Play that funky music, white boy
Lay down the boogie and play that funky music 'til you die", heh heh

Proof that soul is colorless. Some ppl are just born with an extra helping of it imo.
A lot of it is definetly nuture, how we were raised plays a part in how strongly were able to express ourselves
I LOVE the way you explain this!
I agree. I grew up with rock, pop, Motown, jazz, the British Invasion and color never once crossed our minds. Sadly, if a white group did this today, the Thought Police would arrest them for hate speech and being racist. Where did the love go?
Jam
Wait...OMG I THOUGHT THE SINGER WAS BLACK!?? IM SHOCKED! 😂😂😂 he Sounds great.
Trisha Kay Paytas same here thought afro american who sang this song love it
"Play that funky music white boy"
I thought so too.
I thought it was a woman

This song packed the floor whether white or black club 71 year old black woman and still listening in 2024 ❤
👌💐🙏
I'm a 71 year old white guy and I'm still listening, and grooving, and moving to the music y'all
62 year old white guy. When this groove dropped at the dance in the school cafeteria, NO one was in their seat!
Boy does this song bring back some good times ❤
This song was hugely popular in "the hood" for a while and at its peak I happened to be on a bus full of black people in Baltimore and they all sang me this song (I'm white). Even the old ladies knew the chorus and they all made it into a delightful prank, of sorts. It was a very special experience which I cherish.
That's heartwarming!
it is a very black sounding white band...
I spent about 30 years of my life thinking the lead singer was black LOL
You spent a whole lot of time not paying attention to the music you listen to then lmao
Great story!
I'm black and these boys jam!!!!!
Proof good music is good music!!
100% true.
That " Good music " is funk!!
The licks are a bit brash, the beat a bit loud, but the soul is still there. Where'd it go today?
Play that funky music black boy 😄 🤣
Music tends to be a universal language. There are people in Mongolia jamming to Metallica, one band (The Hu) did a cover of "Sad But True".
Reported this video for containing obscene amounts of funk.

Oh, no, you've got to be kidding. Look it up in a dictionary, that word f**k is in my Oxford Dictionary since 1980. It's well spread over the world for many years. LOL.
Who else is listening to this on this Friday night March 2024??? Play that funky music white boy!

All these years later and this song is still an absolute banger.
This song and Hollywood Swinging are my favorites from the disco era.
ha you have no taste
I concur!
This song will always be a big time banger peace out
Yes I love this song
With this song, it is simply impossible to be in a bad mood.😄😎
I imagined a black guy with a Strat when I first heard the song, not a white guy with a Les Paul like this lol
Me too !
Good memories. Riding in my girlfriends car with windows and listening i g to this song full blast.

As soon as you perm your hair and get an Afro. You know you're gonna have soul. 🤗
This is one of the greatest songs to come out of the '70s. Period.
it was definitely, ONE.
Without a doubt!
Brings good old memories🤣
The bass player has me tripping with his dance moves😂😂🤟🤟
Mans was on that good 70's blow
He did that when he first started singing that song.
I'm 83...had my 16 year old g-dayghter listen to it & now we're Wild Cherry fans together...I smile when I hear it! Always one of my favs!
The music was so much better back then.
Need I say more?
I'm 62 and thank God, aliens or whoever is up there for letting me exist on this planet when music was at its greatest.
Thats funkadelic, baby! 🤩
Classico nunca sai de moda...Tamo junto!!!
Beautiful !!
Is this the funky music the white boy is playing, or is this telling the white boy to play the funky music?

Wild Cherry was an American funk rock band best known for their song "Play That Funky Music".

Wikipedia › wiki › Wild_Cherry_(b...
Wild Cherry (band) - Wikipedia
It's like the old 'movie in a movie' conundrum: They're playing a funky song as a back-narrative to the funky experience the singer had while checking out a funky music scene. "Mind blown, maaannnnnnn"
Both
I have told the person in charge of my funeral arrangements what music I want played. It's mostly traditional Christian hymns and such, but when the memorial is over and it's time for everyone to view me for the last time I want them to strike up "Play that Funky Music" to get everyone in a happy mood. This is like one of the greatest songs ever, especially from the 1970's. 1976, sixth grade. We were so cool. We may be old geezers now but we are still cool when this is our theme song.
OMG Me too!!
Great idea! I like it!
Great funeral song.
How I wanna go:
I want to "lay down that boogie and play that funky music till I die."
Lol! Yep!
Best decade for music!!
this band was going to rock, but a guy in a well-known bar told him they would not dare to play funky music, the composer created it at the time, shit, they did it right :)
It's an urban legend, dude...

