  • It's not often we get asked if we want to take a look at new Apple hardware, but with the new M1 silicon featuring the SoC (System on a Chip) and from what we’ve been hearing and what’s been claimed, we figured we would.
    We were sent the base model Mac Mini with the 8-core CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB hard drive. Also supplied were the wireless keyboard, mouse and track pad.

    I've been able to run an Ableton 11 session (Live 11 isn't M1 native yet), with 153 tracks of Spitfire's BBC:SO, and 4 tracks of Pianoteq (48k, 512) and play / record without any hitches. Consumes about 9 GB of memory, but everything works. Also tested SampleTank 4, all AIR synth plugins and some Waves stuff (C6, WNS etc). All works flawlessly. MIDI over IP, Ableton sync and all the other fringe stuff also working great. My big session doesn't even get the fan spinning (my 2018 MacBook Pro would melt with this session open) - and I still get more than 8 hours of battery life (30% minimum constant CPU usage, full brightness etc). It's honestly fucking unbelievable.

      There's a reason they introduced it on the laptops first, they're going to need to improve the speed and add more RAM for the higher end models. Doing 32-GB on a SOC (system on a chip) is a lot more tricky. The yield goes down the more RAM you put on a SOC.

    • @Miuweli
      @Miuweli 3 роки тому +1

      @@6581punk Intel's problem is thermal limits resulting mostly from their inability to perfect sub 14nm die fabrication. Also Apple has been unable to design platform that supports thermal dissipation on level required by Intel processors they chose to use. Change from x86 to ARM seems to be the future based on M1:s performance, at least on mobile platforms and low thermal limit applications that is. Intel indeed is now starting to lag behind in every major arena: mobile, workstations and servers, though Xeon's are still competitive, but not dominant as it used to be. I'm hoping for market where ARM-implementations compete against traditional x86, while RISC-V challenges both with pricing and open source community. Microsoft has already done some of the legwork needed to make large scale transition from x86 to ARM possible, but Apple still has some problems to sort out.

    The Neural engine works the same as on iPad if you get an overload Logic will automatically render a track to audio in the background if the neural engine can not repeat the sequence properly. So if you hit a brick wall stop and wait for a minute with zero play or messing with Logic then play again. In the core midi API it’s called invisible rendering. Similar to the way video editors do background rendering.

It's an issue many MacMinis (if not all) seem to have. Hope Apple can fix tis, since fast external SSDs are super important ...once Kontakt will be running on M1, hehe. ...can't wait to see Live11 in native M1 mode.

    Very interesting review, and useful commentary on RAM and storage options (especially given your disclaimer that you weren't attempting a general computing review).
    I strongly agree that careful selection of external storage is a viable and much more economical option than buying large SSD Apple models. For those fortunate enough that money is no object, paying for a big factory SSD is fine, but for the rest of us, smart use of, say, 256GB of internal storage with cheaper external drives can be managed such that the practical performance difference won't be material (just involves developing good working practices that always put the right files in the right place at the right times).
    I think you are also right to flag the potential limitations of the base 8GB memory model. For many people 8GB will be adequate, but the shared use of RAM for video and OS/program use means you could hit the buffers sooner than you expect if you want to do any semi-serious video work (for which the M1 is ideally suited). Most of the Apple models that are designed with video processing in mind have 4GB of dedicated video memory separate from system memory. If you use your new Mac Mini is such a way that you need similar amounts of working space for video, that only leaves you with 4GB for everything else on the base 8GB model. Choosing the 16GB RAM upgrade in that context represents a tripling, rather than a doubling of available memory (i.e. 12GB, rather than 4GB, of application memory). That might be something to think about, especially given the longevity of Apple machines (i.e. if you're smart in selecting the model, there is no reason why you shouldn't still be using it five years from now).
    As with SSD's, Apple RAM is expensive, but unlike SSD's there is no practical workaround for expansion. Unless you are pretty confident you are never going to need more than 8GB, I'd advise people to grin and bear the £200 premium for 16GB because of the safety margin it will give you. One consolation is there is a good private market in used Apple machines, so if you look after yours you'll get a reasonable proportion of what you paid for it back when you sell it to upgrade to something else. i.e. You can expect to get at least some of that £200 back.

