Music selected from the UA-cam Audio Library:
"Grace Behind the Curtain"
a video on the stand build would be great with the height of the stand and the stool !
Hi Al! Here is a link to the scroll saw stand video. Thanks for checking it out! ua-cam.com/video/oPgTkTBacww/v-deo.html
I have no interest in a scroll saw. I just watch these videos because I wish I were as happy as Steve is.
+TheRacerRich Ha ha, thanks! Just smile and make someone else smile. :)
TheRacerRich I'd be happy like Steve too if I could trade my wife and mother-in-law for that scroll saw. I wonder how the scroll cuts human bone,,, hahahaaa
lmao
Seriously! I was thinking the same thing. I have an angry work face.
Hey Steve , been scrolling for forty years , have this DW 788 model for so long I can remember . I've so many different blades and my choice is the Flying Dutchman Blades . O I did start out on the craftsman 16 variable speed for a good 10 years . My DW 788 is on the factory stand and I have a 4 foot led shop light above it about a foot from the saw . I've make usually Christmas ornaments from mine to you name all though the years . Enjoyed you video , my saw is a type 2 , only trouble with it I blew one fuse one time. .....I usually order the gross amount on blades , bigger savings , just google Flying Dutchman blades . So many utube videos - hard too watch them all . Keep up the videos ...
The look of total delight on Steve's face as re revs up the saw=priceless!
I just bought a scroll saw,you inspired me,thanks Steve !!!
Cool! Congrats on the saw purchase! I like scrolling, it's relaxing.
Great tool mine is well over 20 years old and still going strong
Wow, that's awesome Bill!
Welcome to the world of scroll sawing. Be careful, you might just get hooked! As other have stated, I would recommend waxing the table top and using Flying Dutchman blades. I personally use #3&5 ultra reverse and #3&5 spirals. Remember, the lines are just a "guide." Good luck and have fun!!!
+P.A. Alvarado Thanks! Getting lots of good suggestions, especially the revers and spirals. I had no idea there were so many different ones. lol Kind of overwhelming. I'm making a shopping list of all the suggestions.
Thanks happy Steve. No doubt how happy one can be when he loves what he does and does what he loves! You're an inspiration steve!!
Congratulations on your new saw,, i think a scroll saw i great for a hobby workshop because is fun and safe to use and also you can complete proyects without spending much on materials,, hope to see more of it,,,
saludos desde Mexico!!!
+argelio cavazos Thank you Argelio! Yes, I plan to do scrolling to relax and for making gifts, plus maybe my kids will enjoy it.
I bought the DeWalt saw about a year ago. I gotta get those comfort knobs. They're great if you're doing a big, complicated project. Anyone who is a serious scroll saw dude knows what I'm talking about. I bought a Delta electronic saw back in 1985 and it lasted for over 30 years. But I am glad to get this new DeWalt. It's not any better motorwise, but the blade changing is so much easier!!! I've used better blade changing saws before. I worked in a woodshop with the Excalibur saws. They were easy blade changing. But their top speeds were not fast enough to suit me. If you get really used to the saw, you might appreciate the extra speed that some saws have. Well, blah blah. I'm not a salesman for DeWalt. HAHA
Yeah, I really like my Dewalt. And the knob makes loosening the blades much easier. It's a good size to grab onto and the knurling is real grippy. Search for the "Lift and Click" attachment that holds the arm up while you feed the blade through a hole. It's a good helping hand.
I have the exact one for ten plus years now its very reliable. congrats on the new toy.
+AP Airsoft Thank you very much!
From one Steve to another, thanks for the unboxing and demo of using the DeWALT DW788 20" Scroll Saw!!!
If you haven't checked out Steve Good's website, you are really missing out. What a great guy and his patterns are free. I would suggest you honor his work and send him a donation (a link for paypal is on his site). His patterns are high quality and very creative. Nice to see him get some props on your channel, Steve Carmichael! Love your channel!
My preferred scroll saw blades are Olson's PGT 9RG. They leave a very smooth cut that I have never had to sand.
Steve I literally just picked up one of those for the high school I teach at. I had a choice between one of the DeWalt's or two of the Porter Cables. It was definitely the right choice to go with the DeWalt. Smoother action, easier blade changes and a much quieter motor. Thanks for another great video.
