Everybody seems to parrot the old "syn line just falls to the ground when it breaks" bologna. Obviously you've never actually seen one break. I have. Had mine break last month. It whipped 20' of line into the tree I was winching to. It hit hard enough to take bark off the trunk! Yes, cable would've hit harder, but don't be fooled, that rope would've left a nice welt.
In places like Australia very soft dirt and mud here in Arizona all hard rock and gravel. Steel can sit for years in the sun and it will work the same. What I don't like about steel is if you get some small wires brake offs cut the crap out of your hands trying to pull it out.
I've had a Warn 12k winch for over 20 years. After 15 years of hard pulls for the sake of safety I replaced the cable due to 1 frayed strand right on the drum. I cut the cable short of the damaged strand. Used cable clamps to put a hook on both ends. Now I have 120' of extra cable. 20 years old still working strong. Every synthetic rope I've seen used on friends rigs have failed. My steel line always worked and got me unstuck. Wash the winch line 😂😂😂 I laugh!
Lots of falsities here. Rope stretches and stores as much energy as cable and will certainly whip backward just like cable. It’s no more safer for anyone around if it snaps. Also you can always cut off broken or damaged cable and reattach it to the hook if you carry the stuff to do that. It doesn’t need meticulous care. Just keep it clean so sand and grit doesn’t wear at it internally.

Wire winch rope can be joined in the field if it snaps. You unwind half the strands and form a loop with the other strands and wind the strands into the matching grooves on each side of the cable. Do the same with the other side after passing both sides through the loop you first made, tape off the tailing strands and you should be right, better than trying to tie a knot in cable but that maybe an option as a last resort. One huge downside with synthetic rope is it is not abrasion resistant & won't survive being pulled over sharp rocks & it's bulky and you cannot get anywhere near as much on the drum as opposed the wire cable, I'll take wire cable on my WARN winches every time.
UPHMW fiber doesn't exist. What you're wishing to say is UHMW-PE fiber. I know all those letters get confusing for someone that's not "into" plastics. Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene is what the acronym stands for. If you've ever worked with it in solid form, it's extremely tenacious stuff. I believe only Kevlar is stronger, but it doesn't have the yield (stretch) of the UHMW. Didn't know there was a cable alternative, thank so much for your video...
I think synthetic has been way over-hyped. Yes, it's lighter and more pleasant to work with, but I think those are the only clear benefits. It may be stronger under LABORATORY conditions, but in off road use it sure seems to be more prone to failure than steel. Videos of winch lines failing are ten (maybe twenty) to one synthetic, so it's a good thing it stores less energy. I suspect the average user is much more likely to experience a failure with synthetic than steel which sort of negates its "safety" attributes (a flying winch line isn't the only potential hazard if the line snaps in use). Everything about off roading is bad for it: UV, mud/dirt/dust/sand, sharp edges, rock abrasion, heat, and cold (it'll turn into a useless block of ice on the drum). It's high maintenance and damn expensive, particularly if you have to replace it every few years. Neither will tolerate straight abuse, but I think steel is more reliable in the real world, and certainly more tolerant of doing actual work with your winch beyond recreational four wheeling.
Being that it's a lot lighter, wouldn't the weight for weight comparison of 15x stronger mean a small amount of wire cable be as strong as a large stack of synthetic rope to equal the weight/strength of the wire cable? That's like saying my 100 pounds of feathers is just as heavy as your 100 pounds of iron weights. Well sure they are both 100 pounds, but it would take a massive amount of feathers to equal the weight vs a smaller amount of iron.
Bulldust. 2 U-clamps can join a broken cable together. Carry those with you always, about $6. Winding the cable back on the drum might be ok, but you might have to remove the U-clamps depending on how you do it. As for the weight (mass), who frickin' cares? You are winching. The absence of stretch in synthetic seems not right to me and might be a worry too, as a bit of stretch is definitely good. I think a salesman isn't the person to trust on these things. I'd like to see some experienced people tell us. And as for washing the synthetic, umm, what! Give it a cuddle and bed it down for the night too? And say nigh-night cable, see you tomorrow!!
I never thought about weight different between wire and synthetic rope that makes it a no brainer plus the wire gets internal breaks over time and those lose wires can hurt you.
I call bull! "with wire rope if it breaks you have to wait for someone..." HA, I have nothing but cork cored wire rope on my tow truck. I can easily do a 5 minute repair and get back to business with it. Dont gotta wait on no body.

