Pete Seeger - This Land is Your Land

- Today, May 3 2009, is Pete Seeger's 90th birthday. I can't make the big concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate it, so this is my small tribute to him, an amazing man with an amazing wife, and an amazing life. This was performed at the "We Are One" Presidential Inaugural Concert, January 19, 2009.
The song was written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940, first recorded by him in 1944 at Folkway Records, but not released until 1951.
RIP Pete Seeger May 3, 1919 -- January 27, 2014, Toshi Seeger July 1, 1922 -- July 9, 2013
Discussion, pro and anti Seeger, this song, government, whatever, etc is allowed. However, exceedingly vulgar or hateful comments, and obvious trolling with no reasonable intellectual value, will be deleted.

How blessed Pete got to perform with his grandson. LOVE this song. RIP Pete. We need you now more than ever
We can do it!
I. Met Pete Seeger When I was a little girl. He came to my school. And I had met him at the door and I let in. He had come to talk to the kids about littering. He sang, and even got me to sing. I was six years old , and he told me that he believed that one voice singing out could change the world. I never forgot him. He was a voice that certainly did change the world! A wonderful man! An inspiration!

The world has gone more silent with the absence of Pete Seeger.
We miss you Pete.
More than words will ever convey.

When you see that crowd, amazing crowd & everyone was happy, different races, different age groups, etc. Big fan of Seeger & he was so happy. Singing his best buddy's song, Woody. Not one child doesn't learn that song in school. No praise from the writer, Woody Guthrie. Not like star spangle banner, America, they are told them. I made sure my child knew who wrote it. May the folk singers always live on in our hearts. It what we need now more than ever to reach out to America & the World. Love them.............
So well said
I had the great pleasure to interview Pete Seeger around 1980 for our college radio station, WRPI. Jackie Alper, who sang with Pete and the Weavers, had a a show on WRPI and suggested I go talk to him. He was in a park in Albany where he had sailed with his sloop the Clearwater, and was giving a public demonstration on how to bend wood using a steam box to build your own boat. For all his fame, he was a very non-pretentious guy. I've always liked Bruce Springsteen as well and have so much respect for Bruce's publicizing Pete Seeger to a new generation through his Seeger Sessions recordings.
I was not aware Pete Seeger passed until now after listening to the song: "This land is your land". I had lunch with him and a few others in New Jersey when I visited the USA in 2013 from South Africa. He sang one song for us with his type of guitar. May you rest in peace, Pete. You served God's purpose in your generation.
I saw him play in Monticello NY that same year, he never stopped doing what he loved

When I got out of the infantry after doing two tours in Iraq knee deep in the shit mercing motherfukers I decided to unwind by traveling across the United States of America with no destination, just to see the beautiful country I fought for, and I have never been treated with more disrespect than in my own country, the people of America from small towns are the worst, the land of the free is a myth, the United States is one of the most Draconian unfree places in the world, but with a little bit of elbow grease the next generation can change that and truly make this a country that is free.
Let's Get back to this Day again
When Pete (along with so very many others) were black-llisted by HUAC and was unable to get regular concert gigs he started giving concerts for grade school kids all over the US. Now that was genius! How many of us remember singing this song in grade school? It is a all-American Classic!
He was blacklisted for being a member of the Communist Party. I don't think that was fair. But Pete seemed to make it all look like he was just a picked-on liberal for singing about peace and love.
I have always wondered how some can be so strong to sing such simple truth. @@SandfordSmythe
@austoncole2144 This gets complicated under the rules of the CP USA. He was doing agitprop, propaganda agitation. But that doesn't bother me much because I think he believed in the intrinsic good of his ideals.

