I only just discovered this beautiful. Wonderful singer today and I am76. What a shame for me. But so happy that at my end I am so lucky to have been shown this magical person. The whole world would benefit from her now.
The music of Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. You have probably already found the well-known Fairport Convention version of 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes', which was composed by Sandy Denny. However you may not have heard this (BBC recorded) version - just Sandy Denny, accompanying herself on a 12-string guitar: ua-cam.com/video/jsqztvHIB9Y/v-deo.html
Why does sandy singing make me cry. I have been listening to here singing for 50 years now. In life she was no angel but she sung like one. I have missed you sandy all these years no one will come close to yout talents you died too young see you in heaven
I watch this and weep. When I think of the countless hours of mediocrity available on DVD. All utterly eclipsed by 1 minute and 1 second of something approaching the sublime.
Sandy had that beautiful evocative voice that epitomised the folk sound of her era. But seriously there are many many stunningly great singers and singer songwriters And beautiful songs of every era & generation when you step away from the purely commercial pop driven music market. Heavens! You wont be disappointed to hear wonderful variations of folk traditions and other forms of music around even more again in 2022 ..if you look around and listen a bit …
@@annanutherthing4373 Hello Anna, Well I do, to some extent!!.My neice (whose like my daughter) plays the fiddle and has been playing in folk bands for years. We were drenched in music as a family. I've listened to versions of the classic folk ballads as the decades have passed. Still, in my opinion, there is no other non classical voice to match her expression, technique, phrasing etc. All instinctive. Richard Thompson said once that apart from Dusty, he'd never heard another female voice to match her blend of expression and technique. And without name dropping (!!) I saw Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy, not long before Swarbs died. I spoke to him in the break. I expressed the above opinion - that (apart from Dusty) she had no peer, and he thought for a second and said , " Yep, I think you're right" I don't believe all generations are equally gifted; that post war generation were exceptional. But in the end music is personal taste and exploration. .As long as we keep playing and singing..and exploring!!! All the best.
So beautiful it was almost painful to listen to. I had the great good fortune to see Sandy perform. Once solo in a very intimate setting--The Bitter End, with Jackson Browne--and once at the University of Pennsylvania during her very brief reunion with Fairport Convention in (I think)1974.
I'm with you there Pete. Sandy's death was tragic. However we still have the memory of her, we are born, we live and we die. The important thing is how we live our lives, by enjoying life, realising we are lucky enough to have been born as millions did not make it, experiencing great music, being in awe of nature and the universe and striving not to harm others.
Please stop, you two!!! You are both in my prayers! Like the voice of the songbird that was the lovely Sandy:'-(... May she rest in peace and may you be forever loved!
What a rare precious jewel she was. I believe she and Swarb wrote this song. One of my favorites. She had a gift so few singers have of reaching into your very soul and residing there. Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, different styles but have the same melancholy and sadness that I hear in Sandy. Thanks for the post.
she is such a dear . to me she always looked so nervous until she really got going, then went to that place singers go.love this stuff. Thanks for posting.
While we don't have the whole video, the whole singing performance is now on you tube listed as "White Dress (Live On 'The London Weekend Show', 1975)"
What a glorious but brief treasure this is. We are now in a culture that seems to capture everything on video, most of it of little or no importance. And how much footage do we have of Sandy, the greatest female folk singer and one of the greatest songwriters in popular music? Just a handful of tracks, some incomplete. So sad.
How wonderful this little fragment is, and one of my favourite Sandy/Fairport songs. If only there was more to be found out there, even the full performance of this song :(
Much more than beautiful. I've watched this about ten times in a row, and words cannot describe the feeling I get every single time. Incredibly moving.
I just learned of this vocalist, she sang side by side with plant in thee battle of evermore, always wandered who that was, some of her music she hits that same register and tone, then it hits you exactly what parts she sang... what a voice but such a sad ending to her life and career, she needed to be around people that understood her troubles and conditions .. RIP Sandy... I know your lead in the big choir upstairs, bring it on...
I want to tell her (ecoute, ecoute-Sandy, la plus Belle) how her voice made me want to cry it was so haunting and beautiful... truly, who knows where the time goes:"-(...
I think this footage was discovered by Philip Ward, who wrote a book on Sandy. He contacted ITV and they allowed him to use only this one minute. There is more in the ITV archives. Noone knows why they're holding it back. I can imagine that there is more, possibly even a Old Grey Whistle Test performance by Sandy?
