Can you do an actual tough memory hog project without copying tracks for more real world use maybe a movie soundtrack with huge ram hungry sample libraries?
its the best audio computer out there, since production is never 100% load like a rendering process, we wont hear the fans ever.

great!!! coul you try to overload the cpu with one single sound. i'd recommend downloading a msound factory demo, choosing a random patch running it on 512x oversampling and some instances on soothe also with highest multisampling. i'd like to see how far you can go before resamle/freeze stuff.
My mid-2012 MacBook Pro unibody can manage that - just. Admittedly it would take around 100 separate projects of 7 tracks each, avoiding any plug ins by Cherry Audio or Roland, then render each project as a stem and toss them together (and forget mastering with RX8 or 9), but it’s possible ;)
Yeah it’s totally possible on older macs if you bounce or render tracks in place.
Just a test to see the power behind the program. 👍🏻

Was laying around with the Eilish song,, but for some reason, the Fizzy Beats tracks (at the bottom of the track list) whilst having MIDI information in the tracks, strangely enough, for me, are silent. Even though I SHOULD have downloaded everything that the song requires,
Just an oddity!
One other point... the Utility CPU meter is only polling at preset intervals (you can choose down to once per second) whereas, I think(?) the CPU meter in Logic is polling more frequently, so you see a faster reaction to CPU core usage.
That’s good to know about the CPU meter.. maybe I’ll keep the ram usage up on activity monitor and Performance meter up on Logic. 👍🏻
The bouncing was the ‘real world’ process that we, mostly, can relate to in finalising the song. The earlier parameters to reduce the core loading spike maybe help a rush-job but the case of overly excessive tracks and plugs-ins is, as you rightly imply, in extremis.
Would you do a test with a high sample instrument load? Given the fact that their RAM is not upgradable, what worries me about these new M1 computers is not their processing capacity, which I think is far more than what I would ever need, but how good they are to work with a big number of sample instruments, like when working with large orchestral pieces and big libraries. Thanks.
The fact that SSD is on the same chip as your CPU and RAM will help massively there., as disk streaming and swapping is at least an order of magnitude faster than what you'd expect from NVM Express.

@@b_markovic not really a fast nvme pcie 4 SSD is not much slower sharing to memory on newer x86 if at all on this projects and GPU has its own dedicated memory, swapping is a little faster but can take a toll on SSD life and they are not replaceable so actual memory is always better and faster as is 2 seperate drive one for is and apps one for samples and projects since neither can read and write at the same time
You always want to run a higher buffer while playing back multiple tracks. During the recording of a track, you want it lower due to latency issues.

MIND BLOWN... I'm in a band called Los Syringas and were working on some recordings. In the studio I have to manually turn down my 2015 MacBook Pro fans cause they get so loud. I even put an ice freezer block underneath the mac to try to keep it cooler...I CAN NOT WAIT to get the M1 Max 14"!!!!!!!

Stopping and playing back remaps the load to the cores and that's why you were able to play it back on 2nd try. I've ordered the 16" M1 max 24c. These systems are impressive. Nice tests!

I have the same problem, only I have to leave the buffer at max 256 because I play live with the plug-ins.
10024 is totally laggy to play.
Good job. I like to save two cores for the OS and give everything else to Logic. Also, be careful to never wear headphones when you may experience a "System Overload" in Logic since this can result in a blast of audio at dangerous levels in some cases.
Ice9 plug-in on the main out protects against this.

It’s totally is sufficient! The price of hard drives is going down all the time.
Have a look at Crucial’s X8 SSD. I personally think it’s better than the Samsung T series.
So it’s a 10-core 14” MBP? What’s the rest of the specs for the machine? I’ve got a mid ‘18 MBP and thinking about upgrading.

I got the M1 Mac mini for my music production and I gotta say the cpu performance ands it’s price are reasonable. But the incompatibility with certain hardware and plugins just sucks!!
Third party plugins are always an uncertainty when a new MacOS or Chip is announced. It’s always the same story time and time again.

