I plan on a 10W-30 dexos rated synthetic for a 2021 Ford EcoSport 2.0 SE AWD in the warm months and a Super Tech 5W-20 synthetic in the winter. The reason is that the closer the two numbers on an oil are, the more base oil and less viscosity improvers (polymers) there will be. VII viscosity improvers are far less robust than the actual base oil. They shear down and evaporate much easier and quicker.
The reason for deviating from the recommended oil in warm months is that this vehicle is an extreme fuel/oil diluter. Both 10W-30 and 5W-20 are the most robust oils for their respective viscosity.

would you consider running a 0w30? it has good flow properties when cold and the same protection at higher temperatures.

My highest metal counts resulted from 0W20 oil. No I will never use anything rated 0.

    I wish you compared the 5-20 #'s against the 10-30 #'s

I do have early testing for 5W20 for the same engine but a much lower mileage which bears to say the older mileage test results are better than the new lower mileage test results

So the advantage to switching to 10w30 is better protection since it's a heavier weight im assuming? Are there any disadvantages from the oil not getting to the upper engine as fast? Is this suggesting Ford wants the engine to wear faster so more money will be spent in repairs? Just curious to hear any reasoning. Thx

The thinner oils are so they can make thier fuel economy claims. 5w30 is best for most vehicles but you will see a small reduction in mpg.

any 0W oil is too thin and the only reason for thinner oils are for fuel economy.

@fastfocus2005 interesting info, makes perfect sense. I assume most don't care about excessive wear if they are getting a new vehicle every 3-5 years. The next persons problem. Looks like I'm switching to 10w30 for longevity. Thanks for sharing that info! 🍻

I am using 5w40 Pennzoil Platinum Euro without any problems in my 2020 2.0 turbo Edge. I want to protect the turbo and engine and the 5w30 that ford recommends is on the low end of the 30 weight scale, again this is for fuel economy, they do not care about engine failures after you are out of warranty. I am still getting the same mpg, 25 as before. At temp it is the difference of 12 viscosity vs 14 viscosity.

@@jefferysurratt5650 thanks for sharing your info. I have an oil change coming up, so I'm switching. I honestly thought the lighter oil was used to get it to flow faster to the upper engine (cams/valves/etc), not for fuel economy. But I'm not surprised that Ford had different reasons, not for longevity. I'm switching this change and not looking back. 🍻

My daughters new civic calls for 0w-20. Just way too thin but I don’t want to void the warranty. Should I change it more often? Currently do every 5k

I run 5w30 in my civic and runs like a champ. Car calls for 0w20. It's stupidly thin.

@@dontderockmerizz3211 It don't matter. The dealership or whoever will never know the viscosity of the oil in the car unless you tell them. 0w20 is NOT an engineering decision and will not benefit the a car in anyway. It is used help with gas mileage and emission that is barley noticeable. The engine will last longer with 5w30.
