I really like Jaws, mainly for its significance to the industry and pop culture, but I never for the life of me understood why Brody, Quint, and Hooper decide that their best plan of attack for killing the shark is to get into a dingy ass boat, with minimal supplies, and coast into the MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN to kill it. WHY?
The shark has already been to the beach several times, killed 2 people, damn near almost killed 4 total. It will be back, I can assure you.
Why do they think that the shark would be out wherever they're going anyways? Why wouldn't it just stay near the beach so it can, you know, attack more people, like it has THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FILM!
If I lived near the woods, and a bear was seen several times near my neighborhood and managed to kill a few people, why would I chase it into its den? Just wait! It will come back!
Throw some blood and guts into the water, ready your harpoons and guns and whatnot, get a giant net. Surely anything you can do from the confines of a shitty ass boat in the middle of the ocean you can certainly do from shore, right? More people. More supplies. More stability. More safety.
After Jaws killed the second victim, the little boy, I don't necessarily think the town would want to be in the water anyways.
Someone explain this to me.

How Robert Shaw was not nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Quint is criminal.
Greg Dodson Probably because he was notoriously difficult to work with and was constantly drunk. That monologue scene is a reshoot after he horribly screwed it up. The end result is amazing though and he deserves credit.
I think it was to natural. I think his performance was - as dumb as it even seems to say this - TOO good, too authentic, and it just got overlooked as "he's not acting, he's just being a guy."
Even though it never directly stated it in the film, I always saw Quint as at least a heavy drinker, if not a full functional alcoholic. For me it always seemed to fit the character so Shaw being a drinker in real life was an ideal fit.

I love the scene at the dinner table when Hooper brings the wine. Despite Hooper being a stranger that barges in, Brody lets him literally eat his dinner as if he is an old friend that just stopped by.
"Is your husband in? I'd really like to talk to him."
"Uh, yes, so would I."
---And opens, pouring the wine over Hooper’s soft objection, plus putting it in the same😱glass he’d been using for the previous wine😆BEST choice dropping the stupid affair and making Dreyfus live💗💕❤️

Y'know what I love about this movie? The fact that it FEELS like summer to me. As someone who spent time at the shore every summer as a kid, this whole setting reminds me of heading down to a summer town, hazy mornings where you can feel the heat as early as 8am, and how much time I spent in the water. To me, this movie does the best job at establishing the feel of the setting.
I love Jaws so damn much.
Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her viginity; not a bad record for this vicinity.

My friend and I love the "A what?!?" guy. Especially as he is all bluster before the line and then his delivery of it

That guy always reminded me of Andy DeVine. He played the sheriff in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
I would also add that the appeal of this movie is it's location, everything takes place in this little town at the ocean. It has the vibe of a summer vacation with you family at the beach. You have your loveable townfolks and a lot is shot narrow in relatively small rooms/sets, which gives the overall impression of intimacy and familiarity. The undergoing threat of the shark is the strongest aspect of the movie, because like in every disaster movie the build up is way more interesting and engaging than the actual disaster itself. On top you have the seafarer culture of the town. That accompanied by Quint's story creates an adventurous and to some degree even spooky and mystical atmosphere. And people love the sea shanty vibe.
The ferry scene with the mayor was the first time I ever noticed a long uninterrupted take as the scenery behind them keeps changing but they stay focused on the characters. Such an amazing movie all around.
I love watching this every summer.
It's still one of the best movies ever.

@@DanMurrellMovies I played more attention to the air-tank rolling into Quint's hand, jarring him loose before he slides into Bruce's gaping jaws. It's an interesting little archetype showing the viewer that eventually, technology will inevitably loosen the hold on every person's adherence to their tried-and-true "older methods." It's a minor moment, but it really shows how much young Steven S. truly knew what kind of story he was trying to tell . . .

A good time to be that age, with "Jaws," "Star Wars," and "Close Encounters." I just got the impression that going to the movies was always going to be like that.

