  • The Common Fans launch The Reckoning - a series of episodes focused on the post-Tom Osborne era of Nebraska football. This episode, featuring long time Nebraska reporters Mike Babcock and Brandon Vogel, focuses on the question: What if Nebraska had never fired Frank Solich?
    The crew looks at:
    -Osborne's promise to retire after the 1996 season.
    -Was the hiring of Solich always a sure thing?
    -Solich's support (or lack thereof) among the other assistants.
    -The high points: 2001 win over Oklahoma, 1999 Big 12 championship, and more.
    2002 - first season without 9 wins since 1968, and first time without a winning record since 1961.
    Did the majority of Husker fans side with Pederson after the firing of Solich?
    The next-to-impossible task of following not one, but two hall of fame coaches.
    What would have been good enough for Nebraska fans? Were the Huskers always bound to fire a 9-win coach?
    Could Frank Solich have gotten Nebraska back to winning conference championships and competing for national championships?
    Special guest Brandon Vogel joins the Common Fans for all of The Reckoning episodes, and the featured guest for this episode is Mike Babcock. As a football coach, I enjoy the X’s and O’s side of football but this has completely blown me away by how much I enjoyed it

    Everyone glosses over Franks HORRIFIC 7-7 season, the year before his firing. His problems were many. First off, his recruiting was a drastic departure from Osborne. Secondly, he simply didn’t understand the offense very well. He knew running backs for sure, but it’s different coaching a position group vs coaching an entire side of the ball.
    Frank went 7-7, and then finally made staff changes and went 9-3, but the three losses were not even close. Plus, his last team in 2003, was basically the national leader in turnover margin because the defense took the ball away like crazy. They won because of Pelini. Franks offense did just enough to win 9 games, & he was 6 years in as a HC. If you are an HC & OC, you can’t fire your DC because supposedly he was holding you back, then hire a guy with no DC experience & lean on him all season to win some games. Frank deserved to be fired as HC, and he 100% deserves to be in the Nebraska hall of fame as a position coach.

      Disagree because the defense was bad under Bohl, it was average at best, under Pelini it got a lot better. The offense was gon a change but was gonna take time under Cotton as caller. The fans got greedy and it cost Nebraska 4 years of hell with Callahan. That offense was just as bad

    One of the things that struck me through the post Solich era, and when Bob Stoops was hired at Oklahoma, that every post game interview, Stoops thanked his A.D. and university president. Nebraska lacked alignment at the executive level.

  • @stevennichols6915
    @stevennichols6915 2 дні тому

    One of the problems firing Solich when they did, was the fact that he made changes and brought in new dynamic coaches, and they were never given a real chance. And Coach Osborne was very upset over how the whole thing was done.

  • @CliffVogler-tb9rb

    Problem was Frank didn’t recruit well. He had the program but didn’t recruit any good classes as a whole. He found a few but no depth at all. Callahan had to dump half the roster that were NAIA level guys. Frank’s last season was against the worst schedule in decades, mostly. V

      I wonder how much of that recruiting dropoff was due to the disallowance of partial and non qualifiers. One of the votes that Babcock was talking about.@commonfanGBR

    Then Nebraska would of given up the big 12 N to KSU and Mizzou. They would of been a 7 or 8 win program most years.

    16-12 in his last 28 games of his tenure. With 9 of those being double digit losses. The program was on a downtrend, his recruiting was lackluster and his offense was not very good. He just didn't adjust well to the new era of football.

    • @johnhamilton7797
      @johnhamilton7797 7 днів тому +1

      Frank was ultimately the victim of the Peter Principle. Retrospectively speaking, Solich should have been more aggressive with moving up the coaching ladder. He needed to cut his teeth at other programs.
      Tom Osborne did Solich zero favors.

    i'm not sure if they should or shouldn't have. One thing is sure. Make sure to fire the coach after they have a bad year not 8-9 wins. Either we should have fired Frank after 2002 or after 2004 (if he had another bad year) Same thing with Bo Pelini. What was the narrative? (Nebraska fans are crazy). It's why you fire Mike Riley after 2017 and not 2016.

    Those saying Solich deserved to be fired, I'm gonna tell ya look what it did to the program later on. I get the 7-7 season, it was bad but to make staff changes to go 9-3 not bad compared to most teams I'd take right now. Greed cost the football program, and it showed. Callahan coukd recruit but offense was horrible, bad staff hiring and developing just plain $ucked. Had Frank stayed with new young staff they could of done things, would of taken time but i think under them they would of been better than what Callahan brought in

    Frank was the rightfull successor to Coach Osborne. Solich would have keep the Huskers playing for west division champions and maybe a Big 10 title. Turner Gill was in line next , and would be in his era right now.
