United Airlines gives away toddler's seat, forces mom to carry him during flight

- Shirley Yamauchi claims United Airlines gave away the seat she purchased for her 2-year-old son to a standby customer, and forced Yamauchi to carry her son on her lap during a flight to Boston.
How many apologies does it take before bankruptcy?
Citizen23 600 million and the death of 50 million more pets and 20 million passengers
Sadly there's about a 4 company monopoly on these airlines... u. Either take united / south west /west jet / delta or u pony up for the more expensive flights which cost way more so people have no choice and yet why they don't give a damn

Lets just hijack the plane already
Good luck with that, everyone knows that if you are Asian, the chances of you getting bumped is greater then if you were a white passenger
For me an apology, it's not enough!
Remind me to NEVER fly with United Airlines.
Karasu The Dreamer
Never fly with United Airlines
Karasu The Dreamer fine, they will still be in business
They will if they can keep robbing people of their seats.
whocare9999 united isn't racist so you can stop saying that. You're such a dumbass
whocare9999 my name says Delta Airlines One NOT United Airlines One. I worked for Delta as a gate agent and now I'm a pilot.
United Airlines: Yeah, sorry about that. It won't happen again....oh you were expecting compensation for the seat that was not given to you? WE ALREADY SAID WE WERE SORRY. NOW BUGGER OFF. **counts stacks of money**

@@gentlemanjonathan3115 No refund. Lawsuit!!!!!
@@butwhy8976 why not american
she paid 900 dollars for a seat and the best they can do is say "sorry". I would sue soo damn hard
Mr. Tactical sue and lose
Delta Airlines and how would you lose? As long as you paid for it you will win!
Mr. Tactical, yeah I noticed there was no mention of a refund. Nine hundred dollars down the drain!
Mr. Tactical sue for either free 1st class lifetime or for 40 million dollars
Diddz' Then they would lose
If that were my child i would have not have let them sit on my lap and i would have insisted that they sit in the seat i payed for. Causing a scene is worth if it means your child is safe during a flight
Yeah, these days causing a scene gets police called and you escorted off the plane.
Peps Haven - true, but imagine the publicity: "United throws a mother and a child off the airline because the mother refuses to put her child in an unsafe situation."
That’s because you’re white. If a non white person caused a scene. They would have been pistol whipped and dragged off the plane.
Tam Tam - you have a point about many recent cases, but as far as airlines are concerned, white people were dragged off planes too. In some cases, it was their fault, but there were a few cases where it wasn't. There was a case when a woman was asked to leave a plane because her toddler said "bye bye plane" and waved to another plane from the window. The toddler was simply saying good bye to a departing plane, but the flight attendant got all nervous, demanded the mother sedates the child, but the mother refused. Then, there was this case: www.foxnews.com/travel/2017/11/16/woman-claims-american-airlines-ignored-safety-rules-forced-her-child-to-fly-on-her-lap.html In this case, their policy is to allow one car seat, but not two, so what exactly is a woman with two kids supposed to do?
As a black male I know that the police would have been called immediately, if I kicked up a fuss. I think the best thing that people can do, is to make sure their phones are switched on, record the whole incident, post it online, tweet like crazy and then take them to court.
These united employees lack common sense. OF COURSE it is not safe to have a child in someone's lap, and of course you should not prioritize a standby costumer over a paying one. Common sense, people!
stanleycoleman this is way beyond common sense. This is business 101. And they can't even get it right. She paid for the seats but they stole that paid seat to get extra money from waiting customer. I call that robbing 101 ethic 000. Is united airlines that cheap that people just can't avoid it. It must be damn good that it can get away with every misconduct.
they are taught to make it up as they go, the airline does not care
Stand by passengers pay for their tickets. why would you think they fly free?
If they hit some turbulence and the kid went flying straight up against the plane's roof he could get paralyzed or killed.
@@hooleyqueen not necessarily. A lot of airline employees fly standby for free, which is the reason why they did this.
Well, maybe you incorrectly gave the seat to a standby customer. ONCE YOU REALIZED IT WAS A MISTAKE, GIVE THE SEAT BACK TO THE PERSON WHO PAID FOR IT!!! It's not rocket science. The nice thing is, though, this lady will probably get a lot of money from her lawsuit.
why are people still flying united? are they cheaper or what?