Has it occurred to most of us how much the folk/protest music of the 1960’s and later influenced changes in the US cultural attitude? We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who stuck their chins out and used their talent as the impetus to change. Pete Seeger was one of the first, but there were many, many more. Thank you!
What happened to this Land, our Land? I cried through the whole song? Such a beautiful song and beautiful words and an amazing group of singers. May God help us all. We can still have hope to heal our Land.
It should & really ought to be the national of anthem of the United States of America, but it isn’t at all for no reason.
Pete Seeger, words can not describe what a beautiful treasure he was.
Saw him at the Village Vanguard in the Village i think in the late 1950's. Yep...am 80 years young. Despair what's happening to our country... not really ours anymore
As for Bruce, simply nothing and a profound disappointment.
This is so beautiful. Its a shame we all can t live in peace and harmony. We need to love are country and all the people in it. God bless you all.❤❤❤❤❤❤
And today, this song brought tears to my eyes.
Yes.
Today we finally go walking that ribbon of highway
Yes, such hope and happiness! Who is the other guitarist? Bruce Springsteen?
It wasn’t that bad.
Aww
When my daughter was in first grade, her school played a "patriotic tune" every morning over the PA system. I introduced her to this song, asked her if they ever played it, and discussed the backstory. She approached the Principal and asked to have it added to the "patriotic list" Unwittingly the Principal agreed. In 2018, as a college student, she was leading a "social advocacy DACA support" event on the streets of NYC, handed out words to the song and led members of a whole new generation in singing this with enthusiasm. Plant the seeds early and often!
Excellent parenting job! Model parent, thank you for raising the Right Stuff!
Great! Well done!
Probably banned in Florida today.
@@philipo99dutton that’s not sharing a prejudice. It’s reminding their offspring of the beautiful nation we live in from the standpoint of nature. It’s a celebration. I hear no politician’s voice in this, no political party. No religious message. No black or white or brown or yellow… this country’s future can only be improved upon when we the people take ownership, and protect the land and take care of each other.
@@philipdutton785 I still hear nothing but honesty there. No politics.
RIP Pete Seeger. The world is a better place because you once lived here...its sadder place now that you are gone.
In a sense, I’m glad he’s not in here. He would be in tears to see what has happened to his country and the world for that matter.
One of the most beautiful, unifying songs ever written
It is to me Jacobite Bhoy but today some would deride it as "woke". I am however, a proud member of "the woke mob". I think Pete would have been happy to be there with me.
And also definitely a fighting song, a brave challenge to those who would claim everything for themselves. This land was made for you AND ME.
My daughter came to visit me as I was in rehab when Pete passed into his rest. She asked me I I knew who he was, of course I knew who he was. I has his dvd’s in my personal collection. Anyway, I was in rehab far from home when I learned of his passing. I know Pete is sleeping in his grave, waiting for the creator to whisper Pete’s name, and wake him out of his slumber. On the last day of earths history. John 5:28-29. I truly believe that 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 will be a glorious day, as that’s when eternity begins, Being with our creator for eternity.
Watching this today, American Thanksgiving, I was torn....loving the song (which I learned to sing in grade school) and the performance...but experiencing sadness of the days gone by and what we once had in this country, but have no more. Such a loss to the people.
Pete just looks so happy, he's like a Grandfather on Christmas.
He was so happy. Because he thought that maybe we finally won.

This song always, always brings tears to my eyes. As an immigrant, my love for this country knows no boundaries. I just wish all who come here and live here will see we are all one. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
In tears too I bought this lie for nearly 30 years
I love how Pete slipped in the radical verses that get left out of most versions of the song. This is a great American song not because it sings the praises of the country and the people, but because in its full version it has the guts to call a spade a spade and tell us we're not all the way there yet.

What a great contribution to American history. I feel blessed to have lived in the time he walked among us. R.I.P. Pete. You will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. You left a legacy for the generations.
Hello Susan, How are you doing?
WOW, when America was really great.
I’m not American, but I watch a lot of American and global politics. To say things in my home country, the Netherlands, are a mess, would be an understatement. The same goes for the world as a whole. Not only the pandemic, but also climate change, inequality, homophobia, racism and poverty.
Over the past two years, I’ve watched this video over and over and it has given me many different emotions. I have felt melancholic and sad about the state of the world, knowing what it was and could be. But it has also made me hopeful and determined. We, whether it’s the Netherlands, Europe or the US, can achieve incredible things when we work together. At times, I feel desperate and hopeless, but I can’t and won’t give up on humanity. What goes around comes around, we’re all in this together. It’s my strongest, deepest belief and I’ll always fight for that.
This is hope! We miss you Pete! I hope you are smiling and singing today. ❤️🤍💙
Watching this performance live was one of the greatest moments of my life...think about all the people who had tried to blacklist and dismiss Pete Seeger over the years, and there he was at the Lincoln Memorial playing for the man who was about to become President. Of course he had to sing all the words to what ought to be our National Anthem. I kept thinking, well Pete you outlived your haters. I think Bruce was thinking the same thing.
Hopefully his grandson Tao's music will get the reconnection it deserves.
Meg Hammil
yeah, but no progress was made...all pretty and empty speeches.

