You're not the only person who hates depth of field blur... It's basically nearsightedness simulation. I hope they give us the option to turn it off.
Great review man
And you look incredible
@@xieulong you can turn it off
@@alexclaton Really? I don't have the beta so i didn't know. That's great news though.
Suikoden in all but name. That’s all I needed to hear. Cant wait for this.
RIP Murayama.
So sad that Murayama didn't live to see the game become a success among fans
Whaaaat? I had no idea that he passed away. I was a Kickstarter contributor for Eiyuden Chronicle so I was getting updates from them over the past few years in my email, but didn't read all of them. The news was probably in the most recent update. That's terrible. Just when he was finally able to live out his dream of bringing Suikoden (under a new name) back from the grave, he succumbs to illness. Heartbreaking for fans of his work, all his colleagues in the gaming industry, and probably for the future of Eiyuden Chronicle as a franchise. I hope Rabbit & Bear keep working on the next chapter of Eiyuden Chronicle and don't let this derail them.
@@acidwizard6528They told us in the February email, and this month they let us know that backers wouldn't receive anything signed by Murayama. Sad news all around.
@@acidwizard6528yeah sadly he passed a month or so ago. Hopefully they keep going with this series and Konami honors him in some way when the Suikoden remasters come out.
Losing Toriyama and Murayama both before their time, in under a month is quite a gut punch. Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Suikoden, Dragon Ball that basically was my childhood and teen years.
Sorta kinda hoping they don't punish people who enjoy grinding as they did in the suikoden series.
FF Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord and now this gem 💎 Sweet Baby Jesus let it rain!
Glad it's not that Sweet Baby Inc bullshit.
Hopefully sooner we will get Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood as well, this year already stacked with good Jrpg list🎉
@@davidtimmer596Christ you sweet baby inc. guys are annoying. No one cares.
Japanese games are booming again and I'm here for it.
Don't forget, we still have Thousand Year Door and Suikoden 1&2 remakes coming later, and "maybe" Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D.
The world map is one of the biggest casualties of the modern era in RPGs in my opinion
Thanks to modern technology, developers can make much more open and immersive RPG worlds, “let’s just make an action game instead” :/
Totally agree. I've been into maps and atlases since I was a kid, and always enjoyed the world maps in the RPGs I would play. They really give a sense of scale to the experience and make you feel like you're on a grand world spanning adventure.
FFVII part 3 will be kinda bringing it back and seeing the glimpse on how they handled it via tiny bronco it's got me super excited to explore the world via airship and betting the endgame will be the Golden Chocobo exploration.
We had a good concept in Final Fantasy XV but they still couldn't create true greatness with it.
Spoilers:
When you go to the other continent, you don't actually get to traverse it. It's totally understandable how unfinished the game was but that's precisely the reason why it needed at least another year or two in development. This is why I am particularly very excited for Dragon's Dogma 2 - we got the map in the first one and just about every corner of the exploration was unique.
@@nelieltu9730 I haven't played Rebirth because I still don't have it but I'm also excited to see how much of an open world they included. It would be staggering to see a real open world in Part 3 like we do in something like a Tales game or Helldivers 2, if you know what I mean by that one.
The gold standard for random battles is Bravely Default, which allows you to freely, at any time, adjust the encounter rate. Wanna grind? Crank it! Wanna re-tread a dungeon to check for missed treasure? Turn 'em off! I loved it. I wish all games would put that kind of control in my hands.
I pray they update this in a patch or with a rune? Nothing makes me stop playing a game more than a barrage of random battles to walk 10 feet
In Suikoden games, there was the Champion rune that disables enemy encounters, but only if you're level is higher than the enemies in the area, meaning you can still encounter enemies, but at a reduced rate and completely disables it once you become stronger than any enemy in that location. Maybe we could get a rune lens that functions more or less the same way here?
I gotta admit I didn't like BD much at all. Got over halfway through before giving it up. I liked the demo for Eiyuden a lot, though.
You had me at "explorable world maps" xD
Seriously though, everything about Eiyuden looks amazing, it breaks my heart that Murayama won't be with us to see everyone fall in love with the amazing game he and his team crafted
Suikoden is one of my top favorite series and hearing you sing its praises means this is the “sequel” I’ve been waiting for!
