Rob Parissi, writer, lead singer, lead guitar, and producer of Play That Funky Music performing at the R&RHOF 2008 fund raiser for educational endowments.
Rob Parissi, I don't know if you read these comments, but thanks for one of the greatest songs of my youth (and adulthood, and middle age, lol).I just finished watching your live performance on The Midnight Special for about the thousandth time and saw this video right underneath. Just had to watch. Another great performance. 59 years old living right outside Philly and I will listen to this until I die. I also have to say you had one of the greatest album covers of all time.
Hi Francis, I agree 100% with your comment. You said it better than me. I love this song!! Always have and always will. I have the Wild Cherry Cassette...back then the song was so different..beat, guitars, drums..Wild Cherry song..made any drab day, at work, into a Funky Time in the kitchens I supervised. Yay!! Thanks, Laura from NH
Wow, just AWESOME!!! I'm the lead guitar player in a band and whenever we play your song the roof goes off the place, no matter what venue or age range, no joke. It is still as awesome a song as it ever was, thank you for your talent and giving us other guitar players something to aim for!
The guy is still groovin' as hell ! This is one of the hookiest and best pop tunes in the history of music. Like lots of pop masterpieces -many Beatles, or Bee Gees hits-, I heard it was composed in what, 30 minutes or so?
Awww Man, THE best funk - the beat and the lyrics - - There are just times when this tune is in my head and I just HAVE to hear it. Once I walked into a clinic and went up to someone I knew and just started singing this and he came right in with it, I knew he would, that's why I went up to him while he was sitting down and began singing this. And we weren't quiet about it, either. We were singing and added, till you die???? When we got to the back the guy that watches everything said he thought it was the radio especially when he heard the, till you dIE ?? ROFL so I guess we didn't do a bad job of getting down with PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC WHITE BOY. There's not many places you can walk into and just begin singin' with the other people there joining in all singing and getting down in full force. It was good. Thanks WILD CHERRY for composing the best funk tune and the best and most played funk tune in the world 💋💋💋
Prior to Play That Funky Music Whiteboy, Wild Cherry used to play almost every Saturday night at the Whitehouse in Wellsburg, WV. They also played frat parties at Wahington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA which is my hometown. Rob sounds the same now as he did back then.
He had to go on back there and see if things were still the same. And they were still rockin and rollin to "Play That Funky Music." It still is a RED HOT HIT.
Rob is tha man!! I sent him a comment, and he replied to me; HOW cool is that?! woohoo! I have the Play The Funk album, and the Super Hits album, and am gonna go home and listen to one tonight! I used to have the eponymous CD, and a 2nd copy of Super Hits, but they both 'mysteriously' vanished from my car... lol ... careful who you let ride in your car, I guess... anyhow -- How exciting!
We knew Joanne, a friend of my wife. She was a beautiful Eurasian woman who played the most incredible piano at Max's Opera Cafe in the nineties when I was going to school up in the Bay area. Joanne was his wife.....
Wow, what a crew. We aren't really getting old, are we? It's really cool seeing all those faces again. I got a special kick out of watching Will Lee, he's always been one of those guys you could refer to as a real professional musician. Not very many people can do what he does and make it work on every single level.. and I mean the entire music spectrum when I say that.
very talented band. in those days they had and have skills , now technology does everything press a button drums guitar etc piano sound like the guitar it sound like one big mess. Nothing like the real thing.the artist put his feelings into the instruments.and into their songs.
Ever notice something? No matter where they played it, when they played it, how they played it or even how they played it, your feet always always found the groove, and it was always with that white boy!
I, the Impaler am a big fan of Wild Cherry. I even own the album Electrified Funk. My bandmates and I talk about it often. Please check out Dangerous Pleasure if you ever get the chance, we're on youtube.
@Deathsiren It's so funny you'd call the band behind me a wedding band. This is iron clad proof you have absolutely no idea whom you're both talking to, and talking about. So sad to witness the deaf, dumb, blind, and ignorant.
No. It wasn't considered racist in 1976-- AT ALL! If anything, it was high praise to all the black funk artists that went before them and showed them not just how to do it, but taught them how to _FEEL_ it. It's why musicians all have their preferred genres. Everyone's body works in their own, unique way. Some folks are built for rock like Mick Jagger, Peter Frampton, Jimi Hendrix, and yes, Rob, too, while some folks are built for pop/soul like the ALL of the Jacksons, Tina Turner and Dianna Ross. Some dancers are built for ballet, some dancers are built for hip-hop and others are meant to dance on a pole. It just depends on what the person performing feels and the way their unique physicality responds to the music.
This song started me playin bass, never stopped, still jam with this song.....50 yrs later👍🏼🇺🇸🍻🤘🏼🔥

We knew Joanne, a friend of my wife. She was a beautiful Eurasian woman who played the most incredible piano at Max's Opera Cafe in the nineties when I was going to school up in the Bay area. Joanne was his wife.....

Holy shit i wasnt expecting it to be that tight because they were having some problems lol 😅
Maybe you just need more clue, and less cowbell.
+Rob Parissi I enjoy seeing guys like you, Mark Avsec, Donnie Iris that managed to navigate that era, and still emerge solid and down to earth.
You're still jammin' on that guitar and rockin' out on that song!
I, the Impaler am a big fan of Wild Cherry. I even own the album Electrified Funk. My bandmates and I talk about it often. Please check out Dangerous Pleasure if you ever get the chance, we're on youtube.
Eres el mejor, Saludos desde México, éxito en lo que hagas

@Deathsiren It's so funny you'd call the band behind me a wedding band. This is iron clad proof you have absolutely no idea whom you're both talking to, and talking about. So sad to witness the deaf, dumb, blind, and ignorant.
Rob Parissi

Was this song ever considered RACIST?
