It's funny to think back about how pioneering Fear Factory were in mixing clean and harsh vocals, as well as the double kick work. The album this was on, "Demanufacture", was so influential.
Way ahead of the curve. A groundbreaking band.
What? FF didn't pioneer mixing clean and harsh vocals? My Dying Bride was already doing that (at least on earlier albums) and that's ignoring things like melodic death metal bands who were mixing clean vocals and harsh death vocals. Also the double kick is straight from the death metal genre, nothing to do with FF...
Fear Factory started as a death metal band, and changed their sound on this "Demanufacture" album drastically. They were still doing the clean vocals, but before this style in the video they reacted to, Burton C. Bell sounded much more in the vein of Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, and Suffocation. They were founded in 1989, one year before My Dying Bride. They absolutely were the pioneers of this sound. I would know, because I'm an old bastard that's been listening to death metal, thrash, grindcore, and doom since the 1980's. MDB was probably the European's influence into this sound, because they heard them before FF would have blown up, which wasn't for a few more years.
This is what early FF sounded like. This song was written in 1989, and finally released in 1992 after they were signed by Roadrunner. ua-cam.com/video/ydIkzH3pzeA/v-deo.html
@@tryptamind6839 fear factory and my dying bride started out in the same year
YESS! Finally Fear Factory! they don't get enough credit....I recommend Final exit with them
Or Dielectric, Powershifter, Fear Campaign and the whole Obsolete album. ;P :D \m/
Bro it’s rare for fear factory NOT to release a banger. You could dedicate a whole ass channel to reactions of fear factory song. Their THAT GOOD
Final Exit is such a great song, it will be my funeral song
I second that. Fear factory is severely underrated
This album always made me happy. I love the terminator theme of it.
Yes!
I'll write it again then: crazy that Fear Factory are now considered underground when they were one of the biggest and most groundbreaking bands of the 1990s, and still are to some degree. Spawned a whole genre. This song is old, and still sounds better than most of the stuff we hear today. Baffles me. Also, they created the mixing of clean vocals with harsh ones. Never happened before. Unfortunately, it also gave birth to a shitload of horrible nu metal bands.
But yeah, without FF, no Slipknot, no Meshuggah, no Static-X, no djent, no metalcore, no countless horrible bands :/ Yet Fear Factory, and this album in particular, are in my top 10 ever.
I'm sorry, but no. Meshuggah has almost nothing in common with FF. They sound similar only on the surface level. FF's debut studio album is 'Soul of A New Machine' and it's mostly a mix of industrial metal like Godflesh and some early death metal. Also, just in case, 'Demanufacture' came out one month after 'Destroy Erase Improve'. Meshuggah is heavily rooted in thrash metal sound and some progressive metal (also jazz fusion, listen closely to that oddball Holdsworth-y solo right in the middle of the motherfucking Future Breed Machine). Listen to 'Humiliative' from their 'None' EP (1994) - yeah, it's more thrashy and conventional compared to DEI, but it's already sounds like Meshuggah, so there's no need for that extremely far-fetched Fear Factory influence.
Their sound is aesthetiacally is quite different too. FF's guitar tone is more growly and gritty and they are much, much more straightforward rhythmically, while Meshuggah's guitar tone is harsher and more abrasive. FF are all about being 'dark, gritty and brutal' (with lyrics that explicitly deal with societal problems). Meshuggas are also brutal, ofc they are, but they also portray creepy, very unsettling atmosphere and extreme levels of insanity just with their sound. FF's straightforward rebellous sound aesthetic has nothing to do with fucked up shit like 'Elastic' or confusion, fear and madness of 'Catch Thirtythree'.
If anything, both band have been taking notes from groove metal bands like Panthera and Sepultura - that's where their similarities come from.
@Alex Under: I understand where you come from. However, Meshuggah themselves have admitted having been heavily influenced by Demanufacture, by the machine gun drumming and Dino's palm muting especially (he pretty much invented it). Which doesn't mean that both bands are identical or anything. Just that their sound comes from somewhere...
Demanufacture and Obsolete are absolute gold.
You can say their work from demanfacture on is all somewhat similar, but none of it is bad, some are better then other, none are bad, they're resoanably consistent in style, maybe a bit much sometimes, but, like i said, none of it is bad.
