grittiness of the script removed the essence of what Superman was supposed to be in the interest of story depth. The series before Smallville (Lois and Clark) failed to add depth to the character and there was no jeopardy in the series.
Smallville is a story about superhumans in a teen world like Buffy the Vampire slayer and it holds up compared to that show. It is way better than Riverdale and Legacies which follow the same angsty base with the supernatural used as metaphors for real life issues. The first series holds up, when you look at it today, some of the villains lack depth but Tom plays his role to perfection. Its not his fault if you find the interaction between him and Lana irritating. I also think that Samuel L Jones III character Pete Ross was severely underwritten. Michael had an easier job with Lex but he made him relatable so he did progress that character too.

I am so glad they chose the right cast for Smallville. Tom and Michael is what made Smallville it wouldn’t of been the same with out these guys. I feel smallville would of flipped. It turned out to be the best timing for it to come out and the right people to make one of the best show of the Century. Michael you and Tom Rock!!!
That's wild thinking about Jensen basically playing young Superman, because nowadays I think he has been so great playing Red Hood and other anti-heroes and I think he would be awesome as Batman.

That and Jason Momoa was the second runner up to play Drax.

Our family watches Smallville. My husband and I watched it when we were first married, now we watch it with our 13 year old son. So fun

It is weird that they say that "things change" in regards to Justin dating Lana, because even at the time, it was weird. I always wondered how that plotline got okayed.
They did right casting Tom Welling he was perfect for the role and honestly I couldn't even see Jensen Ackles playing Clark Kent

@@erickwebster1973 For anything, really. Welling was quite wooden in Smallville, whereas Ackles brings a lot of character in everything he's in. I agree that I don't think Ackles works as Clark Kent, but I don't think Welling works either.

Ya there was an episode about it, with Lois creepy date saying "like..a teacher dating a student? It's not right!" And then Lois tells him, "They're both over 18." She was a senior in high school and he was college age with a job at the school for 🏈 coach. The only thing immoral about it was the student/teacher aspect of it...which is why when Lex found out about it he ratted him out to the school.
Then after that she got with Lex which was a greater age gap than she had with Jason .. so again age was not the issue & what was is the influence facility is supposed to have over impressionable students .. the power dynamic alone, though not much an assistant football coach could do for a cheerleader, any perks of that nature are immoral .. unless everyone can date a teacher for those same perks then no one can .. dating billionaires too except there are more teachers than billionaires so remember to share

@@popeye697 still wouldn't matter as there aren't any laws that restrict a student over the age of consent to date a billionaire of any age (also over the age of consent) & I'm pretty sure there are no teachers out there that are also billionaires so again certain that the issue was the occupation & not the age
@@WhoWeBe-ro Retired teacher here: teacher's can't date high school students even if they are at age of consent. Quick way to get fired, even with tenure. I've seen several teachers lose their jobs for having affairs with cheerleaders.
@@daveowens9849 you get that we are talking about a TV troupe specifically it's use on the television show Smallville .. also if you have seen several teachers lose their jobs from having dalliances with students then I guess you have seen that it can happen, it's just that it shouldn't happen, but on the third-hand perhaps there were more cases that you didn't know about & people whom might have gotten away with it, you just never were made aware & maybe they did get caught & it was kept silent .. you don't know what you don't know & can only speak from your own insights & mine are saying that you aren't completely aware of what this conversation is in reference to as well possibly being biased as a former teacher that all teacher/student affairs are discovered .. I mean who wants to think that was going on under their nose .. especially when they have had a full career in that field, but honestly how naive is it to assume that every single person whom violates one rule/law gets caught. As a former teacher I would expect better than an improper use of the word "can't".
Things turned out as they should have
I remember when starting on Smallville, I had no idea 20 years ago, series were set up in seasons. I later found out how to watch watch Smallville and stick till the end.
This make me wish even more that they would of done the crossover episode on Supernatural where the Winchester end up on the Smallville set with the actors filming an episode. I think it was Jason that talked about the idea they had for an episode.
Wouldn’t really have worked tho to confirm that there’s superhero’s in the supernatural universe. And Jensen Ackles plays two characters.
@@EverythingInTheFrame It would of acutally just be the Winchesters going to the Smallville tv set, because of there was something supernatural on the set that they had to hunt and protect the cast members. But I do agree with the issue with Dean looking identical to the guy who plays the coach on the show, but they could of just played into the joke.
@@augustusandrew8018 maybe if they had set it around when season 4 was being filmed and they agree to let him hunt down the supernatural entity as long as he plays this character.
They could also have gone to a house, present themselves as "agent Kent" and "agent Wayne" and the one in the house was Welling.
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padlecki( sp?) have a story of Tom sort of got on their show.
They were filming a scene where they drive up in Baby and on one take they'd realized that Tom Welling was standing at their start mark as 'Smallville' was also filming very close by. They said, "Get in!" Tom did and when ACTION! was called they pulled up and all 3 of them got out.
Someone on the crew pointed and said, "Hey....That's *Tom!*"
Just too bad it was just a rehearsal and they weren't actually filming.
Smallville ended too soon. I think they should have shown him as superman with the costume for a couple of seasons

too soon? dude the series got 10 seasons today shows are lucky if they even get close to that, but I will grant you they should have filmed season 11 or animated it instead of just using season 11 in a comic series.

