We don't hear this concerto often enough in the concert hall. It's almost always the Dvorak, which seems to have become the Rach 3 of cello concertos. I was watching the Hallmark 2004 adaption of Frankenstein and was struck by the fact that the opening theme of the Schumann is the leitmotif of the entire two-part production, being played throughout the production in various permutations and various arrangements. My personal opinion is that this is one of the best cello concertos out there just dripping with romanticism and that unmistakable Schumann "sound". Right up there with his piano concerto which is also in a minor. Seems to be one of Robert's favorite keys.
Heart warming to see these friends together, whose temperaments so suit the piece. From 1977 I believe, and in the audience, Artur Rubinstein, among other distinguished persons the camera lingered over.
Schumann a-minor Cello Concerto is for me the incarnation of endless love and passion ... and the highest possible expression of the word "romanticism". With a special remark: This is nearly only achieved through that solo voice. The orchestra is reduced to the harmonical frame. - Mstislav was the Cellist with the perfect sound. No other could be that creamy warm.
Gaspar Cassado had the most colorful cello tone! Arto Noras had the biggets Loudest cello tone ever! More genius than Rostropovich DuPre Casals=Gary Hoffman Karine Georgian Daniil Shafran! The Really bad cellits are Really=Mischa Maisky! Maisky was only 6th prize winner in weak Tchaikovsky competition! No-one liked poor awful Maisky jury and audience! Maisky is only famous but not that good only average awful! Mozart wrote do not make my kids average players! Yo-Yo Ma the most boring ever! Jacqueline Du Pre had a small tiny tone in the big concert Hall! Natalia Gutman(bad vibrato!)

Aww. The perfect accompanist. The profound delicacy. Never to be seen again.

And the hands of Piatigorski !
For whatever the reason the lp recording was slammed by media
Without a doubt the finest 'cellist in my lifetime although Du Pres, Casals and Ma come close.