IMHO.
I mean, 'underground' is a relative thing, but yeah I don't know how mainstream you have to be to consider Fear Factory underground. They could have at least used something like one of the remixes from Fear is the Mindkiller if they were calling them underground.
Re-reading what I've just typed, I think I might be 'that guy' now. Bad times. :(
Jesus christ, calm down. FF isn't responsible for any of that shit.
Meshuggah already existed before FF, and Djent is credited to Meshuggah with "Aztec Two Step" from their None EP being considered the first Djent song.
FF is nowhere near the first band to mix clean and harsh vocals. My Dying Bride was already doing it (at least on earlier albums) before FF and that's ignoring all the melodic death metal bands who mixed clean vocals with harsh death vocals.
Also it's not weird at all for FF to be underground. Underground is just a catch-all term to describe any band/artist who isn't mainstream. FF was never mainstream thus they are usually considered underground, and no they didn't spawn any new genre of metal...
Best album of industrial metal ever released (in my opinion, of course). I was listening yesterday.
Dino Casares was a monster creating the sound of guitars for this album. The groove of drums is beyond reality.
My favorite song from this album (demanufacture) is Dog Day Sunrise.
I agree wholeheartedly!
I agree with everything, except Dog Day Sunrise is my least favorite song!
Mechanize?
Guilherme Lacerda I prefer Obsolete personally !
I really like this album but I'm not sure it's "industrial" enough to be the best in that category. I'd say Ministry's The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste would be closer to that.
A bias resistor is a resistor that sets up a bias (a certain operating voltage) for a point in a circuit. Self Bias Resistor is a play on words that means resist your biases and be open-minded. You could even say that it is talking about your metaphorical bias resistor in your mind, that is, a resistor that controls your amount of bias (predetermined thoughts about people) much like an actual resistor in an electronic circuit controls its amount of bias (a certain operating voltage).
Carcass - Heartwork
Yes, this! An absolute classic.
Cosmic Sea Yes!!!
So much want! I love embodiment also
Blood spattered banner would be great to see them react to.
Yes! Finally some Fear Factory, they're an amazing band. The Obsolete album has got a great concept
Yes thanks bro for the remastered version..best channel ever.
I had the pleasure and pain of seeing FF, Biohazard, and Slayer on the same ticket in NYC back in the 90's
I love this album. Favorite Fear Factory by far. Please, for the love of God, give Riverside a listen.
That was the most intelligent discussion of a metal song. I am now subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work.
Time to rewatch. Thank you for the updated video!
Also, I remember a very old interview with FF, in which Burton (vocals) went into detail about how 1984 by George Orwell was a huge influence and part of making this album.
do Piss Christ or Zero Signal from FF
Come for the "HK-(Hunter-Killer)" stay for the "Pisschrist"
\m/ \m/
I first saw FF in Montreal as they opened for Ozzy in 1995. At the time they were a fairly new band and nobody knew what to expect. They blew everyone away. People were like, wow. Who the fuck is this?? The next day I went out and bought their two cds they had. Great band. Excellent review guys. Even though we don't agree on the fundamentals of belief in a supreme being /God, I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent here. You both have a way to entertain all the way through and make the time spent feel valuable. Thank you, keep up the good work.
I saw them in NYC, same, opened for Ozzy and I bought next day. Unbelievable
Very cool of ya'll to re-release this after seeing the feedback the previous version got. Respect!
The video was full screen so you couldn't see their reactions as the song was playing.
Thank you for posting this video
this was great! as much as i love fear factory, your commentary was amazing, and just putting it out there! you go you two! kudos! this video was so worth it. hahahaha
Great song choice!! One of the best albums of 1995.
Septic flesh - Portrait of a headless man
... or Martyr
A definite need
Fear Factory are an absolutely great Industrial Metal band!
Their best albums:
Soul Of A New Machine, Demanufacture and Remanufacture
Obsolete is also an epic album.. For sure!!
Lexius Nez Archetype is also pretty good
Mechanize is one of my favorites. I liked Remanufacture back in the day but not so much anymore.
Bathory - Oden's Ride Over Nordland/A Fine Day to Die
(important to pick a video that does include the intro "Oden's Ride Over Nordland"!)
I asked and you delivered. Vin, you are a man of your word.