Well if I'm the guy pulling the cable I would really appreciate the lighter dynema.... And yes it is safer.... But if course you are right in working situations..... In recreational 4x4 I prefer short cable to the winch and lots of dynema to reach out if needed.... Of course you watch this video and most of them don't know how to drive up Hill lol.... Tires spinning wildly lack of control That Hill shouldn't need a winch at all except for safety...... It's something how few people find their way into clubs and never learn how to get traction and keep it
Because it costs more so they make more money and it has to be replaced quite often. I am still using my 40 + yr old cable on my Ramsey 8000 lb winch and it has never broke. And it is not true that rope is 1.5 times stronger then cable..the Cable is stronger then the rope especially when the rope gets dirt and water in it.

I had a RAMSEY 8000Lb winch solenoid malfunction & freeze on when winching on the free cable and it popped the hook and cable swage right off the end of the cable without really slowing down when it tried to pull the hook through the fairlead rollers, powerful.
40 kilos for steel cable? That is 90 lbs. I believe the shipping weight for my winch and cable was 80 lbs. This is for a 9000 lbs winch with 100 feet of cable. Where did you come up with these numbers?

My atv broke down not too long ago and someone pulled me from my winch and as soon as the first pull went down it's snapped lol I was so sad because it was just the weight of me and my atv, it wasn't even stuck in the mudd. Anyways, metal rusts and I feel like a synthetic rope would be nice.
Because it's tensile strength is higher. And maybe because steel wire is cheaper, or it might be because they know that people will buy a rope eventually, and get a bit more money out of you.

It shows people driving and winching simultaneously when using the magical synthetic rope which is "1.5 x times stronger then steel" BUT the bloke never seems to notice it. No matter what type of rope your winch is fitted with, when you are winching and driving and the truck kicks back from no tension back to full tension, the tension on the winch and/or rope can be up to 5 times more then the safe working load. STOP talking safety before you know all the facts, this video is a good example of marketing without knowledge. Would you trust this guy?
I really wish people would learn about elastic forces and tension on materials. I've seen synthetic rope snap back with considerable force. And even in a few of the clips they have in the video, you can see synthetic ropes snapping back with considerable force.
After having to WINCH my front suspension back together on a trail repair i will only use steel. Track bar bracket sheared off my frame so use chain and my winch cable in an X pattern on my front suspension to drive out. Only had half steering in each direction but enough to get out. A synthetic would have sliced and rubbed through with as may sharp edges it was rubbing against on my bumper, axle and frame

Synthetic ropes do break and they do recoil. You are WRONG. They can still hurt and kill people if they break! They might be safer if they do break, but are more likely of breaking.
Ease of mounting, most Australian bullbars come with tabs welded on for such a purpose. Pity it's against Australian vehicle design rules that don't allow protrusions from on top of the bullbar that could be a pedestrian hazard or obstruct the drivers view and render the vehicle unroadworthy & defectable.

I've seen it in use and I wouldn't own it. I run only WARN winches with wire cable on all my 4X4's & Polaris RZR SxS and Honda ATV and Factor55 recovery gear so upfront establishment cost is the least concerning issue for me when it comes to quality self recovery gear that I can trust. The only place for Dyneema is on my fishing reels.

They aren’t as good as far as durability !The type I run I have made several pulls on my 3500 and 4500 winch...pulled everything from my 1800 lb sxs tofull size trucks with it out of deep mud and at several distances inclines declines you name it! No issues whatsoever and my 4500 winch had over 100 pulls on it and the guy I sold it to over a year says it’s still working perfect! The rope I used and still use is called spidersilk made with Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide (kevlar)! 1/4” diameter high tensile with 8,000 breaking strength, high abrasion resistant, fire resistant , cut resistant! And is guaranteed for 3 yrs! Dyneema and others like it aren’t as good as what’s out there now! Like you said it’s good fishing line!
...and you don't get steel spurs in your hands from synthetic. But I'll stick to steel. Get it strong enough and keep the kinks out and it lasts forever...even dirty and in the sun.