The Producers actually wanted to put Batman and Wonder Woman in the show, but were specifically told that those were the only two characters they couldn't have for the Justice League, and in one episode they got a little bit close into having Wonder Woman but they had the finagle it a little bit with the singer Christina Milian I believe.
Smallville would be totally different with Jensen Ackles playing Clark. For starters it would have gone on for 15 seasons, then made a prequel about the origin story of the Johnathan and Martha Kent. But it definitely would have broken the "No Flights, No Tights" rule.
Nah, I love Jensen in Supernatural, but he wouldn't have made the greatest Clark Kent at that point in time. Today would be different. But back then Tom Welling was the better choice for the role.

even when I was watching that when it came out, that was already weird for me. but people in high school are usually played by people in their 20s
my 11 year old self didnot know this and didnot have the internet nor the reason to just google it i thought must be the food the ones that are not fat they look old
I thought it was common knowledge, like the old show Beverly Hills 90210 when you even had certain people in their 30s playing High School characters.
Everything needs to be put in context as laws were different for child actors back then, and how they've loosened up to where people of certain age can actually play their equivalent role.
@@rebel4life872 maybe but this was the first and only show i saw back in 2001 back then all i did was play ps1 maybe 2 not sure if i had one then and one day it crashed and i lost a lot of save data as i had not saved in a while so i decided to see what was on tv for the first time and it happened to be a few mins after the show started so Johnathan and Martha where driving back home when the rock shower started so i was very lucky to catch Smallville

@@OneGaurdian I'm not sure how much that really matters. I mean in terms of the ethics of it, sure it's less bad than if he started dating her after he became a coach, I'm just not sure the school board would see it that way.

Wasn't Jason...Jensen's character also supposed to be in college or about the college age? Let alone Lana met Jason in Paris while traveling in Europe alone. I mean, if the character is old enough to travel Europe alone then I think dating the assistant coach who was prob written to be only a few years older than Lana during her Senior Year of high school doesn't really matter.
Yeah the only illegal part of their relationship was that he was teaching in the high school that she attends, but age wise it was legal I think they were only like 4 years apart.

Except that it's still illegal in most jurisdictions. Not only was Lana still a minor, but she's a student and he's a teacher which automatically makes it an inappropriate relationship even IF they were close in age. In real life he'd have been fired immediately and it would be well within the rights of Lana's parents to press charges.
I hated this show because my dad never let me watch it. But now that I live alone I watched it I loathe my dad for never letting me watch it. I was born in 2000 and dad I swear. Good show fellas.

Jensen couldn't pull off shy, awkward and insecure anywhere near what Welling can. Plus, Welling looks much more like Christopher Reeve, including height.

Yes, it does happen. In high school, my gym teacher was 'secretly' dating a girl in grade 11. It wasn't much of a secret since the entire school knew about it

That's a very U.S. point of view .. the idea that because there are more strict rules against something that it's not happening or that there aren't current shows that still use that angle but emphasize more the secrecy involved, even overstating consequences just so the audience gets it & can judge for themselves if this relationship is worth the risk. Illegal things still happen & they still get overdramaticly portrayed for emphasis or for a disconnect or for whatever, but the bottom line will always be ratings so damn sure all people involved on screen will be attractive.
Naturally the drama is heightened if the teacher or administrative employee is married & there are a few close calls where the spouse almost figures something out .. or even better confronts the student giving the student a chance to age-shame the spouse whom may have only made one mistake in the relationship & that mistake was simply marrying a cheater .. not a lot of depth, but massive potential for drama

Wow either people are really all for that troupe of the teacher/student affair (which is how Riverdale started it's pilot episode - Archie with a considerably younger than the comics Miss Grundy really set the tone that it was not the comics) or they agree that just stating it doesn't happen or can't happen anymore simply because it created creepy feelings in you when you recently rewatched or rehashed that episode, but it creeped me out a little when it originally aired, but I didn't try to write any of that off as just a different place & time or that no one else could "get away with it". Regardless of whether these likes support that troupe or that the troupe hasn't gone anywhere or that it's a very U.S. point of view to just want to bury things as isolated incidents or stick them solely "in a different time". So clearly you weren't thinking about Riverdale as you may not watch teen dramas, but the comedy series Casual had a student spend the entire first season trying to sleep with her teacher only to catch her mom & her teacher .. sorry, Canadian show, but then things do happen in other Countries too .. some of it even makes history like DeGrassi .. did Drake's character ever have a dalliance with a faculty member?
I'll give you one - I am Canadian, even fairly close to Toronto, yet to my knowledge I have never heard a Drake song .. whoa-hoa-oa-a that must make me a hypocrite or something .. or nothing.

