George AFB, a Superfund site, was one of the most contaminated military bases in the US from 1941 to 1992. Over 100,000 people, including 20,000 residents and 80,000 workers, were exposed to hazardous materials, leading to health problems.
The Air Force and DoD were aware of the contamination but failed to address or inform those at risk.
This negligence resulted in severe health issues, including congenital disabilities and childhood cancers.
The Air Force's lack of acknowledgment and fraudulent record-keeping has led to the denial of medical care and compensation for affected veterans.
The redevelopment of the base continues to endanger a new generation as the contamination remains undisclosed and unremediated.
The base also hosted the F-117 Nighthawk, the first operational stealth aircraft in the U.S. Air Force. The F-117 played a crucial role in various military operations, including the Gulf War.
During the Cold War, George AFB was involved in defending the United States against potential threats, especially from the Soviet Union. It played a significant role in maintaining national security during this period.
George AFB hosted various fighter squadrons and played a key role in the training and operations of fighter aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom and the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
There are unlimited spots to fly FPV.
Unfortunately, it is restricted!

Yes! Unfortunately, It is off limits. There is however some buildings next to the base.

Thanks Mike! Yeah...unfortunate site and story of the military. What we need to do is take care of the the decedents and the affected. If only we spent our tax money on veterans the way we should. Forgotten... But nonetheless, a new flying spot!

We live in a different world now. They didn't have transparency, accountability, and responsibility those days. Admitting negligence or responsibility can open the door to legal action.
Someone who was born in the base in 1979 can't even get a copy of his birth certificate from the state of California.
The cover up is vast.

Too bad this is too far away from me, otherwise it would be a perfect place for me to fly.
It is still contaminated I believe. Besides, it is a restricted area.

I think the biggest crime is that taxpayers paid tons of money for construction of a new, state of the art hospital on base (where I was stationed and worked in the emergency department for five years) only to have it abandoned. The videos of that hospital today is gut-wrenching.

@@RCEscape that's just insane!!! That has to be millions of dollars of homes empty. Why didn't they just sell or give to homeless. Just seems extremely wasteful to someone who cares like I do.
Once a beautiful base. Was stationed there 1987-1988. Lived at 329 Washington St. Actually spotted the 2-Story where we lived on this video. The beauty of what once was lives only in my mind now.

You know there is an abandoned base there in Texas? Matagorda Island Air Force Base is a closed military airfield on the north end of Matagorda Island, northeast of Corpus Christi, Texas

@@RCEscape I forgot how much I enjoyed.. why stolen.. just took awhile to rebuild.. soldering again!! Perhaps I make a video? Got me an RV too. Lol but I'm full timing it. OMG the story's.. told you on my way.. staying around here for winter. If it could happen.. will happen to me first oil change.. they came back and said you need a new transmission.. 7k!! But worked out with dealership.. new one be here soon. Was just past warranty.. 200 miles! Toyata backed there truck however.. so just Time. And I needed it. Moving every few day's sucks.
