Enjoy Boyd's stories about being hired by Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne; Devaney telling him "if anyone gets slower, you're fired;" Osborne's pursuit of every possible advantage for his team; and Devaney later calling him the best hire he ever made.

Amazing story, and really didn’t realize Boyd’s total impact on strength training. I started school at NU in 1978, and he was definitely the MAN on campus.👍💪🤩
Thank you Tim! I learned a lot too, he is really a pioneer in the whole field. Hope you'll check out some other Common Fan episodes as well!
Really enjoyed this. My senior year I was on the powerlifting team...it was a club sport I believe. Mike Arthur was a student-coach (he was a junior). What a lot of people don't know is that in 1977, in Des Moines, Mike broke the world deadlift record for the 132lb class. I was also in that meet, so I got to see him do it. 3 of us drove up to Des Moines together to do the meet there. If my memory is correct, Mike went to work for Boyd full-time upon graduation. I didn't even know what powerlifting was before I got to UNL, but it turned into a lifelong hobby. I still compete to this day and actually squat and deadlift more now as an old guy than I did then. Boyd kept his finger in powerlifting so say hello to him for me.
Thanks Mark! That is a really cool story, thanks for sharing. Hope you'll check out some of our other episodes as well.
