This is an episode to go back to after you’re done with the season. There are nuances, especially with Askeladd, that you’d catch on a second viewing. It’s one of the few times in the series Askeladd was wholly sincere.

The mushroom thing is a myth that exist around viking history "Previous studies suggest that Amanita muscaria, a mushroom commonly called fly agaric, was used by the Norse to become berserkers. It is known that in Siberia this mushroom was dried and eaten during religious rituals to achieve a psychoactive state." it's a different type of mushroom btw not a "magic one "

Actually, the first time Askeladd swore by the name of Odin, not by the name of Olaf. But you are right, when he does so, he lies.
The mushroom Bjorn ate is neither poisonous nor the kind of magic mushroom you eat at a party. They're called the Amanita muscaria (or the berserker mushroom) and they're well-known to make people who eat them extremely paranoid and aggressive, Vikings really did use them in battle.
Thors taught us and Thorfinn 2 genuinely great lessons. «You don’t have any enemies, no one has enemies». «A true warrior doesn’t need a sword».
Thorfinn's VA's screams this episode are on par with Eren's "YAMEROOOOO!" in 1x1 of AoT.
I already watch season 1 and I still think Askeladd was honest with Thors when he asked him to be the leader ..
Imagine if he did?
Word will spread out and Thorkell would want to fight him in a duel almost immediately which he would most likely lose, and with Askeladd in the crew would ask Thorkell to join since Thors will not kill him...
Jomsvikings will face off with Thors, Thorkell, and Askeladd; Canute would likely be dead and Thorfinn wouldn't be a warrior.
Opening should be ok to watch now.

I don't think Bjorn ate a poisonous mushroom, according to legends it is possible that some vikings ate hallucinogenic mushrooms before battle.
I think it's called the berserk mushroom i remember someone mentioning it somewhere. And according to google it was used by norse to achieve a psychoactive state just like the one we see with biorn.

The whole scene with Thorfinn going mad is one of the best parts of the series not only the performance, however the theme of revenge is brought up time after time. Thorfinn is really in for it to take revenge for his father unjust death, and is just how it was during the viking era.

The special part of this episode is that Thors didn't die to protect his family and friends, he died to protect his "enemies". Thors could have killed everyone there but he didn't wanted. He literally died to protect Askeladd and his man. He chose death instead of killing another, even if the other was trying to kill him. Most people dont realize that and think he just died to protect his son, but thats not true cause as i said, if it was to protect his son he could have easily killed everyone there but he didn't take that route
Wtf are you talking about? He def did it to protect thorfinn and the others.. He said it would be free for all and he can beat all of them if he was alone.. He just thought it would be better to be the one to die rather than survive and have casualties specially his kid is with him
I think you misunderstood his motives. He didn’t kill them because he didn’t want to. He had given up on war and killings. That is what he believes a true warrior is.
He is not trying to protect his enemies but his ideals and beliefs at the same time protecting his people. And he chose death to save his people by appealing to the warrior in Askeladd.

@@smol6193 You can translate everything you said by not wanting to kill his enemies. If you watched the whole show then you understand (or was suppose to) that Thors is the one who embodies love most accurately. "love", differently from "discrimination" (ep 18), is not to chose who to save or who to love, (his son and family, like Ragnar did) but to save and love all people in the same amounts.
Thors is the true warrior because he embodies this concept of love perfectly. If you actually think about the message of the whole show you know that Thors is the true warrior, the one who embodies love, the "hero" that Askeladd is looking for, and the ideal wolrd that is "Vinland". Thors is that what every important character of this show is looking for. He IS "Vinland" for all these characters. The priest Bilbald, Askeladd, Thorkell, Canute... All these characters would find what they are looking for in Thors, because in a sense, they are all looking for the same thing, just represented by different "objects".
you are pretty much on the right steps to understand it but you are not quite there yet. keep thinking how you are thinking and reflect more on the show and you will understand it. Different then some, i can see that you have it in you, based on the way you write, the capacity to understand the true beauty of this show, which only a select few can even comprehend. Good luck

Is the 'love' portrayed in this show limited to just not killing one another? The Vinland that they all imagine is just a place free of killing?
If they tried to portray Thors as a symbol for 'love', it didn't get to me because of his past. It is more than just choosing to save everyone equally. So by that same definition Thors is not a true warrior. Nobody is a true warrior.

I personally think it's okay to watch opening from episode 1. The producers put it there for a reason, that is for viewers to watch. Besides, people who say there's spoiler are people who watched the show before. I don't think it to be spoiler for the first time experience.

Btw that mushroom is real, it's actually documented to have been used. It probably has some psychoatctive effect that gives soldiers some kind of a kick
Thors realized that Askeladd is working for Floki as an assassin. However, Floki was commanded by Sigvaldi to bring Thors back alive.
If news doesn't reach Sigvaldi of Thors' death, Sigvaldi will attack Iceland as he will think Thors disappeared, but Askeladd won't inform Sigvaldi either since Thors' wasn't supposed to be killed. So, Thors asks Leif to bring his head to Sigvaldi to save Iceland.
So good!
After this episode watch the intro and outro, nothing really can be spoiled now.

The berserker mushroom is actually real. Once called as fly agaric and a common viking's practice to go berserk in a battle
This episode is very Itachi-esc. Where it gets a whole new meaning and nuance on a second viewing, once you know what Askeladd is all about.

Not that Thors cant kill. He didnt kill ashkladd because if he kills him, Ashkladd's men will shoot arrows from top of the cliff. To save the kids, especiially Thorfin, Thors had to persuade Ashkeladd to free them. It's risky for the pirates might not do what they promise but it's the only way to possibly save the kids. And that's why he asked Ashkeladd for a duel.
and not killing him after he won the duel. That means Thors was doomed to be dead either Bjorn took Thorfin for hostage or not.

Yeah, ngl the fact that Leif did not grab Thorfinn and hold on to him until Askeladd and crew were far away is probably one of the more contrived/out of character moments in the series, it's just too necessary for the plot.

Honestly the OP is safe since episode 1. Now, if you stop frame by frame and in-depth analyze every sequence in order then every single opening of every single anime in the world would be dangerous to watch. If they didn't want you to watch it they just wouldn't do an opening in the first place. Just watch it normally, its literally no big deal.