The scene just after "you're gonna need a bigger boat." Quint out on deck eyes narrowing as he sees the shark for the first time, the music & the swim alongside where you see the actual side of the shark is just brilliant cinema.
Favorite line in Jaws: Hoooper -"Can you tell me if there's a good restaurant or hotel on the island?" Fisherman - "Yeah, you walk straight ahead". Such a quick little exchange, but I always found that joke so funny!
"I think I'm familiar with the fact you are going to ignore this particular problem until it swims up and bites you on the ass!"

This is my favorite movie. I watch it every summer before the 4th of July each year while drinking apricot brandy. It perfectly captures what summer felt like as a kid in the 70’s. I love the 3 main characters and their relationship ! This video you made was top shelf ! It made me consider aspects of the film I hadn’t before despite dozens of viewings. Thanks
Two things-
1- Dan mentioned "Perfect Movies" as a possible topic during the "Why I left Screen Junkies" video. This video shows why I want that topic explored more than any other.
2- You need to be on at least one episode of "Best of the Worst".
He'd have to get pretty lubricated--though seeing as they're in Wisconsin shouldn't be too much of a problem. Would Mac shove over though to let him in? If he did it, they should have him on with Jack and pretend he's a long lost brother.
One thing that has just struck me about the name of the boat - 'Orca', what can Orca whales do? Attack and kill sharks. Jeez, how have I only twigged this after 30 odd years of watching this movie lol. Great in depth analysis Dan, which is no real surprise really and why I tune in to hear some knowledge and compare thinking. Keep up the good work 👌
It's amazing how so many things went wrong during production such as the shark continuously breaking down, hardly seeing the shark throughout the first half actually made it more terrifying
I can't help but sometimes wonder the 'what if' scenario if Bruce had worked as intended? Would we still have had a genuine classic, a decent film or a well made film let down but an unbelievable shark. Given how it turned out, I'm glad we'll never know.
Bruce was not meant to be used during the first half of the story. The beach scenes were filmed in May and June 1974 and the first usage of Bruce was not scheduled until July for the Orca scenes. Besides, the beach attack scenes were only in a few ft of water and Bruce needed twenty ft of water. The first half of Jaws went to plan and Jaws was only a few days behind schedule when filming moved out to sea.
"Jaws is unafraid to *make waves* " I noticed that little pause for you to laugh Dan. This is the content I am here for.
Also, this is a superb look into the movie. I'd love a series of this where you go through reasons why you love certain things. I would definitely be interested if you could do one for Star Trek, if you can.

I love Jaws too!! Never get tired of watching it. So much greatness in this movie. My favorite line is "You're gonna need a bigger boat"!
The Conversation is one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember the first time I saw it, it’s not a horror movie, it’s sort of a mystery but there is such an incredible feeling of helpless paranoia in that last scene, it’s one of the few movies that really left me with strong emotions, being creaped out long after it was over. Blue Velvet and Pulanski’s film The Tenant had similar effects. Believe it or not, I’ve never seen Jaws. After seeing this I think I will finally check it out. One topic I would like Dan’s take on is the complaint from people like Scorsese that comic book movies aren’t “real movies”. To me the dominance of comic book themes isn’t the issue, it’s the emphasis on huge blockbusters that has shifted so much of movie making to special effects over characters, dialog, and plot.
Just watch Iron Man, the first one. Constant characterization. I can think of a half-dozen scenes right away that compel me to re-watch just to see them again.
The scene where Pepper is pulling the power supply from Stark's chest. The multiple scenes of Stark creating the suit and the fantastic debut "suit up" sequence with the circling camera. Basically the whole cave sequence.
@@Selrisitai I've seen Iron Man 1 and I agree, it was an excellent movie. As a scientist and engineer I especially loved some of the scenes you mention where it shows him developing an initial version of the suit, testing it, having things go wrong, etc.. It's really rare to see a movie show a scientist actually doing science! I even liked the sequel which most people didn't like for the same reason, the scenes of him understanding the need for a new element and building a particle accelerator in his basement. This was nerd wish fulfillment at its best. I just think that since those films everything has become so formulaic. Also, the way the multiverse is used now to mean anything that happens in one film can always be undone in the next. Death never matters unless the actor is sick of playing the part. I haven't watched a Marvel or DC movie all the way to the end in many years because they all seem to be catering to the lowest common denominator now. I feel the same about virtually all modern Hollywood movies. It is really rare to find some new idea because all the emphasis is on big expensive movies with expensive, overpayed stars and CGI.
One of the rare films that are better then their source material
To each his own, but I respectively disagree. I enjoyed the details of the book as far as life on Amity. The kids karate chopping the pickets on the fence(that was touched on in the film), the prospective of the shark is explained more in the book(kind of hard to do in a film), and the affair of Mrs. Brody and Hooper as a side drama(again too much story for the film). I love the movie and the book both for different reasons, but the book wins in my opinion.
@@pauljoyner4338 Say whaaaaat. Only about 20% of the book is good. Its stuffed with filler and none of the characters are very likeable.

