I am at nearly the bottom of monthly income. But one of the things i need for my disability is a home network. Im fixing its problems now. Most of my routers and switches and cabling comes from goodwill. I have N networking, and 10/100 cabling. But it works fine most of the time. Even with 2 or 3 guests at once, i really see no congestion so far. The only thing i discovered is i must have multiple routers to be reliable.

This is a great walkthrough. We are in escrow on a pretty sprawling home (3000sq ft single story). I bought 2 Wifi 6 LR's and really hope that does the trick. I may add 2 of the in-walls at some point too, if needed. Thanks for this detailed walkthrough!

Awesome devices, great 101 on Unifi!
I used multiple 48 port 500watt POE switches (stacked with SFP+ and 10gb Gbic's) , the older but powerfull XG server to manage all devices from one main location, and UAP Pro's for corporate use for aproximatly 40 locations.
Also the client wanted to have multiple Vlan's, port mirroring (the Cisco SPAN port), Polycom Voip phones and a guest environment for ther customers.
    In conclusion:
The company wanted first to invest $150.000 for Cisco switches + Cisco Meraki which isnt manageble for everyone, and since Unifi is affordable and 10 times easier to implement.
Less waste of time and on the otherhand they didn't waste a shocking $100.000 in hardware. The warrenty/licenses where 1/5 of the total price that should have been added.
Unifi is absolute whipping the floor with the compettitors!

it will not only be simple and secure to set up but also easy for the customer to manage rather than needing enterprise level when they are scared that they did something wrong every time the power is cut out, it just goes through the boot sequence and chugs along just like the standard modems that is sent out to home users with new ISP's which is quite helpful when you're wanting references.

Thanks for video. My experience for novice user setting up UDM Pro can be a little tricky and down right painful for some. I was lucky where my ISP modem had no issues providing internet access to UDM Pro. However I had issues adopting my past UniFi equipment. I had to do a restore from old backup. . Also I heard many users having issues with updates. be sure to disable updates. you don't want to wake up one day and everything is down. I setup some WiFi 6 lite access points. so far so good very reliable. make backups and keep a log of what changes you make.

Informative video. The only point I would contest is 4:23. Wi-Fi 6 isn't only important for internet access speeds but also for communication between devices on the same network. A good example would be someone running a Plex server and streaming high bitrate (50Mbps+) video to multiple Wi-Fi devices. One of those streams is hard enough for 802.11ac to handle. Add a second stream and you'll watch your streams come to a grinding hault. 802.11ax, while not perfect, handles this scenario much better.

Though my newly build house is killing WiFi like a madman, have to put up access points literally on every floor and might add a second on the main floor. Nothing negative about Ubiquiti, all neighbors with regular ISP modems are barely sending signal to this house.

I would like to add that wifi 6 has benefits outside of higher transfer speeds, such as more efficiently improvements in data transfer and power consumption. Which could show improvements in your utility bill and increase battery life of portable devices that use the WiFi, also better high client management, which will come in handy if you plan to have lots of smart home tech, which most devices will use the WiFi

If I purchase the Switch 8 PoE (150w) and 2x Access Point WiFi 6 Pro...from my business class cable modem can I plug the WAN in one of the 8 ports so that when the APs are plugged in the other ports they get an IP address? Or, do I still need to use my business modem to my Netgear router and router to the switch for the AP to work and get IPs?

Use case could be: Cam outside of the house, you will secure this "cable" but have also access to this device from your private network or mobile app. That would be awesome :-) Thanks !

WiFi-6 will not only make a difference in the maximum speed but also a solution in interferance with other WiFi networks nearby and the throughput for multiple users on the same accesspoint by the use of MU-MIMO and OFDMA.
So WiFi-6 will make the difference, but you will need to have WiFi-6 capable devices.

I am not a tech guy and it would be good if you can explain more on the set up of the guest network and the relevant firewall. Completely no idea of the importance of it.

For a simple guest network where you might have people over at your house or guests visiting a business, the firewall rules I showed are pretty much all you need. And yes, with cloud connect I am managing networks in Virginia, California, Toronto, Florida, basically all over the place. No need to port forward anything. Just sign in with your Single Sign On account and you're good to go. Hope this helps!

The UDM pro has a 1gb backplane for all 8 ports. Meaning all 8 ports share a 1Gbps link total. I’d use the SFP to connect your PoE switch to the UDM as that link will be a dedicated 10Gbps not shared. I still love my UDM pro though but just use those 8 ports for non bandwidth intensive IoT stuff like Hue and SmartThings.

