Outside of people that subscribe to his channel, I haven't seen any support for him being Kiryu. Darryl came back with the redemption of a lifetime in 7; it makes zero sense why he was cut loose.
There were plenty of not white actors they could have chosen. I mean for fuck's sake they got George Takei for 7's dub there's no way they couldn't have pulled another old deep voiced asian dude.

Youngyea is far too young to be voicing an old kiryu to be honest
his voice is too nerdy and high pitched to be kiryu at any age.
He did great as Father Pucci though in Jojo. If only he sounded more like that.

As a kiryu enjoyer myself I prefer Darryl for 2 reasons he voice fits an older kiryu more and he was in the original Yakuza 1 game and you can tell as a voice actor he's gotten better. Nothing against YongYea but his voice doesn't fit all too much

Personally I can't play any game that have Kiryu in it in english. I am too attached to Kuroda. But I agree, if I had to choose anyone, it would be Darryl.
Judgment is perfectly fine in english though, and you guessed it, it's because it does not have Kiryu ;)

@@Agentshadling I always play Yakuza/Judgment in japanese, but from what I heard of Judgments dub its quite good for the most part. It's good they have dub for people who want it. It does not take away anything from us who play in japanese just because they added english dub.

I was actually upset when I heard Darryl wasn't reprising his role. I played the original PS2 Yakuza when it came out, so I have a soft spot for his voice. Listening to his performance again as an adult made me appreciate him a lot more. He sounds like someone who's been through a lot. There's a weight to his voice. YongYea sounds like he's putting in a lot of effort and that he's trying really hard, but he ends up sounding so hollow and light.
Like his voice was actually not bad as kiryu, it's just the voice direction in 1's dub was trash. When they actually gave the dude decent voice direction he really killed it as a man who could body your team without breaking a sweat.
Like its not the worst voicing per se but just bad for someone like old Kiryu who's just not fit to sound that young

It sounds like YongYea is too focused on getting that deep manly Kiryu voice that he's forgetting to get into his character which makes his voice sound hollow with no emotion. And i also think he letting the community perception of what Kiryu should sound like get the better of him. He should Ironically take inspiration from Chris Pratt and his Mario voice, despite everyone trashing his Mario voice, he made Mario his character and shrugged off all the backlash, which he surprisingly did decent in the mario movie

Darryl sounds so much more natural, he actually sounds like an adult guy whos bee through it, Yong on the other hand sounds like he's mildly putting on the generic "I'm so badass" voice.

Dunno about Ada Wong, but YongDong being miscast reminds me of Splinter Cell Blacklist, where they replaced Ironside with some younger man (except he didn't go on a blocking spree, IIRC).
Ada's RE4 VA performed so horribly. Shown further in the Separate Ways DLC. Wish the RE2 remake VA reprised her role

Yeah, Darryl did really good. I think the only Yakuza games that had an English Dub, was the original Yakuza 1 on PS2 and Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon. The English dub for Yakuza: Like A Dragon was actually extremely good and well done too. But I think Darryl was the english va for Kiryuu on the original Yakuza 1 on PS2 and Yakuza: Like A Dragon. Many people were hoping he reprised this role in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth though.

They're only connected because they share a stone age ancestor, but japanese people also share a stone age ancestor with pre-mongolian siberians, who come from the eastern hunter-gatherers which is also where europeans come from. So japanese people technically share an ancestor with white people through the stone age.
Thats why the Ainu look so different from other asians. (or looked, now they're pretty mixed)

Yongyea dub sounds like genuine shit
YongYea's voice here reminded me more of Kiefer Sutherland's Venom Snake from MGS5 than it does Kiryu. Not a fan of the new Kiryu english voice, but if I did end up playing this game, it'd probably be in Japanese anyways since it feels more natural

The way the voices shift the moment the progress bar hits the middle of Kiryu is EPIC. No other comparison video is necessary.
The difference is in the "you wanna die, step up". Darryl sounds like he aint joking around, while Yongyea screams like an insecure kid trying to seem intimidating.

The problem isn't that Yongyea sounds 'young'. It's that he sounds like Yongyea. He's basically using his normal voice. That's the voice we associate with a soy loving, raid shadow legends shilling internet personality/news aggregator. Not with Kiryu.