Lineup: Sandy Denny - vocals; Trevor Lucas - rhythm guitar; Dave Swarbrick - mandolin; Jerry Donahue - lead guitar Dave Pegg - bass; Bruce Rowland - drums. This was recorded some time in 1974/75 - I hadn't realised that Sandy did recordings with Fairport this late but it would have been magic to have seen her then (or anytime...).
Rising for the Moon was her last outing with Fairport...... Check out the epic One More Chance from this album .........a killer deep cut if ever there was one !
Sandy is so sweet in her vocal delivery. It is nice that these were filmed and eventually put online. RIP Sandy. I was so upset to find out that you died so young.
I remember seeing the Rising For The Moon lineup at Edinburgh in the mid-70s - a very special night. Where did this clip come from - surely there's more of it - somewhere? So desperately sad that Fairport, from this era with Sandy, never really got the recognition they so richly deserved.
Hi Ardconnel House! I'm too aloof from things and wondering if you found out anything over the years about the rest of the film footage. Is the original studio for "The London Weekend Show" still around where they might find in a dusty corner the rest of it? I suppose they exhausted that venture. Did you ever hear about why they cut that part of the film out, or how they found it?
Sandy Denny. Taken from us much too soon like many others. Her work with Fairport is sublime. Listen, listen from her solo album ranks as one of the most amazing songs ever. Eva Cassidy is another one I think of that can pull you into her soul and bring you to tears. Check out her version of somewhere over the rainbow.
Rising for the moon was a misstep for Sandy and Fairport artistic carreer, but i can't stop smiling and move me reviewing sandy and swarb, even in that ridiculous outfit! Thanks for sharing
Almost surreal.Watching this I feel overwhelming intensity of her expressing emotions that it brings tears to my eyes.Even on the old footage you can feel that captivating power of charisma..She is still dispersing the energy from the unknown. Damn, she was good.
Everytime I watch this I almost have a heart attack at 1:01! I would love to see the rest, but thanks for posting. I'm glad to know something was captured. Cheers
Sandy is the best female singer (I would probably also put Karen Matheson up there too) that I've heard in my lifetime. You don't train to sing like that it comes from the soul. Sometimes the plaintive ache in her voice almost hurts when I listen to her songs.
I saw Sandy Denny twice with Fairport- 69 and 75 (with Dave Mattacks rather than Bruce Rowlands on drums) - and once with Fotheringay, when they played The Sea in a torrential downpour. Such a wonderful voice.
Great video - is there no more from these sessions? I heard some years back that there is film of this line up,shot professionally, from their Australian tour ( possibly at the Sydney Opera House?) but that the TV company wanted too much money to release it.....
Thankyou Kahan - a beautiful few moments - such a fine voice and soul- Hard to believe she was tormented by lack of recognition from the money grabbing music industry. The beasts lost money but we lost much more. RIP
To hopefully find more film footage... is the studio where "The London Weekend Show" was long gone and no dusty corner where they might find something? Why was there an odd piece left? Was it cut out later for some reason? It's so clear and nice sound quality. I only found out about Sandy around 4 years ago. She gave so much, and the band, to the world.
Oh my goodness. I almost don't care that it's so short - it's so perfect. Denny's singing of this one verse captures her essence. I treasure all of her great performances, but this just might be her best - that breathy edge to the voice takes us as close to heaven as we can hope for now.
Yes, all fans need this in its entirety because there is so little footage of Sandy singing. Who cares that the credits roll on over the rest of the song.
Were there more songs performed in this program or they just brought them on to do the outro? I completely agree...who cares if there was a credit roll.
The lack of actual live footage of the wonderful Sandy Denny playing with Fairport Convention is very sad indeed. Although she and the other members of Fairport were considered as "musicians' musicians ", unfortunately they were not considered relevant or visually interesting enough for mainstream tv audiences. Such a crying shame.
It's not the only professional footage of her. It's the only known professional footage of her with Fairport Convention. You'll find TV footage on UA-cam of her solo and with her band Fotheringay.
Shoot! - like everybody else I'd loved to have seen the full performance. It seems to be Sandy in prime form, meaning a very rare and missed individual. But thanks, sandyfilm2011.
It is a shame that her life was cut short. She had a beautiful, resonant voice. Every word she sang was honest and true.
There is something beyond human about Sandy's voice, bypasses the brain & goes straight to my soul. Great songwriter too!
so true
amen
That's why Robert plant picked her to sing the battle of evermore with his band Led Zeppelin on their 4th album
Sandy Denny. The Voice. Sends shivers down my spine every time I hear her sing.
Listen to the Led Zeppelin song the Battle of evermore she sings on that song in a duet with Robert plant
I only just discovered this beautiful. Wonderful singer today and I am76. What a shame for me. But so happy that at my end I am so lucky to have been shown this magical person. The whole world would benefit from her now.

