  • The UniFi Dream Machine SE (model: UDM-SE) is the latest 1U form factor device running UniFi OS. On top of UniFi OS, you can run such applications as UniFi Network, UniFi Protect, Unifi Access, and UniFi Talk.
This model improves upon the original UDM-Pro by adding PoE to the switch ports, a 2.5Gbps WAN port, and an integrated 128GB SSD hard drive for Protect footage.
In this video I unbox the Dream Machine SE, take a look at its guts, and go through the initial setup.
For a full multi-series tutorial on how to set up the UniFi Dream Machines, see this playlist:

i just received mine the other day, migrating from a cloud key g2+ and USG was a breeze! backup and restore unifi controller and it automatically deleted the USG, migrated my switches and APs, and then backup/restore the protect app and BAM, cameras were back online. I didn't need to retain any footage off the system as it's just my house, so i'm very happy with how smooth that was.

Thanks for the breakdown video. Regarding your comment at 6:40, as an electronic hardware engineer I’ll attest that visual changes in a design don’t always mean an improvement (or at least what the end user would consider to be an improvement). Could have been done to reduce their costs (w/ or w/o affecting performance), to adapt to components on the older design becoming unavailable or obsolete, or maybe just for compatibility with the new motherboard. We often use different solder mask colors to help make the different versions more easily distinguishable. I know you didn’t mean your comment to be taken so literally, but I find that everyone all too often assume that “changes” are necessarily in their favor.

Chris, if you have a 1 gigabit or above WAN speed, the UDM-Pro tops at 930 Mbps (the missing 70 is for overhead). But there is a simple way to go beyond: buy a MikroTik S+RJ10 module and stick in SFP+ port 9 which can be configured as WAN2 interface. The MikroTik module connects at the SFP+ (UDMP) side at 10 Gbps and at the ethernet side it can connect to 1, 2.5, 5 or 10 Gbps speeds. Ubiquiti doesn't have a module which can do that.
I have a cable modem with a 2.5 Gbps LAN port and my gigabit subscription is topped at 1070 Mbps. If I run a speedtest with this MikroTik moduele, I'm able to reach the 1000 Mbps (and a little bit above). So, there goes the reason for choosing a UDM-SE for that reason.
And... if you want the get the maximum out of your setup, isn't it better to use a separate switch? I guess if the UDM-Pro doesn't have to do all the switching, is has more resources available for routing and controlling.

Truth, I've done exactly this, just with a different SFP+ module. I did have issues with failover to the 1GbE port though. @Robert Webbe have they resolved that issue where the WAN2 failover to WAN1 was sketch

Is the 2.5G port on the UDM-SE still limited to 1Gbps from the SFP+ LAN port? I know the 8 port switch was limited to a max of 1Gbps to WAN, but not sure if you can go >1G from SFP+ LAN to the 2.5G WAN port. If not then no huge advantage for me to get the UDM-SE over the UDMP besides the POE for a few low traffic IoT devices.

I wouldn't expect anyone who would buy either UDM to use it as their main switch, they would add others. For me there's enough with the SE to justify the price.

Just got my UDM-SE yesterday. Pretty easy to setup. I migrated from the USG and UCK G2 Plus. Make sure they are all up to date and make and save a backup. When the UDM-SE wizard is finished, restore the backups. The only strange thing that happened is my original IP scheme was 192.168.200.XXX, and after I restored the backups, everything is now 192.168.1.XXX. This may have something to do with forgetting to remove the old UCK G2 from the console before restoring the backup to the UDM-SE. The other issue I had was the UDM-SE would not work or recognize a Seagate 8TB Hard Drive. The light remains yellow. I tested the drive and it appears to be ok. But it does work fine with an 8-year old 5TB drive.
I am noticing a substantial performance increase over the USG. Even Unifi Protect runs very fast and smooth now.

Hey Chris, great video! I just got mine setup, but I wanted to bring out to this group and anyone thinking of getting a SE, beware. On version 3.0.18 I believe, and had to power down to move it to another area and whamo, it does not boot back up. It doesn't even allow to go into recover mode. I did a search on this issue and it is happening to many folks. It does appear to be a "bug" of some sort, but whether that is hardware based or software, I dont know. Right now it is a brick, and from the comments I have seen, the only resolution is to leave it powered off for a bit, then unplug all, hold in reset when powering back on and get into recover mode. I havent tried this yet, but thought i would bring this out because for the price I paid on it, and Ubiquiti's lack of support in helping resolve it, I would advise to stay away from the SE, at least for now. Unless someone on here has a good solution that they have run across. Was really liking having 8 PoE ports too. Thanks for all your videos though Chris, very informative!!