There's something that I don't understand: Why you created a separate network for the VAP (guest wlan) when you can create that from the new UI, which already assigns policies related to a guest network? The prices are going to be very similar so that makes no difference, and unifi won't work with my Hikvision cameras and NVR. The only nice thing i can see is all your APs are inside the DMP, instead of having to go into each one individually, but to me thats so minor it's only a side note.

@@viljoendurand no, no one ever responded. So I built my own mesh system. I built a pfsense firewall, then put an AP on each floor in the same theory as having mesh routers, but with the APs I have more control over them. And I had my house wired with rj45 and cat6 during the build.

How do you know what the heat map will look like for a new construction house. I have no idea how many ap's and what model to buy. Can you help?

Just wondering. If the AP access is as good as passing through two floors, installing an AP access on the ceiling of first floor should cover both basement and second floor theoretically.

The disco music playing on your video made it difficult to understand the dialogue. It was a bit like listening to a conference in a nightclub. A pity. It sounded interesting.

    Great job. Clear clean instructions.
    I used it on a USG-Pro-4 , cloud key and a UniFi Switch 16 POE-150W.
I have successfully blocked all internvlan communication and so on.
I don’t have any Ubiquiti access points.
    I have 2 questions.
    1. I wish to block internal communication between devices inside the guest network?
    2. Is there a way to limit speeds via mac accress or IP without using a Ubiquiti AP?
I know this can be handled on the Ubiquiti APs
I am looking or a firewall rule or a setting without using ubiquity APs.

      1. On your guest network, make sure the “Guest Network” checkbox is ticked. It might say “Apply Guest Policies”. That automatically blocks traffic between devices on that network.
      2. If you’re using the old user interface, go to “Users” in the side bar, then create a user and set your speed limits. Then go to your network that you wish to be throttled and in the user drop down menu, select your user group. This is the only way I know of doing this in Unifi, honestly not sure if it only works with their access points or can work with just the router, but it’s worth a try.

@Miller Technical Services Thanks for the reply. It is a great answer but it applies to the Unifi AP,s. The AP,s usually do this job of client isolation and speed throttling. I use a bunch of small home routers running the tomato firmware. I have used the DDWRT ip tables firewall rules to stop users from pinging the others. My issue is when a user plugs his or her laptop directly into the network. They can see everything within their vlan.

I’m very new to the home server/networking scene but the question I have is:
You said your wifi is only supposed to be 100 Mbps from your internet provider but you connected your switch to the Dream Machine with that big long-tipped cable that I thought you said was like for 1 or 10 Gigabit speeds. If you are only getting 100 Mbps from your ISP, why do you need to connect the switch to the Dream Machine with a cable that supports speeds hundreds or thousands of times faster? Wouldn’t you only need to use that funny looking cable if you were getting gigabit speeds from your ISP? Forgive my ignorance. I want to get these for my home but not sure what’s correct.

I used that as a demonstration of what you could do, not what you have to do. That funny cable is LC fiber and it is connected to another switch on the other side of my basement. I didn’t want a guide video to only show what I personally need for my trash internet connection.

Nice video, thanks! Summarises it nicely for me. Would the new UDM Pro SE replace the need for a PoE switch or you still recommend the switch even if we’d buy the UDM Pro SE?

looks good. i still get confused by the US rolling out gigabit in 2021, you can literally get 25Gbit Internet in Switzerland for 65$/month

Your country is the size of one of our smaller cities!, if that’s all we had to lay fiber for we would have been done years ago.

so the UDM pro can't power the APs? I have to buy the switch with PoE use them? in a 2,000sqft house, is the UDM pro good enough, or would I need to spend another ~400 for the switch?

I'm using a single Unifi AC-PRO access point and I am getting strange wifi speeds: 10 Mbps down, 90 Mbps up. I'm testing against a self hosted OpenSpeedTest server on LAN, so I know the issue with isolated to the Unifi AP. Any ideas why this would happen and can I get more symmetrical speeds?

I need your help please, so I am currently getting the optimum 8 gig service. Do I need to have the UDM pro run into my ubiquity enterprise switch do I even need the UDM switch? And I’m having one problem I’m able to set up everything and control everything from one computer but if I go to my upstairs computer, I’m not able to connect to the devices how do I fix that?

Hi I loved the video. I recently received a Unifi LR as a gift and our internet provider is coming to set up our service but I am wondering if we still need to get a router as they are only providing us with a zhone modem. If we do need a router what would you recommend. Hope you have a great day!