+Thomas Verga Awesome Thomas! It's so much better than my old one. I think this is a great tool for kids to learn on.
And the composite decking made fantastic house numbers
As someone without a lot of space or my own (I have access to a nice shop, but would like to work at home instead) a scroll saw is certainly on my wishlist.
I know this video is about 3 years old but I just assembled my saw and man is it heavy. You made it look light the way you picked up that box. It took my daughter and I both to lift it. I definitely need practice using it. If I drove the way I was scrolling, I would have killed a few people! I'm going to order your projects from Etsy and practice.
Hi Janine! I have to confess...the box was empty. lol I usually shoot the intro last, so the saw was already set up when I shot that scene. Ah, the magic of television. lol Congrats on the new saw and thanks for checking out the project plans. I have some on my website too at www.thecarmichaelworkshop.com
@@SteveCarmichael Too funny! I was like, that guy is so strong. He's carrying that box like there's nothing in it. 🤣I did order your scroll saw plans from Etsy. My daughter and I had fun piecing the templates together. 😁
That was the first thing I used my "Coal Bag Steve Stool" for, I cut out some house numbers using composite deck material at my scroll saw.
+bc65925 Ha, cool! It sits higher on my workbench so my stool's not tall enough. Go figure! lol
I am buying me one soon. I priced some Dewalt scroll saws and some come with stand and a light which that all can be added on. It cost less if it comes without all the extra features. I can always use a stool and add a bright white light. I love your video and ca.t wait to get into wood crafts.
Thanks! I like the scroll saw because you can sit down and relax while cutting and completing a project in one sitting.
I get my Olson brand blades from Sloan's woodshop. They are great people! I use a lot of 2/0 reverse tooth skip tooth blades. For thicker stuff I use #3 or 7 Mach series from Olson as well! I would suggest to sand the table and wax it on the scroll saw. It makes wood glide so easy!
And great job on your first project on the new saw!
+Leldon Maxcy Thank you Leldon! I'm going to have to make a shopping list.
Enjoyed this video a lot because I'm looking at getting the same saw because, I too, have an old old Craftsman scroll saw and don't want to have to change blades on it anymore. Too labor intensive and from what I have read, this Dewalt is rated high and will help the time it takes to change out blades. Thanks and again, I really enjoyed your video and your enthusiasm. Cheers and keep making sawdust!
Hi Randy, thanks! I still love this saw and use it a lot. It's the saw that most people in our woodworking club use as well. It holds its value well too. It's so much easier to use than the old Craftsman. Good luck!
Steve Good has a great stand from Van Winkle. with free plans. very easy build. Great looking saw. have fun
Congrats Steve. Love my DW788 and has been working like a charm for years. Best if luck and have fun with it.
I agree on the Flying Dutchman blades. Depending on the wood and thickness, my blades range from the Ultra Reverse #1,3,5 to Spiral Flat End blades in #1, 3, 5. Been using the spiral blades more lately. Slightly wider kerf, but easier to see with my old eyes. No twisting and turning of the work piece too.
Hi Mark, Fabian's Tiny Workshop send me some to try from Germany. He said they are the same maker as the Flying Dutchman. I also have some spiral ones to try. Now that I have my stand done, I can make some fun projects and test out all the different blades. I like the idea of not turning the work piece all the time.
Steve, I just came across this older video so a belated congrats as well on your new addition to the family. When you were gunning its engine it sounded similar to a 56 Bel-Air I used to have, and that's a good thing.
Thanks Glenn! It sure does hum much better than my old saw. Well worth the extra money.
I have one of these, including the DeWalt stand, which I never you. Never the less, you are going to love that saw.
Wooden teddy bear is where I get my scroll saw blades and I like spiral #1,3,5 also scroll reverse #3,5,& for thick stuff #7
+Brent Weisenborn Thanks Brent! Will check them out. Thanks for the good info. I think I will get some of each and try them all out while I practice.
