  • It's much easier to repair a car's air conditioning (a/c) than most people think. I step you though how to re-gas / recharge the system in only 3 steps.

    You forgot to purge line before pulling the trigger. I would connect gas first, pull trigger and depress valve in blue plastic fitting. Then connect blue plastic fitting to engines low pressure port (high pressure port won't accept the blue plastic fitting so you can't stuff up) this purging way clears the rubber line of air so you don't introduce moisture to the system. Air is bad. Refrigerant good. But good video and thank you very much for posting.
    Ps. UA-cam replacing car ac filter also 😀

    The trick to keeping your air con in top shape is to keep using it, since it is the freon and oil in the system which keeps all of the seals lubricated. Your fridge never needs a recharge because it is running 24/7. I run my A/C even with the top down. I just point it to my feet and have cool feet.

      This will increase the fuel consumption, and therefore environmental impacts of driving, significantly. Why not just run the aircon regularly instead? Normal use in hot weather and briefly using it 1-2 times a week in colder weather will keep things lubed up. Use all modes, e.g. recirculating and non recirculating.

      The majority of refrigerant leaks on cars are corroded or damaged condensers. Don’t drive your fridge to work and it’ll last years 👍🏼

    Great video and very helpful. Halfords have either re-jigged their range or hiked their prices quite considerably since this vid was made. The cylinder of refrigerant is now £60 and the valve with pressure gauge is £79.99. Makes it a significant investment when my local garage does a regas for £60 inc VAT.

      I see the pressure gauge advertised at £26 currently.

    Excellent video. I am trying this today, as my 2.7 986 aircon has never worked since I bought it in April. Keep up the good work, will post results.

      +Road and Race Arrgh! Followed the guide to the letter..... But the ingoing gas was accompanied by the sound of it hissing out elsewhere.... So the troubles begin. Hopefully the leak can be traced.... Looks like I'll be taking the top down more often.....

      That's bad to hear. I've not tried myself but apparently you can buy a dye that you connect and when it leaks out you can see where the leak is. Might help?

      Either that or just use dishsoap water on all the parts and see where bubbles form. Should be pretty easy to find the culprit. Whether it's easily user serviceable is a different question.

    Actually the 981 manual does not say where to top up, or what the refrigerant is they used. I suspect they already switched to R1234YF with the new model?!

    Wish I had watched your video before being ripped off by my local garage. £120 is a bit much for a ten minute job and about 50 quids worth of gas.

    I topped up my refrigerant about two weeks ago, it worked great for about a week but now it no longer blows cold. I checked the pressure and it was fine. Any advice for a fellow 986 owner?

    • @RoadandRacetv
      @RoadandRacetv  8 років тому +1

      Hi Dominic. That's an unusual one! Not had that happen to me but if it's keeping pressure then I assume there's a problem with the compressor?

    • @HORUS9
      @HORUS9 8 років тому

      could be the compressor, guess ill have to take a look at that sometime. thanks for the reply!

      Doing a bit of research it could be a very small leak that wouldn't be detected with a pressure test. Condensers can commonly develop holes. Try a dye test to try to find the leak?

      Hi Dominic, did you have any luck fixing your air con? I replaced my air condenser (leak visible on the front of it with one side of it stained) and then re-gassed the system using this video from road and race. This worked for a week or so. The air con now doesn’t remain cool, a loud hissing is now coming from the passengers dash, however when I put the gas bottle to the aircon valve it reads it’s still within the green section... help!??

  • @jamie123b
    @jamie123b 3 роки тому +1

    What if it’s already in the green but blows warm air?

  • @hardworker8030

    How do you know how far in to the green you've got to go.

    • @RoadandRacetv
      @RoadandRacetv  7 років тому +1

      +Hard Worker Anywhere in the green should be fine. You'll probably find it won't go any higher anyway.

    You need to purge the air out of fill gas pipe from gas bottle first.

  • @creamgg7338
    @creamgg7338 4 роки тому +1

    If your air con has no pressure you should do a pressure test with oxygen free nitrogen, then when the system is tested you should vac the system dry with a vacuum pump , then add the gas. If the system has air in it then it will not work properly. Hope this helps.

    well if u do this, you can kiss good bye to whole system :) He just pumps moist air, which is trapped in the rubber hose and that will damage the pump and erode pipes. Never do cheap solutions on your car!
