Been running a Unifi setup for years, I just keep upgrading as needed. It's been fantastic. The only issues I've ever had were caused by myself and not the hardware or software. i.e. making changes that were not understood or needed.
Hey great upload. Im from Australia, we are in lockdown, and what a great time to upgrade the network. I ran CAT6 threw out the whole house and spent nearly the whole day in the roof, that was painful. I also put together a home network rack all loaded with Ubiquiti UniFi Gen2 24 Port POE Switch and the Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro Enterprise Security Gateway w/10G SFP+ and a Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Lite WiFi 6 Access Point, what a difference it has made. Myfirst set-up was very similar to yours stock NBN modem with a netgear modem/router mixed with a netgear switch. So glad i did it. I also invested in a 24TB NAS for the whole family. And yes, i spent countless days staring at the unifi dashboard, you do get over that after a while. SUBBED/LIKED/THUMBS-UP.
Thanks for checking out the video! Looks like you had a very similar experience as me! I’m really considering upgrading my gateway and access points now that it’s been more than 2 years!
@@TechTalkwithSamir I’m into Unifi, too. But lots of people have switched from the Unifi firewalls to Netgate (pfsense) for better performance and functionality.
Great run down, I run an IT consulting company and we use a lot of Ubiquiti gear. Their protect platform is great for a lot of my clients who have made the switch from Hikvision, Amcrest, Reolink etc. Those other camera platforms are great but for a lot of small business owners they seem to prefer how the protect app functions. Aside from Unifi, Ubiquiti's airMAX line is also fantastic. We use it a lot for point to point shots to link up remote buildings. U6 Lites and U6 LR are both great, down the road I'm hoping they release a UAP-AC-IW 6 version, it's a clean form factor and easy to retrofit existing drops with.
I actually have not. I’ve instead diverted towards making all my high bandwidth devices into wired connections. In the house all the wifi devices are very low bandwidth devices. That being said, I am considering an AP update in the near future!
@4:50 about working on your NAS while editing, it's more a workflow thing. Edit locally on your SSD or external SSD. Then archive and store on your nas after your done.
We are in the middle of building a crypto mine. 3 immersion tanks, 18 miners. We have been using Ubiquity for years and years and for a small business setup it is outstanding. Rarely if ever goes down, wifi is flawless. We are building our mine on a 10gb backbone. 10gb from each tank into the aggregator. into a 8x2 SFP switch and off to the internet. I do love this Ubiquiti hardware. Very reliable and cost effective. I will be able to see all the data coming out of the entire mine right down to the port level on each miner on each switch on each tank. Epic.
I just upgraded from the USG to the UDM SE and love it. Using the old USG and Cloud Key at my mom's house now and upgrading her network which has more modest requirements. Nice thing is that I can remotely manage everything.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Important for me since I travel frequently for work. While the network is generally quite stable, it's helpful to be able to get in and check things out if the family reports an issue. I can also do things like set up get network and remotely enable/disable that and so on. Also since some travel is international, I can VPN into the home network and stream video services or watch local channels, etc. that aren't available in the country where I'm traveling.
I litteraly *just* upgraded to an SE, and I love it so far, went from 662 mbit throughput to 1150 mbit. 16 hours in, and can't believe I waited so long.
I have Synology. You know, you can just bridge any ports (even two of 10g) so you can connect your desktop pc to one port and other port to lan. So both of syno and pc will get lan access and will be in one broadcast segment
I installed 1 AC Nano AP, used Netgear 24 port switch and patch panel. Works flawless. Never an issue. I may need a 2nd switch as I only have 4 ports left though, lol. Ethernet jacks in every bedroom, office and home theater/ living room really chews through them ports quickly. I always recommend UniFi APs to anyone that needs to up their game. Easy install, easy seamless integration with any setup. Damn near plug and play.
Ubiquity guy here . I’m old lol , 61 , and installed the UMD pro , 24 port switch , 5 G4pros , 2 AC Pro AP’s , and an additional 8 port switch in the garage . 6 months and no issues so far . I’m hoping someday they design a doorbell camera with a direct Ethernet connection , as I’m not buying one till then . Not a fan of using wireless unless I absolutely have to, like my iPad .
Great video and explanation. I went through the same issues as you and got bit by the Ubiquiti bug and went full onboard with their eco system. The only thing I would be able to suggest to you is to buy a 9U rack and move your equipment into it and it will be perfect. Great video!
I agree with your comment about a rack. I did a short 4U rack with one of those slots for a shelf to put the non rack mountable stuff. I makes everything so much cleaner and cable management is better.
My current setup is really simple a couple unifi ap lites. a unifi poe switch and pfsense as my router. Really quite beautiful what you can get going for $500-800 bucks depending on your router needs. I splurged with a J4125 processor and can do gigabit over wiregaurd for the whole network.
Very informative, thank you Samir! I'm considering putting a Unifi setup in my home. What's your experience with signal strength on the 2nd floor from those ceiling mounted AP's? I have a standard 2 story stick framed house in the northeastern US with 8 ft ceilings, sheetrock ceilings and hardwood floors. Do you think one AP one the ceiling of the lower floor would provide enough signal for a similar sized area upstairs or am I better off by placing AP's on both levels?
Thanks for checking out the video. It will depend on your home’s layout. If you have open areas looking down from your second floor, you’ll have a lot better mileage than if you have limited open areas. In my house, we get quite a bit of coverage from our second floor AP, but it will depend on each house. In fact for some houses you may need multiple APs within the same floor due to the layout.
