Why JAWS Is Still The Greatest Monster Movie

- Here's a video essay on why JAWS (1975), one of the highest-rated, most critically acclaimed, iconic, and influential films of all time, is actually really good. I tried getting this video out during Shark Week but I got busy with other things unfortunately.

Jaws is one of the few movies I consider to be perfect even if it isn't literally flawless.
The USS Indianapolis catastrophe is an incredible story...Shaw's speech about it is chilling...further reinforcing that there are very scary inhabitants in our oceans and no matter how alpha we may feel on land , in the water we can quickly become prey.
@@OldPirate1718 Shaw's little monologue is the 2nd scariest thing in the movie!
I've always loved Jaws. When you talked about the emotional scenes near the end of the video, I thought of the scene where the jaws'd boy's mom interacts with Brody right after he dies. It's an awesome movie, and the fact its still being talked about by Universal in stuff like the Studio Tour shows how important it was to film as a whole.
@@starman1599 "Jaws'd" would be the best verb in the dictionary 😂
I love this film because of its simplicity. Anything sordid, distracting or irrelevant has been removed from the novel to tell a pure, direct story.
Great Film. Is as good now as it was the first time I saw it in 1975, as a 14 year old with wide eyes and beating heart. My biggest fear then was it was gonna be so graphic that I would just gross out. What it did, was outsmart my expectations and delivered a movie so good, I still remember my initial reaction all these years later. Best buildup to a last ten minutes ever! Great ending!
Who the hell doesn’t like the 3rd act or thinks it’s boring? I’ve never heard that said before, it’s the best part…. The movie goes up a gear, not down, it becomes an adventure story!
As a young kid I can imagine it could be. My kids found it boring when they saw it but when we watched it in the cinema (in 3D) when they were a lot older they loved it.
The only way to have made it better was if Christopher Walkin had played the shark!
The secret to making the biggest monster of all time- don't show the monster. The human imagination is more dangerous than all the violence in cinema!
Indeed. And contrary to the modern myth, that was by design. Spielberg never wanted to show Bruce early on and Bruce was never scheduled to be used for the first half of the film. Spielberg was known as a suspense director (Duel, Something Evil). That was his style at the time. He kept the shark hidden during the first half of the film deliberately.
My family vacation to Holden Beach happened to line up with shark week every year as a kid. I spent a lot of time glued to the tv afraid to go out to the beach. Eventually I’d overcome but I’d always be on edge. Went to Holden beach again this year and was still on edge. Then I got fascinated by my fear and saw the Egypt video. I may actually never go in the ocean again after seeing that. Not an ideal situation.
Thank you
your analysis is very enjoyable and intelligent. I was ten years old when I first seen this on Tv. I seemingly begged my Dad for weeks to allow me to watch it because back then there was only 1 tv in a house usually. So my Dad relented and allowed it and my Dad hardly ever relented but would wish he hadn't. While watching it I was sitting on his knee and when the head pops out the hole I leapt so high I threw my juice all over him and knocked his thank god only warm coffee out of his hand and into his face.
He laughs about it now but back then I got sent to bed and my dad was very wet and hopping mad , but my Mum and two sisters where in uncontrollable hysterics for at least half an hour so my Dad sent my older sisters to bed for laughing at him,
Happy days my three favourite monster movies are in no particular order because all three are classic Jaws , The Thing (Carpenters) and Dog Soldiers a low budget British movie that is as good as the first two. Anyhoo this is by far the longest comment I have ever wrote time to stop.
@@sarahmarks6743 I'm glad you wrote your comment I laughed for a while! So funny.
Chief Brody flicking through pages of 'all the tricks in the book'
Nice work !
I was 14 and our parents took us to PEI for vacation that summer. I decided I'd wait til after that trip to read Peter Benchley's novel. It was a very good decision. Saw the movie in the theatre later that summer. Jaws is one of my favourite films. John Williams is a brilliant composer.
Honestly the dialogue of the movie and character development and pacing is wonderful the story is amazing I hope we get a beautiful retelling one day
No Sequels are necessary and they did that already and Jaws 2 wasn’t very good.
