When I was training to box, my coach made us run the 400 three or four times with five minute breaks in between. Shit was miserable. Definitely made a difference in the ability to throw more punches per round though.
Long runs are good for developing your aerobic system to help you sustain extended work and manage weight, and at least for me help with getting used to pushing and being uncomfortable. But you are absolutely right you need to do short hard bursts with short rests to simulate a round if you want to improve.
He talk as a amateur u only have 3 rounds to win a fight but for professional long runs is more effective bcz as you say it's help you maintaining and sustain extended work but in your starts as amateur u need to focus on sprints bcz you need to build the power the explosiveness but sure you can in your active recovery day run 10ks with easy steady pace for developing your aerobic system

You’re right, shorts runs are better to get use to a fight tempo but i would still incorporate the 10k runs (like once or twice a week). I think long runs give you the fitness and endurance in the first place then you get your body to adapt to the frequency of fighting through sprints etc..
Thanks. I used run everyday and it was good at keeping my weight down. Yet I would still be tired during the fight. I think I would overtrain. That and I learned doing roadwork is different than running. Road work you shadow box and move your arms, sprint / walk .
This is a great video, very true indeed. I also used to make the mistake to only running 5Ks (bcs I found them more chill), and that made me lose muscle because it’s long distance and so your body believes that you don’t need it (hence y long distance runners are all skinny). My coach told me I need to go back to doing sprints immediately and they REALLY help with cardio when your sparring especially. So yeah, more sprints than 5Ks guys 💪. Lamppost to lamppost is a great strategy by the way. Sprint with all you’ve got from one lamppost to another then jog/walk/slow down to the next lamppost, then sprint again! Do 3 sprints in total, then walk all the way back to where you started. And do it again. I normally do 3-5 sets of these.
Great Video !! The reason I lost many of my amateur fights as a more „stocky“ fighter was because of my jogging instead of simulating high pressure attacks by sprinting.
Facts bro...I was doing the same thing. Getting gassed with my quick 5k times but still gassing out in sparring. Gotta know the 5k is more for endurance and sprints for the actual fighting cardio.
i'm 13 years old and i do runs of 2k with just 1 sprint and resting 2-3 minutes between runs, now i will try to do more sprints, thank you! this will help me a lot improve my stamina.
I have found in the past adding hill sprints or running up steps during a 5k run of resting and sprints works wonders for fitness, 41 now and can still go hard in 4-5 2min rounds sparring, and i keep up and outrun youths playing football 😂 brilliant videos mate keep them coming 💯

If you run long distances you build a good base so you can run faster paces and recover faster from sprints. So diversifying your runs should include long runs as well as intervals, fartleks, shorter tempo runs, 3-5ks… plus, you will have the mental health benefit of learning to hold back and conserve energy. I do high intensity sports professionally for 20 years and only 2 years ago I started feeling the difference by adding aerobic base training ✌🏾 trust me, it helps.
Best comment, the video is good for starting the conversation but it throws the baby out with bathwater. Also I know it is specifically talking about boxing but as a Muay Thai fighter, I watch a lot of boxing or MMA content. In the case of Muay Thai, the distance running not only conditions your legs, it does also help with the slower starting pace of many Muay Thai fights.

Journeymen that work have to make the best use of the little time they have lol
Are you an amateur boxer? If you are 12km runs will not help you as much as shorter 3/5km runs with a higher intensity. Simulate ring stamina, you won't be in the ring for 1 hour.
@@yaseenramsey Yes I am. And that's exactly why I watched this video. Because I know I can run pretty fast for a long time but still get gassed in sparring sessions sometimes. Watching this was a huge help, thanks.
Long runs are good for building the size of your gas tank, sprints are good for putting in high octane jet fuel. Plus the long runs/pounding helps build ankle and leg strength. And long runs helps with quicker recovery
There's a time and place for longer runs also. Most people train for 90 minutes a time in their local boxing gym, and sometimes people are sparring many rounds against many people on sparring days. Longer runs can help you last longer in training, resulting in being sharp and focused for a longer time, as well as recovering faster from exhaustion. This makes it possible to practice more. And if you want to practice more, you need to withstand it. This is also a good thing in amateur tournaments, when you might have to fight several times one weekend. It's also some mental toughness in doing long runs. I'm not saying one should do it often, but I am saying that it can be useful. The legs don't hurt as early when they're used to beating themselves for an hour on the road. They also get better balance if running in the woods. Better for the knees as well.
I just run for a about 3k with but during that run I find a points in front of me where I sprint for a max speed (for example a lattern or a tree in a few meters away). After that, back to the normal pace for a few seconds and sprint for another point again. It is great for a boxing and making a running a little bit less boring.
Sounds good no objections there. Try to incorporate sprints alone at some points of your training. 5 week running programme on the CHESSBOXING 101 course 👀

I do 3 miles 4 days a week. Then I’ll have 2 days of speed work. 1st day will be a mile all out slowing down and accelerating as needed. Takes about 5 minutes 20 seconds. Then I’ll do sprint intervals for sustained times on the second day. 15-20 minutes. The 5ks are just relaxed runs at a 8-9 minute pace. Heavy weight training 4 days a week. Never on a speed work day. Take one full day off a week.
May weather is know for running 7 plus miles, and rocky marciano who was known for endurance would run daily 5-15 miles especially more so as a fight neared, the guy would do half marathons the week of the fight
You need to train all 3 of your energy systems if you want to get fit easy long run where you keep your hr from 130-160 helps train your heart to pump blood faster at the same intensity but sprints are necessary aswell i like doing 3 min fast then 1 min walking and do that like 6 times and you’ll be fucked
I disagree with cutting long runs out completely. Personally I try running 5k but I also do simulated fight lengths on the bag and in sparring, as well as sprints and other types of cardio work. They all have different benefits, jumping rope is great too, swimming, cycling, you just gotta switch it up and do what works for you. Plus the best way to really get your cardio up for a fight is spar a lot. A big reason you get tired is because you are getting hit, so get used to staying calm and being able to deal with punches. But you still have to get in your road work.
I learned to run from boxers in The Bahamas who have won international title fights and 100% of these fighters trained low intensity 10 mile runs at least once weekly.
I’m an amateur boxer no fights been training for about a year having problems with backing up too much and struggling to land on back foot boxers any tips
You still have to have long slow endurance to build your heart muscles which in turn help clear out byprodutes produced from your other two energy systems you use during boxing which are both enhanced by your aerobic base and also makes training easier to recover from you have to do both and even then roadwork is just general conditioning closer to the fight you need to get more specific and use the conditioning protocols but with spar & heavy bag work

I've seen older people run 10k faster than that. This feels like an infomercial 😂😂
Would it be good I just did 10 sets of 100meter sprints 5 times a week and did no 5km runs?
So how many times should i run 3-5k/sprint in a week?🙏
How much seconds should the be the sprint? Or you sprint till you get tired, jog a bit and repeat?
SpiderRico says I’m with you God
What you mean by rest between runs like how often should i do sprints