Such a great album and amazing song you chose to react and review. Fear Factory's musicianship and lyrics are incredible. I recommend the whole "Obsolete" album. Amazing video Vin and Sori. 😊
I love this album! Nice pick you guys!
Whoa. Day from HADES. I totally get it. Look at my last name! :P
Fear Factory- Edgecrusher
Pleeeeaasseee
Hunter-killer, shock or cars too!
Ah man... hope things pick up for you guys soon. I have had enough of those days to know it is good you have each other, and the rest of the family off course :p
As I said before Burton C Bell one of the greatest vocals of all times and performer too I went to see them live 2013!. They sound like the album look for REPLICA LIVE!. Peace ✌️ thanks for rafting to them!.
It's criminal how overlooked they are.
Love this song!
Hell Yeah! Fear Factory gotta love it the song of my life:)cool reaction guys! cheers from Poland:)
Thank you for doing some jams from one of metals best albums ever!
Allegaeon: Proponent for sentience III is the best follow up for Fear Factory. You'll understand when you do. Are you readyyyy?
Great that I see fear factory music reactions...
This song is sooo good!!
Clutch! The Face.
Any CLUTCH song is amazing. I would recommend *Binge & Purge*
I’ve been going to fear factory shows for decades, back in the late 80’s I’m pretty sure ! I love fear factory !
Hahaha you guys are cool! Sori you seem to be holding up. Vin I think is more feeling the song like rrrrrrrrr. The sound is probly how you guys are feeling right now. Dang! I remember when this sing came out. Cool cool.
What if Self Bias Resistor means resisting the impulse to favour oneself exclusively, to resist what you have become under whatever external system has conditioned you from birth.
It is not just a fight against a external construct of control, it is more importantly a fight against oneself. To fight the bias of abject selfishness crafted by the "machines of hate".
Riverside - Second life syndrome
Great choice of song
Wow, Fear Factory ! So amazing
I love the title of this song because when it first came out I was 17 and reading a book about electric wiring fundamentals and it was there that I first heard about self biased resistors. The music resonated with me on an emotional level, but mentally I found the word play amusing.
Nice, Fear Factory one of my favourites, Great choice too! Rock ya later
Enchilada. Love you guys 💜
Zero Signal from same Album Manufactured. ..great album death industrial
Listen to the whole Demanufacture album and then listen to like every metal band post 1995
Lesson learned!
Finally. Yes sir Fear Factory
Until today one of the best Songs EVER!!!!
I started listening to Fear Factory after playing the first Carmaggedon game. 4 songs off of Demanufacture was on the soundtrack. This song Body Hammer, Demanufacture and Zero Signal.
Fear Factory \m/ \m/
"Pisschrist" (live at Worcester version is pretty epic) next, please
Ya won't be disappointed
Great version i was at that show
Cool, you remastered it so we can see you react to it. Fear Factory - Fear Campaign please. Also, just a question I have always wondered. When you find a band with songs that you really like, such as Slipknot. How you you keep from listening to more of their songs while waiting a few months for another review from them? Do you ever cheat, and listen to more songs?
No we don’t listen to more. But we’ve done 400+ songs so there’s more to choose from now. But before it was hard !!
Dino has admitted to being influenced by the super heavy part in one by Metallica - i think he said it on Jamey Jasta's podcast if I remember right.....basically he wanted the band to have rhythm guitars akin to that section of the song
Makes sense
\m/ Damn good memories of this song. :) Another FF song I recommend is "Powershifter" from the Mechanize album.
Combichrist "Sent to Destroy" "From My Cold Dead Hands" (Maybe too electronic for this channel)
The Electric Hellfire Club "I Dream of Demons"
Old Man's Child "Phantoms of Mortem Tales
Cradle of Filth "The Rape and Ruin of Angels (Hosannas in Extremis)"
Wolfpack 44 "The Black March"
You guys are picking out so many songs I was listening to in high school. Sometimes then we didn't really understand the message of the lyrics. They make so much sense now considering the times we live in. Especially this song. It means to not give in to any brainwashing from anything, religions, trends, etc. Just be yourselves.
YAAAAY! THANK YOU! \,,/
Good luck
Check out Windir - Journey to the End, Ending, or Arntoer Ein Windir
This song is the shit . One of my favorite songs from the 90s metal ohhh the good old days of metal .