Northeast here also. Older 1890's house. I have 1 AP on the 2nd floor hallway ceiling, I get signal in the backyard, and all the way to the basement. Useable signal too.
I love my unifi system. Like you said investing in unifi is like aa black hole lol. I got three bugs with my setup. 1. G3 instant shows error in protect on web browser but not on Android app. 2. Wifi roaming isn't working well and I get stuck on my l6 lr around 500' away. 3. Wifi-man does not show access point pictures, names currently unless browsing my guest wifi ssid within the app.
I use Ubiquity kit on the site I run. I have a network of over 60 AP's and i'm in the process of moving the L2 & L3 distribution onto Ubiquity switches. Will be looking to use their new 25Gb SFP28 capable switches as the backbone & hub switches with 10Gb SPF+ switches in the local cabs. I was looking at the U6 lite AP's but they are very difficult to get in any quantity so that'll have to wait.
Thanks for the video, i have some external assurance now :) I’m having a new 3 story large house, and i’m investing about $ 4k in Unifi gear, UDM pro, in-wall access points (i hope it will be enough as i have no possibility of ceiling mounting) , poe switch and some cameras. The largest installment i had was a 3point mesh network from google, which was fine, but with this larger home and with the camera requirement i figured ill go uniif, especially that i have ethernet wired already to all rooms. Thanks again for the video
This can absolutely work out well in your situation. This time last year I helped a friend install a UDM pro with multiple access points and cameras in their 4 story house with a lot of concrete and stone construction. With one round AP wall mounted in the basement, 2 box mount APs on the floor with bedrooms, and one outdoor AP being repurposed to the utility closet to solve one problem area got their setup running great. We assumed we would need more and were pleasantly surprised at how good the coverage ended up being with some carefully selected AP locations. Now there are no dead zones in the house except the downstairs garage that is completely surrounded by concrete.
I sold all my Unifi gear, had issues with the updates, locked out of my UDM-Pro. My family was down for 1 day, wife and kids. Was not a good day for me. I sold everything, now researching Ruijie Network gear and TP-Link.
I've been researching the same for home. I need to also be future proofed. So the ability to have up to 10Gbit WAN, at least three 10Gbit PoE ports to go to WiFi 6 (hopefully 6E soon) APs, another 10Gbit for Synology NAS, and a last 10Gbit to run to a 24 port, 1GB switch. The thing people are missing. VPN or firewall traffic shaping past 1GB requires a lot of CPU power. Most devices are not ready for that. People also forget about backhaul to WiFi 6APs. Who cares if you get a 6Gbit WiFi signal if your backhaul is only 1Gbit. And finally, I'd like to get it all being affordable and with the same vendor for management tools. This is a huge ask I know, but this is what it will take for serious home networks for professionals working from home.
Great question. It will depend on whether you intend to go with 10 gigabit networking at any point. CAT6 is rated for 10gbps for much shorter distances than CAT7. Even if you do plan on going with 10 gigabit, I would look into CAT6A rather than CAT7. If you don’t ever plan on doing 10gbps networking, just go with CAT6.
@@TechTalkwithSamir But honestly, who really needs 10gbps in their home. 1gbps is even overkill for most day to day uses cases. I would say always run at least CAT6 at a minimum. The price point is not bad anymore for a large box.
It all depends on the specific needs of each person. But even in most extreme cases, I think it’s an overkill to go 10Gb capable cabling for all devices. For 1-2 10Gb devices it might be worth running CAT6A or fiber. I personally need 10Gbe for editing videos and photos directly off of my NAS over the network. It’s not a must have. But definitely a nice to have.
@2:13, I've been debating on doing something similar but using a keystone like patch panel inside the wall, not slightly outside like you did. Any reason you didn't do that?
Still waiting for UI to come out with the WIFI 6E AP's. That way we can get higher bandwidth on the new RF bands. That will be a big help as more clients have 6E built in.
@@Tiddle_s Nope those aren't the extended frequency units, and only WIFI6 based they only support 2.4/5Ghz and not the 6Ghz band. The 6GHz band is much larger and will allow many 160Mhz wide channels. However to take advantage the clients will have to support 6E as well too, so for the short term that won't be many things.
I would like to add something to your "do you need 10G port(s)?". Not only look at the need right now, also look at the (near) future. If you're in the market for a new switch, it is a good idea to think about a 10G version nowadays. You might not need it today, however, you buy a switch for 5, 10, maybe even 15 years. Especially if you just want a decent one. I would surely look into multiple 10G ports with POE. As POE also might be something that will be used more often in the (near) future.
Yes I can see 10 Gbe a lot more relevant in the future. But unfortunately you also pay an early adoption premium. Also the existing cabling for most people may not be sufficient. I do however see 2.5G becoming mainstream over the next 10 years.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Depending on what you buy, yes, you can have early adoption problems / premium. Even with cabling, you know that the switch / router won't be the bottleneck in the setup. That's what's important as well (at least, for me it is).
It depends on the length and quality of the cables. I tried it at first and I had mixed results. It would work periodically and would just completely drop after a while. So I just ran a CAT6 cable and problem was fixed. For me it was only a 100ft run so CAT6 was fine. Otherwise I would have had to go with CAT6A.