Classic films should never be remade and updated. It’s always a big disappointment.
I have seen plenty of lousy remakes that had better special effects and yet the films were terrible!
Hollywood keeps trying to remake everything because they are out of original ideas. So the next tactic is to make a Prequel. Those get mixed results as well. They usually are not good either.
Nah. It's a timeless classic that doesn't need retold.
@@koda356 No point. If you weren't scared the first time you need a bigger boat.
No, thank you. We would get a terrible, modern re-telling with CGI and very little character development. This movie should NEVER be remade.
Great analysis of THE masterpiece.
There are two monster movies that are my favorite Jaws (1975) and Alligator (1980) and it's because I saw both of these amazing monster movies on TV as a little kid in the 1990s and i consider both of them the greatest monster movies ever created as well:).
Alligator is Not in the same class or caliber or league or whatever with jaws.
The U.S.S. Indianapolis was NOT an "aircraft carrier".
Best movie/tv channel on UA-cam!
I lived in a coastal town - after seeing this as a little boy - i didn't even dip-a-toe in the sea for a long time.
In fact it kept me out of the sea for 20yrs, ha ha ha ha . . . . Cheers Speilberg
Despite the comical robot shark - it doesn't detract from the movie not ONE BIT - Awesome film
Thats because 1. You dont see that much of the shark until the end. And 2. Because of the incredible acting. Especially the 3 main leads. They sell the shark.
Haha! "A massive aircraft carrier", the voiceover says while the video shows a picture of a ship with no carrier deck. USS Indianapolis was a heavy cruiser that carried the atomic bombs used against Japan and which afterwards sank with some of its crew being eaten by sharks.
Never had any problem with the third act; the hunt for the shark is the best part of the film. You're a fine writer, though. Good essay.
well done!!
I remember when I was 12 years old I brought the dvd and watched a bit of it for the first time and got to where we saw the sharks head for the first time eating the man. I was a woos as a kid so I was scared of scary films so this frightened me then when I turned 15 I loved horror and till this day this film is my favourite movie.
makes me wanna watch this movie again
Call video I am a huge fan to ever since I saw it as a kid
A nice commentary. Very nice. It's been my favourite film since I was a kid (born in '84) and one I can watch several times a year (planned) but also stick with if I chance across it on tv, from any point onward. I love this film more than any other. I could sit and write the script from start to finish. It's the goat.
i love Jaws.
not an aircraft carrier
The movie is pretty good. I just wish it didn't have such an damaging legacy on sharks. Shortly after the movie release there was such a massive influx in shark derbys and general trophy hunting it caused multi generational effects on the perspective of sharks. To anyone who grew up in the post 1995 you wont really understand. However, the movie released when information was not as abundant and accessible which left people with Jaws as their main introduction/understanding to sharks.
Shark week, which peter was the first host of also went down this path. Which is why Peter did not return. Shark week actively uses jaws language and editing while claiming to be for educational purposes.
When do you ever create such a biologically damaging fiction novel/movie and end up regretting it. Peter spending the rest of his time undoing the damage he had done. Mundus being the inspiration for Quint also spent much of his later life trying to fix the damage he had done.
I understand the love people had for it especially if they grew up with it but there is a sad lesson to be learned from the movie /book. I hope people who continue to have the jaws effect or just love jaws learn from it and try to alleviate to issues it has created.
I'm the chief of Police. I can do anything. (Except that in truth, he can't, until he overcomes his fears and saves the mf day). A great movie.
Great vid but the Indianapolis was a cruiser and not an aircraft carrier.
Criminey! the USS Indianapolis was NOT an aircraft carrier! It was a cruiser.
Pretty good review with the exception of the completely unsophisticated political hit.
I think it's fair to call it horror adjacent
Fun fact: the reason they are called SHARKS is because when you see one swimming toward you, you don't know whether to say SHIT or FARK.
Sorry dude, love Jaws, didn't love this monotone, impassionate delivery trend. Gave it a go though!
Ok