I feel like I'm sitting in the front room of a friends house, witnessing a domestic argument and wanting to quietly slip out unnoticed!
I remember this and replica being the best songs on the album, they should all just make up and have a reunion I'm sure road runner records would pay them top dollar for a comeback
A Day to Remember- The Document Speaks for Itself
Bathory......
Gojira - Where dragons dwell Hellfest 2013
I absolutely love how you two have just listened to a song about conformity -- tinged with transhumanism and post-industrial angst -- when you immediately start to debate about how to discipline the kids and why your child is having behavior issues. So much this.
Fear factory - timelessness. Is an amazing clean vocal song from fear factory and also their other song enhanced reality. For the timelessness video the best one that fits it is the one with saving private Ryan footage
My father was an alcoholic. And a Christian. And a boxer. He used physical disapline to the extreme. I went completely against everything he stood for. And we ultimately left and didn't talk for years after I finally pummeled him to a pulp. But he had been fist fighting me my entire life. I don't use physical disapline. But my kids are well behaved. But I don't drink, so I disapline them, but with love. Luckily me and my father reconciled once he got cancer. It's a shame it took that.
150: Epica - Consign to Oblivion (live at the Zenith)
Yes....Some FearFactory 😊🤘
Fear Factory
Fear factory? Awesome! Now we need some ministry, some godflesh and some pitchshifter
So God of cause thought it was time to test you again^^. Well back to seriousness, I would suggest you look into having a Linux computer instead. Would most certainly give you less headaches.
Also what's your thoughts on Versailles - Faith and decision?
Lift a house with this👊🏼
Well vin your shape up looks good if that helps
One of my favorite concerts. Saw them open for Iron Maiden.
It's crazy how 25 years old song sounds so modern
Opeth - hessian peel
Porcupinde tree - arriving somewhere but not here
Haken - the endless knot
Oh, i have worked with Fear Factory on "Demanufacture" tour in 1995.
Being a fan of Metal and also being a fan of Cyber Punk (such as Yoko Kanno, Thomas Dolby, etc...) I have always had an appreciation for Fear Factory.
Cannibal Corpse reaction!!!!!!!!!
Indeed
Omg, i freaked when I saw FF.
Then I saw the song... fuck yeah!!
Please do any of these:
Pisschrist, Zero Signal, Invisible Wounds, Securitron
when it rains it pours
You should totally check out the title track of that album DEMANUFACTURE!!!
Yes when Fear Factory was at their best!
Wish back when this album was released, the internet, UA-cam and reaction videos already existed.
What FF created in their early days was absolutely incredible and influential for just about every metal band moving forward, even those that were well established.
Everyone in the industry heard this album & shit their pants.
20 seconds after the song finished i have no idea how the convo got there
i love your videos...kinda addicted. guilty pleasure for sure (which is a bit of praise and an insult to us both) i applaud you for being open minded enough to expose yourself to what you have (when i was coming up...no chance...super evil music, lyrics be damned) but wonder why you stop there...granted, these don't happen over night (i metaphorically crawled, on my knees, through broken glass for 15 years, before i got passed all religion and other 'woo'-so there's always hope) i don't always agree with your assessments of stuff, but i do dig that you are honest about whatever your opiniion is ( and unapologetc about it). keep on :)
5:29 *Aghhh!* In 2018, my neck can't take this 20-second killer headbang part like in 1995! ;)
I pray for u guys to get back on track
Deftones - Be Quiet And Drive
Really underrated band. Demanufacture and Obsolete are classics
Cmon guys give Xasthur a review...lol...great job you two do!
Sorry about all the stress guys.
No one can resist the riff at 5:29. You have to headbang. There's no way around it xD
Nice! Try SCAR Symmetry- The ILLUSIONIST
Burton C. Bell is a very underrated vocalist! Fucking LOVE FEAR FACTORY!!! Check out Shock, Obsolete, Edgecrusher.
Finally someone does a Fear Factory review! This band never receives the credit they are due.Thank you for this!
Fear factor 1.Hunter killer 2.judgement 3.zero signal
It's interesting to note that Fear Factory and Devo share a lot in terms of concept/concepts.
Fear Factory edgecrusher or shock!!!!!