So for a new home network would you recommend DMPSE and the SA 10GB switch and some in wall access points as I cant have ceiling ones. anything else needed? would you put your symbology and battery back up in a rack with all this next to where the internet comes in the wall. Please reply thanks
First off...TOP QUALITY video! took a look at your channel, love your thumbnails and your editing style. Did you do them yourself or do you work with a vender/partner to do it all? My question is, do you know if Ubiquity has a Mesh Wifi 6 setup? I use Netgear Orbi today...and have no issues at all, but it is Wifi 5 and I am moving to a new larger house and I need to upgrade...so why expand Wifi 5 when I can get 6 😁 Thanks...and I loved everything...you've got another Subscriber!
Thank you. Appreciate the support. I’m a small channel so I do everything myself. UniFi does have a few mesh APs. I personally haven’t used them but it might be a good option for some people. But if you’re looking into mesh, I suggest sticking with Orbi or Eero or Nest WiFi. The experience you get with Mesh will depend heavily on where you place the APs relative to each other. But I think you have that figured out already at your home ☺️
Very cool, do you have a background in graphics/photoshop and video editing? Your editing is up there with the big channels and your thumbnails are very clear, and compelling.
Thank you! I don’t have background in graphics and video editing but I am definitely very interested in it so I do a lot of self teaching through UA-cam videos. It feels great to see comments like yours. It helps me stay motivated!
I am not sure actually. I’m not part of the early access program so I don’t have any insights. But I can’t imagine them lagging too far behind the competition.
I recently upgraded from the USG to the UDM Pro SE, I couldn't get the speed that I was offered by my ISP because the USG was the bottleneck, I'm happy with my investment to the Pro SE as it will future proof any network speed upgrades from my ISP AND still running IDS/IPS without even more bandwidth bottlenecks, I since decided to slowly start upgrading my cabling to minimum Cat6 and looking to get the XG 16 which has 4 10GB RJ45 and 12 SFP+ as I bought 2 dual 10GB RJ45 cards, it is a bit overkill for me at the moment but this should last at least the next 5 and more years and future proof any expansion needs I have. The USG still is a great little Gateway device but unfortunately due to it's capabilities "outdated". Tricky part might be the Pro SE only supports one site so if someone has multiple sites it will not work with that, I only use it for 1 site and succesfully restored the backup from my hosted controller so far I haven't come across issues except my VPN setup but vlan and all seems to work fine from the backup and the networks/wifi settings.
Going to 10GbE, did you notice a major difference when grabbing data from the Synology? Which Synology DS did you get? Did you aggregate the link to give higher speed? My Synology is only 2Gb when aggregated. I am considering upgrading to 2.5GbE because I am not sure the 10GbE is going to help. I recently updated my AP's now and I went with the U6-Pro's. Not sure they were available at the time this video was released. In hindsight, very few devices take advantage of WiFi 6 and even less take advantage of 4x4 MIMO and I probably would save the money, albeit small amount, and get the U6-Lite or even the older AC versions and there would be very little difference. You are right that the USG will not handle GbE WAN, the USG-Pro is barely able to do Gb WAN. I still use a USG-Pro I got second hand because I can't justify a Dream Machine for home use and there is currently no replacement for the old USG. Not sure how viable GbE WAN is, even now in 2022. I can only see Gb WAN useful if you are using a lot of data in the cloud, rather than local on NAS, so the USG Pro may do me for quite a while yet.
Great questions. I actually have a video coming out tomorrow talking about some further 10gig upgrades I did recently. My synology is the DS1618+. I had to add a separate 10Gb Nic to get it to 10gbe. Initially I had 4 aggregated links. But the problem with that is that it can still only serve 1gbe to a specific device. It can serve up to 4 devices at 1gbe simultaneously with the 4 aggregated links but it doesn’t serve 4Gbe to any one specific device (hope that makes sense). After I upgraded to 10 gig from end to end, I now have 10 gig connection between my desktop and my synology. So when I’m importing photos in Lightroom from my CFExpress card, it’s Atleast 4-5 times faster. It’s not quite 10x because my synology hard drives are bottlenecks but still night and day difference. Now if you don’t work with bulk data like I do, it probably won’t make a difference but for me, it’s basically like working off of a SATA ssd but over the network. Now 2.5GbE is definitely a good balance. Lot less expensive and can use your existing cabling. And it’s still more than double the speed of gigabit. I think for most people 2.5G might be the best upgrade from 1Gig. Thanks for checking out the video!
