- Ep. 111 A DOG, WILDFLOWERS & MOSAICS! What could be better?!?
This week kicks off with (surprise, surprise) some sunflowers! These are going behind the white picket fence. My plan is loose - one main taller, bigger, brighter sunflower and using an odd number. I used tracing paper to lay them out and then transfer with black carbon paper and a ball point pen. Then I go over it with black Sharpie so I can see it. The centers of the sunflowers are made with a textured brown stained glass. Each center is nipped and nipped. Then they are nipped some more until I have a pleasing oval shape. Most of the sunflowers are facing the fence because sunflowers en masse generally face the same way. I have one at 3/4 and some overlapping to add variety. I'm using Weldbond as my adhesive. The substrate is birch plywood.
Next, I get to work on Chester, a little black and white dog commission. I finish up the blackest black on his body to the left using both rough rolled glass with a bit of texture and smooth black glass for interest. When using feather cuts, it really works best to work from one side to another and not leave "pockets" to fill in. So I cut a variety of gray shades so I can work on his head. As I fill in the glass, his personality starts to shine through! He seems mischievous! I follow the lay of his fur for the direction of the glass. Small gaps that are left in his fur will be filled with black grout and will disappear in the end so no worries there. This substrate is 1/4" MDF. I prepped both substrates in this video: studio.youtube...
I FEEL THE NEED TO MAKE ANOTHER SUNFLOWER. (Is there something wrong with me???) This one is the amazing and beautiful Fire Catcher Sunflower. I use black Apoxie Sculpt as my adhesive and start with brown filati in the center. Then I add a few yellow noodles with red and yellow smalti for the petals. I finish up with green and blue filati for the foliage and sky. In the end I show it next to my Velvet Queen Sunflowers, which are close enough and are blooming!
Then I return to the wildflowers, showing the sunflowers I worked on late at night. I add more of the red, a couple more yellow California poppies on the left, cosmos on the right and a swoop of the tiny white flowers which will add a bit of sparkle to the composition. I like to dip and place small pieces like these in Weldbond adhesive using tweezers. An index card is a nice way to keep it tidy and wipe off excess glue. We take one last look at the mosaic. That's it!
Thanks for watching!

The flower garden is going to be so amazing! And Chester’s eyes are so realistic I keep expecting him to blink!
I hope so! Can't wait to see these two finished!
Lovely progress - excited to see how you do the background greens and fence as everything is soooo tiny!
You and me both! Maybe the mosaic elves will come do it while I sleep.
I can't wait to see these projects finished, especially the wildflower one! Just lovely xxx
Thanks! Me too.
Chester is looking so very cute esp his eyes. The sunflowers beyond the fence are a lovely addition. Can't wait to see it done. And the Fire Sunflower pendant - a la grande 😍😍😍😍
Thank you! 😊
I just hate when these end. So much fun and learning! ❤️
Thanks so much, Carol!
Oh my goodness!! I have been watching for some time now and just had to comment today! You are such a deeply talented, true artist. I am so inspired every time I watch you... not only by what you create, but also with that divine sparkle you clearly have. Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent and knowledge with us. And your musical choices are fantastic! May I ask you what music you were playing on the video while you were drawing the sunflowers behind the fence? It really touched my heart today. I must tell you, I don't ever remember looking forward to Mondays like I do now! Thank you so, so much, Julie!
You are too kind! Thank you for your comments. The music is from Epidemic Sound. That song is the instrumental version of "If I wrote you a song." I think it is by Melanie Bell.
I’m amazed with Chester . I have a hard enough time panting a black do and to watch you make hm come alive in glass is fascinating. The flower garden is going to be incredible!
I hope so!
Thank u.beautiful
You are so welcome!
Lovely to see your process for the wildflowers - I wouldn’t have a clue how to start with all those fiddly bits! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Oh, and you have a perfect speaking voice. I couldn't do it if u didn't.
Again, thank you Sherri!
First thought when ended: nooooo! It's over! Have to wait to next Monday now, can't wait! The parts that I really enjoyed watching the most were the speeds of Chester's face and the sunflowers behind the fence. I also liked the part where you walked us through deciding the glass for the middle of the sunflowers for texture, and was glad you highlighted the texture difference on Chester again and explained the black grout which would mask the holes you left. Also... really glad I saw the glass popping off your tweezers. Happens to me all the time when I go scrimmaging across the room. So.
Glad I'm not the only one! Keep it up! Can't wait to see your commissions done so we get to see the next masterpiece you come up with.
Thanks for the feedback! Sometimes the video just doesn't show what I see in person.
Super ! :-)
Thank you! Cheers!
U do beautiful detail work. I've watched most of your videos. Im 62 and really started getting into doing mosaics. I've done 2 tables so far for my daughter's. Came out great I think. What kind and size tweezers do you use? I need some. Thanks!
I have a whole set from Amazon for around $12. They have a little foldable case. I like the kind with the super sharp pointy tips.
Beautiful as usual! Question, are those white spots in the eyes clear glass that we are seeing as white?
No. They are little white highlights!