What macbook pro are you useing and how much Memory? I watched a 400 trace video and the peak was 33% cpu usage w'/ 2.1 mb ram in logic and 4.5 mb in protools.

can you also comment, how many tracks it handles when you set buffer as low as possible 64-128? that is crucial for recording latency. thanks
Have a look at the previous video and we were on 8x on the Billie Eilish track with was 344 tracks and 1,256 plugins at 128 buffer size.

Since I have the same Mac-configuration and a terrible Logic performance (clicks pops and CPU Spikes), I wanted to ask on which Logic and OS Version u are. For me Monterey + Logic Pro x 10.72 is horrible.

I’m on the same for both and only getting clicks if I start using a synth or plugin that is heavy whilst having a low sample rate.. i ust up the sample rate to around 256 or 512 and it’s totally fine. Do you have your cores as recommended?
The native logic plugins certainly weigh much less than for example kontakt and its libraries these renderings should be done with third-party Virtual Instruments AND third-party plugins such as Waves or Universal audio to name a few it is clear that in this way the machine would it have a greater load and therefore much fewer traces should we establish how many fewer? Although I agree with your 3rd party plug-ins being more intensive, UA plugs specifically are unloaded to their proprietary cores within the audio interface/satellite hardware, so UA may not yield wildly different results.

My M1 is running perfectly fine all of my production work, and I have a lot of MIDI info per track, and quite a lot of tracks as well. But if you do sound design, those numbers are, astonishingly, not unrealistic at all. I know... I know. And then we wonder why the dialogues are hard to hear... the most fellows have to deal with the director yet wanting a 100th instance of the sub-sub-sub-bass "bloop" sound that goes right over the most important line of the entire movie and.... sigh we miss it

Sir, i have a 16 inch M1 pro Macbook with 1 tb SSD, it is hanging and stuck in 50 tracks and says system overload? What is the problem?
It totally depends on what you are using. Make sure you have the right settings (unlike I did.. doh!) and if you are using something like a 3rd party synth as a plugin for example, it could take a lot more power.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK logic quits automatically, buffer size is disabled and plugins are also disabled, it's stucking and don't open quickly, it take lots of time, there is more issues?

Strong enough for 2k tracks ( even it seems unreal , i believe if you will not copy same delays & reverbs , but do all different , it will handle less ), Also , Its looks you was testing it while macbook pro is unplugged ( i noticed during battery is running out , there is downgrade in performance ) .
no downgrade in performance at all.. once it gets to 10% apparently it does drop.. but I havent reached it yet! haha
There is no point in raising the sample rate at the export stage. Better to use 48 or higher for all sessions and oversampling for any dynamic processing.
Why ?
I believe it’s because you can’t add the information. For instance, if you captured a 320p video, you can’t export it as a 4k video. Over sampling is the closest things to adding back information. I have been wrong many times before though mate so fact check me! Cheers 🍻

Video wise, I have been filming in 1080p and outputting it in 4K. Only recently (last 3months) I have been filming in 4K.

I watched another video where someone was getting 1fps in final cup pro working with 4k 120fps video with the M1 MAX. The problem that caused it was SCREEN RECORDING. As soon as they retried again without screen recording they got the full 4k 120fps at 120fps no problems no frame drops. I would try the test again without screen recording. Give us an update.

but screen recording is an essential part of the creative process for some. this kind of machine should be able to handle that
I use Ableton Live on my 2015 MacBook Pro but it just cant handle my sessions anymore... I'm thinking of getting a M1 MacBook Pro but I've heard Ableton still maxes out at less than 50 tracks... it's becoming an issue and I think i'm gonna have to teach myself Logic instead. Anyone else having this issue?

That’s fair. This was originally just a stress test and nothing more.
There’s no way (I think) that I would use so many tracks or plugins but I just wanted to see how far I could push it.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK I just tested the bench marks of the M1 Mac Mini 2020 (8 core, 4hf & 4 pf), it can withstand 79 instances of nexus with 320 3rd party plug-ins enabled with no problem. However, with just logic instruments (main stock & alchemy), it was able to do 211 tracks and 745 logic native plug-ins. The M1 Max & Pro far beat this, but they are all really good machines :). P.S no fan noise as well!

