America is so important in my life that my body shakes by listening to this song. I know about the impressive love and courage that Woody Guthrie put into the creation of this melody: it represents the soul of an inclusive America I want for my kids and family. I want a nation of love, culture, peace, and passion for life. That’s the America that we the people need. That’s my America forever!
The wonderful and amazing thing about Pete Seeger is that he touched the deepest level of human emotion by consolidating beautiful music with the desire to make life on earth a better place for each and every soul living on this planet. This is an irresistable combination. The universal desire for exaltation and elevation of life, combined with the dynamic, mysterious and innate magic of music - how THAT is a transcendent quality. It has the ability to transform, from what exists now to the way things should be. Pete Seeger made use of that transformational ability in so many areas of human struggle. His singing DID create a better world, and showed us how to do it too, through persistence, effort, unification, forgiveness, understanding and JOY. THAT is his greatness as an outstanding leader and legend in human history.

I am not even American, and yet, this is what America is for me. it's truly sad that the Imperial warmongering and arrogance of those an power often tends of to outshine the critical patriotism of this generation. The 60's and 70's were a breathtaking triumph of the human spirit against the evil and corruption of this governing establishment.
The intro is spectacular. Hellerman, Seeger, Guthrie and Judy Collins are a joy to see again and always to listen to but I wish the video went on and on for a while. Studs Turkel you are an interesting commentator for this.
"Was a big high wall there that tried to stop me A sign was painted said: Private Property, But on the back side it didn't say nothing This land was made for you and me." There's a reason this song had to become a hit among the people, and was never played on the radio.
Wow! I spotted Win Stracke out in the audience! He "was an American folk musician and co-founder of the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Illinois. Stracke was a Chicago fixture in music, theater, and television in the 1940s and was known for his booming bass voice. Nationally he was known as "Uncle Win" to viewers of his syndicated children's television show on NBC until it was canceled in the wake of the 1950s blacklist." (~ Wikipedia) When I started kindergarten I played hooky by pretending I was sick, just so I could see his show once more. This Land is your land should & really ought to be the national anthem of the United States, and making the song This land is your land our official national anthem is the right thing to do.
The song is definitely NOT "so quintessentially American" it is demonstrably pro-communist as it dispels the notion of private property..check the 5th "No Trespassing" verse (an easy Google). People in Texas have a saying : Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining (I love Texans!)
This bought back everything we fought for in the '60s .It is so appropriate today when Washington has forgotten who they represent and whose country it belongs to. A great treat to recall Judy and Arlo in their youth.
Pete passed-away yesterday. This version of the song that is the unofficial national anthem contains the often overlooked chorus' on no trespassing on private property and hunger by the relief office.

The "private property" lyrics were from the original 1940 version. The "no trespassing" lyrics came from the 1952 version, also by Woodie Guthrie. There's no conspiracy by Pete Seeger. The "private property" lyrics were interpreted in a broader fashion than Guthrie intended; that's why Guthrie changed them in '52. When Studs Terkel rails against negative songs at the beginning of this video, I have a hunch that high up there on his shit list is Paul McCartney's "Yesterday". I know that depressed song annoyed some people. Thing is, when Paul wrote it he had everything going for him. Success, recognition, money, health, good looks, youth, popularity, talent, you name it.
