Askeladd was serious about offering that place. You can also see it in how Bjorn reacted: Bjorn was furious, because he knows Askeladd the best. Bjorn is the right hand man, he understands him as much as it´s posibble with someone like Askeladd. And he understood that he was serious and Bjorn couldn´t accept that. He wasn´t ready to follow someone else so he interfered and went for Thorfinn.
I think Askeladd did what he did not because he wasn't willing to look weak in front of his men but because he was just chasing the bag he negotiated with Floki. Thors just happened to be a worthy opponent. Whether he won or lost, he was not leaving without Thors' head.
Just because standing on your principles is honorable doesn't mean it doesn't come with consequences If Thors just popped Askeladd as is cultural procedure, everything is lovely and he goes home lol
@@GRANIME No, they still kill him and take the reward money and possibly slaves. I don't know why you make the assumption that they'd honor the result of the duel when they explicitly say they don't
@@snake698 I think you assuming that everything Askeladd says explicitly is more than a half truth is far more wild, but that is how opinions work - have at it
RIP to one of the best anime dads ever
"A true warrior doesn't need a sword"
One of the central themes of the series, be sure never to forget it!

Thors didn't get himself killed, Thorfinn announced he was Thor's son and that allowed them to take him as hostage...
