M1 Mac + UAD... IT WORKS?!?

- UPDATE: Couple folks have asked about other UAD gear. I've now hooked up my regular studio chain which is two 8p's and one quad core Satellite. After updating firmware on devices, they were all recognized on the M1 MBP. I did a very simple test with a channel of Neve 1073 Unison and LA-2A on each of the 8p's, a Capitol Chambers on the Console Aux 1 and a couple channel UAD plugs in Logic (to hit each of the units' DSP). All worked as expected. I still recommend not doing this until UA gives their blessing. But it is a good sign that that may be well on the way. Cheers!
I'm not recommending you do this. UAD doesn't yet support the M1 Macs as of this posting...But it's working for me. And that's good news for the future of M1 support!

You are the man. Thank you! I bought an M1 Mini not realizing the compatibility problem, and reinstalling with my Twin connected and powered on did the trick. (This was after going into the crazy security startup mode and enabling kernels management.) I was pulling my hair out thinking I'd have to return this cpu. Thanks man!

That 414 sounds amazing. Pleased to meet ya! I'm Glenn. I'm a retired recording engineer. Most voice tracks on UA-cam annoy me, but yours is great! I use a UAD2 Solo in a Thunderbolt 2 chassis. I'm thinking M1 has enough firepower increase that I can add it to my rig without much trauma 😁 Great video!

Yes indeed. It's very curious that I didn't have to do this on the MBP...I definitely should have. But yesterday, I set up a new M1 Mini and I did have to change to Reduced Security and allow "any known developer" or whatever it is. And that came with it's own troubles on this machine - basically the Startup Options menu was super wonky - not recognizing my user at all. Eventually (and since it was a new machine) I chose "Erase Mac," reinstalled Big Sur, went through setup and after all that, Startup Otions were all working and UAD install went as expected. Hope they "qualify" M1s soon...like before the M1x is released lol
I’m sending my m1 mini back. A bunch of my plugins won’t work and crash Ableton and Maschine while loading up. Not to mention that I couldn’t get my Apollo twin to even get detected. Sucks because that little machine has a lot of power. I’ll wait for whenever it stabilizes. Good video, thanks.

I know thunderbolt 4 is backwards compatible but on the site it says to use only a thunderbolt 3 and I'm wondering does it really matter? Cuz my MacBook pro 2022 how's the thunderbolt 4?

Nice discovering your channel here. What's the difference port wise between this MBP and Mini M1? Can the UAD connect to a hub or directly to the M1 machine? I'm waiting for a hopeful M1X release and then decide between the Mini or Docked MBP for studio use. Any advise welcomed.
Although the Mini offers more physical ports, the number of TB/USB4 controllers internally is the same (2), so the theoretical throughput is the same. The "big" difference with the current crop of M1s (and likely this will change with M1x) is that the notebooks will only natively support a single external monitor. The Mini will natively support two. But in practice, this is easily overcome by using DisplayLink adapters/hubs/docks. I'm using an OWC 1 to 3 TB3 hub and a DisplayLink hub on my M1 MBP when I'm in studio and have two 2k monitors and one 1080p (plus the built in). I understand the desire for more built in ports, but for me personally, I'm very rarely connecting that much when I'm mobile. And when I'm in studio, it's easy peasy to have tons of peripherals connected.
Which Apollo unit are you using? I'm wanting to get a 16GB M1 MacMini to run with my Apollo x6, UAD-2 Satellite and UAD Luna ... but all of the reports plus UAD's claims that the M1 won't work with UAD software is making me delay the Mac hardware upgrade.

This explains why UAD released a subscription for their plugins now. They seem as if they’re gonna be slow to add legitimate support to all their currently established interfaces as well as developing a natively compatible M1 version.

Your MacBook has a Thunderbolt 2 port. If you have an older Apollo with TB2, you’ll just need a cable. If your Apollo has a Thunderbolt 3 (looks like USB-C), you’ll need a TB2 to TB3 adapter. I use the Apple adapters and they’re about $50 USD.
Hey Bro, thanks for this video, have you tried any other UAD devices? I’m about to upgrade and trying to find out if my apollo quad FW (with the TB3 card installed) will work on the M1?
I don’t have any FW Apollos to test unfortunately. It “seems” from the statements on UA’s site like the FW Apollos with the TBolt Option Card are just as compatible (meaning not officially supported currently but known to work) as the TB native units, but again, I can’t say for certain. It’s a tough call - u can still get some $ for the FW units. Plenty of folks still using the old cheese-graters who can only use FW. I think Apple has a decent return policy…cpl wks or something. Imo, worth checking it out. And if u do, let us know!