About the display controller board: They've changed from a 10+ year old microcontroller to a newer part that's far faster, but with less built-in flash, thus the 256Mb flash chip on the board. Both have USB capability, but maybe they did not implement it on the old one or it's only available via pads on the PCB.

An advantage of this over Ubiquiti's low end POE switches is that you get more total power. For example the USW-16-PoE is limited to 42W, slightly less than the USW-Lite-16-PoE for $100 more. The older 150W switches would be great, but they are never in stock. The UDM-SE should be able to do 150W.

    • @TD-zc4zi
      @TD-zc4zi 2 роки тому

Yeah we opted for the older 150w PoE switch last year for the additional overhead for the same money

    • @slam5
      @slam5 11 місяців тому

I don't think either the SE should have 150W poe inside. 150W is a lot of power to generate inside such a small form factor and will generate a lot of heat. if the switch fails you always can replace it easily with another switch. if the udm fails it will be disastrous and expensive to replace the whole udm.

Thanks for the video, Chris! I have two questions after this video. Since the UXG is stuck in EA/Narnia indefinitely, can you turn off the internal function of the Network? Possibly if you go the business versus home use route, there is a set inform adoption, to can you maybe turn on SSH, and issue the set inform address?
Secondly, backplane speed? With a 10G SFP+ for LAN, it makes me think that with the same port on a switch, I can really get some speed by staying with an L2 network. The UniFi line has always been a bit lethargic in the internet thruput/speed test arena. Do you think that with a 2.5Gb WAN connection, you would be able to utilize all of the WAN (with or without IDS/IPS/DPI)? Unfortunately with of 80+ (Thanks to Reilly) UnifFi systems that I have deployed, I occasionally come across the habitual speed tester and I always get hammered.

I’m so ashamed to admit this - but that locking power cable almost makes me want to get one. I decided to set my UDMP near a window and not in a rack either. Predictably, my cat determined that the top of it was a great sleeping spot, which kinda horrified me (‘Airflow! Overheating! Bad Kitty!’) but my wife kinda talked me down a bit and assured me that if Mr. Cat would break it, she wouldn’t fuss about replacing it.
…and then he somehow figured out how to unplug the damn thing. Repeatedly. To the point now where if our WiFi conks out, the first thing I check is the cat and the power plug (other than the feline issue, the UDMP has been solid as a rock.)
I’m kinda rooting for him break it now, tbh…

To the best of my knowledge, it's not currently possible to use the SFP+ WAN port as WAN. Many people have been requesting this feature, and while Ubiquiti has not said "never / not possible", they haven't committed to saying this feature will eventually become available either.

I have the UDM-Pro and a 1gig connection. I always max out around 948mbps down. Coming directly out of my modem to my PC (2.5 to 2.5 NIC’s) I average 1029mbps down. Splitting hairs at that point and truly the cost to provide that speed beyond this one device gets expensive rather quickly (let alone the cost of the UDM Pro, itself) - if you are wanting to stay within the UniFi ecosystem. I went kind of crazy last year and trenched CAT6 over to our next door lot shed and with 4 total (3 house - 1 shed) outdoor AP’s I have WiFi across my entire block (2.4ghz) and then some. 😂 🤷🏼‍♂️

It seems that they develop new features like the wireguard VPN server for the UDM Pro SE first, an then need a couple of months to port it to the UDM Pro. From my point of view, this is a big advantage for the SE compared to the normal UDM.

Hi Chris, love your videos, long-time subscriber...
I've been a happy owner to a UDM-SE (EA) for 26 months, which was bought directly from the european Ubiquiti store, hence 24 months warranty.
However there is no RMA or out of warranty repairs provided by Ubiquiti, as most of you probably already know. So this comment aims at getting some advice on a DIY-repair.
The UDM SE died, or rather had a major stroke, for no apperent reason. It was powered via an UPS, but no RPS. Auto-upgrades were disabled, so it couldn't be a no-power-during-upgrade failure. And there was no power outage...
When swiching power on the SPF+ ports light up, but that's it. LCD and ethernet ports are dead. Tried factory reset and emergency recovery mode with everything disconnected, but failed. Maybe the recovery mode works, but there's no way of knowing since port 1 is unresponsive.
So, which component yields this state when breaking down? Hardly a PSU failure? Main cicuit board? PoE-board? Are there spare parts to be found somewhere? Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Main requirememt is to have the same or higher Controller Version on the target side. Backup and restore procedures can be found on UI Support pages. To be on the save side I also suggest to Backup your SSH password from the original in case you need it for troubleshooting.

