How come no one writes or performs like this anymore?? It's so simple, yet elegant and stately. Sandy Denny's voice is what I imagine an Angel in heaven sounds like. What a great find.
Thank you so much. I fell in love with Sandy Denny's voice when I was a young lad and bought the Leige and Leif album. I'm 74 now and still love listening to her beautiful voice. This is the first time I've seen this video of her singing White Dress. I started crying as soon as I saw and heard her sing. Absolutely beautiful.
Unforgettable Sandy, angelic woman, you make a grown man cry - to coin a phrase. You deserved so much more inner peace and joy for how much inner peace and joy you gave to all those who have been touched deeply and indelibly by your voice.
I bought the Rising For The Moon album when it first came out and have loved this simple but utterly beautiful song ever since. Sandy’s voice is just incredible. Such a desperately sad loss to music.
Me too. It's considered a bit outside the normal run of Fairport convention albums because all the songs are modern writing, but i think it's quite exceptional.
The more of her work I hear, the more amazed I am. She put her heart and guts into what she sang. She's one of the reasons I have such a soft spot for British women!
This is certainly a beautiful song, It sails into the Heavens with Sandy’s stunning vocals, the mandolin, and the perfectly understated band performance. I can’t stop listening to it, it’s sublime!
There is so much dross around today by singers who are acclaimed as stars - Sandy Denny really was one and her bands were too - I love this lady's songs, such a pity the younger generation don't know her and her music - RIP lovely talented Sandy
For each lineup that Sandy played in there is only one (professional) video. This one is the most beautiful. Let's hope the rest will surface, too. And I'm sure that in some archive there are even more recordings that will one day come to light.
Sandy Denny, Jackson C. Frank, Nick Drake, and so many more musicians who died too young . . . all of their "psychiatric problems" were caused by drug and alcohol addiction.
Simon Nicol once quoted as saying when Sandy joined Fairport, it was like a crystal glass had appeared in a sinkful of dirty dishes! She really was different class, still missed so much, by so many.
Stunning... never saw this live footage before of White Dress .. got to see poor Sandy perform twice in NY in 1974 ... incrediblly powerful and introspective voice.. also great to see Trevor Lucas in this video... now if only a live video performance can be found of Nick Drake!
i cant remember a more emotive rendition of any song i've ever heard by sandy denny, or anyone for that matter. absolutely perfect, and much too short, a pity they didn't try and extend this some how, with a swarbrick violin solo and then repeat.
You've done a fine job, LP, and have made the most out of just over one precious minute of what has to be of the Holy Grail of lost Sandy/Fairport footage.
I once talked online to the guy who found this clip in the archives while researching a book on Sandy. He told me that he had to promise not to make the full clip available. Yet one wonders why they keep sitting on this treasure and if maybe there is more, an interview perhaps? Of all the available footage, this is my favorite because Sandy is absolutely at it and it's a song that means a lot to her.
I was so fortunate to see Fairport in the 70s at the Sanders Theater in Cambridge, MA. Sandy was apparently ill at the time as she had to take a break during the show. Fairport was one of my favorite groups when Sandy Denny was with them. This song is amazingly beautiful. She is missed - RIP Sandy Denny. Thank you for the video,

This Woman died way to young, she was so talented, one of the most buietful voices of all time.
No auto tune , no effects , no over production …just simple and pure vocals and musicianship !
A beautiful reminder of a unique little time in my life, when things seemed to be nicer than they are now (or anytime since the mid 70’s).