Miagy 5 he's right, airlines work together global and even in regionals, sky team, one world, star alliance, and airlines like compass that have regionals jets used by airlines
Same Question! Why are people still flying this fucking flight! Boycott it !!!!!
teamometeamo flight? Lol, it's an airline. Not a flight. Because they are still one of the greatest airlines in history along with delta and American
They monopoly, many lines are occupied with only united airline, ever since they bought many airlines under their company, they are one of biggest airline company in the world. It's monopoly, they rule the game.
Zizhen Tong, other than that, Delta (Parters with compass) Alaska (Alaska Horizon and Virgin America) and partners with compass airlines, American (American Eagle), United (United Express), Southwest. These airlines are partnered where they send cancelled or delayed passengers to, also sighted contracts where they promise to not try to run each out of business like pan am and twa. This also doesn't say all the backgrounds and all the global partners through, SkyTeam, Oneworld, and Star Alliance. Ps Alaska and Delta is partners with Virgin
Literally no one is talking about how cute the toddler is?💓
I think that at 27 months you can start using years rather than months 🙄
Laura Christine I'm thinking they said it in months to emphasize that he is over two years old (over 24 months) and thus should be sitting in his own seat.
Vanessa Mendoza could've just said 2 years and 3 months. I'm sure people would know he's over two!😂
27 months is quicker to say...lol

Can we talk about how FRICKIN ADORABLE THIS CHILD IS?
United Airlines needs to get their shit together.
When you own more than half the company than you make the decisions
Seems like either driving or taking a train is far better than suffering through the TSA or some bullshit from some airplane company.
It is. But...she was going from Hawaii to the mainland of US. Kinda hard to drive or take a train....
I can't drive trains, weird choice to give us, I think driving a car would be better.
The only reason we can’t go by train is it hasn’t been figured out yet. Over in Europe you can go under the English Channel from England to France
I suspect that their 'mis-scanning' explanation is complete bullshit. Likely one of the gate staff noticed that there was a child travelling with his mother that could be 'bumped' internally. I would like to have seen their scanning records as part of a settlement.
Stop overbooking your flights United, problem solved.
What a load of crock. The kid's ticket did not scan properly? Strange how it was the kid's ticket, not anyone else on the plane. I am tipping someone deliberately gave the kid's seat away and just expected the mother to grin and bear it. I hope this lady was re-reimbursed for the price of his seat. Just an apology is not good enough. That child was un-restrained for the entire trip, and could have been severely injured had they hit turbulence. Disgraceful.
No it's normal for United airlines
If she bought the ticket they shouldn't be able to take the seat period
Ha she stood up to them, they would have unceremoniously dragged her ass off the plane as they did with the Asian doctor.
8/12/19.....MOM would be soooo rich if she had REFUSED to hold her 27 mon old son....Of course United would have called airport security + police but AFTER BEING DRAGGED OFF THE PLANE WITH HER LITTLR BOY, SHE & HER LAWYER WOULD OWN THAT AIRLINE!
@James Stewart I agree. She should have gotten off the plane instead of risking that happening. Arguing with them would be useless. I had something similar happen to me and there was no way that the seat I was promised next to the isle because of health reasons was given me as promised. The SOB who took my seat knew I was under severe medical distress and the mf would not budge during the whole twelve-hour trip. That happened with American Airlines.
Stupid....if she paid for BOTH seats..then those are her seats.
End of the story....dumb slow minded airline.
Glad she came forward with this story...might be hundreds of stories like this that no one has the time to speak about.
jbentley8383 the thing is if it's a no show the seat opens for stand by passengers
Seats open for stand-by passengers even if they are filled. Just ask that Chinese doctor.
Delta Airlines One
How is it a "no show" if there's someone already in the seat?
She paid for the one person that is and was in the seat(the child).
There's no discussion or decision-making about it.

I would give them a "good" review: It seems United did it again. If you have other United stories, here is a great website to share airline reviews. www.targetmytravel.com/airlines/united-airlines
Me Davis do you see me pulling the racial card for an excuse, I'm Mexican
idontcare both victims had a part of Asian thats why he puls that card out
Delta Airlines One your comment makes no sense here.