Jaws 2 is actually a better book to me. Its enjoyable throughout.

I'm glad they didn't include the whole mob storyline from the book in the film.
I think it would've just muddled the primary storylines and taken away from Brody's character arc.

I found the book to be very slow and it went in different directions that wouldn't have worked for the film, which they focused on being about the shark problem - which is what the audience went to see. Without the book however, we wouldn't have got the film, so I guess both work in their own way. I heard that there is a novel based on the film, but I've never come across it.
@trha2222 Indeed; the book is still a good read in my opinion and it lead to this superb film. I just pointed out that some of the plot points in the book weren't needed in the film; eg: Ellen's affair with Hooper (as you pointed out), Vaughan's involvement with - mafia? It would have been too much unnecessary plot for the film - which was solely to do with the problem of a killer shark - but it worked in the book. It still slowed the story down however, but I guess it was just filler. Certainly, the latter part of the book was more enjoyable for me, when they were hunting the shark. I still have the book, but I'm wondering if it's still available now.

What I like about brody is that he's a real character, we view the excitement of his adventure , the fear and the Conquer , Roy Scheider was smart enough to not overboard the character and that's the reason of why Jaws ( among other things) sells the picture so well
Jaws aged real well and memorable. One of my favorite movies that I would rent at blockbuster as a kid. I’m 30 now and my kids love watching Jaws.
The one thing that always separated Brody from the rest for me was the fact that he always wore a dark t-shirt on the beach when everyone else was shirtless or in a bathing suit. Thanks for the vid Dan. It's great!

Jaws, I saw the film upon release, nearly 45 years later it still has bite. In my view Robert Shaw gave one if not the best performances in cinema history. I was inspired to create with a friend a working model tribute to the film and the Orca, I named her Amity and she sails at every opportunity..
Just introduced my daughter to this 3 weeks ago. She loved it. It's one of my all time favorites, and each time I watch it, I realise I should watch it more often.
Jaws has always been my favourite movie. It was one of the first films I saw with my Dad, and I will never forget the first time I saw it. Every rewatch allows me to pick up something new. I love this movie and I love this video!!! Thanks Dan 😁

You should watch it. It's worth it and has so much to enjoy on so many levels, many of them pointed out by Dan. It's considered a masterclass in filmmaking and with good reason.
As soon as "That Guy" was mentioned, I knew it had to be "A whaaaaat?" guy.
Dan sounds palpably happier and more enthused now that he's up and running, fully embracing the things HE'S passionate for. This channel was such a good move for you Dan. The joy and is lightness in your voice talking about what you love is what WE love to hear.
I saw “Jaws” in a theater when I was ten years old upon its initial release and it’s easily my favorite film. It’ll never get old and it’s always just as good as the day I saw it. I appreciate the great overview. Dan, you have a really great channel. 👍

Very good analysis, Dan. My favorite thing about this movie is also its cinematography. During that final act, the sense of isolation within the vast expanse of the sea is palpable. Spielberg went to great lengths not to film a speck of land during the boat scenes. And it pays off tremendously.