@@WhoWeBe-ro actually I was never into the Archie Comics but I do like the Riverdale show, I hear it's really Loosely based on the comics which honestly appeals to me even more knowing the fact that they actually upgraded it a bit to fit as you would call it a US trope show.
Not only have I been to Canada before but you made me remember funny enough I was actually involved romantically with a married woman who was barely separated, so there's something about it maybe Canadians need a little bit of spice in their life and that Trope just so happens to fit everything that involves temptation.
By the way I don't find you weird just for not listening to Drake because you're Canadian, people who haven't been there before or aren't really into Canadian culture wouldn't really realize just how big it is, so you could live on the outskirts by the natives, or quite simply just don't like rap.
@@rebel4life872 I agree that it is refreshing that they brought it to current times & for more mature audiences. I didn't refer to the student/teacher trope as a U.S. trope, but rather Rosenbaum's easy dismissal that it couldn't happen today as clearly the trope never went anywhere.
For your tryst with a separated Canadian women & the assumption that maybe Canadians need more spice .. I don't know anything about either of you nor anything you discussed, but that was one Canadian & one divorce that you are basing a broad generalization on .. I'm sure Canadian divorce rates aren't too different than U.S. divorce rates just as much as I am positive that there are more reasons than spice or even fidelity that could lead to divorce .. abuse, irreconcilable differences, prison, fraud, going to prison because of fraud .. I'm not limiting it to that, but the listing part is over.
I was using the Drake argument as absurdity, but also to emphasize that though I don't listen to Drake, I am aware that he still exists as much as I am aware that even if teacher/student relationships stopped completely in real life, the trope would live on in reel life because as you mentioned perfect grounds for massive underscores of temptation.

An angry old guy in many senses as a Native friend of mine was banned from Facebook for two days for commenting that a meme of the pope with a Native headdressing instead of his normal excessive hats made him angry. Well I commented before about not appreciating your remark about how maybe I haven't knowingly heard Drake because I live in the outskirts close to the Natives. There are a few Reservations closer to Toronto than I am & Natives are huge in the Canadian hip-hop scene so I'm pretty sure some Natives have heard of Drake. Basically you have reduced all Natives to living on Reservations & having no knowledge of anything outside of their Reservations & reduced all divorce in Canada to a lack of spice & reduced all viewership in Canada to just watching the same thing. I enjoy a good storytelling device & that trope does that especially if the spouse confronts the student whom instantly age shames the spouse even though the teacher is closer in age to the spouse than the student & you get to laugh at the dumb kid and/or the bad writing, but in all sincerity I don't prefer that nor do I support how some shows get cancelled for oversexualizing teens & others get praised for it & very often the actors are over 20 which isn't something I'm against, just that I don't understand how this show with 20's-something cast pretending to be zitless teens all banging away is given multiple seasons & that show was harassed until it was cancelled before the first season finale even airs .. what is even the point of watching the finale at that point.
I hope this can all be seen as civil criticism & that no one need take offense to my standing up for all people whom are aware that there are other people out there & that any of them from absolutely anywhere could have just as much depth as you .. or maybe even more.

I didn't realize Jensen Ackles was up for that role. I have a really hard time seeing that because this was a show about a young and less confident Clark, and Ackles just...OOOZES self confidence in every role I've ever seen him in. I thick ACkles has more charisma and acting chops than Tom (sorry, Tom...though he's been honest that he didn't know what he was doing at the time)...but I just don't think he fit the part.
Yep, Jensen doesn’t fit the quiet nerd roll at all, too much Charisma, that’s why he stole Supernatural from Jared, Sam was supposed to be the central character and the main focus of the first three seasons.
As much as I like Ben Affleck does Batman I cannot deny the fact that Jensen would make a great Batman!
I have no idea why people say that he doesn't fit Batman at all, he's more so the Captain America type trope actor, in my opinion.

@@Solo-Skywalker I know he has voiced Red Hood before, I didn't know about Batman. You are really underestimating Robin Patterson's acting skills, the dude has chops besides being Edward from Twilight, I would even say a much better performer than Jensen.

@@Solo-Skywalker go look at the plethora of films Patterson is in versus Jensen, it's as clear as night and day who's the better actor, I mean "come on", I like Jensen and all but he pretty much plays the same character from Supernatural a very one note actor whereas Robert he can truly lose himself in a role equivalent to a Christian Bale, Johnny Depp level caliber actor.

Can I just say something? I’m completely puzzled by the “but she was a senior/18” comments I see on this thread. It is completely unethical for a teacher, coach, staff member of a school to date one of the students which is why people get fired for doing so. There has to be clear boundaries set to safeguard against manipulation, Coercion, undue influence, power imbalance, shall I go on? As a matter of fact plenty of careers have rules against romantic relationships among authority figures and subordinates and everyone is an adult, so I’m not sure why some of y’all would excuse it, fictional TV show or not. 🤔

It definitely was weird with Lana and Jason but they were both over 18 and Jason was at most around Lex’s age. It was just bad because Jason was employed by the school which Lana attended but it wasn’t really an issue since he was just an assistant football coach so he had no power over Lana as a student.

It's odd when the cast doesn't know the show. Lana and Jason met and began dating before he became affiliated with her school. It was the summer between her junior year and senior year. They were both over 18. Things don't change, women are hypergamous.