Can the twin runs on a 2012 mac mini?
Have a question, please. Do you run OS Bis Sur or Catalina on the M1. Asked cause of the wallpaper.
Big Sur as that's the only OS the M1 will run. Apple included several Catalina desktop background photos.

Yeppers, TB1/2 to TB3/4. And my 8p’s and Satellite are all working as well with the M1. Can’t imagine it’ll be too long before the M1s are qualified by UA

@@juleschab7030 I've only used the Apple adapter. With everything connected and powered up, check System Report > Thunderbolt/USB4. If it shows up there, it's likely just a question of Startup Security settings.
How did you get Console sto run under Rosetta 2? Also what connections are you using (thunderbolt or FireWire)
I didn’t do anything specific aside from installing it. Anything not M1 native will run under Rosetta 2. You can open Activity Monitor to find out whether an app is running natively or as “Intel”. It’s a column under the CPU tab.

Yep, you just need a TB3 to TB2 adapter. I use them everyday on M1 Macs.

Sorry for the delayed response! On this particular MBP, for whatever reason, I did not. On two M1 Minis, I did. I believe this is now the official workaround (if it can be called that) on the UA site.
@@MusicNerdStuff Cheers! Yeah, I went ahead and followed that guide and the UA Arrow has been working great with the M1 Air. Powerful mobile setup. Handles mixing surprisingly well. Plugin compatibility/stability can be pretty hit or miss so far still, but it is a great setup. Cheers for the response!
mine works too the question is it running native or rosetta ?also you have disable the permissions by holding down the power button while booting and then turning off the high level permission then reboot and go into privacy and security and allow the ua software
Console and Control Panel are running under Rosetta 2. But the CPU hit doesn’t seem out of the ordinary.

Maaaan...that’s the question isn’t it? All I can offer is my own experience. Which is that I’m highly impressed by this MBP. I wasn’t sure that 16GB would put me where I would want to be for audio and video work but so far it’s been a non-issue. At the price point I really think it’s an incredible machine. And now with OWC’s TB hub and docks and things like dual 4k DisplayLink hubs, connectivity isn’t an issue for the vast majority of users. That said, since I’ve got the latest Intel Mini with 64GB ram and an eGPU, I’m gonna wait a bit to replace my studio Mac. I think there’s a good chance that we’ll see the next M1 (or M1x or whatever) Macs in March. But if you need something now I can’t imagine any Mac fan being disappointed by these new machines. Just make sure you know if the third party stuff you use is supported yet.
I have 16" Macbook Pro with M1 Pro chip and I just ordered the Twin X Duo before knowing there were these supposed issues. I know this video is from a year ago. Do you know if it works properly now?

If you have a TB2 connector on your Apollo, you'll need a TB2 to TB3 adapter. I use one Apple sells...sometimes they're finicky about third party adapters, so I stick with theirs.

UA now has instructions on the site regarding installation. I cannot get rosetta 2 to open with the console and panel, there is no option when opening "get info". Also it still says I have drivers installed incorrectly after the second time installing it.

The only thing I did differently on the second install was to have my Twin connected and powered up. It did make me update firmware fwiw.

This is a Thunderbolt Twin. USB twins are Windows only as far as I know.

For me, it went as described in the video. Installing more than once possibly did the trick, installing with devices connected and powered on possibly did the trick, or maybe it has been the exact models I own.

which audio interfaces are compatible with the apple m1 chip?
Nothing
Anything Class Compliant USB will be recognized and pass audio. If the interface has its own software, however, that may not run natively. For me personally, all my UA interfaces (TB Twin, TB 8p and TB Satellite) are working. I have a Focusrite Scarlett that works perfectly as well. Even my Helix shows up as an interface as it should.

UA says FW connected devices are not compatible with 9.13.1 under Big Sur (even with adapter) so you may be out of luck. Let me know if you find otherwise.

I have an apollo twin x. I was using the console it worked Great but when I attempted to load a UAD Plug in (Real Verb) through a Logic channel strip it crashes. "An audio unit plug in reported a problem which might cause system to become unstable. Pls restart logic." Now I can't even open Logic w/o getting this message. I tried un-installing Apollo but problem keeps happening.
So now Apple are only making Mac's with the M1 is Universal Audio dead as far as using apple goes?

Working today in Logic and Pro Tools with 8p and a bunch of UA plugins and it’s all working great. Logic native and PT under Rosetta.
I keep buying new laptops to work with my twin and I keep wasting my money
