  • Korean food is one of those cuisines that warms your soul. Korean food is full of flavors and textures and all sorts of delicious dishes that make you feel at home. We jokingly say that all Korean food is comfort food because it all tastes as if it was made with love in a home kitchen cooke by mothers and grandmothers. The vegetables and noodles and rices and all the other ingredients that make Korean food so delicious fill you and warm you and make you feel at home. We visited Gwangjang Market twice while in Seoul and each time we discovered more new Korean foods and vendors, each more delicious than the last! This is our video we filmed in one evening on a food tour with with new friends and the most amazing Korean local who showed us to some of her favorite Korean food vendors inside Gwangjang Market.

    1. Any Korean food have named Bibim, (such as bibim bap, Raw meat bibim bap, bibim noodle, etc) it means you need to mix it.
    2. Most of Korean Boonsik(kind of snack), such as tteokbokki, is not treated as proper meal but it can be meal when you're hungry or no time to have proper meal.
    3. Banchan(side dishes) is not only the appetizer but mostly combine with main dishes for your prefer taste.
    4. When you're facing unfamiliar Korean dishes and you don;t know how to eat, just ask employee or owner of restaurant. They will love you.
I hope this information could help you little to understand more about Korean food. Have a good time! :)

As a Korean, raw beef is still unthinkable for me. With that much $, I rather order cooked beef, yummy. There is not a set of rule how to eat. I eat Bibimbob without mixing it or not adding red sauce in it. I prefer to eat as fresh variety of vegitables in one bowl. Yea the street foods are so much fun to try. They can fill you, but going to a restraurant setting may give a different embient.

Sometimes Korean food demands patience from you. It may not taste very good at first. You can say, "Oh my, this is boring." Korean food doesn't contain butter or milk, which is usually used in the West, so it's hard to get the first impression of savory and sweet. However, the more you increase the number of times, the more you find yourself addicted to Korean food.

You guys ordered yukhoe bibimbap, which as it sounds is mixed rice that includes the raw beef. That's why Chris has a bowl of rice in front of him, so you throw in the rice and mix it up with the red sauce.
If you order it ala carte, the seasoned meat comes on a plate with sliced Korean pear, sesame oil and a raw egg yolk on top. You would mix everything together and eat it. It tastes a lot different from the bibimbap because it doesn't have the veggies to mask the taste. But I get that a lot of foreigners could get a bit turned off by the raw beef, but also because of the raw egg, which Westerners have been conditioned to avoid.

    • @posterizedz
      @posterizedz Рік тому +4

I might add, the “ala carte” version was most likely what others were recommending you to try. Flavor profile is very different from the bibimbab version you just had, which btw wasn’t prepared properly either.
Think the ala carte version as a sweeter Korean version of a western beef tartare.

    1. put rice into the bowl.
    2. mix it up with chopstick or spoon.
    3. enjoy it with spoon.

When you guys eat raw beef bibimbap, you have to add rice in the bowl with red pepper sauce and mix with other ingredients. It would taste great in stead of just eating each ingredient without mixing. Bibim means mixing and Bap means boiled rice, thus mixing bap with other ingredients. Next time you folks have a chance for bibimbab, hope you enjoy it in right way. Good luck in your trip.

@@chrisandsara it actually reminds me of my first trip to US in Dec 1995. I had a biz meeting with executives of Bell Atlantic in DC. After meeting we went to a steakhouse. I had no idea of steak thus I ordered exactly the same as one of them did, which was 25 oz rare. Totally embarrassed to see my dish.. too big and almost raw beef.. had to eat all, feeling like I was a lion or tiger. Getting used to foreign culture would broaden our understandings of diversities of the world, decreasing cultural clashes.

I guess being a Texan gives me the excuse to forgo the raw beef dish cuz I’ve avoided it the entire time I’ve been living here. You guys have some brave palates cuz I avoided the raw wriggling octopus as well. Those things are major choke hazards so I’m surprised your guide introduced it to your group. I mainly stick with safe food - the ones that are guaranteed to be delicious and enjoyable. Stick to grilled, marinated, or cooked beef. No one else does meat better than Korea. My favorite is pricey but worth it - galbi jim is basically “elevated” pot roast but even more tender and savory. Galbi-tang is also good but can’t guarantee how soft the beef will be cuz more expensive restaurants tend to get it right than the cheaper ones. The one way to eat beef without it going wrong is just grilled beef called galbi. You can cook it the way you want so it’s pretty easy to enjoy. Marinated galbi is even better, but it can be a tad sweeter than usual grilled beef. I’m telling you - stick with the cooked meat dishes and you can’t go wrong. ^^ kinda missed seeing Kramer so hope he pops up on the next one^^

A lot of Koreans would eat a small plate like you did, with the fish cake broth (or not, personal preference), as a quick snack. Or eaten as a meal, like lunch along with gimbop (don't have to, but a popular combo).

    1. veggie tempura and fried dumpling goes well with tteokbokk. closest food you can compare to tteokbokki would be hotdog/nacho/pizza(?). it can be a snack/meal/streetfood
    2. yukhoe - i don't know why it's spelled that way but correct way to say it would be "yook-hae". you are supposed to be put rice into the bowl, put some gochujang(red squeeze bottle), and sometimes sesame oil, mix well and then eat. also.. it's not something you eat on normal basis nor liked by everyone.

Tteokbokki is definitely a Korean snack and a Comfort Food. It goes well with Mandu(dumplings), fish cake stew, and any type of fried food, such as tempura, French fries, sweet potato fries, fried seaweed rolls, etc, so it is even more delicious when eaten together. However, if you really like tteokbokki, you can eat it as a meal instead. Many enthusiasts enjoy eating gimbap and tteokbokki together as a meal. Technically, tteokbokki would usually be categorized as BoonSik. The term BoonSik isn't exactly refering to which part of the meal but rather 1960s Korean government's policy to promote flour based food to solve rice shortage Korea was going through then. Kind of like Irish and potato. But the term BoonSik now days is used almost like "snack." In between meal. Usually just cheap street snack for school kids or could be a meal for college kids on budget. But it could also be a main dish for lunch or dinner depending on how you prepare it. But generally, if it was in a full meal, it would be one of the banchan (side dish).
There are varieties of tteokbokki. Historical traditional tteokbokki, goong joong(royal court) tteokbokki, had no spicy as it was before peppers were discovered in American continent and brought into Korea. But now days, tteokbokkis are almost always spicy and the spicy level can be just "fun" sweet spicy to going to emergency room level. There are many restaurants that market themselves as serving spiciest tteokbokki. Better to avoid those if you are not used to torturing your internals. I actually had a Japanese friend who was hospitalized after trying the extra spicy version.
