Hmm, I began cooking for my boxer, my sheltie and chihuahua mix 2 months ago. I did alot of research on nutrition, do's & don't and what absorbs well, what creats gas and which to stay away from. It has been suggested by every Vet source including our own vet to not feed cauliflower, Brussels or broccoli due to they're hard on the canine digestive system so instead feed spinach, and green leafy veggies like kale. Mushrooms were on a toxic build up list to avoid and flax seed unless ground first produces a gel like coating around the whole seed and will pass through completely whole giving zero benefits. It's been suggested to feed fish oil or whole fish such as mackerel or sardines ( if canned, only in water reduced sodium or no salt added as fresh/frozen is best. Chicken gizzards and hearts are also highly nutritious to feed with livers. I also will make one batch using beef, one from a leg of lamb (buy after Holidays when stores need to sell off what not bought before the holiday saves as much as 50%) and one batch chicken or turkey ( buying whole turkeys around holidays and freezing saves alot of money, as well as boneless skinless chicken thighs then cooking in an instant pot or Foodi then putting in processor are much cheaper than buying already ground. I put the whole eggs shells and all into a blender and pulverize them in one step. Oats are good if not something like quaker quick oats, whole oats from a good organic supplier such as Bob's Red Mill were suggested, as is brown rice and quinoa. I add chopped carrots, frozen peas and green beans too. My dogs never have gas and love mealtime now. I do feed a multivitamin and joint supplement daily too. I also make up about 64 cups at once because I feed 5 cups per day and it's an all day event.

Awesome. Yeah verdict are def mixed on cruciferous veg since many cause gastro irritation. I’m going w a combo of the items you’ve suggested for suplimental feeding. My girl gets Farmers Dog sometimes but if I don’t consistently switch up her diet she skips meals!

Just a quick and simple tip, for the veggie I use baby food, pea/carrot/mixed veggie, as dogs digest veggies easier with no skins. Been doing for years and had great results. Plus they love it!

Would need to increase the portion of liver (to atleast 8 oz) and calcium for this to be truly balanced, also lacks the daily amount needed for Vit E, B2, Se, couple others - but this is a good base to build on.

Beef liver should be fed on a very limited basis and not every day. This is clearly stated in every Veterinary post.

How much does this recipe make and how much should I feed? I have 2 dogs, 75 lbs and 20 lbs. Thanks for the recipe.
I think this makes approximately one pound. I prepare this but with ground turkey/ground beef.
Dogs need to eat 2%~3% of their weight depending their activity level.
75lbs - 1.5 to 2.25 lbs divided in two meals per day
20lbs - 0.4 to 0.6 lbs divided in two meals per day
This included 2.5-3 servings for medium sized dog like Golden retriever or Lab

This is quite similar to Dr Karen Becker's balanced diet for dogs. Dr Becker uses liver and cod liver oil, quite likely superior to the cottage cheese. She also has kelp powder and Omega3s (I see. no source of Omega 3s, but the above does look balanced anyway.
We don't recommend giving the same diet everyday. This recipe can be alter according to you and your dog's need. any addition or replacement can be done in this diet.

If buying raw dog food- what would you recommend the percentage of meat be compared to the vegetables? 70-90% meat?

We are starting a 50/50 with our Doberman.... kibble mixed with w/ homemade... a lot of experts recommend it that way, to keep it extra balanced

Ultimately I hope to eliminate kibble completely, but I still need far more research and in depth learning about canine nutritional/diet/balance needs, before I can feel fully confident that I wouldn’t accidentally cause some kind of deficiency or something... I’m confident in my ability to provide a very healthy, balanced, well sourced diet for the people in my home, so I think it’s achievable... but I don’t feel knowledgeable enough to take the leap yet.

Can you feed this to a 8 wk old pup
Most dogs that eat a raw diet have already conditioned their pups to eat raw. My pups start a raw diet - with kibble (so they won't starve when they go to their forever homes) at 4 weeks. At 8 weeks you would want to make sure they are getting the right amount of calcium. Also... chewing on a raw- meaty bone WILL help with teething- as long as the bone is NOT cooked- it is safe for chewing- ALWAYS SUPERVISE YOUNG PUPS WITH ANYTHING THEY ARE CHEWING ON- food or toys. Best advice- DO YOUR RESEARCH. Dogs live a better-longer life eating NON-PROCESSED FOOD.

The ingredients are good but it's not balanced for 'dogs'. Dogs need organ meat as well like shown in this video.

I have been feeding my dogs homecooked for for years, mushroom and bell pepper would never be in the mix and please expect some kind of stomach upset with this mixture if fed too often.

@@Cindy-bee The only veg that I ever use is butternut squash, sweet pots, broccoli, peas, runner beans and a little spinach. Chicken, lamb or beef with half cup of water, on high gas for 5mins, turn low and leave for half hour, stirring occasionally. A pinch of parsley, thyme, mint and rosemary.
leave on low for about half hour stirring. Lots of liquid in pot add 1 cup of rice stir and leave for half hour. Turn off and leave to cool. I do add a vitamin and mineral mix to their morning meal. Please don't forget the Turmeric 1 tsp. I started this because my cavalier would not eat commercial. Now have two German Shorthaired pointers and Cavalier and they all do very well on it.

I use red bell peppers. Excellent choice of nutrients. My yorkie weighs 6 lb. Have no tummy issues. My research shows red and green bell peppers are very good .

The meat way too long. You lose all the nutrients that way. Grind and cook on med high heat till no longer pink and till the temperature reaches
165°. That's all you need and will preserve the nutrients.

The flax seeds need to be ground. Otherwise, they just go through the digestive system with no nutrients absorbed.
Thank you for this! My Indian dog is a very picky eater. Even if he gets a faint whiff of ginger or veggies in his regular food, he'll waste all of it and go hungry. But I'll surely try to put everything into the food processor as you did and check if he eats or not.
On the other hand, my lab eats anything and everything; but unfortunately, he has very bad food allergies. I'm giving him Wild Earth. But I'm constantly worried that just giving him dry kibble won't do him good in the long run, now that he is 7.

I noticed that too--even to the side info graphic on the video. Very similar but she uses hemp seed/oil; cod liver oil; no cottage cheese; liver; kelp; and no mushrooms (it is a dubious ingredient--some say not okay for dogs, personally wouldn't feed).

My 4 month old puppy doesn't appear to like the consistency of raw eggs, so I am going to scramble some and see if he will eat it that way. He is fussy. He likes tuna fish, but he doesn't like mackerel. I'm going to try him on sardines in sunflower oil next. My puppies menu for the next week includes chicken, turkey, goose, duck, lamb, beef and tripe. Including veggies and offal.

Very close, but Dr. Becker does not include things such as oats, rice or grains in her home made food plans.
It's a total rip-off. They just copied it exactly and then added in oats.

Animal cannot eat ginger, onions, garlic .
Use caution listening to this video! A lot of things caught my ear, not for the best.... do additional research that is breed and condition specific. Not all "healthy" diets are healthy for all dogs....this video definitely makes some inaccurate claims and gives some not so good advice. I worked as a vet tech for 15+ years so I'm not just guessing.... example: flaxseed needs to be ground up. Whole flaxseed is not only pointless but possibly can cause some irritation