We are totally living the Jaws Dilemma: We need to open the beaches to get those 'summer dollars', but if we open them people will die from a killer shark - We need to open the economy to avoid a reccesion, but if we open it people will die from Coronavirus... You know you are watching a great movie when one or some of its themes feel relevant after 45 years... Great choice to start, Dan, and not just because it's one of my favorite films.Also, one of my favorite scenes is Chief Brody being imitated by his son... oh, and that guy. Thanx!!

@Finn MacCool no, it's pretty much money over life. The same happened over the Spanish flu. You know which areas did markedly better? Those who self quarantined long enough to contain it. Those who worried about instant needs suffered mightily over the long term and was far more costly. I'm sorry but science never had a liberal bias... It's the other way around...

Just showed my wife and 8-year-old son Jaws and we had such a blast. I didn’t think they’d dig the dialogue scenes but man this movie is so good. Great work as always Dan.
This is the exact kind of video I love to watch. Incredible job, Dan. The passion really came through. Jaws for me (as someone younger) has always been a film I've appreciated a lot, historically and as a really good film, but I've never really loved it. I usually went back to things like E.T. or Last Crusade if I felt like a Spielberg fix. But you really added to it for me! I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Such a good film and for many of the reasons that you mentioned. The score is really something else. Obviously the main theme gets recognition but other tracks such as when they are tracking it with the barrels has a wonderful excitable feel to it.
Agreed. And some of the most effective music in the film is also the most subtle. For example when Brody is flipping through the pages of the shark book, or after he alerts Quint to the barrel at the stern. I also love the score when the men are putting the cage together. It has a real urgency to it that changes to something that suggests Hooper may not survive this. Great stuff.
"Harry is famous, Ron makes faces, and Hermione does everything." I admit that I chuckled, although arguably that happens mostly in the films, in the books it's not as egregious. By the books' standards Hermione is the Hooper, Harry is the Brody, and Ron is the Quint of the trio.
I completely agree. It made me chuckle a bit as well. But I would go even further to say that it’s inarguable that the films made Hermione the competent hero because she was the screenwriter’s favorite character. He gave her a lot of Ron’s lines and personality.
@@jonasbrothersluver73 I think that point is not up for debate. It is so blatantly obvious to anyone who read the books that so much of Ron's big moments are given to Hermione. I would go as far as to say as the big chess match in the first movie is really the only time where they truly allowed Ron to shine individually.

When you started talking about the dynamics of the trio, I was like, "yeah, just like Kirk, Spock and Bones!" And of course, you mentioned them. Lovely. I absolutely agree with every single point you made. Jaws is one of the most perfect movies ever made. I've shown it to a good friend, who had never seen it before, a few years ago, and I watched her reaction to the head as well. Besides really enjoying the movie, she kinda doesn't like going for a swim now as much as she used to. 😉

I realize how lucky I was to be able to talk to you on SJU literally the day after I saw this movie for the first time. My theater plays it every summer and I've gone every single year for the last 4 years. Everytime I see it I notice something new and every time you talk about it you share something I hadn't noticed before. I'm not sure why it took until I was 33 to see this movie but it was worth the wait.
I've loved this movie since I first saw in it during a highschool Oceans class. I used to skip classes often but there was no way I missed the next class to see the end of the movie.
I too love Jaws. One of my favorite childhood memories was watching this for the first time with my dad. Great video and I can't wait for more.

Before the movie theaters closed, was able to go to my local mom & pop movie theater to see Jaws again on the big screen. Love this film.
Jaws was my Father's favorite movie. Because of that, I have grown to like more and more of the years. After my dad's death, this has now become one of my favorite movies overall..

