    Follow up after previous post. I followed your instructions after purchasing laser glossy sticker sheets from online labels and I'm loving the results! I made sheets of circular labels for the backs of my handmade cards using both Minc and Deco foils and every single label was perfect! Your videos are the best I've found. You're my favorite for how to videos, because I can trust I'm getting precise and honest reviews. You're awesome! Thank you so much!!!

    This video was so amazingly helpful for me! I just wanted to let you know that through trial and error i did manage to cut these perfectly without having to mess with the registration marks at all! I made sure to use an opaque cutting matte instead of the clear one my cameo came with. I then put my silhouette cameo in a dim lit area and closed the lid when trying to register the marks! Worked perfectly for me! Thanks for the amazing video!

    If you put masking tape on the corners of your sticker sheet before printing, the registration prints on the matte masking tape. Not as much fussing around with lining stuff up.

    Spectacular results, Kristen! You really did your "homework" with this project, and we benefit from your dedication. The Minc teal foil is particularly showy. Of course, I have a thing for blue(ish) colors. No doubt, the women reading this are cringing - "Teal is not blue, nowhere close!" What can I say? I'm a guy, and we can detect all of, I don't know, three colors. Teal certainly isn't khaki, so I made it sorta blue. Pathetic, huh?

    I just wanna say I appreciate this video so much and the fact that you respond to so many comments even years later is amazing! I used the onlinelabels clear glossy in my amazon basics laminator with gold minc foil and it foiled the whole sheet - probably too hot like what one of your other commenters said. I just ordered the Heidi Swapp foiler last night since it seemed to work so well for you! Do you have a recommended heat setting? And what fouls have worked the best for you? Thanks again Kristen!

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  5 років тому +1

      Alexandra Hannemann - Thank you so much for the kind words. :) I hope that the Heidi Swapp Minc works out for you as well as it has for me! I have been receiving some reports from commenters and via email that some Minc machines do seem to run hotter than others. I typically use a heat setting of 4 for just about all of my Minc foiling projects, but if you find that your machine runs hot then you'll want to try a lower setting. My two favorite foil brands are Thermoweb DecoFoil and the Minc brand foil. The DecoFoil is a little bit thicker and easier to work with, so I generally prefer it.
      If you do have any issues with the machine running too hot and foiling the whole page, a very helpful viewer recently shared some great tips for dealing with the process when the machine foils the whole sheet, instead of just the stickers. She turns the Minc down to a setting of 1, turns the machine off between foiling and back on again just before foiling and, if there are still problems, places sheets of thicker cardstock on either side of the foil and printed sheet inside the carrier sheet before running it through the machine to allow less heat to get through.

    When I need to use a separate registration mark sheet to cut my stickers, I reprint them, then just cut out the center of the page so I’m left with the border of the paper. That way it lines up perfect with my other page with out having to line up little cutouts of the registrations separately.

      Re: audio. I use a studio microphone by Audio Technica (I've heard great things about the Blue Yeti brand microphones, too), and it's really an improvement from the audio quality that I was getting via my video camera. Then, I clean up the audio and edit out background noise with Adobe Audition ( www.adobe.com/products/audition.html ). I really like the program, and it wasn't too hard to learn the basics. If you have an Adobe CC subscription, I highly recommend downloading it and trying it out.

    Thank you Kristen, your videos are always so helpful!! One quick question, can you only foil on laser printed ink, or will it work on any printed ink? Thanks in advance!!

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  7 років тому +2

      Hi, Victoria, and thank you for the kind words! Yes, you can only use foil with laser printed ink. Laser printers use toner, which is in powder form in the printer cartridge and basically melts onto the paper or whatever you're printing on as it's run through the printer. When you run the laser printed page through the Minc or any other hot foiling machine or laminator, the toner re-melts, and this is what the foil adheres to. This is why regular inkjet ink won't work for foiling.

  • @chriscrossstitcher2593
    @chriscrossstitcher2593 6 років тому +3

    Great video! I was wondering, do you absolutely have to use a laser printer to achieve these results?