Never run or slide your hand along a steel winch cable, wear riggers gloves, like it says in the instruction booklet, problem solved.

My brother used synthetic on his atv winch. Spent a few hours at -20 trying to get that frozen blob of ice to unspool. I'll use the wire.
Wash in cold on Normal wash normal spin with like colors. Tumble dry low. Do not bleach or iron. Remove hooks before washing...

Synthetic is non scracht resistant.When its scratch under load on a tree,wood or the ground it wear out fast.

I think synthetic rope is great, but the cable lasts longer and is cheaper to replace.
Broke my synthetic line 2 times.... moving to steel cable again never had a break

It's taking a while to catch on and the cost is higher.

Just a comment: Dyneema rope should withstand UV very well, this is not however the case with Kevlar ropes. Those should be protected well for UV.

After having to WINCH my front suspension back together on a trail repair i will only use steel. Track bar bracket sheared off my frame so use chain and my winch cable in an X pattern on my front suspension to drive out. Only had half steering in each direction but enough to get out. A synthetic would have sliced and rubbed through with as may sharp edges it was rubbing against on my bumper, axle and frame

Might want to warn the cargo ship companies that have long been equipping their ships with synthetic lines. shows how much a dummy someone like you are assuming it loses strength when wet which is not true, I rather be able to retrieve my synthetic line than loose a steel line when it SINKS which thus cost money to replace, synthetic is superior despite price and minor pitfalls.

synthetic winch cable sucks it cost 5x what steel cable costs and despite the weight carrying over steel it does not resist getting ripped up on sharp rocks like steel ...lol...build a better rig and you don't need to pull cable enough to care about the Cable weight like you do winching every 100ft .
Synthetic ropes do break and they do recoil. You are WRONG. They can still hurt and kill people if they break! They might be safer if they do break, but are more likely of breaking.

Ease of mounting, most Australian bullbars come with tabs welded on for such a purpose. Pity it's against Australian vehicle design rules that don't allow protrusions from on top of the bullbar that could be a pedestrian hazard or obstruct the drivers view and render the vehicle unroadworthy & defectable.

I've seen it in use and I wouldn't own it. I run only WARN winches with wire cable on all my 4X4's & Polaris RZR SxS and Honda ATV and Factor55 recovery gear so upfront establishment cost is the least concerning issue for me when it comes to quality self recovery gear that I can trust. The only place for Dyneema is on my fishing reels.
Dusty Farmer ha ha! I strongly disagree! Not sure what synthetic ropes you’ve seen or used? I use the newest material not like 12strand dyneema or others like it. They aren’t as good as far as durability !The type I run I have made several pulls on my 3500 and 4500 winch...pulled everything from my 1800 lb sxs tofull size trucks with it out of deep mud and at several distances inclines declines you name it! No issues whatsoever and my 4500 winch had over 100 pulls on it and the guy I sold it to over a year says it’s still working perfect! The rope I used and still use is called spidersilk made with Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide (kevlar)! 1/4” diameter high tensile with 8,000 breaking strength, high abrasion resistant, fire resistant , cut resistant! And is guaranteed for 3 yrs! Dyneema and others like it aren’t as good as what’s out there now! Like you said it’s good fishing line!

Ok video but a wire rope when broken can be repaired with NO tools other than your hands and some black tape. it's called a molly hogan. if you break a syn line and don't know how to splice and tie knots instead you lose about 65% percent of capacity. other thing about your video why so much wheelspin and over driving your line?

In reality I prefer dynema because I don't need a winch just a couple poles and make a Spanish windlass or Chinese windlass..... It's lighter to carry and move around and it's more satisfying to accomplish a pull using elbow grease
