I think road work is important to learn the ability to prepare yourself not just physically but mentally. I know a pro that even considers listening to music as a short cut because it makes the road work enjoyable. @@PrecisionBoxing Hi JT I'm a skinny guy and I'm doin your 30 + min of footwork vdo , daily , except the weekend. Should I further run daily ? To improve my cardio n stamina ? Pls advise . 🙏
I'm a martial artist. I started doing runs, around 5 miles, after seeing the movie "When We Were Kings" and seeing Ali doing it. Now, after many miles of running later, it has been the long time foundation of my fitness.
When I first started, I had a patellar tracking problem, but did strengthening leg lifts and cured it. No ankle problems except once when I turned it stepping in a hole. Wrapped it and ran the next day. I wear well cushioned shoes with very little rise so I midfoot strike. Heel striking will give you plantar fasciitis. I stay off of concrete also and run on softer surfaces.
Allen, I'm referring to the heel to toe distance from the ground. It's also called toe-drop. This is from Runners World : One tenet of minimalist shoe design, however, has become widespread-a relatively low heel-to-toe drop. That’s the difference in the combined height of the midsole and outsole where the back and front of your feet sit in a shoe. I think about 4mm is ideal, relatively flat. I’ve been running 3 miles everyday thinking it would get me in shape for boxing and I was wrong. I’ve been doing sprints recently and those helped a lot. Long distance isn’t bad it’s good to break those mental barriers.
i was more tired than i am in running when i had incorporated this. Thanks Coach! always quality work and advice! stay safe during the covid too boss :)
I love roadwork. Punch running, laterals, backpedalling, sprinting. Was a bit self conscious at first but whatever. It's great discipline and I feel the positive carryover into the gym. Thanks, Coach!
Their were times, where I used to run long distances (10-12km) 1-2 per week, but since the last few years I quit those long runs, because I got to the point, where I realized that I'm a fighter and not a marathon runner. Instead of that I focused more on power and explosiveness, but after watching this video I'm concerned that road work with these implements will take my training regime to the next level. Keep that great work up!
Honestly I reach my peak fighting shape when I am running 6-7kms 4-5 days a week.. 10-12kms is too long and impacts the body too much in my experience. when I am jogging often I tend to slip more easily in and out of a rhythm when I am sparring and remain loose. Like when you are in-the-zone at the peak of your run, moving your body with synchronicity and breathing deeply without having to think about it. Road work is vital, you can always see the difference between a fighter that doesn't and does do road work.
Great video, I love how it's became a very well rounded defence and attack run. Healthiest I ever felt was when I took the plunge and frequently supplemented with real roadwork. I think it's got bad press because the experts want to pander to those that are too weak to take part!
Running is about building your aerobic base. That does two things if done correctly: it expands the stroke volume and efficiency of the heart; it improves metabolic function, improving the way you convert energy in the body. The effect of both these adaptations is that you will be able to operate at a higher intensity (more watts) for longer (more mins). That is going to translate to a much higher performance in any sport period.
I just now recently turned 40 years old. Boxing has always been almost like the foundation of my family's bloodline. What I mean by that is boxing and fighting in general has been in my family on my late father's Side going up three and possibly four generations. When I was a kid and I mean a young little boy, I got involved in martial arts where I did exceptionally great, when I went to my Tour tournaments I would fight possibly 20 25 other kids my age and I would leave there with a 1st or 2nd Place trophy every time. But to be honest with you, it wasn't in my heart and the only reason that I did so well as a kid with martial arts is because I just wanted to make my father proud a, especially because he was an incredible boxer when he was younger and he box Golden Gloves and he was a heavyweight top contender. He drifted away from it because he had been given an opportunity to really make a lot of money selling marijuana and by the time he was 23 years old he had purchased 147 Acre Farm and had all the material possessions a man works his whole entire life to obtain after they retire at age 68, yet he had all these things in his early twenties. I noticed when I would get into a fight out on the streets not once did I utilize anything that I had learned within the martial arts Taekwondo, in fact I kind of look at that as a joke. I got my first dirt bike at the age of 5 and I got on that thing and within a half an hour I was riding that little bad boy around like I have been Racing for years, lol, and when I turned twelve and racing motocross on a competitive level. I raised from the age of 12 to the age of 17 or 18 and I was in the semi-pros and I would win all of my Nationals things like that. I don't want to sit here and eat my own horn that's definitely not what I'm trying to do here. I threw all my potential away because I ended up experimenting with drugs and before I knew it man just was a horrible strung-out Junkie and I have been clean since 2005 however they prescribed me Xanax which is probably the most addictive medication that anyone could ever be on. It's also one of the hardest to get off of. I am so out of shape it's disgusting, and I have abused my body for so many years and now it's catching up with me. Even in my drug use and the deepest lowest darkest time in my addiction I still would watch Boxing and I still would spend time boxing just Shadow Boxing just to see how much my technique had changed just to test my skills to see how this coordinated I've become and I checked my cardio which I was smoking cigarettes for a long time and I mean years but it's been 19 months since I've had a cigarette butt I feel like I cannot get back in shape, I don't know if it's because of what I've done to my body and