Yep that's the best way to do it sample them all. The good people at wooden teddy bear are super friendly, small family business. Scroller on line very good people to. Oh yeah go for flat end spirals they r better than regular spirals
Congrats Steve. Nice saw and a cool project. My wife Francy loves to scroll saw. She had an old Craftsman saw and we upgraded it to the Porter Cable saw this weekend. It's a big difference. Enjoy and I'm looking forward to seeing the cool projects you will make with it.
First off you are amazing with a scroll saw. I just purchased a wen 16" scroll saw and its been great but i need more practice. I have an 18 pack of three different plain pinned blades that work great for long straight cuts but recently started using pinless spiral blades for tight corner although they tend to make wavy cuts without slow steady control
I use either Olson or Flying Dutchman reverse tooth saw blades. Most places that sell scroll saw wood or patterns carry them, or you can find them on EBay.
Thanks! I like the Olson reverse tooth ones too. That's what use most of the time now.
Congrats on the SS upgrade, Steve! I've had my 788 for about 10 yrs. and love it to death. It has thousands of hrs. on it and has yet to let me down. A couple things you may want to look into are a magnifying light and a foot switch, they make it so much more enjoyable. Another thing, when you build your stand, you may want to make the back leg(s) adjustable. I find if the back is higher and the table is tilted toward me, it's more comfortable to work. Also, Flying Dutchman blades can't be beat IMHO. Have fun, buddy!
+John Shaffner Thanks John! Yeah, all those things are on my list. I'm going to hit up my buddy Hans to help me 'pimp my saw'.
Steve, if you put clear packing tape on the wood then attach the pattern to that, all you have to do is pull the tape off and it is clean.
I luv my DW788...glad to see you have one....the Bear Silhouette looks great....enjoyed watching.
+Simply Wooden Creations Thanks Russ! I'm making a funky scroll saw stand now. Almost finished so video should be up in a few days.
Dewalt makes really good stuff. Your saw is a beauty, you starving youngun! I'm back in the saddle with a newish computer. Now I just need an education to go with it. Hurry and get your new shop. I really liked the music on this one too!
+Lewie McNeely Yeah, I love the saw! Congrats on the new computer and keep working on that edumacation.
Having a hollow head, it runs out as fast as it runs in.
Great site! After wanting a DeWalt for YEARS, I just bought the one that Grizzly has on sale! I started With a Dremel 16" that I called "Shaky Jake" , then graduated to a Dremel 18" which doesn't vibrate nearly as much, but was all I could afford at the time! . I am making a knife for my Grandson, and no matter what blade I used, It wouldn't touch the laminated material I am using for the handle! Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new saw! I couldn't find the link for the comfort knobs, but they look to be a great addition, and I think some sort of arm lifter will be my next purchase.
Thanks Carl! Email Marcus at scrollsawcomfortknob@gmail.com
Congrats Steve. The DW788 scroll is truly a Ferrary of the scroll saws. All you need is the Easy Lift device and the foot pedal. Both work great for scrolling big projects. Happy scrolling pal!
Thanks! I just finished a stand for it, so that video is coming soon. I think I may do another video on adding accessories to it.
Great. Happy Scrolling!
I love doing all sorts of scroll saw work, I prefer the "Flying Dutchman Scroll Saw Blades". I enjoyed your video and will definitely be getting the wing nut adjustment knob. Thanks for sharing.
Just did this pattern a week ago awesome .
Great project, Steve! Looks like an awesome saw too! Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Thanks for smiling at the camera once more. You're awesome. :)
+JWAM Thank you for watching! :)
Hey Steve, I have been wanting a new scroll saw for awhile. I have the same old craftsman saw like yours with no blower. I been looking at the same Dewalt saw. I think from what I have read and seen that is one of the best scroll saws on the market in that price range. Ok I'm jealous! I hope you enjoy it Steve!! I really like the project it came out nice. David
Congrats on the dewalt saw. Looks like it cuts great. Now more video's to come.
+Donnie G Thanks Donnie! Yeah, I can't believe how smooth it cuts. No sanding needed except for the edges.
Very cool. Looks like a great saw. To this day, I still enjoy my scroll saw more than any tool in my shop. I use it quite frequently for a lot of our projects as well. It is a very versatile tool. Great video, Steve.