    Two things.
    One, if you run Logic in Rosetta instead of natively, you can get better performance and compatibility with third party plugins. In the "get info" section, I think you can click the open in Rosetta check box and then it'll one in Rosetta and that should solvate issues with a lot of third party plugins.
    Two, Memory. It seems like a lot of people here are making the mistake of relating the memory in these computers with more traditional models. Other computers need a lot of ram due to how everything was laid out separately on the motherboard. It was very inefficient. With the system on a chip, everything is in one place so things get moved around much faster. iPad and iPhones don't have a great deal of memory, but because they are so well optimized with the OS and the SOC (System on a Chip), they run rings around every other smart phone and tablet with lots more memory. The M1(SOC) in combination with the OS is much better at RAM management due to a completely different architecture and we'll just have to forget the old ways of thinking about computers because with these new Macs, the old ways don't apply anymore.

    Great review. You missed one point. You can run on M1 also AUv3 plugins from iOS. There are currently not many available (Virsyn AddStation additive Synth...). So you can open them in Logic Pro X as an AUv3 plugin which is a big thing in my opinion. Korg Gadget etc not being available on Apple Silicon is because the app developers have opted out of allowing their iOS apps to run under macOS. For Cubasis this makes sense as it may cannibalise Cubase sales (which is available for Big Sur, perhaps you meant it's not yet available as a native M1 app), but the reasons for Korg excluding it, only they will know the answer to that, seems odd imo.

      There is no native binary for Diva. The U-he guys say it is on the way. They are having to do some optimisations for their compiler apparently: www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=548945&sid=c28a65b1041b66a7b590bd83f253638a&start=90
      At the moment the only way to run Diva is to emulate it on the M1 (and I use the term emulate here in a general sense; only to mean translate X86 to Risc on the fly). Diva in this testing is the Intel version. You will always exhibit a performance penalty trying to emulate non-native code but nonetheless I think what Apple have done even in this area is pretty impressive.

    • @Screaming-Trees
      @Screaming-Trees 3 роки тому +1

      ...and yes once Diva is ported to run on Risc (ARM) it will perform a lot better. Single core performance on the M1 is out of this world. Apple really have something special on their hands here. And all of this at around 20watts system power.

    • @watercolourmark

      I was thinking the same. Speccing a PC build currently with a fairly high budget and this seems like a steal. But by the end of watching this I was thinking it is a non-starter. Lost me on no upgrading and £600 extra for 2TB!! That is a cheeky combo. So I would be talking £1700 for 16GB/2TB, I don't have Logic, so another £200 and I am talking £1900. I could get a Ryzen 3950x 16 core, 64GB, 4TB with RTX graphics (for bit of video/3D/gaming) for same money.
      And I think the trick for any PC budget build today is those Ryzen AM4 socket. Just invest in a quality X570 motherboard, £150-200. That means you can throw in a £50 Ryzen CPU, add 16GB (so you an upgrade in blocks of 16GB to 32GB, then 64GB. 1TB SSD, with option to add more over time. So you could spend £600-700 for a 8 core, 16GB, 1TB setup then when you have a extra £100 upgrade memory or harddrive, and when you have another £600 in the future throw in a 16 core CPU, with no money wasted - other than £50 CPU which you can put towards a second budget build. So today £600 gets you a basic M1 type of spec, but over 12 months you'd spend less than a top spec M1 spec for something that cleans the floor with it. With the added bonus of being able to upgrade further and being able to run your software on it today.
      I can understand why those not into computer hardware and a bit of graft would go for a M1, but they won't be doing themselves any favours, in terms of the future and fair deal. £600 for 2TB!!! For those that don't know a quality 2TB m.2 costs £300, with the same 3.4GB/s speeds. £400 would get you 5GB/s speeds. Cheeky pricing.

So it is more good if you turn ALL in a no native mode ( included logic ) , so the mac run better on a "" translate mode "" for all ... and in a few months when all will be ready to be M1 native , the at this time return at logic native ( because plugins will be native too)... same language !