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  6 років тому

      Hi, ChrisCrossStitcher! If you want to make more intricate and detailed designs like this, laser printing is the only way that I've found so far to do so. But you can still make foiled designs without having a laser printer. Minc has some pre-printed designs (papers, tags, etc.) that you just need to foil with your choice of colored foil, and there are also reactive mediums available from both Minc and Deco Foil that allow you to create simpler, less detailed designs that you can foil. If you haven't checked it out already, I have a DIY Hot Foiling playlist that includes videos with my results with several of these mediums. You can find that here: ua-cam.com/play/PLv4xrTdEjFgT-t2npENlSki-hiH6Pzk4U.html

  • @schwabaffett

    Thank you for the tutorial! So simple to follow along with and understand! I do have one question. How does your machine know to cut a border around each of the stickers? Did it know to do it automatically, or did you have to find a setting to do it? I am looking to try this with my Cricut, but I'm worried about it cutting even with the sticker edge rather than leaving a border.

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  7 років тому +1

      Hi, Jessie! I've been learning the ins and outs of Cricut Design Space recently, and it handles print & cut differently than Silhouette Studio, which is the program that I use since I have a Silhouette machine. In Silhouette Studio, you have the ability to manually create an offset margin around any image that you want to print and cut. Silhouette Studio also reads lines with a specific color and line weight as cut lines, so I create print and cut ready SVG files with offset border cut lines. Then, I just open them up in Silhouette, print, and cut.
      Cricut Design Space cuts right up to the edge of the image, like you mentioned, and I don't believe that it offers an option to manually create an offset. It also reads SVG files differently than Silhouette Studio, so the SVG files with offset border cuts that are easy to use with Silhouette Studio are a big mess when you open them in Cricut Design Space. Trust me, I tried it! ;)
      I'm going to take this into consideration when developing future products because I definitely want my digital stamp files and cut files to be easy to use for many different digital die cutting machines. In the meantime, I found a video that shows you how to create offsets for Cricut print & cut images in three different software programs. It's a bit more work, but it's doable. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/aQvxOPJw-yY/v-deo.html
      Hope this helps, and I appreciate that you asked about this because it helped me learn more about Cricut Design Space and how it handles print & cut files!

    I recently started foiling too and I have to say the process shown here is a bit cumbersome. I just print and cut first. Then cut my sticker sheet and THEN foil. This way I don’t have to tape off the registration marks or worry it won’t cut right.

    Love this~

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  6 років тому +1

      Hi, Karen Buttery! I don't have a Cricut machine at this time, so I use a Silhouette Cameo for all of my projects. But I've been chatting with a few Cricut users about how to make my designs work easily for Cricut users and have been learning more about Cricut Design Space, too. Technically, you can use the Whimsy Leaves SVG Digital Stamps + Border Cuts in Design Space, but since they're set up for use in Silhouette Studio, there are a couple of extra steps that you'll need to take to make them print then cut files for Cricut. I'm in the process of going through all of my digital stamp + border cut sets and adding files that will make them easy to use with Cricut machines, too, and I'll make a video about it when I'm finished adding the Cricut specific files.

      Thank you sooo much! I searched the whole net but couldn’t find anything about foiling with flat iron.
      I really look forward to the results! In my neck of the woods a laminator would cost me an arm and a leg! So the idea of flat hair iron came to mind as it is pressing heat from both sides unlike an iron for clothing.
      I wonder if it will work with both adhesive and toner techniques...
      If it works I would rather invest on a cheap flat iron for now..:) and you get to be the first to demonstrate such a hack!

      Hi, Marizza! The printers that I've used for foiling have worked well at the standard default settings, but if you're having issues with toner outside the design area when printing, you can experiment with the different media settings on your printer to try and resolve the issue. For example, you may get better results with a sticker paper or glossy paper media setting.

      Hi, ANGGGEFTW! Sorry to hear that you're having spotty results with the Brother. I had been using an old Dell color laser (3130cn - it's been discontinued for a while), but a couple of months ago it started having paper jam problems with everything but regular printer paper, so I recently bought a Brother HLL8360CDW. I need a color laser for my work, so a monochrome printer won't work for my needs. I haven't been using it for long, but so far my results have been good.

      Hi, alvina pascual! I haven't tried making address labels using this technique, but this is a great idea. The foil is usually pretty good at adhering to even small details in a design, but since you'll be using fonts at smaller sizes in address labels, I'd test to make sure that the foil adheres well to whatever font or fonts you're using even at small sizes.

      @jessicastephens3543 5 років тому +1

      I'm running into this problem too! But I did notice that on a lesser heat setting (like at a setting of 3), this does not happen as much. Something that I was doing too though is cutting before foiling.. I just read a comment above that recommends foiling before cutting because the process of cutting and removing sheet from mat can cause toner to flake off.