Hey Chris, Great review as always. I do enjoy the material you publish. One question regarding the UDM Pro SE. The UDM Pro did not allow for any of the ports to be re-assigned as an additional LAN port. So that you could run a separate LAN and have it route between then and have separate firewall rules. Can the SE version do this as I see that as a major limitation of the UDM Pro over the earlier USG Pro.
Yes you could probably do it with VLANS assigned to the ports, but not all clients support VLANs and this is in my view unnecessarily complicated just to have a separate network.
    Cheers
    Kevin

Great video. Thank you. I want to connect a Home assistant Yellow to one of the PoE ports. Do the Unifi OS provide any statistic on the power consumption on each PoE port. Do you know of any pro and con on having at HA Yellow on a PoE vs a power suply ?

little late to seeing this, but it is a great video. I am newish to networking, and this brings me to a question. is their a reason to get this over something like the cloud key gen2. I know they are not the same thing, but the both have a couple of overlapping features. would love to hear your thoughts on that.

If upgrading from the UDM-Pro to the UDM-SE, could you backup the full configuration from the pro and restore to the UDM-SE?

You should be able to. When I upgraded from the UCK Gen2 to my UDM-Pro. I took a backup of Network and Protect from the Cloud Key. Then I restored my UDM-Pro from the backup file that was created. It worked flawlessly!

Might be a silly question but with the advanced firewall settings of the UDM-SE do you still need to install anti-virus software on your desktop? Not that I really need to but I don't like having programs eating resources if I don't need them.

Is the built in SSD maybe just used as a Cache drive for the cameras and then it moves the video on to a bigger drive that you would install in that slot kind of like what you would do for Unraid in order to improve write speeds?

There is another thing to take into account with the SSD storage. Depending on the technology used (EVO or QVO) the MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) may be very short. So even if it were a 4TB in QVO technology it would be a no go for video storage. From the references of the chips controlling the displays, the specsheets and details of their functionalities can be found but unfortunately I cannot read them on the video.

I currently have a UDM (no pro, the R2D2 one). I am interested in setting up Unifi Protect. should I upgrade to UDM Pro SE or buy the unifi NVR instead? Also I do have Gig internet and only a couple PoE injectors. Thoughts?

Thanks for the review. One of my prime complaints with the UDM-Pro was I couldn't mirror the WAN or any of the LAN ports. My question is do the onboard ports have common functionality like port mirroring available now in the SE?

They had no excuse to not an additional hard drive bay with the older model. Look how much room!
With the new one, they could of stacked some board layouts that would allow it and made room for a second hard drive. The price is way too high for 1 drive slot. This would be the most perfect device out there some small home or office networks (cameras, Poe for ap, some Ethernet connections for wired devices).

I have just ordered one of these, and 5 U6 Pro's for a new WiFi network. I am in South Africa so I am not ordering from the website but rather from a local distributor but I would love to be able to support you by using your affiliate code. Is there any way we can "register" my purchase under your code?

Hehe looking at deploying a udm and associated devices. Now to decide which version to choose, depending also on whether udm-se is available in Australia. My thoughts are that they might direct more engineering resources to the new gear, although the udm-pro hasn't been available for a long time either.
Thanks for your videos Chris. Interesting and easy to follow.

So I have this, and I'm pretty sure this has been asked, but, I can't switch to a unifi protect ecosystem and parlay my SE into my NAS, correct? Talking specifically POE eth cameras.

Hi! Given that I already have a UniFi PoE switch and a UNVR with UniFi Protect application for cameras, so I won't use the PoE ports on the UDM SE nor the HDD slot, is it worth buying a UDM SE over the UDM Pro? Or is the UDM Pro enough?
Does the UDM SE have any other improvements over the UDM Pro? Such as build quality or something else worth considering?

Hello everyone, I am about to purchase a UDM PRO SE but I had a question. When setting up, do I simply connect a RJ45 cable from my ATT Fiber modem into the WAN port on the SE? Or do i need to go into the ATT fiber modem and put it in bypass or bridge mode for the UDM PRO to get any internet?

Hey Chris, seeing your laptop being coonencted to the UDM-SE with an adapter reminded me of the multi-gigabit adapters that you tested with your old laptop. Have you tested them again? if I remember correctly, the main issue was the thunderbolt version on your old laptop.
    Great video btw

Really good review Tom, I have had this model for months here in Ireland, we only have 1Gb GPONs so the only feature I gained was the POE switch. Also hard drive don't like to mount in the SE they don't recognise pre used clean drives very well

You need to do an erase of the partition table. Use WD Lifeguard utility and do a quick erase that wipes the first and last track

Are we sure the 128gb isn’t just caching for smoother scrubbing of timelines?
I’ll buy one as SOON as they allow me to adopt it via an external controller. When a site goes down, I still get an alert. Fine if they want to leave the protect and other apps hosted onboard… but I absolutely LOVE that site to site VPN if both USG-pros are on the same controller.