now it's catching up with me but I never have an appetite and I'm losing a lot of weight and I'm just so discouraged man. I look at these guys nowadays that are fighting professional, and I see the incredible talent that is out there right now just awesome but I look at it and I watch it and I think about back in the days before drugs had come into my life and I remember how I would dedicate myself to training and practice and everything that I have ever been taught in regard to boxing, whether that be like I said shadowboxing spending time on the heavy bag or the speed bag just going over pivoting and a lot of peek-a-boo style head movement correctly, playing around with friends slap boxing that gives me the opportunity to see how effective my counterpunching is. And I watch these young men fight and yes they have incredible Talent, but I look back at the way I would train and then love and passion that I had for and I think to myself as I'm watching, I'm seeing where this box here where he's making a mistake here he's making a mistake there why isn't he covered himself here why isn't he can't counter-punching he just had the opportunity to do so why didn't he take it, why no more head movement why are you not going in the inside when you know the guys got us 20 freaking inch long arm you know what I mean so like why I think to myself why couldn't that have been me, I feel like had I have stuck to it that I would be I would have been able to beat these guys and I just I know it I feel it and it sucks man because I threw it all away for a drug addiction. Solo I'm 40 years old do you think there's any way possible I could get back into shape and I can condition my body properly and become the strongest 40 year old that I can become, I'm not talking about becoming the strongest and greatest of shape 40 year old in comparison to other 40 year olds, I'm saying I would like to be the best and shape conditioned physically mentally & psychologically. In regard to Foods because I really don't even eat much literally at all I don't have an appetite and I'm losing a lot of weight the wrong way. Is there any kind of foods that you know of that will help me with my energy level I would also make my body begins to be healthy healthy healthy eating enough that I can begin to go back to training because I have the fuel, that energy, the motivation to really get myself in shape. That's all I'm really asking and I thank you for your videos I love them I think you're incredible teacher man and I love what you're doing and I asked you please please keep it up please God bless man I hope to hear from you.
+Strangerdenfiction thank you for sharing your story, it's deep. I think you are on the right track for energy level. Stay away from anything addictive and eat whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, brown rice, potatoes, and nuts. At least that has worked for me. And make sure to get your sleep and stress levels under control
The best thing you can do is trick your feet up, pivot, back peddle, 180's, 360's. It's awkward at first but keep working on it you build such a solid foundation for the ring. I been doing this since I started running, same with skipping, never stand in one spot. Ali did this which is why he was able to move like he did in the ring. Ppl overlook running because they are used to training it like they are about to enter a race and you're not.
I absolutely hate running and even my wrestling coach in H.S. used to make fun of me while walking next to me and say, "Im walking next to you as fast as you're running" haha but I know how inportant it is to conditioning so I still incorporate it into my training for mma to this day.
Awesome content again, love your channel. For Wing Chun class warmups we do some side shuffling, switching, two and two, forward and backwards jogging around the school, I see how it really helps lower leg quickness, agility, and footwork. I need to start doing it down the sidewalk at home too. Kind of like when we were kids running around.
Great video! I've just been hitting the treadmill to work on baseline conditioning as I prep to start training at a boxing gym once I move next month, will have to start going outside and incorporating some of these other movements too.
I mix in footwork drills, jumps, lateral and backwards running, pivots, BIG TIME. when I run at the track or the field just inside the track, I'll do the two long legs of the track mixing directional running, and the short legs I'm doing punching while moving in different directions or bounding and jumping drills ie: 150 m alternating lateral running 50m side shifting or changing relative direction while throwing punches 150m running alternating forwards and backwards 50m running with a "6 step" jump sequence in the middle (bounding or lateral bounding or broad jumps or carioca or w e), and cartwheels and double leg shots and sprawls thrown in at will This is while running a ~1hr 10km
Simply running is boring. For me it has always helped to add variety. Playing basketball is a good way to work in those lateral movements, many times with hands up, or working the hands in several ways. Tennis has also helped me. Those short burst sprints cannot be overlooked for serious training. This is a great video. Thanks
I don't know if you're familiar with Bazooka Joe, but he says the best roadwork is to just get in the ring, work the mitts, bag, etc. Do you think that with enough ring work and bag work, you can replace running? Or are the benefits of running irreplaceable to a fighter?
yes, it's true and he's right. BUT, it's only provided that you make up for that extra work by doing it in the gym. For example, one fighter trains 10 rounds and goes to run, then the next fighter who doesn't run needs to train 15-20 rounds to make up for the difference. You know what i mean.
I go back and forth on the topic. I mean... if you were a painter, how do you get better? You paint. However, painters also have to do auxiliary work like learning how to mix properly, proper brush stroke, etc. These are less glamorous than painting, but they are integral to getting the final product. Cardio is that to a fighter. It may not be super fun, or as glamorous as sparring and looking great in the ring, but it is important. But if my job is to be a great fighter, could doing more fighting and less running hurt?