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  5 років тому

      Michèle Thay - I second what Jessica Stephens said. I typically use a heat setting of 4, but your machine could run a bit hotter than mine, and that could be causing excess bits of foil to stick to the label paper. What brand of foil are you using? Some colors of foil / foil brands seem to adhere at lower temperatures, so this is another reason to experiment with your heat settings. Also, foiling before cutting can resolve any issues that might be caused by removing the sheet from the mat, so I always foil first.
      In addition, sometimes laser printers print excess bits of toner outside the images that you're printing, especially if you've just started using a new toner cartridge. This typically clears up as you use the toner cartridge more.

      Thanks for your reply. I am using a basic laminator not the minc so I can’t control the heat. I did the cut first and then foil, I will try the other way around. Hope that will work :)

    I'm looking for a paper that acts more like washi tape. The one clear one I ordered I made stickers for my white board but I need to be able to easily remove them. Mine isn't magnetic. I foiled them gold for December but I when I tested it, it left alot of residue. I don't know how sticky yours are.

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  5 років тому +1

      Sara Tx - I'd love it if a company made a printable washi tape-like sticker paper. Silhouette America has washi tape sheets that you can cut with your die cutting machine, but they already have patterns on them. :( The sticker paper that I used is a permanent adhesive, so it's pretty sticky. Some companies sell removable sticker paper (Avery, for example), but those can sometimes still be pretty sticky, so I'm not sure how that would work on a white board.

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  6 років тому

      Hi, Jenni Brown! I haven't had to use any special settings with my printer when I print on this sticker paper, but if your printer has a "high quality" or "vivid" setting, you might want to try that because more toner should be laid down with that type of setting. I've gotten better prints with some types of acetate when I choose "transparency" as a paper type. Since the sticker paper is also a glossy surface, if your printer has some sort of paper option for either "transparency" or "glossy photo paper", this may help. Also, I don't know whether you have a color or monochrome laser printer, but I have a color laser and always turn the color settings to black from full color when I'm printing for hot foiling. Hope this helps!

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  4 роки тому

      label q8 - I don't know the exact degree temperature that's ideal for foiling, but it will probably vary depending on what type of foil you're using and what material you're foiling on (cardstock, acetate, sticker paper, etc.). I almost always use the number 4 heat setting in the Minc.

  • @DerrickVLOG

    Following your process, I printed the design on a regular sheet of paper and it worked well. However, when I repeat the process with the OL177CL paper, the foil transfers to the entire page instead of just the printed part. What would you recommend to fix this?

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  5 років тому

      Derrick Benton - What brand and color foil are you using? Also, are you using a Minc machine or a regular heat laminator? I've had this happen with the white Minc brand foil - it adheres in areas where there is no toner on clear sticker paper and acetate (and possibly other surfaces), so it seems that some foils have different properties than others and will stick in places where there's no toner. Also, a few others have had issues with this happening with heat laminators that don't offer an option to adjust the heat level, so it could also be that the laminator that you're using runs on the hot side, which is causing the foil to adhere all over.

    • @DerrickVLOG
      @DerrickVLOG 5 років тому

      @@kdotbecca I tried both minc and deco foil and heat setting 1. I also tried adding a few sheets of paper over and under to lessen the heat. It didn't work. The paper is definitely getting too hot and grabbing the foil.

    • @kdotbecca
      @kdotbecca  5 років тому +1

      The only thing I can think that might be happening is that the Minc Mini runs hotter than the full size (I only have the full size one). That doesn't really make much sense, I know, but I've used the OL177CL with both Minc and Deco Foil many times and have only ever had an issue with the white Minc foil. I wish I could be of more help, but since it's something that I haven't experienced I'm not sure what might be going on.

      Emanuela Grigo - A laser printer is required for foiling printed designs since the foil adheres to the printer toner. For hot foiling, you only need a monochrome laser printer, not a full color one. The Canon 8360 printer is an inkjet, so it won't work for foiling.

I had the exact same issue when I plugged my minc directly into my plug. I tried two diff types of clear labels (the online labels one and a local brand) but the foil was sticking to my entire A4 sheet for both, and the machine was burning up. But after that I bought a step-down converter, and it works a LOT better now. I think it overheats the machine too much.

      Hi, Updstatedoc! You can cut them then foil them, but be careful, especially if you have a new or still pretty sticky mat. Sometimes toner can flake off or crack in areas when you're trying to get the sheet off the mat, and the foiling isn't as solid as a result. This is why I foil before cutting.