Yongyea was the goofiest choice from the get go, anyone who expected better was bamboozling themselves
Darryl Kurylo, like obviously he's still no match for Kuroda's iconic voice, but he sounds like he's actually old.
Yong sounds like he's trying to do a Wesker voice but it's that new RE Remakes kind of deal where they tone down the camp and make him more serious and gritty.
I can get why a lot of people are pissed now. Not to mention the new voice actor blocking anyone for giving him criticism to improve.

@@juice2307 Jotaro and Kiryu are anything but similar in personality, appearance doesn't matter much, they have a slightly similar stoicness, that's about it.
It's not his age. Yong Yea has always had this awkward way of pronouncing his words in English. I don't know if it's his native tongue, but it certainly isn't spoken like it is. Diction, elocution, articulation. There is something in his pronunciation of sounds and words that's just...off. Then you have his actual performance. His pauses, tone, and delivery are also strange. I'm sure he can improve with time. Hopefully his colleagues are honest and kind enough to help him out, and hopefully he's humble enough to take on their advice. None of us really has an objective view of our own abilities or projection. It sucks that he's finding this out in a very public, sometimes mean fashion.
He'd make a good voice for an entirely different character but it's not fitting at all for an older Kiryu.
Imo neither of these voices really fit kiryu, but the first one is clearly a better VA. The first one hes talking too low, its clear thats too low for him, the second one hes talking even lower for his range, you can hear his voice fry out, why even try.
I can hear a Kiryu from Yakuza 0 talking, but not Kiryu at his 50s.
But I would've played in Japanese regardless, since some jokes loose context in English dub like the "CAN YOU TAKE ME TO THE STATION" scene

Honestly if i heard these voices without the pictures i would still say that sounds like yong with him not even trying to sound like kiryu none of what he displayed there showed that he tried to change his voice to match the character in anyway
Damn i enjoyed playing Y7 in English but damn if i have to listen to Yong Yea for too long i might be forced to switch it. I already olayed the demo and i found a hidden comedy gem in the love letter substory. Its a huge reason to play it in english to catch small things like that. Plus, looking forward to Robbie Daymond back as Zhao.

wtf was sega thinking when they hired yongyea lmao at first i was happy for him because i thought he had hidden talent for voice acting if sega hired him but apparently sega hired him to make Kiryu a meme
I might be repeating what some other people have commented, but even though Yongyea doesn't seem to be that terrible at voicing Kiryu, in a alternate timeline where the first Yakuza dub was actually good, each game got English voice actors and the series wasn't dead in the water basically until 0 came around, Yongyea sounds like he would've faired better voicing a young Kiryu, like 0-2. Kiryus in his mid 50s in Gaiden and 8 so Darryl is by default the way better fit because he actually sounds that old so its more realistic. Yet again in his video Yong did say that with how legendary of a character Kiryu is, giving anything less than his best would be an insult to him as a character and the entire series in general. Plus we still got a couple months until Gaiden is out and little over half a year until 8 is released, so maybe between now and than hopefully he'll find a way to improve
the first yakuza dub is good. memes aside if sega hadnt marketed it as GTA in Japan they probably wouldnt have been as ambitious with the casting. ultimately would have been better long haul tho

Not a fair comparison to me. The audio quality is too noticeable between the two and makes it hard to get a feel on Yong's voice while Darryl Kurylo's voice doesn't work either.

The real problem for me isn't who we got or Darryl being replaced, it's just that it felt kinda inconvenient how we got him back for 7 and he got swapped right when we were about to be prepared to hear him again.
I love YongYea’s work personally and I think he'll do a great job. His voice doesn't match Kiryu's age, but he's got the right spirit.

Here's my problem i got into Yakuza with 0 picked up the old ps2 ones to how the franchise progressed and as bad as the dub is Darryl nailed Kiryu. They bring him back in 7 i pick the jap dub because i'm used to it and it fits better. Plus the english dub was fine and not so bad its good. Sucks that a bad youtuber who makes lazy vids got the gig he is terrible as Kiryu.

My guess is that Darryl probably couldn't do a singing voice for the karaoke minigame either due to budget reasons or just limitations on his voice.

Darryl has the perfect voice for Kazuma. It fits the character perfectly. Yong is far too young to voice Kazuma who’s in his mid 50s and is suffering from cancer.

I'm going to be in the minority and say that this ONE READ Yongyea did was actually okay. But it doesn't hold a candle to Darryl Kurylo. Not even close.
Also Yongyea's line reads in the actual game weren't even close to as "good" as what he did here. He definitely phoned it in, which is a shame because he could have done a passable job (not good. Passible). But what we got was as far from passible as you can imagine.
