And he says that Thors died a normal death because if he would have said how it really went these Jomsvikings would have known that the people who were with Thors survived and they would have searched for them. Letting the Jomsvikings believe that Thors died a "normal death" saved the asses of these young guys (and Leif Eriksson) who travelled with Thors. This show is very deep but you need to pay close attention to get all the little details. 8:38 - you get that right, Bjorn (the mushroom guy who went Berserker-mode) and the rest of Askeladds crew definitely were impressed by Thors. They don´t particularly care for Thorfinn here though. Here´s more like an interesting pet at that moment, someone who entertains them. You see that at 11:15 as Bjorn says it´s Askeladds job to fight Thorfinn. Not because he feels some kind of sympathy towards him or anything. Askeladd as the leader has to make sure that his rowdy group of Vikings is entertained (these guys need to like their leader and seeing that he is fit to lead, aka showing of his strength, otherwise they wouldn´t follow). I very much enjoyed your discussion afterwards! Many people don´t get what a complex character Askeladd actually is, only seeing all the bad stuff he is doing (let´s face it: he is NOT a good guy). But you seem to grasp him pretty well. I am excited to see more of your Vinland Saga reactions, I am sure you will enjoy it a lot!
Viking raid is the domain of free men. It's true that slaves are seldom vikings, but slave trade is very much viking business. Thorfinn isn't Askeladd's slave, if he was he'd be taken much more proper care of. He very much leaves him to his own device because he is indifferent if he lives or dies.
