  • This used oil testing report is from over 3 years of use in a 2.0 Ecoboost engine noting the wear from new until the current mileage. A great history of how the engine handles the viscosity and miles. Plus it also notes the coolant intrusion via the EGR Cooler and the Fuel dilution that it also experiences from use. Multiple issues going on at the same time.

Mact youre right on the money as usual. All these ultralight oils are death to engines and moving up the viscosity scale is the thing to do esp on turbo engines. You da man dude.

The funny thing is 5W-30 is actually pretty thick now that we are using 0W-8, 0W-12, 0W-16, 0W-20, etc, but I definitely can't argue with someone getting better results on their vehicle and usage conditions with a thicker oil!
A different vehicle used in a different way in a different environment may produce completely different results.

Change EcoBoost oil every 3,000 with full synthetic if you drive mainly short trips / around town driving. 4,000 if you drive mainly highway. EcoBoost engines produce heavy fuel dilution regardless of weight. Thank you for sharing these numbers.

yes but testing also shows heavier oil reduces metal wear and IMO reduces LSPI due to heavier oil weight and increases the flash point.

@@MACTFordEdge have you ever done oil analysis on the 5w40 Valvoline Euro?

Could just be the change in chemistry between the brands or the specifications the oils meet.

Hello Mact! I have been watching many of your videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have a question and maybe you can help me. I have a 2014 Ford Edge awd and have always used good quality fluids in the cooling system. Problem is now with only 82k km the water pump has failed. It was a big surprise for me, as I take care of the car and do all the preventative maintenance. Do you think this would be expected since the car has low mileage? I'm from Brazil and I'm the second owner, the first owner did all preventive maintenance at the dealership

Coolant and Synthetic oils are the best defense. However yes the water pump can fail earlier. Best bet is to replace the waterpump, chain, tensioners guides and VCT's as they will most likely have metal in them. The phasers should be alright. Once done run the engine about 25 miles with cheap oil and filter. Change the oil Run it again about 100 miles then change the oil for a synthetic oil with a good filter. Should be good to go. USE motorcraft parts.

MACT, would you recomend going to a full synthetic oil in the 2012 2.o ecoboost with 145,000 miles on it ? I bought the car with 104,252 miles on it. I need to get at least 100,000 more miles on it. Thanks for your advice 73 de KF4QIC

I originally found your channel by searching triax oil which I’ve been using in my bmw for over a year now. I’m curious why you are no longer using triax.

Mostly because I chose to use many brands of oils. Obligated to no oil and thus not a paid sponsor of any oil. Use it test and move on.

Wondering why the numbers you’re reading off don’t match the chart in the video?

Because you just pointed out I uploaded the wrong chart. Thanks for pointing that out. I try hard to be organized but sometime I have too many irons in the fire. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have a 2013 2.0. How did you know you needed the PCM reprogrammed? I have heavy fuel dilution even at 1000 miles after oil change. Not lab testing but it’s pretty dirt and smells of heavy fuel. In comparison, my girlfriend’s 2008 Ford Fusion 2.3 with 4,500 miles on the oil is far more transparent and doesn’t smell of fuel at all.

Ford had a TSB on the issue with my 2019 so they reprogramed the injectors under warranty.
