  • Pitting the new 2020 M1 powered MacBook Pro 13" against the six-core, 8th generation, i7 Mac Mini in Logic Pro. How does the 16GB M1 limitation come into play? Will the six i7 cores take down the M1's four performance fours? There are already a million vids up about these machines. Welcome to 1,000,001.
    EDIT: The RAM usage I reference & flash on screen at 09:18 should say 2.74GB, not 2.4GB. Dangit Seven! Why you gotta do me that way?!

    Hi, great video, definitely needed to see how it performs with a large Logic session. I only have one question, did the fan kick in a lot when running the session? I want a M1 MBP but I’m also considering the M1 Mac Air because of it having no fan.

      I haven't had the fan turn on in Logic yet. But take that with a grain of salt as this isn't my main Logic machine. I have had it kick on with some Final Cut projects....takes a LOT to get it there, though. And when it does, it hasn't been anywhere close to as loud as my 2014 MBP or latest Intel Mini. I like the touchbar for video editing, but if I was exclusively using for Logic (and needed to be mobile), I'd consider the Air.

    When all the cores are used to drive Logic it means they will be evenly split on the CPU load with less spikes in the program, however, the rest of the computer will stall because some cores are needed to process other stuff, so mostly Logic users keep it to automatic or a lower number of cores depending on what works. Which is no biggy given how powerful the new M1 works. Unless you are using specific plugins, which apparently most work with rosetta anyway. As you say, only having two ports would be an issue for most people and it will be interesting to see how the M1X performs without using conversion software. For that price breakout cables could be used, which in many times is the case, if anyone is starting out, it is well worth it, there has never been so much horse power in a Mac period.

    Self-proclaimed uber nerd here, I’m gonna try to explain how the Logic Pro process can peak over 100%.
    The way Activity Monitor works is it shows your used up total CPU usage at the bottom there, the percentage where it says “Idle” is the actual amount of the CPU not being used. The number above it shows the actual use amount. The processes in the list above do not show the total CPU usage; rather it shows how much of the usage of the CPU that is being used of that % in the red is. Therefore, Logic Pro was using a sizeable chunk, so much so that it was a higher number when compared to the rest of the processes and apps running.

    I have never had an issue with audio count tracks on the intel, but looking go Apple Silicon Mx, so it seems the issue is only going to be RAM on the M1 series as 16GB is small, but the cost of extra RAM on the M2/M3 is silly compared to 48GB I have on the 5.1, for sample instruments RAM is the key...How does an M1 with 16G RAM perform when the RAM is maxed out with sample instruments etc

    • @MusicNerdStuff
      @MusicNerdStuff  4 місяці тому +1

      It just depends on your instruments. The majority of the samples used by Kontakt, for instance, are DFD (direct from disk) and only a very small amount is loaded into RAM. And the internal storage is super fast. I don't do heavy orchestral arrangements myself, but this one was quite a few samplers and hybrid sample/synth instruments loaded and it kept up with no trouble. I can only speak anecdotally, but for the kind of productions I've thrown at it, it's been good. I have a Mac Studio with 64GB and I've never been anywhere close to needing it. YMMV of course. Best of luck!

    Just as a note: In another video, out of the native Logic plugins, Alchemy seems to do not too well in comparison to its Intel sibling - it's been speculated that it might not be really optimized for the ARM platform yet (which I would sort of understand, given that Alchemy is still based on the Camel Audio original, which might have some deeper Intel/crossplatform roots/traces). I'm sure things would run yet a bit smoother with something else.

    • @MusicNerdStuff
      @MusicNerdStuff  3 роки тому +3

      I can't speak to the M1 compatibility of those plugins, but if you don't need a laptop, the new M1 Mini is THE way to go IMO. On paper it's the "fastest" of the three M1s, with better heat dispersion. It'll save you at least a few hundred compared to the Air (about $1100 USD with 16GB RAM) and for desktop use gives you native support for dual monitors, two USB 4 and two USB 3.1 ports. I have a 2012 MBP and can say that this will be a LEAP forward for the '12 iMac. However, if you don't have to make a move right now, it might be worth seeing what happens in March. Rumors are going around about the next round of Mac releases. Possibly a Mini Pro (or Pro Mini) and possibly an M2 chip or multiple M1 chip configurations that may allow for more RAM & different port configs. I haven't had any trouble with the 16GB RAM in my M1 MBP, running Superior Drummer 3 (still under Rosetta 2) with some RAM hungry SDX; the architecture for accessing memory is much faster and more efficient...but....developers will soon be taking advantage of that and more RAM couldn't be a bad thing.

    After running Rosetta mode I was able to load all of my plugins- except NI. What was interesting is that after validating the plugins in Rosetta I was able to load Logic Pro with Rosetta off and the plugins still worked. The question is should i continue however to run Logic in Rosetta mode or should I go native mode. There are some who indicated that running apps that need Rosetta while running Logic outside of Rosetta causes worse performance......Thougths? Seems like we would want to run Logic in native universal mode and not Intel mode if possible.

    • @MusicNerdStuff
      @MusicNerdStuff  3 роки тому

      Interesting. Yeah, I would have assumed running native would far outperform Logic in R2. I’ve been waiting to install most of my 3rd party stuff as this isn’t my main Mac for audio. Honestly at this point I’m more worried about having to purchase compatible “upgrades” from 3rd party vendors. Waves is historically bad about this so I’m assuming the worst there. I also use IZotope’s tools for mastering and “repair & recovery” work, which I’m much more likely to want to do on a laptop. So I’m proceeding with caution with most 3rd party plugs/apps for now.

For most folks, holding down the power button upon startup until u get the Startup Options menu, selecting Startup Security Utility from drop down menu, then choosing “reduced security” works.