Hello. we thank you for good videos, a short question Is it possible to administer the Ubiquiti USW-PRO-24 in any software without a Dream Machine or similar hub for incoming internet. Am in the phase of learning how Ubiquiti works and the only place I find to ask questions about Ubiquiti products is youtube. we thank you in advance and warm greetings from Sweden
I have recently been looking to upgrade my home network aswell. I think i will either go with the new UDR that ubiquiti recently announced for EA soon or a UDM-Pro-SE I'm a little bit concerned with the IPS throughput of the UDR since i expect it to be just like the UDM which is about 850mbps, which is ofc great... just not if you have 1000/1000 fiber.. And then I'm not a 100% sure about the fan in the UDM/UDR since i've heard they can be pretty noisy... at least with the UDM-Pro-SE you can upgrade them to a set of noctua fans if they become noisy. Besides that i will probably go with a USW-Lite-8-POE switch and 1-2 of the new Wifi 6 AP Pros when they come out of early access aswell(depending on if i go with the new UDR with wifi 6 or go for the UDM-pro-se without wifi)
Yes the UDR’s announcement definitely makes things interesting. Although if your network gear is going sit in a closet rather than at a common place, the UDR’s built in AP may go to waste. I personally would lean towards the UDM Pro SE simply because of the fact that you likely won’t even have to think of another upgrade for years so might as well get the most throughput possible in case you do get gigabit fiber down the road and want to have IPS enabled.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I mean i would have the UDR in a common place where i could utilize the AP in it. But then again as you said, the UDM pro SE would most likely be pretty future proof for the next 5-10+ years with IPS enabled. UDM Pro SE also has better options for Unifi protect aswell. Eventhough they have added that option to the UDR... just not convinced it is enough with 128GB ssd and microSD cards
"Hello everyone. I'm Phil and I'm an addict" I've been in the Unifi ecosystem since early 2017. It's awesome but man it's like a narcotic.... I started with the USG, a first generation cloud key, a US-8-150W and 2 x UAP-AC-PROs. That little setup was my gateway drug and after moving to a house with solid concrete walls and adding more and more IoT devices...my network expanded. "Oh please god forgive me...I was just a middle aged man who wanted perfect network client connectivity...." and I got it ;). I built an 8 RU 'RAST rack', installed a 16 port patch panel, moved to a USG-4, a cloud key gen2 plus and a USW-24-500W. Then I began adding edge switches, additional access points and Unifi cameras through the cloud key gen2+. I even went so far as to create a wirelessly bridged camera outpost in my garden using a US-5-FLEX, two cameras and an older access point. It was all worth it. I have no regrets...only that I didn't do it sooner.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Its a great ecosystem and thats the key. The ecosystem and cross compatibility is the reason I went with Sonos and Home Assitant too. The Unifi integration with HASS is very, very useful.
I haven’t yet made any further upgrades since this video. It’s mainly because the UDM Pro SE has been out of stock. I am also looking into the new UXG but I’m still leaning toward the UDM Pro SE for my specific needs.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Yeah, the UDM Pro SE is a good system. I see it come up available from time to time. I needed some new cameras for my home setup and I was checking daily specially in the early mornings, they seem to come up available more in the mornings. Good luck getting your UDMP Se and thanks for the reply, look forward to your videos.
I'm currently building a system for my house under construction. Very frustrated in the process of picking out the AP's. Any suggestions? Additionally, if I went by the heat map on the designer tool, I'd have to have a ton of AP's.
I suggest instead of trying to find the perfect solution from day one, start off with maybe just one or two APs based on where you think would be the most coverage and you can always add additional APs down the road. I suggest looking into the UAP-6-Lite. I’m personally using two of the older AC versions of these. Of course the layout of your house will play a big factor but for me 2 generally gives me great coverage throughout a 4000sq ft house.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Thank you for taking the time to reply to me and for the advice. The fact that I can get everything wired right now as we are only framed was driving me to try and get it perfect. Thanks again. New subscriber!
With the Poe injectors that come with the AP. Don’t use shielded cables from the switch to the injector. Not sure why, but it worked for me and my issues with the AP getting data.
Great video. I have done nearly the same as you have except 10 Gig switch. If you have access to coax and do not want to run cable, you can use MOCA adapters. I have used the Gocoax models and they are simple to install and very stable. I installed a dream machine for a friend and they are pretty good. The new version with Poe may be worth waiting for
Really great video and YT suggested it to me at the right moment. Just yesterday I started asking which way I should go? Ubiquiti or Mikrotik. A little bit of mix and match will be the answer. The Mikrotik 10G switch is now also on my shopping list. 🙏
Best of luck. By the way you may need to go into the mikrotik switch and set the IP address manually. It comes default with an IP address that may not be on your subnet.
@@TechTalkwithSamir thanks for the bonus tip! I also appreciate and can relate to your comment about the ‘honeymoon’ period with new tech. Very well said. Keep up the great content.
You must not have the threat management/prevention turned on your USG. I am looking to upgrade my USG because I have the full threat prevention package turned on and with that you can only get about 110-120Mbit through the USG, which is better than the 85Mpbs it's rated for with threat prevention turned on, but it's still not enough for my needs. When I've got mutiple TVs running 4K streaming along with both my wife and I working and all the phones, tablets and smart tech in the house, the Internet can lag. Not bad lag, but sometimes I'll be on a conference call and the people will tell me I'm dropping out or sound like a chipmunk. This is even with my work PC plugged into Ethernet. My setup is 2x UAC-AP-Pro, US-8-60W PoE switch, USG-3P, CloudKey Gen2. Running the latest controller software 7.x, 6.x firmware on the switch and APs, and the latest available on the USG (4.4.53 I think). I'd like to upgrade to the Unifi Dream Router which is in EA now and sold out on the page, but they're only asking $79 for it and it has 2 PoE. I signed up for the wait list/restock list. This would replace the USG and the Cloud Key. I'll still need my little switch because I have 7/8 ports populated currently, but if some other person out there was only running their APs off the switch they could potentially replace that too with the UDR. I have no need for 10G at home because I store all my photos in the cloud. I don't know what the threat prevention throughput is on the UDR but as long as it's in the 300-400 Mbps range that will be fine. The UDM threat prevention throughput is 850Mbps but that device costs $299. In a small house or apartment the UDR would probably be all you needed because it has WiFi 6 built in. I will keep my APs even if I get the UDR because I have a large 1 story house, and as noted I have 7 ethernet drops in usage so I need an external switch regardless. Note that, in order to see the UDR you have to sign in and be authorized for Early Access.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I have not gotten the "Stock Update Notification" for the UDR yet. I did get it for the UDM, but I'd rather not invest in a UDM at this point as it is an older product.