Hell yeah, and the child could have been seriously injured from not being in his own secured seat, I cannot believe United can't follow it's own basic safety rules.
Apart from the airline’s outrageous mistake, if that standby passenger had any decency he would have immediately relinquished his seat once it was clear to him that it legitimately belonged to the child. How could you take a standby seat knowing the substantial inconvenience and discomfort it was causing that passenger, not to mention the serious safety issue?
That's exactly what I was thinking...I would rather to take the next fly than doing that to a mother and a child. That's just me I guess being a mother makes more empathetic
People are still flying untied because some have booked their tickets before Mr Dao's incident. The flight attendants are the idiots. The mother showed her the tickets and the attendant shrugs and walks away. Something should have clicked in her head.
Scottishroad35 Scots look how many people say they bought a ticket and they didn't have a ticket, look how many people put their child in a seat they didn't pay for. Look up delta airlines family "kicked off" they didn't own the seat

Have anyone noticed that Asian Americans are being treated rudely on airplanes
Europa Man everyone is racist in some little way regardless of what color you are. Race isn’t the problem.
love2CUsmile I believe the point Europa was making, was the fact that extra news showing racism, isn’t necessarily an unbiased depiction of discrimination in reality, the fact that 2 people of a given minority (in the us) have been mistreated (and I don’t believe dr dao was) doesn’t show how many others have, if any other group, because for the majority group (whites) it wouldn’t be newsworthy, to show racial discrimination we would have to have both statistics and details about who was being mistreated and how, and how is mistreatment defined, the mere fact that two stories appear showing mistreatment and they both happen to be of one group, does not mean that 500 stories of similar or worse treatment couldn’t be found for every other group
@Europa Man Yo reddish, stfu? go back and watch Fox news with donald trump.
Europa Man y’all white folks disappearing like flies in america, move the fuck over ya dumb fucks
Europa Man lol true
"No doubt uncomfortable, I'm sure she'll be well compensated"....I do not believe that she was looking for "compensation", only a safe trip for her and her son. The airlines should have turned the passenger that got her son's seat around, and found them another flight, no question.
A little common sense can go a long way, treat people like you would want YOUR family members treated....it should be just that simple.
Ms. Yamauchi you are so lucky it was a safe flight. They put your son in danger. I would have refused to fly. Not due to right or wrong but to protect my son.
She didn't want to cause a scene apparently. People care too much about what others think, especially my people. Asian parents usually teach you to be well mannered and avoid causing scenes. But it's too one sided. They usually don't balance that out with the good ol' American teachings of "don't take shit from nobody" and "you can let them start it sure but YOU FINISH IT". God I love America. But lately our own citizens have been failing to live up this American spirit because our governments been shitting on us for years now. Everyone needs to step up and act less pussy like.
Obviously they ate privileged and can do and treat people anyway they want and get away with it. The government should fine the 31/32 of their total money and assets with all the meanness they are doing and let them keep the 1/32 of their money and assets. Or devide it by a much higher number and let keep just a very little of their cruel money.
They also should arrest them. Deport them out of the States. They are too mean.
John Doe - right, she totally risked her child's life!
How is this policy legal?
Des Oliver -it is not and it against their own policy. Everyone must be strapped in just like a car. They just bullies and incompetent to boot

I don't get it, especially with the doctor, he was there first, he payed for it! WHY DID HE HAVE TO GET DRAGGED OFF?????
Alex Sienna they needed room for flight crew for another flight, the current for the crew asked for him to leave as it was randomly picked, he refused the airline then called airport security and he refused so they used force. He hit his head in the arm rest and started bleeding. That case was his own fault for not complying
"That case was his own fault for not complying" -- nice to hear you're so spineless.
zammmerjammer FAA standards, look it up. There are a lot of things flight crew can do that you probably don't even know about
Delta Airlines One Well, apparently United disagrees, because they paid out a settlement to the doctor.
NeoCreo courtesy public opinion, the contract and the laws give them the authority to remove him, the cost of legal proceedings, falling stock price , public opinion, and bad press made it cheaper to pay him off than fight it, doesn’t mean they were wrong legally or morally
What a pitiful excuse of an airline, she should demand a refund.