For other genres - Film and game developers use Logic Pro and score 100's of 'data points' which are effects and sounds for different things. It's not just for 'making' music, companies create worlds with sound.
Now for the normal musician and band, yeah its a huge amount that most of us (including me) ill never hit on a day-to-day but studios that need whole orchestral scores with designed sound effects need a lot of power and flexibility. The old demo on Logic Pro was Beck and his one track was 141 separate tracks/stacks.
G'day! I'd like to produce my music on Logic, I'll purchase a mac book pro to do so but I'm on a budget, would you recommend the entry level 14 inch Mac book pro? Or should I really break the bank and having it upgraded?
If it a just music production you could go for the normal M1 MacBook Pro and spec it up. The power and performance is really good.
If you have anything made by Apple, start with GarageBand which is free and has 30 tracks and Logic is the bigger version of that. Obviously Logic has lots more features but don’t knock GarageBand just cause it’s free. You might find that everything you need is in GarageBand. It depends on what you need and the kind of music you are doing.

Yeah i think the only issue might run into is the amount of ram (now called unified memory). So always get as much as you can cause that’s what the plugins will use. Great thing about Apple is their returns policy, even if you have used it. So try it out and if you need more power, there always the M1 Pro and M1 Max but it’s down to you. 👍🏻

I could. This was just a test to see what would happen without doing any of that. I would never use that many plugins and would utilise bus and mixdowns etc.

You shouldn’t have to do that
The one thing I would have done differently is to leave 1 processor for OS\file system management. It may well keep it from locking up.

Hey what are the specs for the MacBook you're testing? Honestly I can't decide between getting the 14" M1 or getting the M1 Mac mini. The mini doesn't have the max or pro chips, I wonder if its that big a difference. Im stuck between the two because I don't really need my computer to be portable.
The M1 Pro is so so powerful but I know there are so many people who are using the M1 Mac mini and are really happy with it!

Compatibility is still an issue for 3rd part plugins but it’s getting better all the time.

I have a 6 core i7, M1 mini, and a MacBook Pro M1 Pro (that's probably going back to BestBuy). I've never been able to overload the M1 mini. I even had a 32 patch setlist loaded up in Mainstage with the lowest possible latency settings and it was fast enough I could run vocals through a compressor and reverb with NO noticeable latency. On vocals that's amazing. I've never seen that before. I can't think of a single reason why a musician would need the M1Pro. Honestly even the i7 can handle anything I throw at it except for some 3d motion stuff for FCPX. If you don't need to be mobile the mini is a heck of a deal.

be careful with Protools cause currently only certain versions work. The HDX version doesn’t but normal (non hardware needed) Protools works.

I’m so confused and passed off that my brand new m1 pro MacBook Pro with 16gig memory crashes in even the smallest Logic Pro sessions. It beach balls before it even starts playback. I’m not using ANY of my plugins yet and the sessions are only about 6-12 tracks. If your tip doesn’t help I’ll be returning it and sticking with my 2015 mbp that works FLAWLESSLY. 🤞🏾
Oh weird. Mine certainly doesn’t do that. Have you done a backup transfer or a fresh install? I did fresh install.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK I used migration assistant to set up my new m1 mbp if that’s what you mean. I also updated Logic Pro to the latest version thinking that was the issue at first.
Maybe delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store - get a fresh copy.

I wouldn’t normally do this in a project.
I learned DAW using the IBM power PC architecture on an apple computer. As a consequence, I have a brutally restrictive amount of resources I'll give to recordings by habit. I'm not saying that's good, it isn't, but it does force you to question adding tracks and plugins, are they necessary? I do understand this is a performance test 🤣 Restriction is a great source of ideas.
I agree Doug. When I was in a 5 piece band in the late 90’s, we were blown away when we went into an early digital studio and had (count them) 16 digital tracks to play with.
Instantly we started thinking of ways we could use them. Obviously that was the wrong way to think about it. We ended up putting on dual solos, extra harmonies etc and by the end of it, we didn’t like it. It didn’t sound like “us” as a band.
The next generation of photographers, videographers, musicians who have access to this technology is amazing but might not feel that restriction as a valid source of ideas.
GarageBand on the iPhone and iPad has 30 tracks and it’s free and bundled in with your device! Crazy amazing times.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK cheers! Oh yes! I remember this one. Was it the s1000 that was contemporary I think to the s01? The revolution for me was *effectively* lossless sampling. Back when people said 'CD quality'. Oh yeah. Those bigger ones I craved dearly, but at the time I was doing live electronic stuff, mid 90s. Used to trigger it all with a Roland 626 which sounds perverse, but it's what I had. Because there wasn't enough to manage everything simultaneously, I forced my brother to play bass lines. Nowadays, that'd be very much a feature not a make-do. That's a great walk on btw, love it 👍😊
I’m still trying to figure out, as a composer, why the frig you’d need 400 + tracks for anything. You would always bounce down and sum tracks to help workflow. I wouldn’t want to be scrolling 3000 feet at a time to find why I need to fix!
You would exactly do that.. bounce or freeze tracks and use bus for effects

