George AFB was closed in the 90’s as part of the reduction in force under Clinton. The air field is still active for repair and testing of aircraft and many companies have warehouses such as Rubbermaid. There’s even an open charter school in the old junior high school. It’s not just the super site designation that caused the housing abandonment, military base housing is notorious for being sub-standard. (AF brat and AF wife, I speak from experience.). The same thing happened at Norton. It was cheaper and safer to bulldoze it. I wish they would do that at George. Breaks my heart. I shopped at the commissary and my son was treated for his broken leg there. Southern California was hit hard in the 90’s. 3 bases within a 100 mile of each other, were closed or switched to a reserve base. It devastated the Inland Empire.
I was stationed at the hospital emergency department in the late eighties. It's sad you say to explore safely, not break stuff and vandalize. My hospital was state of the art and beautiful when the base closed. Not any more.
I used to live not to far from there and we used to go paintball shooting there and of course we got stopped by the security but all you have to do is just talk to them and they’ll let you slide as long as you don’t destroy anything or shoot live ammunition on the base. Also at night is when the fun happens because you hear a lot of weird noises especially in the big building by the gym.

My uncle was stationed here in the ‘80’s. It was a cool place to visit. So sad to see it like this.

It may have been substandard but they would have been better than tents.