+Waylight Creations Thanks! I used the Craftsman a lot just for quick cuts on stuff. It's amazing how much better this one works. Time to do more detailed projects.
Great informative video on the DeWalt 788 saw. You can purchase quality OLSON blades on Amazon.
Wow that's impressively quite, my Ryobi sounds like a jack hammer. Thanks for the video Steve.
+Dan The Maker Man Yeah, it's really surprising how quiet it is compared to my old one.
Steve ... You know this already, but for others, there is a great resource in the Gwinnet Woodworkers Assn: Hans Meier gave me some terrific advice when I upgraded to a DW788. He also sent me photos of a stand that you can build at very reasonable costs.
+Gerald Jensen Yes Gerald, Hans is the man! He also uses a car battery and inverter to power his saw off the grid. Pretty cool. I need to buy Hans lunch and get him to trick out my saw. Oh, and he has the extra table underneath to catch cutoffs and stuff that I think I'll be adding to it.
+Steve Carmichael When you build that extra table, do a video on it. I'd like to see how it was done ... I need one myself!
I have found the Pegas brand to be exceptional great
Congratulations, for your new scroll saw, work is very well done.
+Francisco Corona Thank you Francisco!
Beautiful machine and Art. Congratulations on your new saw. thumbs up, Steve.
Hermosa tu maquina ! Que la disfrutes haciendo magia con la madera ! Saludos desde Argentina!!
Thank you Steve.
Very cool bear with tree.
+Elesix Estepa Thank you Elesix!
Man i love my Dewalt 788. I use my saw daily, I have a bit of an addiction to scrolling. I can't wait to see some of your projects.
I've been a fan for a while. Your channel is one of my inspirations and a big reason why i started documenting my projects. Take a look at my channel if you want. Congrats on the new saw.
+Russell'sWoodShed I plan to use it a lot. I have a lot of small boards that are about 6"x12" that are perfect for scrolling projects. Glad you started documenting your projects. Will check out your channel tonight. Thanks Russell!
Wish you went over some of the features of this machine ,like low vibration cause of duel parer-rel arms etc.Your vids are awesome ,well done .
Great Video Steve! Mine just came in the mail, looking forward to setting it up.
Awww Man, you're just having to much fun! Really nice new tool (toy) that I know your going to be listening to jams at while creating some cool designs.
+MRrwmac Yep, I like that I can sit down and use it. It's a relaxing tool to use. Music would make it even better.
Thanks for the info on the knobs. I have been hunting on line with no success for the information.
Cool Stephen! The knobs are great. If you google 'Scroll Saw Knob', the first couple of links have info for Marcus' knobs too, in case anyone else needs the info.
thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/topic/20091-dewalt-scroll-saw-knurled-knobs/

Congrats on the new toy. Those knows are cool.
I liked the video and really enjoyed you happy outgoing personality. I have this same saw coming tomorrow to replace a crappy Craftsman scroll saw that is horrible a cutting anything. I turn a lot of wood on my lathe and look forward to using my new scroll saw so I can have more variety in the shop. Thumbs up and you got a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing about the knobs as well.
Hi Wayne! Congrats on the new saw. I had a Craftsman too and could not believe the difference the Dewalt makes. I think the scroll saw is a tool where you can really tell a difference between the cheap ones and the good ones. Thanks for subscribing!
Parabéns pela nova aquisição show de bola adoraria ter uma dessa pena que aki no Brasil não existia certos equipamentos parabéns amigão show😉😉😉.
Very Nice Scroll Saw Steve, at first I thought you were revving up a Motor Bike the way you were testing out the speed control ha ha. I haven't really tried anything on a Scroll Saw yet, looks a nice peaceful way to do some projects though. Those knurled knobs your friend made were really handy as well, looks safer as well.Looking forward to some Scroll Saw videos from you now, and hope you bought the missus something nice as well? Take Care my Friend and Regards to the Family, Barry (from England)
+Barry Roberts Hi Barry - Thanks! Yeah, it's a great tool for relaxing and letting you mind wander. The knobs are great. Wifey gets a trip to England sometime over the next few months with her mom. I'm staying home though. Take care!
Pity you are staying home, would have been nice to meet you if you were around my area or at least near enough. Maybe next time eh?