World map enthusiast here, and the minute you said that word I knew the game was going to be special! To me, world maps are what made the older RPG‘s feel so huge and it’s awesome that we get one here.
remember the overland map in FF8 where you could drive cars and stuff on the map and see trains going here and there?
@@johngumprecht Oh yeah, I love the ff8 map. To this day, even with the graphics we have the games just don’t feel big like they did on the PS1 when you’re walking around the world in FF8
and remember xenogears where you had to find an object on the world map that would then be in your inventory and it was a big deal object you had to have 3 of them or so to make something important but i dont remember what. I found out purely by chance. @@turnbasedtoddy7664
Murayama da goat. RIP to my favorite game creator. Just from my brief interaction with this game, I can tell it's going to be special.
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME IS PERFECT...including the blur effect and the intro
Been having a blast with Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and also absolutely excited for next month's Eiyuden Chronicle! I'm now at my 40's but I'm glad I still enjoy playing both modern and classic style JRPG's.
Same here buddy , loving it like I did back in 1997. Can't wait for this too.
Same here!
The first 4 minutes was all I needed and it looks like your battle party is 6 characters. I love this so much
Yeah that blur effect is irksome on my eyes as well. Thankfully you can turn that off.
I get they wanted to do it to make the sprite work stand out but it doesn't click for me
You can? He made it sound like it was not an option..
This is one of precious few games I have backed on Kickstarter that followed through. I am looking forward to it as a life-long Suikoden fan and it really relieves me to hear someone else who loves the series and knows what it should embody say that it does justice to its legacy. Thank you!
I’ll bet there will be a character in your base like Richmond from Suikoden 2 that tells you where the other recruitable members are and what they need to be recruited. That’s maybe why they didn’t add a notebook as it would be redundant.
Oh I do hope so!
@@davidvinc maybe it’s my Old school/Suikoden loving bias but I think that’s more immersive than pulling up a menu to check a notebook for clues!
@@Blueshellkyleyeah, it makes every npc in this game to have a meaning and a important job to do for you
@@Daniel-Unmeiten yeah I love that about Suikoden! It’s makes side questing and exploring really rewarding!
I backed it but am not doing the early access thing. Leaving that to others and I will just enjoy the shipped product.
The blur effect is called depth of field. It's actually very nice effects. But yes, it's not for everyone.
Man I can totally see the level of care that was put into this. And yes, that open world map is awesome
You scared me 😂 I backed it but haven't really been keeping up. Watching your video I thought it was out. I was like, "Oh no! Where's my copy!? Did I fill something out wrong."
I felt so much nostalgia when I played the beta! It was such good feeling! I'm so excited for full release! I backed the kickstarter as soon as it was announced, RIP Murayama. Thank you for bringing back my childhood!
Just wanted to let you know there’s a turn off blur option, called depth of field or something similar! Will probably help a lot with enjoyment haha
I am so excited for this game! Love “Suikoden”, especially “S1”, “S2”, and “S5”!!!!
How was Suikoden tactics? I never played that one.
My copy arrived today. I'm excited!
When I clicked on the video I wasn't expecting to see such a strong guy talking about RPG's! Nothing wrong with that but I got a little surprised. By the way david, it was such a great review you made here. I can't wait to see more of this game. Oh, you earned a new subscriber!
Welcome aboard and thanks so much!
This is the first world map I've seen in years for a new game and it looks incredible
Cant wait to explore this one. I do plan on pickup it up
You get it~ The Suikoden 2 parallels are so good.
I love that this has everything I loved in Suikoden 2
You can turn the blur off
great!! I was going to post that I agreed with David and that I also had to look away from this vid at times too. Awesome that you can turn it off! I can't wait for this game 😁
I’ll have to fool around in the settings because I looked for it and didn’t see anything, thanks for letting me know!
@@davidvinc I think it was field of view or something similar
I really want to experience this game as blind as I can, but I'm looking forward to revisiting this after I've played it.