Play that FUNKY Music White Boy😂😂
We also let her know, they were from Southern Ohio.
If you love this song, you have GREAT taste in music and can probably dance very well!!
This was a massive hit until the band appeared on Soul Train and the black people realized the band was white. It came as no surprise if you actually listened to the lyrics.
I always thought it was a black band till now.
I have heard this story before. Never knew it was on Soul Train. No videos back then, people heard the song and loved it so who knew they were funky white boys at the time?
Was also LIVE AND NOT LIP SYNC which was standard on that second rate show compared to Midnight Specual who showcased talent across the spectrum.,,
They weren't trying to hide it the song says it all
Blue Eyed soul.
Today would have been my sister's 57th Birthday & this was her song! She would just break out dancing & happy. Her name is Pamela & she went home 2 years ago, miss her dearly. I will be playing this all day dancing & happy.
What a wonderful memory of Pamela!
I wish I would have known you and your brother Pamela, we sure the hell would have been funking out in every way! I'm 62. RIP you funky, beautiful soul.
What a Beautiful memory of your sister ❤ so sorry for your loss ❤
Who's getting their Disco on in 2024.😂
70s pop music was so much fun. Glad I had it as the background in my childhood.
My mom has a friend whose mom dated the drummer.
Caroline Stocks wow, cool
I am the drummer!! Lol
Did he pop her wild cherry?
Nice
It's always the drummers
The only way how I found out that this band is Caucasian was when they appeared on Soul Train back in 1976
Right on!!
But...the lyrics are literally play that funky music...white boy...
"play that funky music white boy"
@@TravelingFancyPants Why would he refer to another white boy that way
bet it shocked the dancers and Don Cornelius.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITES ! I STILL play it in my car ! (AND I'm 78 !)
No exaggeration, you could not get away from this song in the '90s. It was at EVERY party, wedding, school event, dance... everywhere around me. 🤘🎶
And thankfully it still is. I was at a friends wedding last month where it is was all country music except this song.

There were several white bands we thought were black artist. Wild Cherry/ Average White Band were two of these extraordinary funk bands. They sure knew how to make music to dance to. Great stuff. Great memories!🤗😍
Hall and Oates did a pretty good job, too!
KC and the Sunshine band were a hot item at one time.

Omg this bloody song gets me on the dance floor everywhere 😂
A few years ago, on Bourbon st, in New Orleans, a band with the stage facing the street started to do this tune... Well, me and hubby had to dance and all of a sudden we were joined by oh 150 or so of NOLA's partying tourists and we danced and movin to the groovin!!! It was so good we hollered until they played it again. And everywhere you looked, up and down the street, we were all dancing and enjoying each other, like it was our last night on earth! And then, we all went our separate ways, saying goodbye, thank you! and love you! Young, old every race, for a moment in time, we're the best friends in the world.... One of the best nights of my life and a cherished memory... Of course every time I hear this song, I'm back in Bourbon st, in my favourite city....
Great story… would have danced too if I was there! Thanks for sharing… I can see it in my mind… a great song bringing out joy in people
Thank you! You would have loved it! Dancing with 150 of your closest friends and beautiful ladies. One day I'd like to go back and see if these memorable pleasures can be had, just one more time. Made everyone feel alive and 17 again. Stay safe and keep enjoying the good stuff.

This song made The Vocalist Rob Parissi a Millionaire! Deservedly So!
This is what you call music!!!!
When i first heard this song in the movie celtic pride in 97, i thought it was sing by african american and from the 80s, never realize its from 70s and the band was white. So ahead of its time...
I remember roller skating to this at 10 years old I'm the 1970s with all of the stoned hippies
Still a tune in 2024!!!
Super tight & studio quality vocals... doesn't appear to be dubbed in either. Impressive!
Fun fact: The original working title for this song was "Play That *Fucking* Music White Boy". However the producers and label record strongly advised such a thing. The band was upset with the decision and instead of rebellion, they I kid you not, low keyed the F Bomb to Funky. However in the recording booth they were to slightly tilt the F Bomb to Funky as their form of protest. So first shout will be Funky and the second is Fucking and the third is Fucking 😅
I'm 74 years-old now and I'll never forget this song back in the day!!! Everybody was dancing, (or trying to) when this song was playing!!

A #1 hit for Wild Cherry in September 1976. It also went to #1 on the Rhythm & Blues charts, the Cash Box charts, and the Record World charts. It went to #12 on the National Disco Action charts. Outside of the US, it went to #2 in Canada, #4 in The Netherlands and New Zealand, #5 in Australia, #6 in Belgium, and to #7 in the United Kingdom.

My music teacher in 7th grade told me that he and his friends had a band. And their was a "rival Band. " The leaders name was Rob Parissi. They were all friends and they would brag about the gigs they would get.Well they went to college. The rival band asked my teacher if he wanted to go to Vegas. Well being in college he said no. They told him they would be back in a week. Well a week went by and then another on and then another one. He was driving home from his job at the time and this song came on. The song ended and said who it was by. Immediately he pulled over the car. His old friends who had left for Vegas are the members of this band. He says now he wish he would have went. Lay down that boogie and play that funky music till you die
Till you die, oh till you die
I tried to understand this
I thought that they were out of their minds
How could I be so foolish (How could I)
To not see I was the one behind
So still I kept on fighting
Well, loosing every step of the way
I said, I must go back there (I got to go back)
And check to see if things still the same
Yeah they was dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin'
And just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted
Play that funky music white boy
Play that funky music right
Play that funky music white boy
Lay down the boogie and play that funky music till you die
