I understand how people might get antsy when you're not seeing much in your pan only a few meters away from where you were getting good gold, but it's valuable to show people how big the difference between being in the "right" spot and being not quite in the "right" spot can be. Plus, it never hurts to explore. That's how you find the "right" spots! Cheers!

I live down here in the mountains in Western North Carolina. Hurricane Helene destroyed our entire region. All the creeks and rivers look like rotorooters bored them out and made most of the rivers and creeks make completely new paths. I’ve wondered if after events like this, does the massive amounts of water expose more gold to find? I’ve been thinking about trying my luck here and trying to do a little panning.

Here’s a crazy story I’d like to share about my time searching for gold: It was 2003. Early summer. I took off walking from my car to go to lake louise near Dubois Wyoming. It’s a n easy 4 mile hike over various types of terrain. Some slippery glacier scraped rocky areas, fallen trees and steep uphill slopes occasionally making the hike more difficult but nothing too serious. I left the parking area at about midnight and began walking along the main trail towards the lake using the stars as light and directional guide. Some parts of the trail were deeply forested and were dark and scary to walk through. About half way to my destination I turned left onto a trail I’d never taken before just for the heck of it. I got about 3 miles up that trail and found another trail forking off to my right and decided to take it. I like getting lost and finding my way back so this is why I kept taking different trails. Anyway, I was walking through some pretty dense woods when up ahead I saw a face peeking out from behind a tree with a hand on the trunk. The face was pale in the darkness with large black eyes. It’s hand the same pale whitish color as its face. I ran up to the tree and meant to surprise the thing and hopefully grab it but when I got there it was gone. Two more times I saw it peek from behind a tree as I walked along and each time I ran up to grab it it was gone. I figured I was just getting tired and needed a rest and that I just imagined seeing it. A couple miles later I emerged into a huge clearing with no trees around except those I just stepped out of. The moon wasn’t out so the open meadow appeared vast and completely black. It was like having claustrophobia all of a sudden with no trees to reference for distance. It started getting cold as the light breeze was more prominent in the open opposed to being in the trees which block the wind. I stopped after walking a few minutes and put my jacket on and sat down to rest for a minute. As I sat there smoking a cigarette I saw a bright light just past the brim of my cap above me. It was moving in a zig zag pattern but not uniform. Just zigzagging around but going in the same direction as it wiggled through the sky. It was enough to keep my attention for sure. I quickly fished my flashlight out of my pocket and blinked the light at the object a few times and watched it disappear behind the mountain behind me. I thought to myself “wow that was cool.” Then the light came back. It was directly overhead and it was flitting around like crazy. It attached itself to two other stars that had been there all nite and formed a triangle. That triangle of lights began spinning around super fast and started growing larger and larger until the space between the lights began to cover up the other stars. That’s when I realized it was descending towards me quickly. It was one of those black triangle craft that people talk about. I got up to run back towards the trees but suddenly I was surrounded by tall dark ugly beings with long necks and thick legs. I had my nite eyes so I could just see their outlines and a little of their facial features. In the star light I’d guess their color to be reddish brown but I could be mistaken. I knew I couldn’t escape so I sat down and let them have me. That’s when I passed out. When I woke up I could hear angels singing and as the fog cleared I realized it was the sound of a brook close by me. I slowly got up and it felt like I’d been drugged. Finally I could stand and I saw such a beautiful landscape it just blew me away. I was in a huge meadow of flowers of every color with the snow covered mountains in the background and a big waterfall cascading down from the glacier on top of a very tall cliff face. I was compelled to climb up the cliff face even though my backpack was nowhere to be found. After about an hour of climbing I reached the top of the cliff and saw multiple caves leading back into the glacier. I went into one cave and saw the walls were translucent blue and the sound of the water was deafening. It sounded like boulders were crashing down from the falls onto the rocks below but it was just so much water that it was explosively loud. I finally climbed down and followed the trail back towards the trees and eventually found my backpack in the trail where I stopped the nite before. I didn’t even remember the creatures until I found my backpack. I know what had happened but there wasn’t anyone else around so nobody would ever believe me when I told them about it. It took me half the day to finally walk back to lake louise and when I got there I started panning for gold along the beach on the side of the lake that had no trail. It was such an arduous process to navigate the boulders and fallen trees on that side of the lake that it took me until dark to finally reach the inlet. Just before I got there though I panned about a handful of black sand from the water level that I dug up from the beach. As I tapped out the last of the black sand I saw a thick band of bright yellow appear in the corner of my pan. With just a handful of black sand I got almost an ounce of gold dust. I looked upwards at the cliffs in the mountainside above and behind me and noticed a faint trail leading up to several small digs in the cliffs. At the inlet was a square configuration of felled trees with a fire pit inside of the square. It looked like a fortification. It dawned on me that some time ago, maybe in the late 1800,s a group of men made camp here and mined gold out of those cliffs and they cleaned their findings on that beach. What I’d found was their tailings. 24 carat gold dust in mass quantities that they left behind. It was starting to get dark and a light snow began falling from the wind blown glacier up above so I pulled out my pup tent and started to cook a fish I’d caught at the inlet. I set up my tent inside the square tree fort and laid down to sleep in my pup tent. At some time in the nite an incredibly strong vice locked around my ankle and pulled me out of my tent. A large black hairy mass dragged me for a few feet and then it straddled my body and walked in all fours over me towards my tent. It was the biggest grizzly bear I’ve ever seen. Massive. It started tearing into my backpack and I took off running towards a big pine tree and climbed up it as far as I could. The big bear didn’t find anything to eat and took off after a few minutes and disappeared into the nite. I climbed back down and gathered up my stuff and swam across the lake and ran down the trail back towards the campground 4 miles down the trail. I’d always wanted to go back and use a metal detector in those cliffs and in the cracks in the rocks up on top and pan that entire beach but I couldn’t get anyone to go with me even after I offered to split the gold with them. So I never went back. I smelted the gold into an ingot and pawned it for $300. Nowadays it would be worth a lot more. I’ll never forget that nite I saw those things though. In those mountains I’ve seen human skeletons up in trees with feathers and old saddle blankets and an old powder horn with the initials jb on it which I gave to a museum. They said it may have belonged to Jim Bridger but there was no proof other than the initials. Well, that’s the end of the story. I hope you enjoyed reading it. Lates.