I’m seeing lots of producers and composers out there actively trying to use a silly amount of tracks, just to really make their projects look complicated and more interesting. When In fact it’s just a pile of effects, or stings or whatever. I don’t think I’ve ever went over 100 active tracks. I would always freeze or bounce down. Or create alternatives and what not. Less is more lol
There are so many people duplicating tracks to do multiple takes and just adding, adding, adding.
How many of them know professional production? Probably not many.
Now I’m not saying everyone does that but there are also other genres.
Game music, film, theatre, tv. Lots of different genres.
I just remembered watching a long video of Jacob Collier's where he goes through a 600+ track session for his song "All I Need". No doubt tons of redundancy, I almost wonder if he is afraid of deleting or merging tracks so he just continually adds more.
What model M1 are you working with?
M1 Pro, 10 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 16GB unified memory, 1TB Storage.
I transferred a Cubase project from i7-7880k windows pc to new M1 Max MacBook Pro and cpu usage is about 50% less, thru Rosetta. Natively would be even better.
Well Cubase 12 will be native so I’m definitely looking forward to that myself.
That’s good to know. Glad the 3rd party DAWs are getting on with it. It’s always the plugins that take the most time.. must be a nightmare for them.

So it’s an interesting conversation at the moment because it’s unified memory, which works differently to ram. And music production doesn’t need more GPU’s (which,with memory bandwidth) the M1 Max gives.
So running at 400mb/s on the max and 200mb/s on the pro (remember the normal M1 runs on 68mb/s which is faster than most, so you need more GPU’s.
I have 16gb of Unified Memory (ram) and it’s more than I need but apps will get bigger and bigger and I think 32gb is a great call.
Fan wise, the fan has only ever kicked in when I’ve exported / bounced something. So for recording, don’t worry about it.
Ironically the M1 Pro will give you more battery life than the M1 max as the max is more energy hungry.

It’s totally up to you and remember what kind of ram. Is it ram from 2021 with wider bandwidth than ram in my 2013 iMac. Ram has different speeds based on age and manufacturer.
Sigh.
It’s not simple, in fact for musicians it can be a total nightmare.
The same app on different machines will take up ram differently cause of how many Mbs it can handle and process.
My advice would be get the M1 Max as a test machine, throw everything on it and see how it feels. If you are totally happy then great, if you think it’s overkill then you can always return it to Apple and get the M1 Pro.
I got mine at the shop cause I didn’t have to get it custom built and it was there to buy on the day.
16gb is enough.
That’s what I am running with and I think it’s fine. It’s down to longevity I suppose and how hungry future 3rd party plugins will be.

The base m1 and now m2 will run Logic Pro.. it’s when you get into more tracks, more effects and more plugins when you need more power.
Your budget vs what you need. Load up your biggest project to date and see how much power it’s pulling.
You will find that the base m1 is 3 times faster than the 2020 intel model.
So the m1 pro is awesome for music production.

Welcome. Best advice is that apple stores and apple.com have a 2 week returns policy, even if the box is open (certainly in the uk anyways)
So get what you need, throw everything on it and test it.
If not to your liking, you can always swap it within that 14 day window. 👍🏼
Let's throw couple instances of EastWest Opus on there with a healthy dose of Omnisphere patches, and see how the little fella performs... That is more of a challenge to Apple, though; this video is all fun!