Why can't they just say she's 2 years old? Might as well say I'm 252 month old

Not booking with United Airlines EVER! Apologies are not adequate. A touch of common sense should have prevented it. This guy was on standby. Sorry Sir, we messed up we shouldn't have sold you this seat. You will have to get off. COMMON SENSE! Where is it with these employees?
Ok so.....the ticket for her son wasn’t even refunded?! Well gee I’m sure they enjoyed handing United Airlines 1000 dollars and only reviving an apology.
Her son is freaking adorable.
United Should be Sued by the people who just got screwed by them.
Seriously United, why overbook?
Levi C that is easy, every airline does it, if they didn’t tickets would cost more, in proportion to the amount of overbooking there is now, but stand by and overbooking are not the same thing
If a passenger has a seat already booked and is sitting in the seat they should not have to give up there seat to a standby passenger no matter what
Oh yea, it was the "employees' fault," you-know-what flows down hill. It was corporate POWER and GREED that's responsible. DON'T EVER FLY UNITED! The sight of that poor doctor is burned into my soul!!!!!
Fred Ferd poor dr? He deserves to be in jail, public opinion got him out and a settlement to go with it, as I understand it, when they asked for volunteers he agreed, till he heard it was credits not cash, he was asked to leave (IT IS IN THE CONTRACT THEY CAN REMOVE YOU FOR ALMOST ANY REASON) and he refused, if they make you leave hey have certain things they have to do for you, contract and laws, but you MUST LEAVE....therefore any injury you suffer from being forcibly removed while you struggle, excepting excessive force (he was not pushed into the arm rest he fell at it while he struggled to stay) is on you, not them, and public outrage is eroding both our laws and contracts
they might have released that seat on mistake, however, they could have still corrected the situation after they found out that the seat was taken. But they still enforced this mistake on this lady and her son.
Any updates?did she sue United for at least to get her money back??????
Look it up. It isn't hard to do a web search.
This is probably irrelevant but the baby boy is so adorable ❤️
Airline employees often have very callous attitudes. Hopefully they refunded her the ticket?
It all depends on the people who are placed in charge of customer concerns. If they are a bunch of SOB's then the customer is screwed,.
that kid is adorable :( 💜
Kids need a car seat or booster seat to travel in a car, the same rule should be applied to airplanes.
United is awful, I was flying with my infant son from China to USA and they first tried to move me from the seat I purchased (upgraded too by cash, not points) to the far back. I wasn't having it, demanded a refund of my ticket and I was getting off. They then said they made a mistake and let me sit in my purchased seat. Afterwards they wouldn't let me use the bassinet so I was stuck carrying my son for 14 hours in my arms (it was an overnight flight) as he slept -_- So far out of all airlines United has been the worst, this includes all budget flights. Never fly them if you can avoid it :(
Here we go again. .......
Honestly they could've just gave the guy who took the seat a refund and tell him they're sorry and give the seat back to the kid.
Yeah, all $75 he paid for it. She found out from that passenger that he was ninth on the standby list and paid $75 (yes, seventy five, that’s not a typo) for the ticket.
Oh the hell with this airline!
Apologies were not enough. Every time, they should be fined 100% of their annual gross income and provide another 10% to the customer. Just once a year will cause the airline to declare bankruptcy.
It's gotten ridiculous you fear for your life going in these fl8ghts not because of the possibility of the plain falling but because of the stuff and it's cruelty
Apostolia Γκολφινοπουλου -i recently didn't get on my flight to Chicago because of this fear. Crew acting irrationally. So ridiculous things aren't the way they used to be anymore and we are paying more money for all of this harassment.
That Passenger CAN Get a [ Very Good ] Lawyer for Free ! / It's Called " a Contingency Basis " !
That's where a Lawyer or his/her Firm Will Take the Case for Free and Collect a 1/4 to 1/3 Contingency ( A % of the >
Settlement or Win ) And in some States like California the Lawyer can Also Collect his Legal Fees from the loosing Defendant.
Lol NEVER fly with United, they're notorious for doing this.
How are they still in business. I'm floored after all of these United Airlines UA-cam videos
She paid for the ticket. The airline needs to refund both of their tickets.
Wow, that's saying something, fearing for your safety when dealing with airline hostesses
Well, if an airline hostess tags you as a nuisance and troublemaker, then those in charge of getting troublemakers off the plane will not listen to any explanation you might offer, They will tag that as resistance and will carry you off the plain unconscious if necessary in order to keep things on schedule and not inconvenience other customers. So fearing what the hostess will decide to do is warranted.