Another stellar RPG game to add to this year's growing list!
When David drops his tone in a condescending manner I always audibly go, "Oh no." 😂😂
So the random encounter rate in the beta at least is bugged. If you play at more than 60fps it substantially drops the encounter rate.
That being said, this game looks like the perfect game. Aesthetically it looks beautiful, love the world map, and the random encounters. It makes me feel like I’m 15 years old again!
I can’t wait until April
I've had my eye on Eiyuden Chronicle for awhile now. Sounds like it's everything I wanted too. I'm old, so I like the old style RPG's haha thanks for the review!
It's so good!
So glad to have this coming out so soon now that the suikoden remasters are in limbo
This looks like a must buy for my switch 😊
@davidvinc Does disabling Depth of Field help with those scenes you mentioned?
I’m so hyped for this game, that I already preordered it as soon as this option was available. Retro style games are amazing, and a Suikoden successor is all that we need right now.
World maps, fuck yeah!! So glad I backed this on Kickstarter!
I am 100% looking forward to this game. The Suikoden series was my favorite during the PS1/PS2 RPG games
I’m patiently waiting for my pre-ordered Switch copy along with my physical copy of Sea of Stars. Next month is gonna be AMAZING!!!!!
I am extremely excited for this
April 23 can't come soon enough
I'm a retro guy myself but I don't mind a lil convenience here and there. Great review 👏 👌 👍
Thanks! 👍
Wow David! I had no idea this existed but omg am I excited. I imagine I’ll have the same reaction when I play it. Great vid.
Just discovered your channel! Excited for this this title. I love all the old Suikoden games...hell even 4 and 5! - Cheers!
Welcome aboard!
Going to have to play this one when it comes out on switch. Did you play the previous entry? Is that worth checking out in the meantime?
I love your page. Finally good to find someone my age who loves these types of rpgs on the switch
Fantastic game so far! Only big critique from me is I wish there were footstep sounds as you move around. It would make your main character feel more a part of the world as opposed to a 2D sprite put on a 3D background. Maybe some dust and dirt could sprout around his feet as he runs on sand and stuff too. Would just add to the immersion. Even grandia on ps1 had little footstep sounds. It helps I think :) Lastly maybe some more life in the overworld map would be cool, Little animals, birds flying around, trees swaying in wind etc. Heres hoping!
i am gonna get this game on switch for both myself and my sister. The combination of turn based combat melded with the awesome world map has totally sold me
David! I love your energy and enthusiasm so much!!!! It's contagious!
Definitely excited for this one! Hopefully I love it!
Still finishing up rebirth, and later today this instant classic will be delivered....I should have taken another week off from work!
This had been on my radar ever since it was first announced. You just sealed the deal for me.
Can't wait for this game. Suikoden 2 was my first RPG and I'm gonna be playing the crud out of this 😁
At least it's a beta, although pretty shortly before launch beta, so they can certainly fix some of your negatives. They certainly should be able to add a skip/fast forward to skills. But they COULD have just invited David to the studio and have him point out these issues earlier in the process and have it worked out by now 😁
Great feedback and still going to play this on April for the early access!
i hope it comes in time for my sisters birthday
Game looks fantastic! Very old school 😊 will definitely be adding this to my wishlist 👍🤗
Didn’t know about this game. You got me hooked at world map. Loving the graphics but agree the blur looks like a distraction. Looking forward to your follow up on this in the future.
Hi David, I think you can mitigate some of the blur effect by turning off "depth of field" in the options (if you didn't already)! I don't think it completely solves the issue, but it seemed to help me. I also developed headaches looking at the blurring effect, so it definitely isn't a you problem.
People are reviewing this already!? This is great news I can’t waiiiiit to play this!! I’m so happy to hear this, as someone who loved playing ff7 growing up, and not being able to play the remakes because I got an Xbox, I had been feeling pretty down lately, but I still get to play basically another suikoden so I’m extremely happy! Thanks for the review, I’m definitely subbing. I love world maps too! I was happy when I played the remake of tales of vesperia and saw a nice world map. And of course the star ocean 2 remake
I preordered the cart.. My mind is blown how studios keep putting out gem after gem after gem.. If this isn’t another golden age idk what is
Thank you for sharing ❤!! Love love this series.