Great looking saw and project, Steve. I've heard and read where there is a big difference in performance when you step up to the higher quality saws, which you have just shown.
Such a nice tool. Im still on my old Ferm which is a cheap one like your craftsman.
A scroll saw is like a lathe. It can seduce you away from every thing else in woodworking. Unless you have ADD like me. Steve, I'm going to enjoy your channel. My wife doesn't seem to have a "side" of the garage, but she is tolerant.
Very cool Steve ! Congrats on the new toy in the shop
Nice snag Steve. I have one of the "Type 1" models and it does a great job for a non scroller like me.
On the stand build. You may notice that the DeWalt stand for that saw it is built with the saw on a downward slant for ease of viewing the pattern and like you said, less fatigue. Something to consider.
BTW: I like you music choices. It's relaxing. I have a difficult time with some that nerve shattering stuff some folks use.
Enjoy the new tool. JimE
+Jim E Hi Jim! Thanks! Yes, I plan to build a stand that has an angle adjustment under the back leg. I was just taking some measurements and setting it at different heights to see what felt best. Now to design the plan.
Looks like an awesome saw! Been thinking about that one. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
I see you don't have the guid on....glad to see its not a crime to take it off. Thanks
Oh man. That thing looks like a dream compared to the one I have from Ryobi.
+TheGeekPub I can't believe how smooth it cuts. It's so easy to release the blade too. Huge difference over the old Craftsman.
Hey brother bear. I have been researching numerous scroll saws trying to find the one I want to invest in and this is the one I believe I want. I just recently got into work working and found a 80 year old craftsman for free and I was instantly hooked. Not sure about the best place for blades but I have been really intrigued by spiral blades and not needing to spin the work piece unless needed for throat clearance(my old saw a has 24" which I enjoy immensely) but heard that reverse skip tooth blade reduce the need for sanding. Sorry that's all I got in my woodworking infancy. Would appreciate any more knowledge you have. Hope you keep SMILING!
Hey Thanks!!! Wow that saw sounds really cool, especially for free! I have a hard time cutting straight lines with a spiral but they are great for random shaped cuts. I use the reverse blade a lot and it does reduce sanding to almost nothing.
@@SteveCarmichael just got a Wen 3921(from my change jar) and cut my first pieces with a reverse tooth. Loved it about to try out a spiral. Thanks for the inspirations!
I have heard from some of the scroll saw clubs on UA-cam that the DeWalt 788 bearings are not well lubricated from the factory. Have you re-greased the bearings on the arms of your saw? I want to make sure that I take care of this if it is a problem before I put a lot of mileage on my DW788. I ordered a bunch of blades from BearWood I ordered about 5-6 different types but haven't used them yet. I also ordered the Pegas Chuck Head for the DW788 from BearWood but I am just getting started in scroll sawing. I need to make a teardrop peace sign for my sister's birthday next month. I am using olive wood from a tree that we had at our house since 1968. Sister is an old hippie from the 1960s so I think she will appreciate the peace sign from our old olive tree that was in the family for the past 52 years. BTW, i really like your smile when you are woodworking. I can tell that you really love your work. Thanks!
Hey, thanks! That peace sign sounds like a great project especially with the sentimental wood. She's gonna love it. You probably saw my friend Bob from our local Gwinnett Woodworkers club talking about the bearings. I don't use my saw that frequently, so I haven't bothered getting him to service it, but at least he is nearby if it starts getting noisy. Good luck with the project and enjoy your saw!
