After hearing the recent clips of Yong Yea's Kiryu voice, this video makes me sad. I was really hoping Darryl would come back, what made his portrayal great is that he didnt try to imitate Kuroda, he put his own spin on the character and made it his own.

Agreed 100%, just as I was getting excited at the prospect of Darryl getting the second chance he deserved he gets replaced. I'll be honest, I am really not feeling Yong Yea's voice. Really doesn't sound right to me

Thank you for the vid, this is proof that the original VAs suffered from terrible voice direction. I read at times the VAs didn't have a visual of what they were reading for. Unlike recently where they are shown what's happening in game as they act along. I honetly didn't mind the PS2 dub when it came out, lotsa games dubbed poorly back then.
Y7/Like A Dragon gave Daryl overdue justice. He did exponentially better. He may not be the best English VA for Kiryu (almost impossible to find Kuroda's counterpart), but Daryl is way better than the cuurent English VA.
I miss Darryl as Kiryu his voice fit perfectly for Kiryu! 😢
As much as I forward to Yong Yea voicing Kiryu, a part of me is gonna miss Darryl voicing Kiryu even if he voiced Kiryu in 2 games.

@@JaneDoe-my8xqProbably because they didn't want a white guy voicing a Japanese character and Yong is Asian. Dunno if he isn't still the wrong ethnicity though.
It's dumb and superficial, just like when they replaced Ada's perfectly fine voice actress in RE4make just because she wasn't Asian.

This makes me so sad. Such a great video and a great tribute to a truly talented voice actor. This man is so precious, I really hope we eventually find out why they didn’t call him back, but I knew that once Scott Strichart left RGG the quality of dubs and maybe even localisations would go down. I dearly hope there is a way to independently hire Kurylo for a scene or two, especially to allow him to demonstrate how things could have been. That final goodbye was not only a goodbye to Kasuga but also to us. If only we knew back then… 😢
Daigo and Sawashiro also has a new English VA. Daigo is now played by Tim Friedlander and Sawashiro is now played by Ian Anthony Dale.
Toshihiro nagoshi too, he is the one that I think was open to the idea of having the dub voiced by kaiji tang and bringing darryl back.
Now seeing the direction of the localization team and RGG just makes it sadder with infinite wealth. I just hope SEGA will grow a backbone and bring darryl back to redub the whole thing which is impossible but still.
Ngl but I really wish Yakuza 2 had an English dub, I feel like they should have given Darryl and the other VAs a chance for improvement.

YongYea sounds like RE4R & RE5R's Wesker instead of Kiryu. A part of me I would prefer Darryl Kurylo's voice more when I started to play the series 16 / 17 years ago on the PS2, both the JP & NA Versions of the game. I heard that people out there don't like UA-cam Content Creators voicing our OG characters due to fearing massive backlash, controversy and met with harsh constructive criticism, harassment in this case similar to Lily Gao who voices Ada Wong in the RE4R, instead they should be hiring professional voice actors which is more suitable for the roles.

Depends on how much footage of Darryl’s Kiryu voice exists and wether it’s dynamic enough to be used for every single line in a huge JRPG
Takaya Kuroda AI would also work for creating a new English Kiryu. It’s been done for some songs and the like already.
The big problem is that it's not only YongYea's voice that's awful, it's his acting and inflections. I watched a scene from IW with Kuroda's voice AI'd over Yea's and while the voice itself was better, it was still Yea's shitty acting and it just sounded out of character.
Who is playing Yakuza in English?
Probably people who started with 7 which is questionable, but it is a long series so whatever I guess. Luckily the new dubs are really good compared to other games (except Kiryu, they dropped the BALL with that one, I'm mad) and the RGG localization team usually does a great job with both subs and dubs, even making separate subtitle tracks for each voice language setting.