Hi Dan, exciting finding gold isn't it. Not trying to "tell you what to do" but....... I would add another classifier to your pan, I use a 10mm and then a 2mm. You can quickly view the plus 10mm fraction then jig the plus 2mm. It gets really exciting when you flip the screen and get a proper nugget sitting proud on the reject pile. The remaining -2mm is far easier and quicker to pan with less risk of losses.

I like your videos, the way you educate and put things in laymens terms. Places you go to i have seen similar areas where i live. I live in Vermont where i live there is a map of the area online and it shows where gold has been found. 👍 When the hurricane ripped through Vermont some years back. It opened up new streams and people have been finding gold. Watching your videos gives ne insight on what to look for.
    Thank you.

A tough day at the office today eh Dan, panning the outside curve just doesn't pay the bills. But a good hands on lesson of what not to do anyway.

To the people crying about "ohhh you lost a huge nugget at whatever time"...
Those people clearly don't understand or have experience with the density "weight", of gold 🤦‍♂️

Well, I am SURE you have considered this, but... Do you have a pair of trout fishing waders? There are waterproof pairs that come up all the way to your armpits, and you could maybe have waded that river and stayed dry. I don't know how deep it was, but it looked like there were enough rocks in narrow places to cross it with good waders. I've crossed similar rivers fishing for trout in W.V. in the U.S. - I know, I know, you don't always have the right equipment with you at all times. But keeping a pair of high waders in your truck might be a good idea.