I do not do this often. However I sense a common bond between u. We both love this country and yet want to find a common way to change it. I have some ideas on this. get back to me. maybe together we can connect people or at the very least I sense a common bond that we might explore. David

Dear Pete, how we miss your voice, and your belief that we can make a better world for everyone. Amazing, yes. And never to be forgotten.
Hello Kathryn, How are you doing?
This Land is Your Land is an amazing song lasting forever through the freedom highway.
Thank the lord that the original lyrics can be sung nowadays. God bless you Pete!!!
I remember watching Farm Aid's videos of him. I thought, man he's still good and kicking.
He died four or so days after....
Need to buy a longneck banjo sometime.
I don't believe he sang all the verses. He only sang the feel good verses.
@@comontater No, not all the verses were sung, I think there are 11 verses (6 in the original, which Woody expanded over time).
But they did sing the 3 verses that have historically been excluded because of their seditious content. "Relief Office", "Private Property", and "Freedom Highway".
@@Pernicion Thanks for that info! I knew which verses the Weavers didn't do but I didn't know there were so many verses.
I was at this concert and one of my most treasured memories was hearing hundreds of thousands singing this together.
Dear Pete I'll alway love your music.
I truly believe every parent owes it to their children to teach them about Pete Seeger! If things like this were to be taught in school, I think kids might have a fighting chance to be happy, accepting, and kind to one another.
Stop the hateful music, the stuff that speaks of saying woman are objects, and is full of disrespect towards others.
We miss you, Pete!! You are much loved, and I hope and pray your legend lives on in our young people's lives.
How beautiful people can be. So much hope and joy.
Listening to this rendition reminded me of how hopeful we were when Obama was elected... Seeger changed the lyrics for this inauguration the lyrics changed are
“on a sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple, by the relief office, I saw my people. As they stood hungry I stood there wondering, “IF THIS LAND WAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME ? “
The last verse criticizes the wealth disparity and inequality. He changed It I guess he felt triumphant when Obama won but 12 years later we are in a worse condition than we were before. Remember never stop protesting!
Would Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen and Barak Obama ever believe that I am sitting in Limekilns in Scotland, overlooking the beautiful River Forth, on a beautiful summers night, still listening to the best ever version of this iconic masterpiece. Love it!

"This land is your land. This land is my land. We stole it from the Native Americans..."
@@flintknudsen2155 Actually, it was shared by all, as land was plenty and people were few. But later huge populations arrived and basically squatted on the land to grab a piece. The Indians did not know how to cope with this, neither did the government, until violence begat violence, and the Indians suffered the most. The song "My Country Tis Of Thy People Your Dying" tells some of the story.
Apparently he said he was o ly going to perform there if he was allowed to sing the whole thing and he was allowed to, so really cool actually.

One of the greatest and most patriotic protest songs ever. We've been blessed by courageous writers and singers like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger
Guthrie wrote it as a protest against fascism. Holding up the USA as a great example against the Nazis, Fascists, and Imperial Japanese.
@@adamwsaxe yes it was written during the war but he wrote other songs with lyrics that were clearly anti-fascist and anti-Hitler. This does not have such lyrics. The more common thought is it was a reaction to the changes in our lifestyle and freedoms coming out of the depression and into the restrictions of war. Wiki even states it as a reaction to the sacharine God Bless America by Irving Berlin. And it was apparently not released to the public until way after the war was over.

What a performance!
A shining moment at the Lincoln Memorial.
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
This land is your land
This land is my land
From California to the New York island
From the Redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me
I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me.
Chorus
In the squares of the city
By the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office
I saw my people
As they stood there hungry
I stood there whispering
This land was made for you and me?
A great high wall there tried to stop me
A great big sign there said "Private Property"
But on the other side it didn't say nothing
That side was made for you and me.
Chorus
Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking on freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
(Last verse not sung)
When the sun came shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

Thanks comrade. As Brecht wrote:
There are men who struggle for a day and they are good.
There are men who struggle for a year and they are better.
There are men who struggle many years, and they are better still.
But there are those who struggle all their lives:
These are the indispensable ones.
Thanks Petw and Woody.
@Wagner PD that's nothing but a myth. I wish i would be financed by sorros
More like there are those who struggle for a lifetime, those are the insignificant ones. The ones who as soon as they start breaking down are thrown out and replaced receiving no gratitude for their work. The ones most alienated by our system. Collectively indispensable for the system, but individually worth nothing. Together we have the force to completely shut down the system. The rich business owners would have nothing if it weren't for the work we've done for them. But in return we get only a fraction of the worth we create.
When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run,
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun;
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one,
But the union makes us strong.
Solidarity forever, comrade!