I signed up for the stock update but I just randomly checked the next morning and it was in stock even though I never got a notification. I recommend checking every morning for stock rather than waiting on the alert.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I see. I checked again just now and it's showing sold out again, I guess I missed it if they had some in stock. I thought maybe it would make a difference if I signed in, but no such luck.
I was surprised too. But lately I’ve been seeing it in stock in the mornings pretty frequently so I recommend checking daily if you’re looking to get it soon.
How did you find the performance of the MikroTik CRS305? I tried one of those too for 10GBE and found the performance was very poor, managing around 3Gbps with occasional peaks of 5-6.
I personally haven’t found any issues. The performance heavily depends on the source and destination. It works better on my freenas server than it does on my synology. And that likely has to do with the drive performances on the devices.
I should have clarified. If you turn on intrusion prevention system the USG caps out at 85 megabits. If you don’t use IPS then it should have no issues.
@@TechTalkwithSamir oh for sure! one thing i should let you know if you don't already about the UDM pro is that it has issues with gigabit PPPoE connections, as it is single threaded. I actually get slightly faster speeds with my old USG as this apparently has hardware offload for PPPoE. If your WAN is via DHCP or static IP though you won't have any issues :)
Yea unfortunately that’s the price of innovation. That being said the USG did come out in 2014 so it’s probably a good thing that they no longer sell it. There’s much better options now.
I personally would look into the “ UniFi Dream Router” it has built in Wifi6 Access point, two POE ports (+ 2 non POE). Can Run UniFi network software + UniFi protect on device and it’s priced at $200. I think it’s an awesome value.
My only two small suggestions for future growth, the doorbell cam is pretty good, and I'd buy a floating rack for all your gear. Get it off the carpet and home-made shelf (esp. that UPS. They get warm/hot, and could cause a fire if it were to fail). Personally, I'd also wait for the Wifi 6 standard AP, as the range would make a big difference over the lite. I have the UDM Pro currently, and its mostly good. Albeit, it crashes sometimes with no apparent reason, and no output to log. I find it kind of frustrating tbh. I also run a Synology NAS, 2 APs, and have wired most of my house with Cat 6. Albeit, my APs are the older gen's, but I have nothing that is wifi 6 yet, so they'll get replaced when the time comes.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I have had the G4 doorbell for about a year, its been awesome, so much better than my skybell. I've had 2 main issues. I had to create a dedicated wifi signal that was only 5GHz. It wouldn't stay connected to 2.5ghz for more than 5min, no idea why. Second issue is it randomly loses connection, and I have to power cycle it. That's only happened a few times and it was very random. I could have better wifi signal strength so until I fix that I will assume that's the random drop issue. I also had to upgrade my doorbell transformer.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Yes. I only have 2 real complaints about this device. The speaker really isn't loud enough (its tiny, so not surprising), and there is currently no scheduling around door notifications. You cant turn off the ringer/doorbell based on a schedule, nor any of the notifications for detection activity.
Yea. That’s unfortunate. Thankfully personally I was thinking of going with U6Lite anyways. I’m currently using UAP-AC-Lite so it’s the same range of device.
I’m selling my UDM and WiFi 6 Lite AP, cause it worked alright apart from causing lag spikes on my Xbox Series X in COD, and made it lag. Even connecting directly to the UDM did it. This was over wireless as I don’t have the means for wired, my original Google WiFi worked fine, I bought the Google Nest and Amplifi Alien to test and I’m keeping the Alien as it’s the smoothest, outperforms the UDM and AP for sure. I tried everything I could think off but couldn’t stop the lag, asked on Ubiquiti forums and no one really helped so what can you do?
Interesting.. I personally haven’t had any latency issues with my UniFi setup. Then again I mostly do my gaming on PC which is connected via Ethernet. That being said, I would try a different AP (perhaps an older AC model) to see if there’s a difference. The WiFi 6 APs are still relatively new and perhaps there’s some future firmware updates that are needed to iron things out.
Seems as though the Series X has lots of known wifi problems. There is a huge thread on MS's xbox forums about it. My guess, is that there is a specific config in your Unifi setup that the xbox simply doesn't like for some odd reason. The UDM does offer better security then the Amplifi, but otherwise, they are pretty similar. Also, the Amplifi has a 6x6 MIMO antenna, whereas the Lite is only a 2x2, so your real problem, may just be not enough channels with the Lite AP. Sounds like the Amplifi would be better for you in the end anyway.
@@spyrule I don’t think my Series X has any problems. I did think if it’s the Lite having 2X2 but I read people claiming the Pro or LR models are way overkill? I’ve reset the UDM and the Lite now and even unplugged and switched off every single connected device in the house, and set up port forwarding, but still had the issue with the AP. I’m currently testing again with it connected direct to the UDM as I get the best pings like that, tomorrow I’ll try the Alien with port forwarding enabled. But the Alien units are a bit big and ugly. Early this morning the Alien just dropped ALL connections, I had to power cycle it to get them reconnected? Not a good impression for something so expensive.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I should have added, have tested the Amplifi Alien extensively now and am sending it back, it’s throughout just cannot match my UDM, in ping tests my AP as it is meshed performs much better and more reliably then the Amplifi system. I don’t know how Ubiquiti did it, but the UniFi kit REALLY performs. I think if I need to I’ll just run an Ethernet cable to the AP, and I’ll upgrade to the UDR. In my opinion my original Google WiFi is a better mesh system then the Alien is as it’s much better value for money and on MY I get et runs similarly, I don’t have gigabit by the way.
