I have 5 First Alert units with fresh batteries and they periodically beep - loudly - usually 3 times. Not a "low battery chirp". Tonight 3 decided to go in sequence 🤬.

Your comment was helpful. Didn't know about holding the button down for at least 10 secs after removing the battery. Went to the store at 7 am to get new 9v batteries. Reset the disk by holding the button down for 10 secs. Put the brand new battery in. The disk still shows a flashing red signal, even tho the battery is brand new. The chirping is still happening every 10 seconds and its coming from behind the unit in the ceiling. Ugg. This happened (of course) on Friday night, so the condo people won't be back until Monday. Meanwhile, the chirping from inside the ceiling continues. I need to find another place to kill time the rest of the weekend until Monday. (In all honesty, I think I had some kind of power surge last night that might have messed up the unit)

We just had a carbon monoxide alarm go off and it was true… had fire department here , police , EMTs and the whole thing. Luckily we were all safe , had furnace serviced and all is good. After that, one of the alarms kept chirping and I couldn’t get it to stop! This video was an Excellent excellent video , worked like a charm. I followed this step by step , Killed the power to my whole house because I didn’t know which switch handled that smoke alarm. My wife got pissed off like I didn’t know what I was doing but this worked so well I am very grateful for this video - Thank You!!!!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ALL OF THESE STEPS IF IT’S A SIMPLE BATTERY CHANGE! Take the old battery out. Hold the TEST button for thirty seconds (wear ear plugs or cotton in your ears if you need to because the detector is going to alarm loudly while you hold the button). After holding the TEST button for thirty seconds, put your new battery in. Voila! Enjoy the quiet! This is a good video for a bigger problem or stubborn detector. But 90 percent of the time just do what i suggested.

Thank you. I was looking for a comment like this. Majority of the time I thought it’s chirping because the batteries just need to be replaced. Do I really need to go flip the circuit breakers to change the batteries? I betting that I don’t need to remove the alarm from the ceiling and disconnect electrical wires being that the piece to access the batteries is easily accessible. Will I be electrocuted just changing the battery? Is all that required to reset it? I’m confused.

Using my DC voltmeter, I like to measure the voltage of the 9 Volt batteries I replace in the smoke detector. My latest chirping smoke detector was below 8 Volts. Once I replaced that one, all is well. I find that closing doors isolating units helps to locate the offending unit.

I didn't turn off the circut breaker I just pulled that sucker out, took the battery out, and stuffed it in a closet so I couldn't hear the chirping it made even after I unplugged it, worked like a charm.

    • @daniboy4153

My family's is like that. We usually turn it around a bit so it's loose and then we open the battery door and then just put the new battery in there, twist it so it's tightly sealed to how it was before, then we hold the test button down for 10 seconds, (U may have to hold it down longer till 30 seconds, depends on the alarm you have) and bam the alarm is fixed and it doesn't chirp. It worked for us, but all smoke alarms are different, so you may have to try a different method. Also for my family, we never turn the power off for the alarm, but again just cause it works for my family, doesn't mean it'll work for everyone.

Thank you so much my damn smoke alarm is a hunk of junk and is definitely not properly functioning, I know these chirps are for my safety but they are the worst when you’re out of batteries and just wanna sleep

Took it down, took the battery out, held the button down, put a new battery back in. No dice. So I disconnected it from the wire, took the battery out, went back to bed... and now the goddamn hole in my ceiling is beeping.
Meanwhile it's 2:30 in the goddamn morning and my family has shit to do tomorrow. But here we all are, wide awake.

I have the same smoke dectector, it would only chirp at night and I couldn’t sleep, when I got it off it not not hard wired! The cords were covered, so I just threw away the battery because it was dying and I don’t have any things that could cause fire in my room