The boar quest was so odd... When I did it, I got it in four minutes, but later I only encountered the boars at about 5 percent for some reason.
Is this the beta or full game?
I backed it too (first Kickstarter I ever did). Haven't gotten to start it yet tho
playing through game pass.
Suikoden always had these other battle modes that never sat right with me; 1v1 duels, ship battles, army RTS etc. Its great having other modes of combat so gameplay doesnt get stale, I get the appeal at least.
League of nation? That sound like kingdom of obel, or island liberation. I cant wait ❤
This honestly looks better by the day and I’m so glad I supported this title on Kickstarter. Really the biggest problem for me at this point is deciding on which platform I should redeem it on, between Switch, Steam and GOG.
Yeah… they must add a speed up battle option in an update. TB RPGs need that these days especially when battle is what we’ll be doing alot of.
As far as the blur you described, it’s their attempt to model the shallow depth of field (DOF) you get on a camera when you open up the aperture especially wide. The terms you used were fine - even when I’m shooting music videos for clients we talk about how out of focus (OOF) we want particular elements or if we want everything to be pretty sharp.
In real photography, shallow depth of field is one of those effects that can be really immersive (like at various points in Barry Jenkins films like “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk”) but the example sequence you showed seemed to be overusing it and that can get distracting.
Games in the past have had a mixed record when using depth of field effects. I thought by the time we got to Blue Dragon in 2006, that they were already showing they could make it look a bit closer to the real camera effect but somehow you had at least one of the Yakuza games on the PS3 (either 4 or 5, I can’t remember) coming out years later and looking extremely distracting and much less natural when trying to use the same effect. Thankfully in the Yakuza games they fixed it with the next entry.
A lot of games these days allow you to enable/disable a lot of post-processing effects (motion blur, depth of field, bloom, film grain emulation, etc.) especially on PC so it would be worth letting the developer know that you’d like the option to disable this in the settings menu. While I might leave it on myself, I guarantee you aren’t the only one that had that issue, so it would be good for them to give the option as an accessibility consideration.
Really excited for this game, Persona 3 Reload, then Unicorn Overlord, then Dragons Dogma 2, then Eiyuden; this months are crazy!
The only thing that worries me is how it will perform in Switch, since I would love to buy it there (Unicorn Overlord is amazing in the Switch).
Looks like another fun jrpg. I’ll pick this up once I’ve cleared some of my backlog. Hopefully they add some quality of life improvements
You've definitely given me some goals regarding my gyming, David. Great video, you've got a new subscriber in me!
Welcome aboard!
This is my most anticipated game of this year, next to Rebirth
One of the kindest UA-camrs I know
Clicked on this video for the Eiyuden Chronicle review, did not expect ripped retro nerd doing the review. 10/10
looking forward to this game, love 2D assets! Also, your tank looks so good on ya!
I'm excited to play this game!
I want this so bad, i didnt know. Thanks sooo much for this video, its on my "day 1 must buy" list now
Suikoden is my fave series of all ten. I was ten when the first one came out and got them all when they were new from 2 onward. I have definitely been looking forward to the eiyuden a long time! Thank you for the review. Admittedly in the beginning I was distracted by your muscles haha
as soon as I saw the world map in this game, there may or may not have been an "oooh David" out loud somewhere in NYC lol
ANY IDEA IF THERE IS GOING TO BE A CASTLE OR TOWN YOU BUILD? THAT WAS ALWAYS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS IN SUIKODEN SERIES
Thanks so much for sharing this review. I had more then one gamergasm from the suikoden vibes.
Hey David, thank you for your first impressions, love your honesty. I guess the negative points were the not so fast battles, unskipable attacks/special attacks, random encounters(been not so random), background blur and not so good opening scene. I guess that those points can be fixed before final release. I do not know if they released now for beta testers or is this the final product. Anyway, i'm excited to play this gorgeous game.
I dont know if the minimap vs tracker comment was in reference to Rebirth or not. But just in case: in Rebirth you can change the tracker to a minimap in options!
