    Converting a Ford Generator to Alternator
    Episode 497
    We convert our tired old generator to an alternator in our 1964 Falcon. We show exactly how to wire the alternator into the existing car using a new harness we make from one of our existing wire bundles. We also show existing parts from National Parts Depot that you can use to make your own harness to convert from a Ford generator to an alternator. This is not a one wire alternator conversion because some folks do not wan to use a one wire alternator.

    When I built my 64 Ranchero I used a Painless harness with a Ford alternator. Just not enough power so I switched to a 100 amp one wire alternator. Wasn’t happy with voltage at idle. After starting the engine I had to rev the engine to over 1500 rpm to get the alternator to start charging. After reving the voltage was just ok. So 8 years ago I replaced the alternator to a 3 wire internally regulated 110 amp GM style alternator. I now have plenty on voltage at every rpm. So if you don’t care about factory correct the GM style is the way to go, plus they are available with even higher output than the one I’m using.

      That the way I’m leaning on my 64 comet build. I’ll be filming for that kick off this weekend I hope.

    Okay, there has got to be a reason you chose an external regulator. As Rickie would say, OK Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do!

    Have used a 30 amp Generator to power Halogens and Pertronix Ignitor 1 for 20 years now, so it's news to me that it won't work but I'll be sure to keep an eye on it now ;) Generators work but if you want A/C it's not gonna be enough.

    Using a torch to shrink the butt connectors is the only way I do it at the house. I use a heat gun at work or a bic lighter if it’s only 1 or 2. Probably going to do a swap on the Comet. But I’m looking at maybe a GM one wire.

    Best thing you can do with a generator. Toss it. Installed the 3g alternator on my 63 Falcon, not sure if you can run a v-belt with it. I’m using a serpentine setup.

  • @Jon-Bar
    @Jon-Bar 3 роки тому +1

    Surprising that you used an externally regulated setup. The 1G alternator is a little bit smaller, but if you can fit it a 3g internally regulated would seem easier with a lot more power output. Other options would be a 1-wire but there are some downsides. Also , if you have an ammeter you might need to pull that circuit out.

      I want to eliminate wires to have a cleaner look and not use the existing regulator. What's the easiest way to do that? And do I need special brackets to hold the alternator?

    • @oakhurstaxe6392
      @oakhurstaxe6392 3 роки тому +1

      My 64 1/2 Mustang had a generator. I thought they used them that year until they ran out and later ones from that year used alternators. So it was somewhere around 65-66 (probably depends on which model Ford as to what year they swapped them). My understanding is all 65+ Mustangs had alternators.