One of the most beautiful voices ever. ♥ 🏴
One of?
Forty years gone, and she still shines so brightly it brings tears to my eyes..........
Happy Birthday to Sandy - would have been 75 today….died at 31 😢
Never forgotten
She's forever in our hearts
Happy birthday, sandy
Thanks Sandy is by far the best female singer ever- it ts so good to have vids like this - she will never be forgotten
I agree 100% with this statement. The complete video with the rest of the song must exist somewhere ;(

Yes, indeed.
She was absolutely the best. I saw her in concert , but it didn't really reflect her amazing talent.
This performance is so beautiful there are no words to describe it.
you aint kidding
It drives me crazy that they don’t even have the whole song!
Simply amazing. I've loved her voice ever since hearing Matty Groves back in '73, at a Wherehouse Records in California.
Something about her voice is so like no other voice ever, makes me weep immediately...
+Mrariesdave I fell quite the same. Seen her so vividly young, with life pulsating through her voice, hurts deeply my heart.
Mrariesdave me to! Miss Sandy
Agree 100%. That's called truly gifted.
Me likewise ...
Absolutely.
I fell in love with Sandy’s haunting voice in 69/70, cemented by a gig by Fotheringay at Oxford Town Hall.
It’s a voice that just draws you in.
So beautiful it was almost painful to listen to. I had the great good fortune to see Sandy perform. Once solo in a very intimate setting--The Bitter End, with Jackson Browne--and once at the University of Pennsylvania during her very brief reunion with Fairport Convention in (I think)1974.
Words cannot describe how beautiful Sandy Denny's voice is.😇✌
Heartbreak. All I can feel is my heart breaking for her. My God, how I miss her, Dearest wee Sandy

I loved them so much, still do I guess. Listening to her takes me back to when I believed all things were possible, even true love.
Please stop, you two!!! You are both in my prayers! Like the voice of the songbird that was the lovely Sandy:'-(... May she rest in peace and may you be forever loved!
+Nancy Benefiel true love is possible but nothing lasts forever.

R.I.P. Sandy! What a sweet creamy voice, liquid beauty. So sad to have lost so wonderful a singer.
Beautiful voice. We once sang the Cornish song "How pleasant and delightful" together.
Sadly so short, but short is better than nothing - thank you very much for posting this!
Thanks so much for sharing this! Sandy Denny's singing plays my heart and it means a lot to see her 'for real', even if only so short.
This is the musical emotion we all seek!
yes!

Absolutely beautiful. Sandy was such a gem.
Sandy Denny is one of my favourite female vocalists, a truly beautiful voice and a great spirit.
Simply perfect - thank you so much for sharing this.
How wonderful this little fragment is, and one of my favourite Sandy/Fairport songs. If only there was more to be found out there, even the full performance of this song :(
Dear God, if only this lasted longer. What a voice, what artistry, what technique! Peerless.

Angelic voice, now where it belongs...
And Richard Thompson, too.
thanks for posting this! Sad it faded so soon! Beautiful!
Her voice was so pure, so beautiful.
I think we all wish there was more... & if only there had been more.
Thank you for sharing all you could.
Miss me, indeed!
Such a shame she isn't more known. Her voice is one of my all time favorites.
Sandy was a true one-off.
Her voice for me was like the wandering breeze blowing dust off the autumn leaves.
Thanks for this.
I'm 8 years late in replying- your post is pure poetry!
(Sadly, Sandy's grave at Putney cemetery is badly neglected)🌷
Beautiful talent taken way too soon ❤
I want to tell her (ecoute, ecoute-Sandy, la plus Belle) how her voice made me want to cry it was so haunting and beautiful... truly, who knows where the time goes:"-(...
oh yes,i so agree!
Me too. I'm so glad there are other people out there that feel the same way as I do!
Sandy. Gone but never forgotten. Who knew where the time went?
and don't forget she tod us that she had no fear of time ;)
And I had to study for some class the night Fairport played in D.C.......luckily tapes exist.

In just 50 seconds, Sandy drills right to your heart.
Thanks, much. And you might want to list the songwriter in your tags, "White Dress" is by Dave Swarbrick. I think it might have another title, too....
Goodness, as close to perfect singing as you will ever get. Thank you, thank you.

Awesome talent...Left us to early in life....She rocks..
yeah!
Fanstastic! Thanks for this!
Incredible!! Sandy was the best female singer ever, and there has been no one to match her since.
Jacqui Mcshee is leagues ahead, and had a band behind her that is unsurpassed in talent.
