Same for many people. For those of us who grew up in the 70s-80s, Reeve didn't "play" Superman, he WAS Superman.

The funny thing is that Christopher Reeves' father was a Princeton professor who thought that Christopher was doing Man and Superman, a George Bernard Shaw play written in 1905, when Christopher told him that he was going to do a Superman movie!

Tom should have listened to him. It's a shame we've never got to see Tom as Superman in the movies 'cause he was perfect. Smallville was the first shared universe and it could have continued in cinemas.

Even in his conversations with the Christopher Reeve, Tom just embodies Superman so well, man. I don’t know if there’s a more Superman-like response to hearing somebody like Christopher Reeve tell you “I’m glad you’re the next Superman” and you respond with “I’m just Clark Kent”
That had to be the coolest thing ever to work with Christopher.
This is the best episode of smallville to have the OG superman and clark meet. The fact that this episode is the turning point for this show as to have clark understand his heritage

It was incredible my kids were too young to know who he was so we had to watch the movies with them.
Even the music ( Mark Snow) was so special in "Rosetta". Especially in the beginning of episode when Clark is flying in his dream to the Kawatche caves. So beautiful.
That is why the show sounded like x files. It was somewhat similiar. A mistery, a freak of the weak and a secret.
that scene was absolutely amazing. I remember watching it when it first aired and I went through a range of emotions.
Chris knew that Smallville was special. I really enjoyed the after episode announcement. I eventually bought 14 of the "Go Forward" Superman necklace+keychain tag sets. I wish I had bought 100. I have given away 11 of them, but if I had more I would have given away more. Evetime I give one away I tell the story of how Superman came to Smallville.
I knew he will be in Smallville, I knew what episode. His young picture was shown already in the scene before he came out. But man when you see him onscreen..oh wowwww....there were no words. I was just in awe of his presence. Im soo happy for Smallville that he became part of it

I have a real lingering sadness that other Superman actors didn’t get to meet Chris and talk with him. I think Tyler on the CW and Cavill would have both received huge endorsements of love and support from Chris.
And I can totally imagine Cavill being a big fan, since he has a big nerdy side, liking games and all that, he probably likes comics and stuff, so it wouldn't surprise me if he saw the superman films where Chris was Superman and thought about it while performing himself.

I was 4 when I saw Superman. Christopher Reeves was injured about 2 years before I spent years in the hospital from an injury. My family read me his book Still Me while I was incapacitated. He was a great actor but more importantly an inspirational human being.

I still remember as a kid watching the episode when Cristopher Reeve enters the show and immediately got so excited, I had watched and rewatched all the Superman films back then and hearing his voice was a massive WTF moment. It really did feel like it was a passing of the torch, I know Tom has never had much interest in actually being Superman, but being Clark Kent, telling the story, was still being Superman, that's the whole point of the show, being Clark Kent and Superman were both the same thing. It would be nice to see him in the suit but I doubt we will ever truly get that.

I started to rewatch smallville and I watched this episode today. Had goosebumps so bad, especially with the John Williams score!
Chris = Superman in every conceivable way. Great that he saw that Tom had that same spark. Too bad Hollywood never did.

Such an awesome episode. On this third planet from the Star Sol you be God among men……that line really got me. I understood the power of who Clark Kent really is. I love the entire series, well acted and so well written.
I see 13 dislikes for this clip. I cannot image how anyone that watched this, anyone who liked Chris Reeve's Superman, or anyone who likes Smallville would not find this completely touching and special. Some folks have no soul. Tom Welling, Christopher Reeve's endorsement was solid, and so deserved. Michael, Tom and Ryan, please keep up the great work on this amazing podcast. I know this clip came out 10 months ago (as of this comment), but it meant a lot to me, as did the full episode (podcast and Smallville episode).
That episode is still amazing that he was in it.
The reason that I am able to write and believe in bigger and better worlds today will always be owed to Christopher Reeve, who made me believe that a man could fly.

Christopher Reeve is what you get when Kal - El walks right off the page of the comic book. He is the one true Superman.
I love Christopher Reeve. He was absolutely fantastic as superman and such a humble down to earth guy. To me he is the best superman with Henry Cavill being a very close second. I do believe that if Tom would've had the opportunity to portray Superman he would've done a great job. P.S: Michael absolutely nailed the role of Lex Luthor and I would love to see him as Lex in a superman film.

You should have been! To be able see a young kal become Clark Kent before he becomes Superman is everything and that’s probably what Reeves saw because with all due respect to Henry Cavil and other Supermen in the past but Reeves was the best because of his distinction and differences between Clark Kent and Superman! Wish we got to see Tom like that on the big screen. What a shame!

I think tom was afraid of being superman because of the impact who Chris was.... Chris something in him, something special
Smallville was great and it should have honestly gone on and eventually become "Metropolis" where Tom would have finally become Superman, and then they could have also made side series' like "Central City", "Star City", "Gotham", "Atlantis" and "Themyscira" and it could have all culminated with JLA crossovers in a way that the Arroverse did, but less gritty and more campy like Smallville was.
I'd like to think there's an alternate universe out there that got all that, and perhaps my getting that idea is just my minds eye subconsciously peering into that universe.

Christopher reeves and young Tom welling look so similar not like anything too crazy but I can definitely see why they picked Clark he portrayed the hero very well as Christopher reeves did with the innocence and charm but always wanting to help everyone very well done smallville 🥰

Even though he never really wore the suit, Tom Welling was playing Superman as much as anyone ever has maybe more so than most as he is playing the character before he created the equally false personas of Superman with the Cape and Clark with the Glasses.

Ifffff only you were interested in working out like Henry Cavill. I wanted YOUUUUUU TO BE IN SUPERMAN RETURNS!!!! I thought for sure it was gonna be you. When they first showed Brandon's face in space as he slowly opened his eyes I screamed no WAYYYYYYYY!!!! I can remember being so upset. I just didn't understand it at the time that your schedule simply wouldn't allow it. And other factors I'm sure. And James Gunn has gone rogue. The entire universe is DISCUSTED with him for ditching Henry after he proved to be worthy of the cape. So many ups and downs in Hollywood lately it's exhausting.
Its still such a Shame that Tom Welling never gave us a full action scene of him in the suit. Even if it was just for the finale and they didn't do a full movie.
Such a missed opportunity
They should make a Clark-Kent film where he never dared to show himself to the world and never got a chance to find out who his real parents are. Then a Superman appears from another dimension and wants to conquer the planet. Clark must now fight against a version of himself who is many times stronger, more experienced and smarter. Tom Welling would be perfect for this role as he portrays Clark Kent like no other.

This is the problem that Dean Cain, Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill faced. They were not Superman. The could never be Superman. Tom at least got lucky in that he was palying Clark and not Superman.
