    I suspect they realized "router" is a more recognized term so it's easier to market to people who aren't already familiar with Ubiquiti products.

    I bought all my UniFi equipment after the dream lineup so I have always had to use the SSO. I frankly don’t mind it. In some ways I almost prefer it.

    Seeing throughput on the fly can be extremely useful, especially for spotting degraded performance at a glance.

    UniFi connect looks like an upcoming smart home line from ubiquiti. Check out early access community integrating LEDs already.
    As far as the name, it seems like they are catering to the general public that knows their home network equipment as just a modem and a router.

    2 ports of PoE seems very useful to me, it makes sense for not-very-pro prosumer/home users, I think. I'm only likely to direct-attach a couple of PoE devices anyway (a couple of access points) cameras will come off a switch in my attic or something, I can inject PoE there), and I'm gonna use at least some of the ports for non-PoE stuff anyway (my PC/office room, the switch in my TV cabinet), so it's a good balance of keeping the cost down vs providing some PoE. My service comes into the centre of my house anyway, so the AP there works perfectly etc... as long as this device can do VLANs, then this will do me nicely until I have enough equipment to maybe need an UDM Pro or something one day

    The Dream Machine Pro - Special Edition will probably get rebranded Dream Router Pro when released from early access

    Hopefully they've fixed the PPPOE issues, that's impacting the Dream Machine and Dream Machine Pro. Leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when they release new hardware where the older hardware still has numerous bugs or missing functions

    They should’ve updsted the USG first. I like that form. Fits most set ups. It’s just the current one’s specs is not very impressive

    • @ApolloSevan
      @ApolloSevan 3 роки тому

      If I had to guess It would be Ubiquity is going to quietly retire the USG. They seem to be pushing the ‘Dream’ lineup pretty hard.

  • @MatthewN8OHU
    @MatthewN8OHU 3 роки тому

    Honestly? I don't really have enough information yet to make a realistic analysis of the hardware. However, I'm suspecting that it might signal that there are plans to make some significant upgrades to the rest of the Dream Machine line as well.

    One thing is puzzling me: considering the Dream Router will do much more than the UDM, isn't the pricing point (about 1/3 of the price of the UDM) a bit intriguing? Are we missing something?

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  2 роки тому

      I think that pricing may be because it’s not finished. Because they expect it to have issue at its current state. But I really hope not! $79 is a STEAL!

    Can I buy 2 and mesh them? And plug 1 camera into each one?

  • @samnangtep400
    @samnangtep400 3 роки тому

    I am guessing they are calling it a UDR bc there is no mention of it being a security gateway. Losing that feature makes it just a router and not a security gateway or “Dream Machine” anymore.

  • @unvjustintime1
    @unvjustintime1 3 роки тому +1

    What do you mean when you bring the flex HD with you when you travel? As in the destination has a POE port for you to already connect and you run the unit in bridge mode?
    What about with family when you don’t have access to a ethernet port no less POE. Extend a wireless network doesn’t work because SSID would not be your own. Just thinking how I would use this in my travels with access to wifi only via a fios all in one router etc

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  3 роки тому +2

      I bring the Poe injector with me and just plug it in. It’s just so I don’t have to plug someone else’s ssid into all of my devices. Most hotels I stay in have an Ethernet port and for the ones that don’t, I just don’t use it. When doing big installs, it’s nice for me to have Wi-Fi before I put in all of the customers access points.

    How would you do a setup where you're unable to run cables for example people renting. Is it possible to use a UDM at the modem (ISP location) for control and main uplink to mesh network with heap of FlexHD access points? Can you daisy chain the FlexHD to extend range for outdoor entertainment area and shed?

    Do you know if we can add a Unifi POE switch to the dream router to expand the port capability?

    • @MillerTechnicalServices
      @MillerTechnicalServices  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you can. It’s a regular unifi network. You can even add more NVR units.

    I live in Florida. No basement or attic. My modem and udm live in a little cube with a door that I got from IKEA that sits on the dresser in the bedroom. Out of site of guests, and it doesn’t bother me.

    Considering the UDM still has buggy unfinished software, I wouldn't rough this new UDR. In fact I'm selling my UDM and AP point as they cause big ping spikes on my Series X, going to try Amplifi Alien instead.

    Won't be useful for me as a msp. Recording video to SD as a expansion solution seems rather horrible.. ubiquiti can make cool stuff but they also make weird choices. Id be thrilled if I could just order what I need anymore, instead it's all back ordered

    Totally agree Dream Router sounds boring and seems like they are going backwards. Unless they are going to still sell the dream machine and the dream router. I am not sure who would buy the dream machine when you consider the new functionality of the dream router. I would suggest marketing fall on their sword and find a way to retain the dream machine name with all the new features.

      The DM will likely drop in price to about $229 while the DR will likely be in the $300s. But I anticipate they will continue to sell the DM alongside the DR.