As an IT consultant that primarily deals with Cisco, Sonicwall, Fortinet, and even Araknis, I love the UniFi software, but absolutely hate the range on the APs, specially the older UAP Pro, and even the new HD and NanoHD. Horrible, horrible range compared to other offerings (Cisco ME and Aironet, FortiAP, etc.)
Unifi is great however Ubiquiti has already made changes to some of their icosystem that was just plain greedy. Specifically the change they made to Unifi video. They migraded to unifi protect forcing the rest of us to do the same while many consumers were left hanging with devices that no longer work. Based on that I would not be surprised if they do the same thing to the rest of their devices. They always claimed in the past that their devices are "democratic" meaning no license fees for their controllers setting them apart from cisco however as like many businesses that grow into massive corporations its obvious that it's only a matter of time before the take away all the cool things about their devices and locking everything down. Pretty soon they will start charging for the use of the controller or remove it as a downloadable option all together. The unifi pro SE is a perfect example of this. They released the unifi dream machine which was great for a simple home setup however when they released the unifi UDM pro it was a sham. Half the casing is empty and no POE only to release the SE 2 years later. If this is not greed I dont know what is. I would proceed with caution cause Ubiquiti is turning into another Elon Musk. Great start but just crazy greedy afterwards.
I'm sorry, but they are in the business to make money... It would be a waste of time being in business if they are not turning over a profit. I'm sure if you ran a large business your main goals would be decent products and making yourself a tidy profit. I know if it were me, that's what I would do
@@TechTalkwithSamir Unifi talk…. It works but I can’t recommend it except to fill your Unifi drug fix. (Beta still) I’m running it over a P2P VPN and it has worked flawlessly for that though. @@mrmotofy As just a consumer, I can’t really dispute your claim. But I can say I receive downloads in the 100+ mbps range all over this 2,400 sq. ft. house.
If we’re talking just internet speeds, then sure 100mbps is more than sufficient. But when accessing your local files from a NAS, WiFi just doesn’t cut it for workflow that deals with lot of data.
Your claim that the usg can’t handle gigabit speed is not true. I’m using fiber at 1 gigabit and it is very able. Please check your facts before spreading misinformation. Bad Apple!!
Yes I meant having Intrusion prevention turned on. There’s a clear warning on the controller that turning on threat management will limit the USGs throughput to 85Mbps. If you are running without any of these features on, then like you said, no issues with gigabit fiber. But if you want to enable some of these advanced features, the USG is underpowered.
Very good and fancy video about UniFy but how about to tell viewers about negative things from unify ?!? for example end of life =end of support = end of ability to use the unify device = buy new ubiquity device for $$$$ !!! how about such stories ?!?? ubiquity ecosystem = Aplle ecosystem = nice design for tons of money !!!
Been running a Unifi setup for years, I just keep upgrading as needed. It's been fantastic. The only issues I've ever had were caused by myself and not the hardware or software. i.e. making changes that were not understood or needed.
Lol we’re all a bit guilty of that at some point or another
Great video - just in the process of installing unify with a Dream machine pro SE, so was glad to get reconfirmation that I was on the right path.
I’m sure you’ll be very satisfied with the UDM-SE!
@@TechTalkwithSamir I am looking at upgrading my USG to a Netgate 6100. Much more functional and high performance firewall appliance, I think.
There’s many options out there! I just happen to have gone into the UniFi rabbit hole.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I’m into Unifi, too. But lots of people have switched from the Unifi firewalls to Netgate (pfsense) for better performance and functionality.
Shhhhhhh. Don’t tell the ACMA.
I’m really hoping for a IW version of a WiFi 6 AP. Would make things a lot more seamless around the house.
@@TechTalkwithSamir absolutely and I guess from my comment above it would actually be a UAP-AX-IW not an AC-IW
@@TechTalkwithSamir Have you gotten the U6-IW since then?
I actually have not. I’ve instead diverted towards making all my high bandwidth devices into wired connections. In the house all the wifi devices are very low bandwidth devices. That being said, I am considering an AP update in the near future!

Epic.
Unifi is my absolute go-to when it comes to wireless installations. thank you for promoting what I love!
Thank you for checking out the video!
I just upgraded from the USG to the UDM SE and love it. Using the old USG and Cloud Key at my mom's house now and upgrading her network which has more modest requirements. Nice thing is that I can remotely manage everything.
Yea UniFi is great for remotely managing an offsite location!
For sure! I find myself often updating firmware for my devices remotely while I’m not home so that I’m not affected by the downtime.
I litteraly *just* upgraded to an SE, and I love it so far, went from 662 mbit throughput to 1150 mbit. 16 hours in, and can't believe I waited so long.

Definitely considered that option. But since I have multiple 10G devices, decided to go with the switch route.

Thanks for checking out the video. Appreciate the support.

Yea UniFi APs are awesome.
Obsessing over the dashboard is a real thing when you first install your Ubiquiti devices!!!
Totally agree!