Yeah I did that immediately! Lol
David, you have my two favourite things since Suikoden 1 and 2.
Wow - those pecs.
I tried to back but my bank wouldn't let me make the payment overseas. Almost made me switch banks.
This will be my game of the year no doubt. It's great to see what backers on fb and fb messenger chat are saying. I'm also glad they aren't holding back like yourself on the negatives. Although, there really doesn't seem to be many.
I am curious as I've seen different take like that difficultly is adjustable and random counters adjust based on your level, so I'm not sure which way it is. It's a Beta so maybe they are just testing this and will add these features at release.
Definitely looking to pick this up after i get pretty far in unicorn overlord.
Great first impressions, very excited for the game and I hope they see your feedback!
Thanks, David for yet another game I'll check out! I am a huge RPG gamer and retro fan as I grew up with the NES/SNES!
I miss my world maps in video games! I hate the lazy point and click maps that new games do! Give me a world map to explore it maybe old school but it works wonderfully! Also I might wait on this to go on sale as I already purchased more then a few games this month but I will definitely get this game in the future.
I think my feelings are pretty similar to yours, mostly glad that it is a very retro game that is staying true to the roots of Suikoden. I'll admit I was hoping that they would perhaps modernize the battle system just a bit more than they did. I worry that this game isn't going to be getting very good reviews or any potential sequels due to how niche and old school it feels. Ultimately though I'm just glad it exists at all and I'm really looking forward to exploring this world and finding all the secrets it holds!
I hear from some people that played the beta saying the bgm is same for lot of city and dunjeons.. its true ? I am backer but i wait until release
Fantastic review, I'll be picking up a physical copy for Switch when it comes out!
It really is awesome. I had to stop after 6 hours in the beta because I want to have as much of a surprise as I can get. I played enough to see what i wanted to see. I loved Unicorn Overlord but Eiyuden may be my early GOTY based on my initial impression. Between that, UO, FF7R (which I don't care for but that's just me), Persona 3R, RE:Metaphore, Suikoden Gate wars, god knows what else is coming out, it's a good year so far for RPG fans.
One thing I’m super thankful for is difficulty options! Suikoden 2 is my favorite jrpg but there was only maybe 1-3 tough fights. I’m so hyped for this game! Do you know if there’s an end game/post game at all like extra dungeons or a NG+?
@@Butterfly617 sweet! Any word on post game or end game content?
Its will have New game plus and difficulty Inlock and also the possibility to add more handicaps for more difficulty.
@@vincere_valens stronger enemies ala dq11 would be epic
Everything about this game is amazing 😊😊😊😊😊
I Kickstarted this game because I loved the Suikoden franchise immensely. I even based my first d&d campaign off of 2. I appreciate your love for this new game
However, the studio did ask that people don't spoil things about it until at least launch, so I'm disappointed to see their wishes ignored by this, with the footage and story synopsis.
I can't tell you how excited I am for this game, but you're giving away too much, too soon...
Wow, so many content creators just ignores the fact that Rabbit and Bear asked specifically not to share videos like these. Also including story elements was not tasteful either.
How did so many content cretaors miss their request? Ill admit it was late, but out of reapect from the developers you guys need to start checking these things.
They wanted the beta footage and story cutscenes and gameplay to not be too much and too spoiler filled. But maybe im just tripping. Either way, yall gotta start checking on uo developers wishes before you start posting
Was having a world map part of the kickstarter?
I saw the battles on the slower side and the animations being repetitive is also one thing i pointed out.Hopefully we get a patch that has the option to speed them up and also a in game item that gives more random encounter for specific quest to be done more easily.
if you're playing on pc you can use Cheat Engine's speedhack and toggle it via some unused button on your controller (I used this for many games like the pixel remasters, Grandia, Saga Frontier, Star Ocean 2...) but yeah it would be nice if they added this feature before release.
Hell yeah Suikoden is one of my favorite series. Just finished Rebirth and looking forward to exploring the world once we get the airship! Now Eiyuden awaits me. Dragons Dogma 2 and Rebirth hard will keep me busy till this releases.
