A scroll saw is a great addition to any woodworking shop. Adding intricate cutouts and millwork to other projects give them an aesthetic boost. I have a 15 year old, cheaper RYOBI table top scroll saw, but I don't use it on a daily, or even weekly basis. The saw is very portable. It's home is in my woodshop, which is an out building and heating the building during winter to do a few hours of scroll sawing isn't always practical. During winter, I often bring the saw into the rec room of the house to work. With a ShopVac attached and the ShopVac in a separate room and a 16 foot hose connection, the saw produces virtually no dust and debris and makes no more noise than my wife's sewing machine. Safety glasses are the only PPE I find necessary. During beautiful summer days, I clamp the saw to my heavy duty patio table to work on the patio under a roll out awning to enjoy a few hours of scroll cutting in the great outdoors. The scroll saw is one of the safest tools in the shop and no more dangerous than a sewing machine. I supervised and taught my 11 year old grand daughter to safely use the saw and she has enjoyed expressing her creativity making bird houses and feeders, Christmas ornaments, an array of decorative wall art and gifts for her friends.
You convinced me to save my money and buy the Dewalt. You are doing great job and giving reality advice. I am proud about being cheap and a scrounger!!
Kia ora from Aotearoa (New Zealand). Wow this was the best, informative video I have found so far & I've seen alot! Thank you soooo much for making it, & not only have you made a well explained video, you have also made it encouraging for me. I've had my scroll saw for two years this month 😢 & haven't used it once 😢. I suffer from real bad depression & struggle with believing in myself. Im hoping i can change my thought patterns change coz i really wanna start using it & putting my ideas in to action. Thank you again for taking your time to create, share & encourage, im looking forward to watching more from you. I hope my message finds you & your family well ❤
i think you did a great job at explaining ,,,especially the part about giving up,,i just bought the dewalt scroll saw,,should be here in a few days,,,,im really looking forward to getting good on it,,there is so many things i would like to make
I have a pretty highend hawk 26in saw. I got lucky and found it at a auction for $125. I like it but the absolute best saw I have personal ever used is the Shopsmith one. If you ever see one online used for cheep grab it. You can get them free standing that do not require the Mark 5. But I do love the shopsmith mark 5 too. I even made my own back before I got the hawk. It is one of the only videos on my channel. Scroll saws are a lot of fun. I started on a scroll saw at age 8 40 years ago
Great beginners video and I Love your shirt. Us girls Can use power tools just as much as the guys can. That is not to mention our being good at working on cars to, but that is a different story.
Eminently safe. A table saw will remove your fingers in a split second. A scroll saw while it can cut the inattentive finger will not sign your home over to a neurosurgeon to reattach your fingers
My husband has a table saw and I won't go near it when it's on. We have a band saw that might do the job I'm wanting to do but it scares me as well. Lob a finger right off with that thing.
😂 *MY* saw has NO tension adjustment & NO speed dial either... but then again it was $10 at a garage sale & about 20+ yrs old. I couldn’t afford a $1000 unit.. 🙁
Great videos. I’ve had pin blades but looking to get pinless. What are your thoughts of the modified skip reverse compared to the modified reverse that’s on the package you have in this video the 5R. Thanks
You can buy lumber at Home Depot’s for 70% off. They have a cart called culled wood which have bad spots. If you can work around the bad spots it’s a good deal. I have bought probably a hundred boards that way
I have watched manyscroll, saw videos, but have not seen any that definitely say you can cut Formica with scroll saw. I have a piece of wood with Formica glued on that I would use to make a dog food bowl holder that is if I can safely cut the holes Without leaving it all jagged and messed up. I know I could just try it on my scroll saw, but I am asking have you ever heard of it to cut a piece of Formica?
I have the Dewalt DW788, I cannot seem to stay on a line, and corners, well that’s just not working out. I was so inspired to scroll, but after trying so many things for the past two weeks, I think this isn’t gonna work out. So bummed.
Sorry to hear that! Few things to try... check your tension. If it's too low, your blade will want to drift. Look ahead as you cut. Also, you could try a higher speed. I think you can be more accurate going faster versus too slow. Corners can be a little trickier. Have you watched my short on cutting corners. I am using modified geometry blades. Different blades can also provide different results. I hope this helps, and it does take alot of practice.😊 What type of wood are you cutting?
Great video, my question is how are you getting the arm to stay up like that on your scroll saw? I have the exact same one but I have to use something to hold it up. I was about to purchase the lifter on Amazon but I don't see it on your saw.
I tightened the bolt at the end of the arm just enough to hold the arm up. I was going to purchase the lifter as well, but saw someone else do this. I tried it, and it worked! I thought over time I may need to tighten it again but it's been fine.
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns I just read about that this morning after asking you I went and researched. The only thing I could find about not doing that was having to retighten it and another said something about it could cause damage to the mechanisms inside. How long have you been doing it that way? I am in Canada so the lifter is more than I would like to pay for a piece of metal haha.
Best beginner scroll saw video I have watched. I just got a scroll saw and am looking forward to trying it out. Thanks!
Awesome, and thank you!😊

I bought a scroll saw recently and not used it yet. You’re a good teacher. Followed your channel for more good advice
Ty for this video. It’s been many a year since I’ve used my scroll saw.. just the refresher course I needed!!
Great!
Your pep talk at the end is priceless. Thank you!!!
😊
Thanks for watching!

That's awesome!! I have at times wanted to bring the Dewalt outside while my girls played, but it's a little too heavy.
You convinced me to save my money and buy the Dewalt. You are doing great job and giving reality advice. I am proud about being cheap and a scrounger!!
Thanks, I love my Dewalt!
I love that you put so much detail into your videos but stay on task. Thank you. Still considering if I want to invest in a scroll saw.
Thank you!! It's so much fun😊.

Did you make that "Load Blade" ?
Looks really cool...
Do you have a print out of it?

I love your videos!! I enjoy watching them. You really explain everything I sooo appreciate that!!
Glad you enjoy them! Thank you! 💝
I also use the Pegas modified blades. Seems like I use #5 the most.
I use #5 and #3 a lot.

Apparently to get a good blade tension when you ping the blade, it should be in the key of C
Yes, that is correct 😊
Great videos. I’ve had pin blades but looking to get pinless. What are your thoughts of the modified skip reverse compared to the modified reverse that’s on the package you have in this video the 5R. Thanks
The only reverse tooth blade I have tried is the Olsen PGT double reverse tooth blades. I found they cut mdf easier, but dull, really fast.

I would say about 9 months or more.