Thanks for the video, i have some external assurance now :)
I’m having a new 3 story large house, and i’m investing about $ 4k in Unifi gear, UDM pro, in-wall access points (i hope it will be enough as i have no possibility of ceiling mounting) , poe switch and some cameras.
The largest installment i had was a 3point mesh network from google, which was fine, but with this larger home and with the camera requirement i figured ill go uniif, especially that i have ethernet wired already to all rooms.
Thanks again for the video
Appreciate you checking out the video. Hope your UniFi investment goes well.
Sorry to hear that!
Great video, just brought an entire Ubiquiti setup, let's see how it goes.
Awesome! I’m sure you won’t regret it!
That would be a nice setup! Hopefully UniFi is working towards something like this in the future. Wouldn’t it be nice if it was all in one device?!
Great video I totally agree if it ain't broke don't fix it
Thanks for checking out the video ☺️
I think I overdid it with my UniFi setup bit it'll be perfect if I ever get a bigger place
That’s the best thing about it. It’s scalable to a bigger environment when you need it.
Hi Samir. I’m renovating my house now and am wondering if CAT 6 is sufficient or if I should go for CAT7?
Great video btw
Eagerly waiting for the UDM-PRO SE too.
Saw one on Ebay 2 weeks ago and final bidding price was $900+.
Those are probably the early access people trying to cash in!
Aren't they out now? I've seen Unifi Wireless 6 (Sometimes called U6) devices on their website, and at my local retailers.
I like unifi stuff even though it's not perfect it's good enough for most power users I would say
Totally agree.
That's what's important as well (at least, for me it is).
just found your channel, keep it up, love your work
Thank you for the support! I appreciate it!
Company I used to work for had high traffic 10Gb network ran over cat5e for video production use. It worked fine with cat5e cable
It depends on the length and quality of the cables. I tried it at first and I had mixed results. It would work periodically and would just completely drop after a while. So I just ran a CAT6 cable and problem was fixed. For me it was only a 100ft run so CAT6 was fine. Otherwise I would have had to go with CAT6A.
great info BUT.....since you are not planning on upgrading anything anytime soon, you should really get a rack
Meh. Rack won’t add any functionality it’s all in a closet anyways. So I doubt I’ll spend any money for the sake of spending money.
So for a new home network would you recommend DMPSE and the SA 10GB switch and some in wall access points as I cant have ceiling ones. anything else needed? would you put your symbology and battery back up in a rack with all this next to where the internet comes in the wall. Please reply thanks
Good job. Real world practical information.
Thank you for checking out the video.
First off...TOP QUALITY video! took a look at your channel, love your thumbnails and your editing style.
Did you do them yourself or do you work with a vender/partner to do it all?
My question is, do you know if Ubiquity has a Mesh Wifi 6 setup?
I use Netgear Orbi today...and have no issues at all, but it is Wifi 5 and I am moving to a new larger house and I need to upgrade...so why expand Wifi 5 when I can get 6 😁
Thanks...and I loved everything...you've got another Subscriber!
Any idea when Unifi is releasing WiFi 6E Access Points? Any leaks as to when they’ll be released or if they even plan to release anytime soon?
For sure. I’m glad you were able to get a UDM Pro SE before they all sold out. Might be a while before they come on stock again.
Hello.
we thank you for good videos, a short question
Is it possible to administer the Ubiquiti USW-PRO-24 in any software without a Dream Machine or similar hub for incoming internet.
Am in the phase of learning how Ubiquiti works and the only place I find to ask questions about Ubiquiti products is youtube.
we thank you in advance and warm greetings from Sweden
You can actually install the UniFi controller on a computer on the network and administer devices from there.
I have recently been looking to upgrade my home network aswell.
I think i will either go with the new UDR that ubiquiti recently announced for EA soon or a UDM-Pro-SE
I'm a little bit concerned with the IPS throughput of the UDR since i expect it to be just like the UDM which is about 850mbps, which is ofc great... just not if you have 1000/1000 fiber..
For sure. In the long run the extra cost will be negligible
After 7 month but still SE not in stock…. I want it as well
Seems like everything is hard to find these days
"Hello everyone. I'm Phil and I'm an addict"
I've been in the Unifi ecosystem since early 2017.
Yea think there’s quite a few people who can relate to your addiction ☺️
@@TechTalkwithSamir Its a great ecosystem and thats the key. The ecosystem and cross compatibility is the reason I went with Sonos and Home Assitant too. The Unifi integration with HASS is very, very useful.

I haven’t yet made any further upgrades since this video. It’s mainly because the UDM Pro SE has been out of stock. I am also looking into the new UXG but I’m still leaning toward the UDM Pro SE for my specific needs.

PFSense is currently my firewall/router which is awesome
Thanks for checking out the video and supporting the channel ☺️
Jumping to unifi... so I subbed.
Thanks for the support.
How are you finding switching? I run Web servers and since I switched yo unify I have noticed switching is slow
Great video. Are the ubiquiti APs mesh network capable
They have mesh specific APs for their system.
@@TechTalkwithSamir thank you will check that out. Thinking of getting the udm pro
With the Poe injectors that come with the AP. Don’t use shielded cables from the switch to the injector. Not sure why, but it worked for me and my issues with the AP getting data.
Hmm. Good to know. When I used them for a while, I just used unshielded CAT 5E without any issues.