Paul Adams yes and when the guy who is more conditioned pushes your cardio and work rate if you tire boom. even amateur boxers who only do three 2 minute rounds run. U see people people all over these type of vids looking for excuses or easy way out
Been running 10km 6 days a week for the last 6 months, and i do your 15 round bag workout onc a week, and shadow box for an hour everyday, the long runs daily have helped bigtime can shadowbox at a good intensity for an hour no problems, thanks JT ive learned a lot off you, God bless
i jog 3 miles sometimes 6 miles, and i am throwing loose jabbs, hooks crosses & uppercuts and i will start the footwork driills& deflections as you suggest here Tnx.
I am pretty consistently getting 4 miles in under 30 minutes now. I need to add some of this stuff in, but if I don't set a clear pattern or goal then I won't feel as obligated to push myself.

Thanks for all your videos. Great work and super helpful. Thank you
JT is awesome. Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks for boxing tips and I love boxing
Thank JT for the tip. Gonna do just that.
I absolutely hate running and even my wrestling coach in H.S. used to make fun of me while walking next to me and say, "Im walking next to you as fast as you're running" haha but I know how inportant it is to conditioning so I still incorporate it into my training for mma to this day.
Brilliant explanation.. roadwork is a must... look at the thousand boxers and muay thai fighters
Best advice on YT 👏👏👏
Love your videos bro your clear and understanding even my wife subscribed
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing
I tried this and it felt good and it improves my dodging skills 😅
my go to trainer always love this guy keep up the great jt
THE CAMERAMAN CAN'T KEEP UP WITH YOU BOYYYYYYY
+remzgangsta lol!
Every time I run I feel like death. Just gotta push through it💪🏼
Great video! I've just been hitting the treadmill to work on baseline conditioning as I prep to start training at a boxing gym once I move next month, will have to start going outside and incorporating some of these other movements too.
Thanks. Keep up the good work. !!
Thank you coach
I mix in footwork drills, jumps, lateral and backwards running, pivots, BIG TIME.
when I run at the track or the field just inside the track, I'll do the two long legs of the track mixing directional running, and the short legs I'm doing punching while moving in different directions or bounding and jumping drills
ie:
150 m alternating lateral running
50m side shifting or changing relative direction while throwing punches
150m running alternating forwards and backwards
50m running with a "6 step" jump sequence in the middle
(bounding or lateral bounding or broad jumps or carioca or w e), and cartwheels and double leg shots and sprawls thrown in at will
This is while running a ~1hr 10km
Any sort of movement is good dont overthink it just get up and do it running ofcorse is great for boxing because its making u fitter
Love your stuff! God bless brother!
awesome ,m watchin all ua videos to correct my flaws
This helps so much! Thank you!
Thanks coach!!!
Thank you ,Coach vital information here..
Thanks a lot!
Your vids are great man!
Simply running is boring. For me it has always helped to add variety. Playing basketball is a good way to work in those lateral movements, many times with hands up, or working the hands in several ways. Tennis has also helped me. Those short burst sprints cannot be overlooked for serious training. This is a great video. Thanks
Conor couldve used this
He got knee injury
this aged well
That's his biggest weakness, he is gassed after 2 rounds
@ha ha nah he still have it.what makes you think he didn't get it anymore
@Pixelsack facts😂😂
Excellent video!!
Thank you this helps alot
thanks man these are some amazing tips
Iron Mike would get up at 0400 every morning and go for a five mile run.
Thank you
dude great video, thank you again!
I don't know if you're familiar with Bazooka Joe, but he says the best roadwork is to just get in the ring, work the mitts, bag, etc. Do you think that with enough ring work and bag work, you can replace running? Or are the benefits of running irreplaceable to a fighter?
Paul Adams i heard bazooka talking abt this on jre. Imho i think roadwork brings a fighter to the next level
yes, it's true and he's right. BUT, it's only provided that you make up for that extra work by doing it in the gym. For example, one fighter trains 10 rounds and goes to run, then the next fighter who doesn't run needs to train 15-20 rounds to make up for the difference. You know what i mean.
exactly
U see people people all over these type of vids looking for excuses or easy way out
I do everything you’re showing
Been running 10km 6 days a week for the last 6 months, and i do your 15 round bag workout onc a week, and shadow box for an hour everyday, the long runs daily have helped bigtime can shadowbox at a good intensity for an hour no problems, thanks JT ive learned a lot off you, God bless
That is some solid work!! Be proud of that!
And this is why...treadmills suck. Great video 👍🏼
Good job, man!
Run up and down steps with Dumbbells
I been doing sprints two times a week.
I don’t do boxing but I do Judo. I’m trying to add a long distance run to my training.
i jog 3 miles sometimes 6 miles, and i am throwing loose jabbs, hooks crosses & uppercuts and i will start the footwork driills& deflections as you suggest here Tnx.
this is a good tip thank you iv yoused it and I wun a mager fight last week
i would love to do stuff like running laterally but it'll be embarrassing in public
Grow a pair of balls and just do it who gives af what other people think
amazing tips as usual
I do these with construction boots just like the great fighters of the past
Good video- thanks
Great advice
Thanks
a very good video, thanks
I am pretty consistently getting 4 miles in under 30 minutes now. I need to add some of this stuff in, but if I don't set a clear pattern or goal then I won't feel as obligated to push myself.
