I have 5 First Alert units with fresh batteries and they periodically beep - loudly - usually 3 times. Not a "low battery chirp". Tonight 3 decided to go in sequence 🤬. If this works, you're a hero.
Your comment was helpful. Didn't know about holding the button down for at least 10 secs after removing the battery. Went to the store at 7 am to get new 9v batteries. Reset the disk by holding the button down for 10 secs. Put the brand new battery in. The disk still shows a flashing red signal, even tho the battery is brand new. The chirping is still happening every 10 seconds and its coming from behind the unit in the ceiling. Ugg. This happened (of course) on Friday night, so the condo people won't be back until Monday. Meanwhile, the chirping from inside the ceiling continues. I need to find another place to kill time the rest of the weekend until Monday. (In all honesty, I think I had some kind of power surge last night that might have messed up the unit)
Great video! My only question is why these instructions not included with the detector and why couldn't they have designed the product to "reset" without needing to unhook the electrical connection?
This helped a lot, the smoke detectors were going off for like 2 hours while we were trying to find the cause of it. This video saved us a lot of irritation. Thank you
We just had a carbon monoxide alarm go off and it was true… had fire department here , police , EMTs and the whole thing. Luckily we were all safe , had furnace serviced and all is good. After that, one of the alarms kept chirping and I couldn’t get it to stop! This video was an Excellent excellent video , worked like a charm. I followed this step by step , Killed the power to my whole house because I didn’t know which switch handled that smoke alarm. My wife got pissed off like I didn’t know what I was doing but this worked so well I am very grateful for this video - Thank You!!!! Amen god bless ! Lol
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ALL OF THESE STEPS IF IT’S A SIMPLE BATTERY CHANGE! Take the old battery out. Hold the TEST button for thirty seconds (wear ear plugs or cotton in your ears if you need to because the detector is going to alarm loudly while you hold the button). After holding the TEST button for thirty seconds, put your new battery in. Voila! Enjoy the quiet! This is a good video for a bigger problem or stubborn detector. But 90 percent of the time just do what i suggested.
Thank you. I was looking for a comment like this. Majority of the time I thought it’s chirping because the batteries just need to be replaced. Do I really need to go flip the circuit breakers to change the batteries? I betting that I don’t need to remove the alarm from the ceiling and disconnect electrical wires being that the piece to access the batteries is easily accessible. Will I be electrocuted just changing the battery? Is all that required to reset it? I’m confused.
Thank you. I could not get the harness off but when you said counter clockwise I knew which way to keep trying. Finally at 5am in the morning I got it unplugged .
Using my DC voltmeter, I like to measure the voltage of the 9 Volt batteries I replace in the smoke detector. My latest chirping smoke detector was below 8 Volts. Once I replaced that one, all is well. I find that closing doors isolating units helps to locate the offending unit.
HERES THE SOLUTION: THIS THING WAS PISSING ME OFF ALL MORNING. FIRST TURN OF THE SMOKE ALARM FROM MAINS. NEXT TAKE OF THE COVER BY USING A FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER TO WEDGE IT OPEN. FINALY REMOVE THE BATTERY FROM THE COVER AND CHUCK THE WHOLE THING IN THE BIN.
Thanks for this video. You’ve saved my ear drums. My alarm was beeping for 3 hours and all I had to do was unplug 2 out of my 5 detectors and it silenced the alarms for the time being.
Just looked this video up at 1am last night because the first night I came home from a trip my smoke detector starts beeping and I couldn't figure out how to unplug it. I didn't turn off the circut breaker I just pulled that sucker out, took the battery out, and stuffed it in a closet so I couldn't hear the chirping it made even after I unplugged it, worked like a charm.
Why do all the comment including mine say it woke you up at 3am? Thanks smoke alarm. Now my dog is shaking and despite 3 battery changes you still beep!
Thank you so much for this information. I was going batty trying to figure out what to do after I changed the batteries AND IT STILL BEEPED. This worked perfectly.

Woken at 4am to the chirp! It literally waited for me to return from a week away, and the waited for my husband to go on a business trip to wake me at 4am. "If you don't like video, give it 2 dislikes." Love it! I'll give your method a try. Smoke detector is beeping 3 times for about a minute randomly throughout the day.
Can one of these types of alarms malfunction and go off and set off the other 3? One was going off and then the two others would start. I disconnected the first one and now the other two are quiet. We don't have gas appliances in our neighborhood, all electric. I don't think this model alarm (the same as mine) detects CO2 anyway. Any advice?
It's cos at night, the house temps drop by few degrees which causes discharge on the battery. Once temps warm up, it goes back to normal. Then at night, same annoying noise till u replace the battery or the whole unit.
Its an annoying beep I'll give you that much. It's a stretch to call him a life saver unless you have issues dealing with the occasional anomalies in your life.

Hi, the Specs say that the front-loading sliding battery door makes it easier to change the battery without removing the smoke alarm from the mounting bracket. So can I just slide the door and replace the battery? How do I reset it after that?
My family's is like that. We usually turn it around a bit so it's loose and then we open the battery door and then just put the new battery in there, twist it so it's tightly sealed to how it was before, then we hold the test button down for 10 seconds, (U may have to hold it down longer till 30 seconds, depends on the alarm you have) and bam the alarm is fixed and it doesn't chirp. It worked for us, but all smoke alarms are different, so you may have to try a different method. Also for my family, we never turn the power off for the alarm, but again just cause it works for my family, doesn't mean it'll work for everyone.