What instruments did u used?... Using sampled libraries doesnt affect CPU in term of charge but only RAM and on one is using 600 tracks in a project by the way , . u should use HEAVY cpu plugins such as Omnisphere , pigments, diva, massive x... wanna bet that if u use a mixture of those plugins u not gonna get more than 50 tracks before CPU overload?
I talk that on board but only just got the Mac so didn’t have time to transfer all my data over (in fact it’s still transferring to a new Backup drive atm!!)
But I appreciate what you are saying so I loaded up Pigments (as I don’t own Omnisphere) and did a quick test.

Logic seem to be very light on mac cpu
It is optimised for it as a native app but also the M1 Pro is just bonkers fast!!
Switch multi threading to playback tracks instead of playback and live tracks! You’ll get even more out of your computer. There’s no need for it unless you’re recording

You have that project saved... :) I'd "IMAGINE", that if you weren't screen recording it could make enough of a difference to pass first time. Also, the power profile that Apple has on the MBP for on-battery performance could also be enough to tip the scales. Gr8 follow up vid...!!

As you can see the last core is doing nothing. I bet if you create an empty track without any plugins and select it, you can get the load even more even. Logic reserves the last core for the selected record ready track. But of course it can be different with the 2 efficiency cores + screen recording. Try it out!

This is true.. until you start using multiple versions of a powerful synth.. but you can always freeze the track if it gets to much. 👍🏻

i’m a contradiction : a respected multi instrumentalist who has almost zero acumen towards the computer side of music production. i want to record keyboard in MIDI for hours at a time with no problems . my question is how to get the most stable DAW OS x combination? not the fastest or most tracks. the most reliable , hiccup free stable system. i have no experience with any daw so, you pick the daw and the mac and the right os x

Pick the DAW that’s right for you. You just have to try them. Most have trials, even Logic does.
There are free ones and paid ones. Depends what you need in a DAW.

Thats not just CPU Cycles, But also does a "Nom Nom" on RAM ..
Talk about "cheapening" what it is.... Not an Algorithmic Reverb, but a Convolution Reverbs..... (A somewhat comparison .... Algo = VI synth. / Convo = VI Orch Instrument)
Then again, I should go watch the orig video... But again, any project would only have a few...... and if not, as inserts, freeze the tracks.... so, theres that.
Conclusion = Apple OS, Apple Apps , Apple Silicon = Gets it done.

This was just a test, I would never normally do this with sessions, as you said, freeze tracks, use Bus system to put things in the same room or group of effects for a different resonance.
But yes. Apple silicon = amazing time to be into music creation. 👍🏼
Exporting in a higher sample rate will not do any good to your tracks, just adding some useless conversion you could avoid. So If you recorded in 48k you export in 48k, if you did 44 you export in 44 ;)

There are huge benefits when working with 96k projects, a lot of plugins (especially "analog modeled" ones) and soft synths sound way better (or just different, depending on how you look at it) because of oversampling, nyquist frequency and aliasing audible artefacts moved very far off.

Most of engineers work in 44k or 48k and it's more than enough, but it's up to everyone to do what sounds the best for them ;)

you still did it wrong. if you have a track on record enable, it keeps a core available for it, so it won't be used overall.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK it depends on the setting, this is to be able to use high buffer sizes and still be able to play in with the keyboard without delay on the armed track. i use a medium buffer size thats still fine to play with, because haveing the armed track on a lower latency changes timing of the track while prelistening.

That I didn’t configure the buffer size and maximise the chip usage and left it on recommended.. mainly cause I’m not used to it.
You're not listening to the track though things you're doing will increase latency and other issues. So just a track running to the end isn't a proof of anything.
Fair point but the track is being ram live with midi and plugins in real time. There are a lot of other things and ways to test but this is a follow up to the first video.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Actually, I think it IS proving something. The Audio system is still playing the data, surely, even if you have the volume turned down/no audio interface added. There might be a slight overhead du to the external audio being added in, but the meters are telling you that audio is being produce, whether you are listening or not. The stereo Output channel is registering an output so this should be valid.