Great video. I have done nearly the same as you have except 10 Gig switch. If you have access to coax and do not want to run cable, you can use MOCA adapters. I have used the Gocoax models and they are simple to install and very stable. I installed a dream machine for a friend and they are pretty good. The new version with Poe may be worth waiting for
I’ve never tried MOCA adapters. Although I can imagine them to be a great solution for people that want to avoid running Ethernet!
I wonder what are the fire wall features with the Dream machine pro edition
Running an UDM with 2 8-port poe switches and 2 pro aps I have no needs for a chamge yet.
Yup. Why fix something that ain’t broken!

I just ordered an UDR. Once it comes in, I’m hoping to make a video on it.
Hey, I used that USG for my gigabit internet connection and had no issues :)
Nice video Samir, Cheers!
Thanks for checking it out ☺️ appreciate the support!
You can use the 10g wan as lan.....
The problem I have with Unifi is how rapidly they upgrade / obsolete devices.
The USG router that you have has essentially disappeared.
Yea unfortunately that’s the price of innovation. That being said the USG did come out in 2014 so it’s probably a good thing that they no longer sell it. There’s much better options now.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I'd appreciate any recommendations you have because I can't find one.
I personally would look into the “ UniFi Dream Router” it has built in Wifi6 Access point, two POE ports (+ 2 non POE). Can Run UniFi network software + UniFi protect on device and it’s priced at $200. I think it’s an awesome value.
@@TechTalkwithSamir I saw that. It's just an odd shape. No more wall mounting.
For me personally that’s not an issue but I can totally see it being a problem for others.
Planning on replacing my USG Pro 4p with a Dream Machine Pro, maybe i'll go for the SE now.
At this point it’s best to wait. Even if it means that you get the UDM Pro at a discount.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve been looking into the UniFi doorbell as well. Heavily considering it to replace my Ring doorbell.
Can the G4 doorbell do continuous recording?
@@TechTalkwithSamir Yes. I only have 2 real complaints about this device. The speaker really isn't loud enough (its tiny, so not surprising), and there is currently no scheduling around door notifications. You cant turn off the ringer/doorbell based on a schedule, nor any of the notifications for detection activity.
Good to know. I’ll look into it and potentially review it in the future.
Nice Video, thanks for the tips
Thanks for checking out the video!
The UDM-Pro SE PoE are only PoE not PoE+, ok for U6Lite but not U6-Lr or U6-Pro.
Yea. That’s unfortunate. Thankfully personally I was thinking of going with U6Lite anyways. I’m currently using UAP-AC-Lite so it’s the same range of device.
There's only 2 POE+ Ports. On the Dream Machine SE.
WIFI 6E waiting to make the jump.
U6E Enterprise is in the EA store.
@@TechTalkwithSamir That’s very true, it could need a firmware revision or two. I may take a look at the AC AP.
With the UDM Pro selling for $379, I don't know why anyone would buy Asus and Trend Net routers. UDM Pro is #1. No competition.
For sure! Although I recently got a UDR and for many people that might be the one to get. Especially people that are not networking enthusiasts.
I like very much the access points, but I don't trust the routers.... many people complain about them
I personally have had good experience with the USG router.
great speech
Thanks

Good video

May be good for bigger installations, but for home unifi is not worth of it. Basic cheap devices can do the same with fraction of unifi price.
Thanks bmnice video

Yes upgrade to wi fi 6 access point
Definitely considering it!
look at all those cables etc in the closet. don't wonder why average people just get orbi or eero.
That’s the price you pay for a stable home network ☺️
"Intuitive ways to set up firewall rules" - LOL
"Initiative" and "firewall" should not be used in the same sentence... lol
I know if it were me, that's what I would do
Agreed.. no one just makes products to do favors. If it doesn’t make money, they don’t care for it.
Unifi addict…. Yeah I need a fix once in a while too…
Haha!
@@TechTalkwithSamir Unifi talk…. It works but I can’t recommend it except to fill your Unifi drug fix. (Beta still) I’m running it over a P2P VPN and it has worked flawlessly for that though. Family thinks I’m nuts though since they call my house/mother-in-laws and have to hit an extension. My mom lives in the basement and has her own extension also.
Haha talk about going overboard :P
@@TechTalkwithSamir $10 a month for a SIP trunk to run everyone’s phone…. what I told my wife…. “In the long run this pays for itself”. I bought almost all my stuff used off of eBay. 2 USGs, one KeyPlus controller, a 16port PoE, a 4 port PoE , 3 UAC-AP-Pro, 1 flex switch, cameras and phone. The unifi bug is more like an infection....
Haha for sure!
Omada and tp Link is better
Wireless is so much easier.
Sure is!
But slower in general
@@mrmotofy As just a consumer, I can’t really dispute your claim. But I can say I receive downloads in the 100+ mbps range all over this 2,400 sq. ft. house.
If we’re talking just internet speeds, then sure 100mbps is more than sufficient. But when accessing your local files from a NAS, WiFi just doesn’t cut it for workflow that deals with lot of data.
bro great stuff.. but get a bigger shirt, stop wearing kids size tshirt
lol
Your claim that the usg can’t handle gigabit speed is not true. I’m using fiber at 1 gigabit and it is very able. Please check your facts before spreading misinformation. Bad Apple!!
Turn on the IDP/IDS and see if you still get those gigabit speeds.....
Watching his videos make me sick. Why the constant zoom in/out. That's bad camera work or editing one of the two.
Sorry to make you sick. Thanks for the feedback.