@@SteveCarmichael Thanks. I think it was a Gwinnett video that I learned about the bearing lube issue. Like you, I will probably wait until I hear some noise, or add the lube in the rare moment that I have a couple hours of spare time. I never knew that olive wood was used for woodworking until I ordered an olive wood wooden kitchen utensil set form Israel. I love the wood and it has many interesting patterns in it. I heard that the reason it is rarely used for woodworking is because you can make a lot more money selling olives and olive oil from the olive tree than you can by cutting the tree down and harvesting the wood. Therefore, most of the olive wood used for woodworking comes from tree trimmings. This is exactly how I acquired my olive wood. My mother passed away in 2019 and we had to sell her house. I needed to trim a big branch from the olive tree before the house sold, so I saved the branch and it has been seasoning for about a year and a half. I live in California, but I used to live in Georgia back in the early 1960s. My dad was stationed at Robins AFB and we lived in Warner Robins. I had a baby sister that died there just after birth in 1962 and she is buried at the Magnolia Cemetery but never had a grave marker. Last year I worked with Magnolia to get a marker placed and I visited the grave-site and my old stomping grounds last year. I was very impressed how friendly folks from Georgia were. Very different from the people in California. I miss Georgia and the people there. (And I LOVE the peaches - had a great time at Lane Orchards) Maybe some day, I'll move there. Thanks again and God bless you and your beautiful family.
Great video as always Steve, can't wait to see what you can do with this machine!
nice purchase! great looking project too, Steve. have fun with it!
Nice job Steve. Good luck with the new saw.
Nice project Steve! Congrats on the new saw ..I went from a craftsman saw to the dewalt like you did and it was like a whole new world opened up and tons of fun ...happy scrolling buddy 😀
+Trevor Carter Thanks Trevor! Yeah, there's a huge difference. The detail I can cut with it is awesome!
very good job on the project I also have a 788 and I enjoy it also. get some flying Dutchman blades and Charles Dearing patterns and u will be set. keep up the good work steve.
Great tool. Nice to get a product of creativity. Congrats on the purchase. Like!
Cool, I like those knobs.
looks great!! and looks like you where having a fun time!
+MarcusICP1 Thanks, yep! This thing is fun!
Damn I want a scroll saw too!
I`ve always wondered if the saws were worth the different prices Thanks steve have fun
Nice rig Steve. I have an old Delta collecting dust under one of my benches. Maybe it's time to get it out and make something.
AWESOME!
I just notice that you have polish coat of arms sticker. Nice :D
Cool Steve!
Awesome Video Steve, Love the new Scroll saw, It looks good and strong and looks like it has a very smooth operation. I really liked your Bear scroll work it came out Brilliant. I have that pattern in my files but I have not got around to cutting it yet.. Thank you for sharing. Take care my friend...
+WoodCrafts 67 Thanks! I really like the saw and will use it a lot. Already working on mothers day stuff.
Steve Carmichael I am looking forward to seeing them. :)
Beautiful tool there Steve!
+Peter Matthew Thanks Peter! The yellow sure brightens up the shop.
Hi Steve! Great scroll saw demonstration. Very nice machine and great tips my friend! Cheers! Daniel
+Daniel Vilarino Thank you Daniel!
Hi Steve congrats on your new Scroll Saw I can see that you are going to have lots of fun in making lots of funny projects Can't hardly wait to see what next. By the way just like you said I do like your first project as well looks like it went easy .
so awesome!! you've got the mac daddy scroll saw!
good work, I really need to upgrade my old craftsmen scroll saw to something nice like this :)
ooh better get a set for sterlings new dewalt scroll saw!
+whitewolf8758 Hey, yep, I checked and Sterling already has some. He got them after he did his video. Our videos kind of overlapped this week. lol
Great review and project!! Can't wait to see the stand build. :)
Great job Steve. Have you ever tried a spiral blade? I have heard that they will cut in any direction. I don't have a scroll saw so I don't know how they will work.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks for sharing
Roy
5:35 That grin though
I really enjoy watching your videos, great advise and reviews, Thank you! :)
Excellent video Steve! I have a cheapy from Harbor freight that works OK but I'm ready to upgrade. Dad has that D Walt and loves it! He also took off the guard. I found my workpiece hops up-and-down with the guard off but that's probably something I have to get used to. I know you just got it but if you end up trying to spiral plates I'd be interested if you like them. I'm not able to do the spiral blades on the scrollsaw I presently have.
Would love to own one of those DeWalt DW788 Scroll Saws but after buying the CNC machine it may take a while :) Great video and tips.
Nice video Steve! Everybody is getting one of these seems like, maybe I should get on the bandwagon!
+Dread Knot Woodshop Thanks dude! Yeah, Sterling and I kind of overlapped on the videos this week, but I think we covered some different stuff.
