    Excellent review ! AMS is more true to narrow gauge proportions. I’m running a logging RR with all AMS logging cars and a very nice feature of them is the fact you can get sequence car numbers, nice touch !

      Thanks very much!
      Sounds great! Yes, the AMS models are just really nicely made.

    Here in the US Bachman is thought of as lower quality by some customers. Some think they are fine but I think you proved the point. Good video. Loved the tone comparison.

      Yeah, well they have certainly improved over time and while some items are very good, they are no match for AMS and Accucraft, (even when they actually do some details better such as caboose interior). They have shown the real struggle of getting quality and affordability in this scale, hence why they haven't really done it for years now.
      As for the tone, well you've gotta test these things. 😂

    I just received my AMS high Cube boxcar. It’s amazing. Very detailed. Perfect size. I would like to see comparison to USA Trains boxcar and AMS.

      Nice! AMS are great.
      The only USA Trains item I have is a long caboose. It is a smaller scale than AMS. I do have some Bachmann Big Hauler boxcars, which are about the same scale as USA Trains.

    AMS better detailed and to scale so it seems according to your information. Great to know! Great little tutorial on the differences between the 2.

      Yep, that's right. The Bachmann seems to be modeled on a different type, and a common complaint of Bachman Spectrum is that they sit too high on the wheel trucks.
      Thanks!

    An excellent review, my main man! Fantastic! I saw this upload on the F Scale Facebook Group. Such a photogenic voice you have as well. Perfect for commentary on such subjects. I’ve subscribed and I am currently building my garden railroad in my home state of South Australia also. We’re currently clearing parts of the backyard for the railroad. Once we’ve got more things done I hope to do my first garden railroad update video for my channel. The railroad is going to be a mix between narrow gauge and standard gauge operations and I plan to create makeshift rails if I can to model the dual gauge yards seen on the Denver & Rio Grande Western. A small addition but one that would make dual gauge operations be more prototypical in appearance rather than an operational aspect. We’ve got plenty of dual and triple gauge turnouts and track to model from here in South Australia, so if push comes to shove, I can get scale measurements from that, to get an idea of what goes where. Anyhoo, I’ll let you go for now, and I’m looking forward to more videos from you. Check my channel out when you have time, you’re more than welcome to, my friend. Take care and keep well over there. Regards, Caleb

      Hi Caleb. Thank you so much for your message! That's kind of you to compliment my voice as that's something that took a little time to work on. Changing microphone type a couple of videos in helped a lot.
      Your plans for your railroad sound very interesting, and that's true Australia has quite a collection of gauges going on. It's actually been a plan of mine since I was a small boy to visit Australia. My Dad had the TV series Great Railway Journeys Of The World (made in the early 80s) recorded on video and I watched the Sydney to Perth episode over and over. So riding the Indian Pacific has always been on my bucket list.
      I have subscribed to your channel too. Wow, you have a lot of videos! I'll flick through with interest when I have the time.
      Thanks again Caleb. See you around. Cheers!

    It's not a matter of "something wrong" with the Bachmann car, just that the Bachmann car is not a model of the D&RGW 3000-series boxcar despite how it's lettered. My memory's shaky on its prototype, but I believe one of the California narrow gauge lines. (Pacific Coast Railway?)

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  3 роки тому +1

      Well, you could say that with the 3000 series lettering it's wrong. 😂
      Yeah, I'm not an expert. Someone on facebook suggested the Bachmann may be based on F&CC, but wasn't certain.
      Thanks for the comment! 👍

    I’m new to your channel, also a big D&RGW fan. Do you have a walk around video of your railroad?

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Рік тому +1

      That's great! Thanks for joining me.
      Umm,... not as such, but you do pretty much see all of it in my videos. It's only a temporary setup: an oval around the garden (if you can call it a garden!) and then a track going behind the shed. The shed track has tighter curves so my K-27 locomotive and AMS Jackson Sharp coaches can't go that way.
      I am looking (it's been two years now!) for a house with a big enough garden to do a fully landscaped layout, hopefully with an indoor section. So what I'm doing on this channel, I'm only just getting started.
      Cheers Christopher! 👍

    Well presented comparison. Shame the Bachmann one seems incorrect. I have an AMS one.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks very much. The AMS cars are really very nice, but it seems the Bachmann was based on one from another railroad.

    the Bachmann sits higher on its bogies because its a cheaper option to manufacture.... [ and is reflected in the retail price]

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah. The van itself is bigger too though, but it seems to based on a different railroad and then just marked up as a Rio Grande one. (Being cheap).

    I’ve been down on Bachman for years. My gripe is their engines are weak; they just break down. Any scale, any era, they are just junk. I’ve been off Bachman engines for decades. You couldn’t pay me to take one.
    However, after the acoustics comparison I am seriously reconsidering.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  6 місяців тому

      Haha! It's all in the tone.
      Yeeeah, Bachmann aren't a scratch on Accucraft and AMS. But, I do like them. Tank cars are nice, cabooses have interior. The locomotives, I do like all of mine. Detail isn't great on my Eureka, but the much newer Raton is a vast improvement. My K-27 has a clunk (which I'll look to fix one day) but I've been lucky that they otherwise have no issues. I seem to be the only person who hasn't suffered a broken nylon gear!
      I do keep an eye half open for Accucraft locomotives, but they'd be more than I'd like to spend right now. But, ya never know.

      @@ThatBIGTRAINGuy they just won’t run. I have a custom painted Shay. It is truly incredible looking. But she won’t run because of stripped gears. Bachman promised us they fixed their problems with this engine. They had a VHS tape to tell us how to apply their proprietary lubes. This engine was to be the end of their crappy gear problems. I ran that engine once. It was fine when I put it away in the box it came in. The next time I took it out of the box the gears were stripped. Then they sold us new improved trucks which allegedly solve their crappy gear problem which was already allegedly resolved. I did buy the new improved trucks. But I haven’t tried them yet. I guess I better hurry because Bachman gears are so inferior, they can strip just by sitting in the box.
      People do tell they aren’t as bad as the old Big Hauler 10-wheelers and that 1st run of Shays. But I heard that story before. I haven’t bought a Bachman in many years.