I’m so glad you added in the “A what?” Guy. He was always my favorite accidentally funny parts of the movie. I even made him a meme that my wife and I share between each other.
The "holiday roast" sequence is still my favorite scene. I'll never forget watching "Jaws" for the 1st time as a 7 year old, feeling that anxiety when the piece of the pier turns around and follows Charlie back towards the dock. "I can't get up! I can't get up!!" Still gets the heart pumping!
I'm always scrambling my feet up to the couch. so the shark won't get me.

I stopped watching screen junkies years ago, but Dan was always my favorite part and the only thing I missed from the channel. He was the only one whose opinion I took seriously because he was the only one who wasn't focused on being "#funny". Glad the MF champ is doing his own thing. I'll be subscribing to this.

Jaws was a perfect film when I first saw it in 1975. It still is. It is will stand the test of time.
I also saw it in 1975. I remember thinking I don't know who this Spielberg guy is, but if he can have an audience in the palm of his hand like this, what kind of movies will he make next year, and five years from now, and ten years from now?

Thanks for doing this Dan. My grandparents showed me this movie when I was growing up in the 90s. Just like you said, it pulls me in every single time I see it, and it's the only movie I've watched multiple times a year besides Rocky.

Jaws is one of my all time favorite movies. I actually saw it at the cinema back in ‘75. I was 8 years old & yes it traumatized me & that’s why it’s always held a special place in my heart. I’ve seen it more times than I can count. Great video!
I think a subtler setup/payoff is when Quint's hand gets rope burned when the shark pulls the rope from his hand, and when Brody is trying to reach for his hand, he can't hold on as well. Granted, he would have probably fought through the pain when his life depended on it, but I like to think it played a role.
Liked it before even watching it. We got you, Dan.

We saw this movie when it first came out; that dinner on the boat has always been one of my favorite bonding scenes: I loved how Quint and Hooper finally were able to find the common denominator between them. And it pays off when Hooper is in the cage, and confesses: "I got no spit", answered by Quint's wordless glance of sympathy.
I'm 52 and since 75 I've seen jaws over 500 times. The best!

@@AaronTheDogMMA Seriously? Okay ... um ... well, back in the day, The Exorcist scared the shit out of a lot of people. How did you find it? And please don't say, "I found the DVD on the shelf and there it was!" No really; I'm sure you're aware of how people were disturbed by that film. It is a slow starter, but it works on character development and story building - something that's severely lacking in modern horror films. What was your opinion of it?
@@FerDeLance06 I thought the performances were stunning and the obvious horror aspects were less effective than the psychological and more subtle horror tones. The hospital scene was terryfying

Jaws has been one of my favorite films since childhood. I had a pleasure of seeing the film on the big screen last summer during special screening. It was amazing experience! Great analysis Dan!
This has always been my favorite movie. I had it in BETA, then VHS, VHS Special 25th Anniversary, DVD Special 25th Anniversary and finally on Blu Ray remastered special edition
And next month it's being released on 4K UHD. I'm perfectly happy with the blu-ray, however. Universal did a great job restoring it. Like you I've had it in every format (except beta), including a 20th Anniversary Signature Collection laserdisc!
I taped it off the TV onto Beta, and the taped "Oh, God!" over it because it had 4 stars while "Jaws" had only 3. It took time for "Jaws" to be viewed as a four-star classic.

This is so Great Dan. When I was seven or eight, my parents took me to a mom and pop video rental store to get a movie. I don't know why, but the horror section was right next to the kiddie section. When I saw the cover of Jaws I had to have it. I also don't know why my parents agreed to rent it, but they did. Jaws was also the first movie I bought on DVD when those became popular. This movie also has a special place in my heart.
I really appreciate that you brought up the much better choice for Ellen in the movie versus the book. That whole side plot in the book was...bad.

One of the most formative elements of my many rewatching of Jaws has to be my interpretations of Brody’s character. As a kid and even in college I saw him as the heroic brave and resourceful. Only as an adult have I realized how terrified Brody was throughout the entire film. This only makes him all the more brave. He’s deceptively calm even through the hail of sweat.
When the master tells you to rewatch in the recommended Mono sound, you do it. I did and it did not disappoint.
Much better that way