That is utterly BS. They scan it and didn't find that she had paid and reserved for two seats.
I didn't hear any mention of compensation (reimbursement)for her child's seat.
I hope they gave her a refund and compensation
If the plane had crashed the poor child would have died! This is disgusting.
I just scrolled down the comment section and noticed that there is at least one United troll commenting. Would "DELTA AIRLINES ONE" please stand up.
Yes. I just asked DELTA AIRLINES ONE on another thread here to tell me how he/she can justify blatant violation of FAA rules. Also, I asked why 25 pound bags should be secured while a 25 baby can just be there.
jewelmarkess I know this is a bit late but according to international aviation guidelines its considered safe for a child up to the age of 4 to be sitting on a parents lap for the duration of a flight shorter than 4 hours and 30minutes, any longer and it becomes a risk to health due to the increased likelihood of DVT developing at higher altitudes when movement is further restricted by something like a child sitting on your knee or pre-existing medical conditions
Rachel Lazenby Yeah, this applies for the parent on whose lap their child sits. But it‘s not safe for the kid because they aren‘t secured tightly. Imagine if they were going through turbulences and she lost her grasp on him...
Happened to my mom and I too, When I was younger then 9 waited 2 hours to pay for a voucher to get seats back.
Oh we flew United too.
apology not accepted. stop using United.
aww the kid is adorable 💖
If I was the person who was told to sit in the kids seat I would say no I will get another flight.
I agree 100%. The other passenger bears the blame by cooperating with the injustice. Probably smirking all during the flight.
I would have done my best to make the trip as inconvenient as possible for the guy that just stole my kid's seat.
Some people like to inflict pain on others.
@@radrook4481- He also told her later that he was ninth on the standby list and paid $75 for his ticket. SEVENTY FIVE DOLLARS!
they have so much history of removing and beating up paying customers and kids with tickets...
How can you ‘inaccurately scan’ a ticket with all the modern equipment..... doing work unconsciously perhaps?
Sounds like they really know WHO they let on THIER planes!!!!?!? "We scanned the terrorist's tickets but they didn't scan correctly so we placed them in with the pilot.......We apologize for the inconvenience of everyone dying. No refunds to dead people by the way, company policy"
Probably gossiping with one another during work.
*that kid is adorable*
The last I heard on this story was that United had offered her a refund on the price of her son's ticket. Just his ticket though! Why would anyone want to fly United? If they can't do simple job like scanning a ticket correctly, how well are they doing the really important jobs?
I read that later they did refund both tickets and they met her at the airport before her flight back (which was to Hawaii, so Houston must have been the connection on the way going), brought her to the United lounge, gave her a flower lei (?), and changed the tickets for her and the son to business class back to Hawaii. So clearly they realized they screwed up big time. She sued them (rightfully so). I couldn’t find anything after that, but I’m guessing United was smart and settled. They literally gave away the seat of a paying (who was legally required to be in their own seat) to a standby passenger.
Oh yeah, and the guy that took the seat later told her he was ninth on the standby list and paid $75 for the seat (seventy five dollars, that’s not a typo)
they need to refund her and her son's ticket That's almost $2,000 and I think they should also do more.
"27-month old son"
He is 2.
I have only flown United once which was back in 1985 when I was lucky enough to be given a First Class ticket. About 90 minutes before landing in Hawaii I requested a cognac. It arrived, no joke, in a polystyrene cup. When I questioned the stewardess she replied, without any hint of an apology, that the glasses had already been put away for landing. I was truly amazed and haven't flown with them since. In the case above I'm sure it was a deliberate decision for the sake of making money.
#2 Why didn't they put the kid on the standby's lap?
Robert Clolery Creepy, putting your child in a stranger's lap.
You would sit your kid on a stranger's lap?
With all the bs they’ve done to some innocent people, it’s gonna take more than just one simple apology. Remind me to NEVER fly with United Airlines.
united airlines needs to get their act together because they keep making these cruel mistakes and keep saying "sorry" thinking everyone is going to forget about it
Lmao, United spelled her name wrong in their formal apology. Nice
